A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Marek, age 92 of Ogdensburg, will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday (May 3, 2017) at St. Mary’s Cathedral with Rev. Joseph Morgan officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held also on Wednesday from 12:00pm until the time of the Mass at the church. Mrs. Marek passed away on April 27, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Home surrounded by her loving family.

Surviving is her husband Frederick Marek of Ogdensburg; son Michael Marek & his wife Donna of Ogdensburg; a sister Patricia Brady of Ogdensburg; two brothers John Bergeron of Huber Heights, OH and Thomas Bergeron of High Ridge, MO; seven grandchildren Peter Marek & his wife Kristen of Littleton, MA, Paul Marek of Auburn, Anne Colangelo of Liverpool, Joseph Marek & his wife Amanda of Natural Bridge, Loreen (Rumble) Cope, Ken Rumble & Randy Rumble all of Missouri; along with 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews & cousins.

A son Stephen Marek; a daughter Constance Delano; two sisters Barbara Decarr & Ruth Langley and two brothers Francis & Joseph Bergeron predeceased her.

“Betty” was born on May 29, 1924 in Ogdensburg NY, a daughter of the late Henry & Elizabeth (Gillespie) Bergeron. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and later married Frederick Marek on October 16, 1943 at St. Mary’s Cathedral with Rev. Gordon Coseo officiating.

After high school, “Betty” became employed as an operator with the NY Telephone Company where she worked for ten years. In 1951 she left her employment to raise her family. “Betty” was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral, The Blue Army and the Altar & Rosary Society. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, traveling and spending time with her family.

EVANS MILLS- Louise G. Davis, 92, of NYS Rt. 37, died Friday morning, April 28, 2017 at the home of her son, Wayne C. Davis whild under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Born on May 28, 1924 in Watertown, NY, she was a daughter of George D. and Lily Bell Gary Docteur and graduated from Watertown High School in 1943.

Her first marriage was to Gilbert Blanchard who was killed in an automobile accident January 7, 1951. On October 10, 1953 Louise married Harlond F. Davis at the Stone Street Presbyterian Church, Watertown, NY. Mr. Davis died August 20, 2005.

Louise worked at the A&P Store in Watertown, NY from 1943-1946, then she worked at Crown Zellerbach, Carthage, NY for 17 years.

Currently, she is a member of the St. Andrew’s Shared Ministries, Evans Mills, NY, charter and life member of the Evans Mills Volunteer Ambulance and former member of the Pamelia Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary, Jefferson County Firemen’s Auxiliary and the New York State Firemen’s Auxiliary.

Louise and her husband Harlond, enjoyed riding their 4 wheel ATV’s and snowmobiles at their camp on Tug Hill. After his death, her favorite past-time was watching her great-grandchildren play sports and family gatherings.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Ann Blanchard, Watertown, NY; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Mary Davis, Evans Mills, NY; three grandchildren, Sherry Sloan and her husband, Slade of Morrisville, NC, Jennifer Davis Hunt and her husband, Wesley of Watertown, NY and Stephen J. Davis and his wife, Yvonne of Evans Mills, NY; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice Wheeler, Watertown, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents, her husbands, two brothers, Clarence Docteur, killed at the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and George Docteur, two sisters, Lily Bell Foster and Elizabeth Woodruff all passed before her.

Funeral Services will be 2 pm Friday, May 5, 2017 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY with Rev. Anne Wichelns and Rev. Sarah Lee, officiating. Burial will be at Brookside Cemetery, Watertown, NY, next to her husband, Harlond.

A calling hour will be from 1-2 pm prior to the service.

Port Leyden: Graveside Services for Don Robinson with full military honors with Charles J Love Post American Legion, Harland J Hennessey Post VFW and Tun Tavern Marine Corp League and Deacon James Chaufty, officiatin will be May 6 at 12 Noon in Calvary Cemetery Port Leyden.

A luncheon will be held immediately following the sevice at the Port Leyden Fire Hall and food may be dropped off after 9:00 AM.

Funeral services for Rita F. Crawford, age 90 of Ogdensburg and formerly of Union Street in Heuvelton, will be held at 2:00pm on Monday (May 1, 2017) at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home with Lieutenants Shaun & Stacy McNeil of the Salvation Army officiating. Entombment will follow at Foxwood Memorial Park.

Calling hours will be held also on Monday from 12:00noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Crawford passed away on Friday April 28, 2017 at the Riverledge Healthcare Facility with her family by her side.

Surviving are her children David Yost and Lorraine Yost both of Ogdensburg; grandchildren Lisa & Kenny Chase of Ogdensburg, Stephen Bogart of Watertown, Jamie, Angie & Chad Yost of Rochester; great-grandchildren Kaitlin, Erica, Trista & Graci Chase and Sydney & William Bogart.

She was predeceased by her husband Lyle in 1999; a brother Gerald Barnes in 1976 and a sister Roberta Barnes in 2013.

Rita was born on November 28, 1926 in Syracuse NY, a daughter of the late Carroll & Goldie (Brown) Barnes. She attended Ogdensburg Schools, and later married Lyle F. Crawford on July 14, 1973 at the Heuvelton Presbyterian Church.

Rita worked as a nurse’s aide at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital for a period before becoming a switch board operator until 1984 when she retired. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars and enjoyed camping, watching TV, collecting bells and ceramic mice, being on the river, cookouts, gardening, her pet dogs and she enjoyed her children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren.

Leon F. Podvin, 74, of 17120 County Rt. 53, Dexter, passed April 28, 2017 at his home where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

The funeral service with military honors will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Born on November 7, 1942 in Watertown, son of Gerald and Bernadette (Bourdon) Podvin, he attended General Brown High School.

Following school he entered the US Navy in 1961 and was honorably discharged in 1963. He married Donna L. Gray of Watertown on April 4, 1964, the marriage ended in divorce in 1993.

Mr. Podvin was a mechanic working at Sears, Goodyear and retired after sixteen years from Cheney Tires.

He married Devota Miles on May 11, 1995 and the couple resided in Dexter.

Mr. Podvin was an avid hunter, fisher, bowler; he coached little league baseball when his children were young, was the former president of the Watertown Little League Baseball Association and he enjoyed camping and spending time with his family.

Among his survivors are his wife Devota Miles-Podvin, Dexter; six daughters and a son in law, Wendy S. Podvin and her companion Jim Staub, Calcium, Laurie J. Podvin and Adam Brown, Watertown, Cathy A. Hollenbeck, Calcium, Jennifer L. Podvin, Watertown, Pamela L. Podvin, Watertown, Jessica E. and Lisandro Torres, Watertown; three sons and a daughter in law, Timothy A. and Brenda Podvin, Gary F. Podvin, Brian M. Podvin all of Watertown; two brothers and their wives, Richard and Linda Podvin, AZ, Jim and Yvonne Podvin, Sulphur Springs, NY; 25 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service for Janet Marie Change, 62, of Raymondville and formerly of Canton will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 10:00 am at the Morley Wesleyan Church, with Pastor Paul Dettmer, officiating. Janet died on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at the home of her daughter, Jessica Curran, while surrounded by family and under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.

Janet is survived by three sons, James (Jaime) Hughes of Pierrepont; Jonathan (Erin) Hughes of Hermon; Micah Change of Canton; by a daughter, Jessica (Rodney) Curran of Raymondville; by eight grandchildren, Kyle, Zoe, Kayl, Bruce, Joseph, Coral, Abigail and Wyatt. Janet is also survived by her mother, Joyce King of Lisbon and two sisters, Gayle (James) Flanagan and Melody (Joseph) Flanagan, all of Morley and by several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her father, Elon Jackson and by brothers, James Edward Jackson, Elon Martin Jackson and Edward Martin Jackson.

Janet was born October 9, 1953 in Gouverneur, the daughter of Elon Jackson and Joyce King. She graduated from Canton High School and holds a Bachelor’s of Literature. Janet served in the United States Navy. Following her service she worked in health care for a short time and then took on the tiring and often time’s thankless job of being a mother.

Janet would go out of her way to help anyone she could. She was a member of the Morley Wesleyan Church, she took part in several Relay for Life events, she was an “Events Coordinator” while living in the High-rise in Canton, she was a member of the Waddington American Legion, and she enjoyed crafts, crocheting, cooking, and quilting. Janet was the official greeter at church and she assisted with the Dairy Princess parades. Her main focus was being the best family member and friend she could be to everyone she knew.

Kathryn Lyndaker

LOWVILLE – Kathryn Bellinger Lyndaker, 87, of Brookside Circle, passed away Friday, April 28, 2017, with her family at her side, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.

Kathryn was born on April 4, 1930, in the town of Harrisburg, a daughter of the late Glenn J. and Pearle Bannon Bellinger. She attended country school and graduated from Lowville Free Academy in 1948. On October 21, 1950, she married Edward A. Lyndaker at her parent’s home with the Rev. Roger Williams of Lowville United Methodist Church, officiating. The couple was married 67 years.

Mrs. Lyndaker was employed by Clyde Graham of Graham’s Variety Store and later for his son Harold for many years. She was a member of the Lowville United Methodist Church for over 65 years, the Lowville Methodist Women, Treasurer of the Booster Club and Sunday School teacher and also various committees at church.

She was also a member of the Harrisburg Grange #551 for many years where she held several offices until they disbanded, also a member of Lewis Co. Pomona Grange. She belonged to the West Lowville Homemakers Club, was a 4-H leader and secretary of the Thursday Night bowling league.

She enjoyed her family and their Sunday dinners together, traveling, cooking and spending summers at their camp at Brantingham.

Surviving are her husband Edward, a son and his wife Bruce D. and Gloria of Lowville and a daughter Gail A. Klosner and her companion Steve Olmstead of Glenfield; two grandchildren Sarah and her husband Nolan Lowe and Matthew and wife Sarah Klosner and one step-granddaughter Jennifer Bidwell; four great grandchildren, Molly, Julia and Olivia Lowe and Daniel Jeffery Klosner and two step great-granddaughters, Dakota and Cheyenne Rogers; a brother and his wife Richard and Arletha Bellinger of Lowville; a niece and five nephew.

She was predeceased by son-in-law Daniel Klosner; two sisters and two brothers-in-law Dorothea and Harold Vary and Maxine and Byron Allen; a step granddaughter Terri Brockert and a nephew Maurice and wife Margaret Vary and a nephew Jerry Allen.

Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, May 2nd from 11:00a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Lowville United Methodist Church with funeral service at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. David B. Herrmann, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in the West Lowville Rural Cemetery.

Lois Marie Robbins Potter passed away peacefully April 23, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born January 9th, 1940 to Ralph and Irene Mae Dudley Robbins of Lacona. She graduated as valedictorian from Sandy Creek Central School, where she played clarinet in the school band. She was a girl scout, and graduated from Oswego State University with a degree in education.

In 1960 she married Richard Potter of Orwell, they had their first of six children, Brenda, in 1962.In 1963 they purchased the farm that they still own to this day.

Lois loved her family, the family farm, all of her animals and her church the Orwell United Methodist Church. She taught elementary school for 10 years. She loved her students and often brought them home and treated them as her own.

Her favorite holiday was Christmas she would make her famous fudge and pies for holiday and Sunday family dinners. She enjoyed Friday night pizza night which has been a family tradition for over 40 years.

Lois was a kind and loving person who welcomed anyone and everyone into her home. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body. Lois worked side by side with her husband, Richard, on the farm for many years and the two were rarely ever apart. They recently celebrated 57 years of a loving happy marriage.

She is survived by her husband Richard, her mother Irene Robbins of Lacona, her sister, Judy (Larry) Stucky of Lacona, her brother, Leon (Jenny) Robbins of Lacona, her daughters Brenda (Nathan) Reynolds of Orwell, Nancy (Eric) Dana of Orwell , Shelley (Jon) Roser of Altmar; her sons Richard “Rick” (Maria) Potter of Phoenix, AZ and Milferd (Brandy) Potter of Orwell. She also had many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her daughter Elizabeth “Liz” Skellington, her father Ralph Robbins and her brother Floyd Robbins

Carthage- Patrick L. Cole, 61, of 10619 Jackson Lane, died Sunday morning, April 30, 2017 at his home following a brief illness.

Pat was born February 19, 1956 in Carthage, the son of the late Ronald J. and Jean (Conley) Cole. He was a 1975 graduate of Carthage Central High School where he also played football. Following his graduation, he worked for Carthage Papermakers and then joined the U.S. Air Force serving from 1983-1985. He returned to Carthage and was employed by Agway in Copenhagen, Lofink Motor Company and E.C. Crooks Memorial in Carthage.

He is survived by two brothers and their wives; Frederick V. and Cindy Cole of Carthage and James R. and Darci Cole of Fort Washington, WI, two sisters and their husbands: Cynthia and Dennis Getter of New York Mills and Ella May and Phil Tooly of Tyler, TX and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held in St. James Cemetery in Carthage later, at a date and time to be announced. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home.

Henderson- Reta E. Flitcroft, 78, of Penney Road passed away on Sunday, April 30th at her home where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

The funeral service for Reta will be at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville on Friday May 5th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Ellisburg Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Thursday, May 4th from 3-7 pm.

Reta was born on April 19, 1939 in Tupper Lake, NY a daughter to the late William Rathbun and Mary Denton.. After graduating from Henderson Central School in 1959, Reta went on and earned her Cosmetology certificate and worked as a hairdresser with Vi McGrath. She also worked as food prep at the Gill House in Henderson Harbor and was a karate instructor for several years.

Reta married Gerald “Jerry” Flitcroft on October 29, 1960 at the Henderson Universalist Church in Henderson.

Reta enjoyed going camping, traveling but most of all she enjoyed the time she spent babysitting her grandchildren and being a caregiver for her family and friends.

Reta is survived by her husband of 56 years, Gerald “Jerry”, a daughter, Beth (Donald) Pierce, PA; her son Lorene (Carolyne) Flitcroft, Adams; 2 grandchildren, Kristina Siwek and Jenifer Pierce, 4 great-grandchildren, Joy and Maisie Siwek, Aden and Abel Pierce, 3 sisters, Martha (Robert) Hamilton, Charlene Grandjean, Nancy (George) Rendleman, half- brother, James Rathbun, step-sister, Caroline (John) Janowski, brother-in-law Art LaSelle and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by a sister Elizabeth (Betty) LaSelle, half-sister, Blanche Scalon, 2 half-brothers, Earl Rathbun and William Rathbun, Jr.

Gouverneur - Elfriede “Frieda” Perrigo, 80, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at her home.

Funeral services are at the convenience of the family and arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Elfriede was born on May 23, 1936 in Mammendorf, Germany, the daughter of Martin and Anna Herbts Schallermayer.

She attended school in Gerlinden, Germany and apprenticed in millinery in Munich, Germany.

Frieda married Everett Lacey in November 1953, and he passed away shortly afterwards. She then married the love of her life, Melvin Joseph Perrigo, on September 16, 1955. Melvin passed away in 1975.

She worked at Kinney Drugs, Gouverneur Bowl, and Roma Restaurant, retiring in 1985.

Frieda enjoyed knitting, playing bingo, traveling, and visiting with friends and family.

She is survived by her children Bonnie Hatline of Trent, TX, Kelvin and Tracy (Lambert) Perrigo of Gouverneur, Bryan and Brenda (June) Perrigo of Gouverneur, a daughter-in-law Darlene (Wilmet) Lacey, 9 grandchildren, several great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Thekla Schissel of Otching, Germany, nieces and nephews. Frieda is predeceased by her parents, her 2 husbands Everett and Melvin, a daughter Gloria Perrigo, a son Harold Lacey, a son-in-law Larry Hartline, a brother Martin Schallermayer and a sister Anna Stokes.

John I. & Iva E. Jessmer

PITCAIRN – John I. Jessmer, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully at home on April 27th in East Pitcairn at the age of 82.

John was born on February 9, 1935 in Potsdam, NY to late Florence (Cota) and the late John Jessmer. He graduated from Potsdam Central School and entered the United States Army in 1955 where he worked as a demolition man. He served his country until he was honorably discharged in 1958. He married Iva (Lenie) E. Law on September 27, 1956 at the Edwards United Methodist Church. They moved to East Pitcairn in the 1960’s, residing there until his death.

He worked construction for several companies in New York State as the demolition crew. He was considered one of the best skilled blasters in the area. In the early 1970’s he formed and operated River Road Lumber in Edwards. His sons joined him a few years later in partnership building skid pallets and selling them to paper mills and various businesses. He retired in 2000 from the company when it closed.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, spending time at Blake Flow in Colton and later at Jones Pond in Edwards. He attended East Pitcairn Wesleyan Church in his earlier years. He was a devoted husband to his wife Lenie who was injured in a severe car accident in 1988. They were inseparable marking 60 years of marriage.

John was survived by his wife, Iva E., who passed away two days later on April 29th. Survivors include two sons, Gary J. Jessmer of Oswegatchie, Larry (Densey) Jessmer of East Pitcairn, a half-sister, Dianne Dickson of Madrid, three grandchildren, John P. (Danielle) Jessmer of Pitcairn, Gary J. Jessmer of Georgia and Jill J. (Ryan) Limberg of San Diego. One great grandchild, Nathaniel Limberg of San Diego. He is also survived by one brother-in-law Philip (Gwen) Law of DePeyster, 3 sisters-in-law, Iris (Henry) Waugh of Talcville, Freida Snell of Canton, Doris (Renie) and Joe Durham of Fine, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and in-laws, a brother, Phillip Jessmer, a sister Jerry Ingraham, a brother-n-law Lyle Law, a sister-in-law Bonnie Lewis, and infant granddaughter Heidi Jessmer.

Arrangements are with French Funeral Home in Edwards. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com. At his request, there will be no calling hours. A joint graveside service with his wife will be held on Saturday, May 6th at 3:00 p.m.at the East Pitcairn Cemetery with Rev. John Putney officiating.

PITCAIRN – Iva E. (Lenie) Jessmer, wife of John I. Jessmer, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2017 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, where she had been a patient for the last week with family members by her side.

Iva was born on November 26, 1937 in Pierrepont, NY to Herb and Doris (Hogle) Law. She was brought up on a farm and attended Knox Memorial High School in Russell, NY. She married John I. Jessmer on September 27, 1956 at the Edwards United Methodist Church. They moved to East Pitcairn in the 1960’s, where they lived for about 55 years. She was a homemaker all of her life along with taking part in the family business, River Road Lumber, as a bookkeeper. Lenie was an avid participant in the East Pitcairn Wesleyan Church in the 1970’s serving as a Sunday School and Bible School Teacher, youth leader, hosting parties at her house for teens.

Her hobbies included cooking, fishing, spending time with her husband and family at Blake Flow in Colton and later at Jones Pond in Edwards. She loved playing guitar, which she learned at an early age. She joined family in many music get togethers. She always used her gift of playing and singing within the church setting until she was injured in a car accident in 1988.

Iva is survived by her two sons, Gary J. Jessmer of Oswegatchie, Larry (Densey) Jessmer of East Pitcairn, three grandchildren, John P. (Danielle) Jessmer of Pitcairn, Gary J. Jessmer of Georgia and Jill J. (Ryan) Limberg of San Diego. One great grandchild, Nathaniel Limberg of San Diego. She is also survived by one brother, Philip (Gwen) Law of DePeyster, 3 sisters, Iris (Henry) Waugh of Talcville, Freida Snell of Canton, Irene (Joe) Durham of Fine, a sister-in-law Thea Law of Harrisville, and several nieces and nephews.

Iva was predeceased by her husband John who passed April 27, 2017, parents Herb and Doris Law, a brother, Lyle Law, a sister Bonnie Lewis, and infant granddaughter Heidi Jessmer.

Arrangements are with French Funeral Home in Edwards. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com. There will be a joint graveside service with her husband John held on Saturday, May 6th at 3:00 p.m. at the East Pitcairn Cemetery with Rev. John Putney officiating. Per her request there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Iva’s memory to the Harrisville Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 51, Harrisville NY 13648. There will be a memorial/reception combined with the Law Family Reunion held in July at Gouverneur Recreation Park.

Henderson- Reta E. Flitcroft, 78, of Penney Road passed away on Sunday, April 30th at her home where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

The funeral service for Reta will be at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville on Friday May 5th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Ellisburg Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Thursday, May 4th from 3-7 pm.

Reta was born on April 19, 1939 in Tupper Lake, NY a daughter to the late William Rathbun and Mary Denton.. After graduating from Henderson Central School in 1959, Reta went on and earned her Cosmetology certificate and worked as a hairdresser with Vi McGrath. She also worked as food prep at the Gill House in Henderson Harbor and was a karate instructor for several years.

Reta married Gerald “Jerry” Flitcroft on October 29, 1960 at the Henderson Universalist Church in Henderson.

Reta enjoyed going camping, traveling but most of all she enjoyed the time she spent babysitting her grandchildren and being a caregiver for her family and friends.

Reta is survived by her husband of 56 years, Gerald “Jerry”, a daughter, Beth (Donald) Pierce, PA; her son Lorne (Carolyne) Flitcroft, Adams; 2 grandchildren, Kristina Siwek and Jenifer Pierce, 4 great-grandchildren, Joy and Maisie Siwek, Aden and Abel Pierce, 3 sisters, Martha (Robert) Hamilton, Charlene Grandjean, Nancy (George) Rendleman, half- brother, James Rathbun, step-sister, Caroline (John) Janowski, brother-in-law Art LaSelle and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister Elizabeth (Betty) LaSelle, half-sister, Blanche Scanlon, 2 half-brothers, Earl Rathbun and William Rathbun, Jr.

Richard E. Madill, 74 of 22999 Spring Valley Dr., Watertown, passed April 30, 2017 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.

The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 6 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Watertown.

Burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 5 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home.

Born on December 25, 1942 in Watertown, NY, son of Edwin and Helen Daines Madill, he graduated from Watertown High School in 1961.

During high school he was taken in as a “Junior Firefighter” for the Town of Watertown Fire Department. On February 9, 1961, shortly after his 18th birthday, he became a full member of Town of Watertown Fire Department. He worked for five years delivering milk for Rutland Hills Dairy and he also worked a short time at Knowlton Brothers Paper Co. In 1964 he became a full time firefighter at Fort Drum.

In March of 1970 he was elected President to the County Rescue 88. One of the purposes of Rescue 88 was to provide a rescue vehicle that could bring needed supplies to fire scene around the county – for example, extra pumps, lights and generators. Mr. Madill was elected 2nd Assistant Chief for the Town of Watertown Fire Department in April 1976. In April 1979 he was elected 1st Assistant Chief and served as Chief from 1979 – 1985 and was instrumental in preparing the fire department for the expansion on the west side with the development of the Salmon Run Mall.

On January 1, 1980 he received an appointment as Jefferson County Deputy Fire Coordinator. In July of 1985 he was appointed as County Fire & Emergency Medical Services Coordinator (Part Time) and became full time in April of 1988. In June of 1992 he was appointed as County 911 Coordinator by the County Administrator James Wright. In May of 2000 he was appointed as temporary Director of Fire and Emergency Management Services for Jefferson County and in February of 2001 he was appointed permanent Director of Fire and Emergency Management Services of Jefferson County. One of his major accomplishments as Fire & EMS Director was the installation of the Enhanced 911 system. The enhanced system allowed for the origin of the emergency call to be displayed, allowing more accuracy in dispatch information.

Dick was an active member of the NYS Fire Coordinator’s Association, FASNY, NYS Association of Fire Chiefs, and many others.

Among his survivors are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lisa A. and Mark Staie, Lowville, Penelope S. and Jon Massey, CO, Debra L. Madill, Watertown; two grandchildren, Zachary Staie and Marja and (Jim) Walker; 5 great grandchildren, Audrina, Jaxson, Briella, Cora and Onika; two sisters, Barbara Mattis, MD, Sandy Surace, Watertown; several nieces and nephews.
