Potsdam - Richard Gary Ashley, 69, passed away Thursday May 4, 2017 at Crown Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Cortland. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home, where Richard’s memorial gathering will be held May 17th, from 2 to 3 pm with a service at 3 pm. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Norwood.
Richard was born on November 24, 1947 in Massena, son of the late James J. and Frances (Moody) Ashley and attended Norwood/Norfolk High School. He worked in Rochester until his disability.
He is survived by seven children; Victory Ashley and Richard Ashley of North Lawrence, Heidi Ashley of Rochester, Jimmy Ashley of North Lawrence, Rebecca Ashley of Oswego, Sherry Ashley and Jennifer Ashley, both of Brasher Falls, one sister and brother in law, Donna and Bill Nichols of Potsdam and numerous grandchildren. He was predeceased by seven siblings; Eva Self, Harold Ashley, Lowell Ashley, Arthur Ashley Jean Vari, Raymond Ashley and Rose Filer.

DeKalb Junction— Rose B. Soulia, 89, of Gibbons Street, DeKalb Jct., died Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Highland Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since November 2016.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, May 19th at 10:30 AM in St. Mary’s Church, Canton with Fr. Douglas J. Lucia as celebrant. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6-8 PM at Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 21 Park Street, Canton. Private Burial will be held in East Road Cemetery, Heuvelton.
Rose was born March 21, 1928, in DePeyster, NY, a daughter of the late, William & Rosa (Richie) Kelley. She was a member of St. Henry’s Church in DeKalb Junction.
Rose worked for Losurdo Foods in Heuvelton for a number of years. She also was active in the DeKalb Fireman’s Field Days, St. Henry’s Turkey Dinners and she helped take care of the rectory at St. Henry’s.
Surviving are her children, Linda Soulia of Dekalb Jct., Barbara Haynes and companion Robert Nasworthy of Watertown, Gerald (Patricia) Soulia of Massena and Danny (Lyne) Soulia of Canton; one sister, Emma Gagnon of Russellville, MO; sister-in-law, Theresa Kelley of Waddington; as well as, forty-seven grandchildren , great and great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by four children, Geraldine, Richard and twins Robert and Ronald; six brothers, Frederick “Bud”, William “Bill”, Weldon, Kit, Frances and Lindon; and five sisters, Mary Kelley, Helen Lamaca, Lillian Hoyt, Martha Lamaca and Beatrice Young.
Rose was fond of crocheting, making stuffed animals, playing BINGO and cards and reading.

John Charles Buckingham
John Charles “Jack” Buckingham passed quietly at his home in Lake of the Woods on Thursday, May 11, 2017.
Jack was born on March 1, 1927 in Watertown, NY. He served as a Corpsman in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Jack graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in Utica, NY and began his career on the New York Central Railroad. His railroad career took him to numerous locations along the east coast prior to his assuming his final position with the Association of American Railroads in Washington, DC where he retired as an Executive Director in 1989. Upon moving to Lake of the Woods in 1991, Jack became one of the original Meadows Farms Golf Course staff where he became well known as a starter and marshal for nearly 20 years. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fredericksburg and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus for over 70 years.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Mary Jane Flynn Buckingham; his seven children, John Jr., Susan, Thomas, Eileen, Barbara, Jean, and Robert and their spouses; their 21 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 18 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fredericksburg.

Robert H. Scott, age 74, of West Stockholm and Colton, NY passed away on May 11, 2017 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT surrounded by his loving family. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Service on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-7pm. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 11 am at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam with Rev. Bob grew up the youngest of six kids on the Scott Family Farm on the South Canton Road, Potsdam. He later graduated from Potsdam Central School in 1962. He then very proudly entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1965. Bob attended SUNY Canton form 1965 – 1966. He married the love of his life Janice (David) Scott of Ogdensburg at Notre Dame Church on May 20, 1966. Bob worked at Potsdam Welding for several years as a draftsman before establishing his career at Alcoa, retiring in 2001 as a Senior Designer. He was known by many as “Scotty.”
Bob is survived by his wife of almost 51 years Janice D Scott his children; Cassie & Randy Reagan, Robert Jr. & Shelia Scott, Meaghan & Rob Voss and Richard & Debra Scott, his grandchildren Alexandria (Kyle Laughlin) and Victoria Reagan (Nathan Lint), Abigail and Robert Scott III, Cheyne (Nathaniel Perkins), Maisie and Robert Scott Voss and Olivia, Tyler and Jordyn Scott. A brother Alton, and countless in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Bob was predeceased by his infant daughter Carrie Ann on November 16, 1968; his parents Lauren and Ann Scott; brothers Lauren Jr. and Jack Scott, sisters Mary Bunstone and Lorraine Jones and many in laws and close friends.
Bob was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He was happiest watching them play sports and being involved in all aspects of their lives. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to drive. He loved hockey trips, Fox News, Gennesee Beer, Suduko, Politics, family gatherings, agitating family, hunting season with Steve and Darrell, and above all spending time with family and friends.
Bob was a lifetime member of the Potsdam Elks Lodge, member of the VFW, West Stockholm Volunteer Fire Dept., served as Stockholm Town Councilman for several years and was a volunteer driver for DAV (Disabled American Veterans) for many years.

NATURAL BRIDGE – Shawn Ogrodnik, 27, 6714 Old State Rd., died at home on May 11, 2017.
Born in Carthage on December 15, 1989, he graduated from Harrisville Central High School and attended college. He was currently employed by Nelson’s Tree Service. He is survived by his mother, Dawn Ogrodnik, his sister, Ashley Moore and his grandmother, Joan Ogrodnik.

Rita M. Lapointe
Rita Marie Coseo Lapointe, a former Registered Nurse and mother of six, died on Thursday, December 29th, 2016 in Boston, MA after a brief illness. She was 100. Mrs. Lapointe was born in 1916 in Watertown to Frances Alice Donoghue Coseo of Gananoque, Ontario and Frank Peter Coseo of Watertown. She was predeceased by three brothers, Robert (Bob), Harold, and the Rev. Msgr. Gordon Coseo. She graduated from Holy Family high school at the age of 16, where, despite her diminutive stature, she played center on the girls’ basketball team. Ms. Coseo completed her nursing training at the old Mercy Hospital in 1936. During her rounds as a nurse at Mercy, she met and later married Lawrence Anthony Lapointe, originally of Trois-Rivières, Quebec, in 1938. Together, they raised six children, all of whom attended Holy Family elementary and Immaculate Heart Academy, renamed Immaculate Heart Central high school. The family spent their summers at a camp initially built by her father-in-law on the then unpopulated shore of Henderson Bay near Sackets Harbor.
Mrs. Lapointe became the Assistant Director of Nursing at Madonna Home and retired in 1978. She and her family were active members of Holy Family Parish in Watertown and St. Andrew Church in Sackets Harbor. Rita and Larry purchased and renovated a home on Academy Street in Watertown in 1938 where they lived until 1978. Upon their retirements from Madonna Home and the New York Life Insurance Company, respectively, Rita and Larry relocated to Ocean Springs, MS. Mr. Lapointe predeceased his wife in 1991.
Mrs. Lapointe relocated to Vero Beach, FL in 1999 where she lived until 2009 when she moved to the Boston area. She is survived by her six children: Yvonne Cevello (Pleasanton, CA), Joseph Lapointe (Newcomb, NY), Mary Alice Lapointe (Boston, MA), David Lapointe (Ocean Springs, MS), Stephen Lapointe (Vero Beach, FL) and Jane Lapointe (Portland, OR); 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Goddard House, Olmsted Neighborhood, 165 Chestnut Street, Brookline, MA 02445 where Rita received loving care during the last years of her life. Family and friends will assemble for an interment at Glennwood Cemetery at 11AM on June 10th followed by an informal luncheon for family and friends at The Hilton Garden Inn in Watertown.
Edwin H. Krupkin
Edwin H. Krupkin, 80, formerly of Watertown, passed away at his home in Zephyrhills, FL on Sunday, May 14, 2017.
The funeral will be held at Degel Israel Synagogue on Sunday, May 21, with Anita Brown, Lay Leader, presiding at 10AM with burial following in the synagogue’s cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.
Eddie was born in Watertown on October 3, 1936, son of Louis and Ora Ruth (Gittleman) Krupkin. He was a graduate of Watertown High School and Canton ATC. He served in the Army Reserves as a military policeman.
On September 8, 1966 he married Patricia Davis in Watertown and she passed on April 6, 1991. Eddie later married Patricia J. (LaChance ) Carbone on April 25, 1997 at the Jamaica Grande in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
For 52 years he was the owner and operator of the Apex Army & Navy Store on Public Square until his retirement in 2009. The family business had been started in 1897 by his grandfather, Benjamin Krupkin, on Court St. and later operated by his father, Louis. He had been a member of Degel Israel Synagogue, Kiwanis Club of Watertown, Downtown Business Association, American Legion Post 61’s Color Guard, and Cosmopolitan Dance Club. In his early years, Eddie was a YMCA State Wrestling Champion and later in life he participated in various 5K and 10K races. Golf was his passion and he had also been a member of the Watertown Golf Club. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren, his dogs, and his wife, Pat. Eddie will always be remembered for his generosity to his customers, his friends, his community, and his family.
Along with his wife, Pat, Eddie is survived by his two children, Stephen D. Krupkin and wife, Elizabeth, Evanston, IL and Nicole Harrington and companion, Michael McCarty, Watertown; his wife’s three children, Carmen Carbone and wife, Katrina, Watertown, Donald Carbone, Zephrhills, FL, and Angela Clanton and husband, Art, Annapolis MD; eleven grandchildren; his brother, Sidney Krupkin and wife, Susan, Sarasota,FL; his sister, Carole Koenig and husband, Harvey, Syracuse; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. His brother, Stuart, and a stepson Christopher Wilson both died before him.

Helen M. Howard, 80, of 24428 Rt. 11, Calcium, passed May 15, 2017 at her home.

She was born on June 24, 1936 in Watertown, the daughter of Albert and Alice (Bowers) Burker. She attended Watertown High School.
Helen married Donald L. “Sonny” Howard on December 31, 1956, in Watertown. The couple resided in Watertown and in 1995 moved to Lake’s Trailer Park, Calcium.
She was a homemaker and she enjoyed playing cards, puzzles, Bingo and loved her animals.
Among her survivors are two sons and their companions, Buck Howard and Rosie A. Rickard, Watertown, Charles H. Howard and Evelyn Bentley, Evans Mills; two daughters and a son in law, Alice M. and Wayne R. Metzler, Calcium, Kelly M. Howard and her companion, Tom Biondolillo, Black River; two sisters and their husbands, Pauline and Pete Countryman, Watertown, Carol and Bob Dixon, Watertown; two brothers and their wives, Gus and Sally Burker, Carthage, Gene and Wanda Burker, Utah; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and her two cats, Pooh Bear and Big Man.
Besides her parents her husband, Donald L. Howard Sr., passed April 24, 2008.

Mary T. Soares
Mary T. Soares, 100, formerly of So. Pleasant Street, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2017 at Samaritan Summit Village, where she has been a resident.
Mrs. Soares was born March 11, 1917 in Oswego, NY, daughter of Joseph and Pasqualina Signorelli Lettiere. She attended Cooper Street School and North Junior High School until she was needed at home to help with her younger siblings. On April 29, 1944 she married Joseph J. Soares at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church with Reverend Benoit Dostie officiating. Mr. Soares died December 29, 1980. When Mrs. Soares was employed she was a waitress at Dantes Restaurant and a seamstress for Model Homes. She retired in her mid 50’s.
Mary was a communicant of Holy Family Church, a volunteer for the church and a member of the Legion of Mary. During WWII she was a volunteer for the USO. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing, especially making quilts. And true to her Italian heritage, she enjoyed preparing her Sunday pasta dinners for the family- her sons-in-law will attest to the perfection of her sauce and meatballs. Mary was thrilled to celebrate her 100th birthday on March 11 th, attended by made of her family and friends.
Mary’s family would like to express their thanks to the 3rd floor, A Wing, staff at Samaritan Summit Village for the compassionate care they gave their mother.

NORWOOD— Funeral Services for 59 year old George Eng, a resident of 24 Baldwin Ave, Norwood, will be held Friday, May 19th at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Church in Norwood with Rev. Msgr. John Murphy and Rev. Andrew Amyot presiding. Burial will follow the service at Calvary Cemetery in Norwood. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Mr. Eng passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 15, 2017 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
George is survived by his wife of 34 years, Theresa, his four sons, Jonathan, Daniel, Zachary and Joshua and his daughter, Olivia. He is also survived by his mother, Lai Ching and his two sisters, Rose and Helen Eng, who reside in Woodhaven, NY. He was pre-deceased by his father.
George was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 1, 1958. George obtained a degree as a draftsman/engineer. For the past 12 years he was honored to be a Bridge and Tunnel Officer for the Tri-Borough Bridge and Tunnel Authority in New York City, specifically on the Whitestone Bridge. He had many, many friends at his job that respected him as their friend and colleague.
George’s life focus was to take care of his family who he loved deeply. He was beyond proud of his five children and their multitude of accomplishments. He enjoyed going to their sporting events and took great pride in all their academic achievements. In lieu of flowers, please take the time to help someone in need as he would have done. The funeral for Lorraine Margaret (Beutel) Them, 83 of 2860 E. Clinton Trail, Charlotte, Michigan will be Saturday, May 20, 2017 in the chapel of TLC Funeral Home, Inc. at Noon with Pastor Shane Ryan officiating. Mrs. Beutel - Them died November 22, 2016 at the Battle Creek Manor in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Kathleen M. Robbins 82, formerly of Williamstown, NY passed away Monday May 15, 2017 at Seneca Hill Manor with her family by her side. She was born January 27, 1935 in the Town of Diana a daughter of Elmer & Ethel Winks Morrison. She had lived in the Williamstown area since 1952 moving from Lowville, NY. Kathleen was a member of the Williamstown Elementary cafeteria staff for nearly 20 years. She was also a member of the Hastings- Gorski American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed camping.
Surviving are two daughters, Brenda & Harry Ostrander, Parish, NY and Keitha & Rod Britton, Williamstown, NY , 5 grandchildren; Robert & Melissa, John & Tracey and Kristopher Ostrander all of Parish, NY, Rodney & Angela Britton, Waterloo, II and Brenda & John Leemann, Williamstown, NY, 10 great grandchildren, one sister, Grace Newman, Ocala, FL and several nieces & nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her longtime companion, John Molnar, March 3, 2012 and four sisters, Beatrice Kaler, Betty Weller, Virginia Dwyer and Karen Hosmer and a brother, Elmer Morrison. Francis, affectionately known as Shorty, was born on January 1, 1953 in Watertown, NY to the late Roland and Georgia (Merritt) Wright. He was educated in the Watertown City Schools. Shorty was employed with Yellow Cab of Watertown as a cab driver for many years. Mr. Wright also worked for the City of Watertown and the City of Daytona in Daytona Beach, FL. In his free time, Shorty enjoyed going to hunting camp with his friend Carl Harding.
Shorty leaves behind his long-time companion, Rose Mercarter, Watertown and step-daughter Nancy Corey, Copenhagen. He will be missed by his siblings, Pamela McDonald, Georgia; Rose Youngs, Florida; Jeffrey Wright, Florida; Martha Leone, Rochester; Marie Locy, Carthage; Lisa Mazzella, Georgia; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Betty J. Miller, age 84 formerly of Brownville; passed away Wednesday morning at St. Luke’s’ Hospital, New Hartford, NY.
Betty was born February 9, 1933 in Watertown, the daughter of David and Gertrude Knapp Miller. She attended schools in Adams Center, Belleville and Brownville.
Betty worked at Jefferson County Rehabilitation Center on West Main St. Watertown.
She is survived by several cousins.

Richard Havens Kimball
CANTON – Mr. Richard Havens Kimball, age 90, a resident of 380 Judson Street Road, and Phoenix, Arizona, died at his home on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.
Mr. Kimball was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on January 10, 1927, the son of George W. and Francis (Havens) Kimball. He attended public schools in Waltham and Dorchester, MA and in Chester, NH, graduating from Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH in 1947. In 1953, he graduated from University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1952 and later resigned from active duty to pursue a library science career, graduating with a Masters of Library Science Degree from Simmons College, Boston in 1964. He maintained his military connection through his enlistment in the USAF Active Reserve. He worked with the US Air Force Academy and the ROTC Liaison Program, retiring in 1981 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his long career in the Air Force, he had the honor of being awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. While on Air Force active duty in 1969-70, he earned an MPS Degree in Political Science from Auburn University. In 1975, he married Donna (Farnsworth) Haig.
As a librarian, Mr. Kimball held positions with Skidmore College, State University of New York at Albany, the North Country Reference & Research Council in Canton, a position from which he retired in 1989 as Executive Director. Mr. Kimball was an antique automobile and airplane enthusiast. He was a member of several organizations, including the Antique Car Club of America, the American Aviation Historical Society, and The Nature Conservancy. He will be remembered by those that love him as the kindest, smartest man they knew.
Mr. Kimball’s survivors include his wife, Donna, a daughter, Danielle M. Brown and her husband, Joseph of Massena; a step-daughter, JoAnn B. Snider of Massena; and a step-son, Michael J. Haig of Tucson, Arizona; and a sister, Mary (Kimball) Bosworth of Halifax, MA. He also leaves four grandchildren, Meaghan Breaux and her husband, Nathan, Corey Snider, Madeline and Sophia Brown; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Esther (Kimball) Goodwin of Chester, NH.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Canton.
Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to The Nature Conservancy, the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Canton, or Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.

Lorene Davey
LOWVILLE - Lorene Olson Davey, born to the late Conradine Rose Mackenzie and Fredrick W. Olson on March 18, 1954 in Jacksonville, Florida, passed peacefully to rest May 17, 2017 in her home.
After graduating from Mayville Central School in 1972, Lorene earned an Associates in Applied Science in Nursing from Jamestown Community College. Since receiving her degree, Lorene’s passion for helping people and love for her work as a nurse stayed with her throughout her life and only grew stronger as time went on. Lorene relocated to Pensacola, Florida to continue working as a nurse, and this was where she met her husband, Derek MacLean Davey. They were wed March 31, 1979 on Naval Air Station Pensacola. Here, her late son, Seamus MacLean Davey was born. Derek’s military duty led them to Washington, North Carolina, and finally back to New York, where they raised their four children and where she continued working as an RN until her retirement in April of 2017, after graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Utica with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, 2011. Lorene was constantly striving to perfect her craft in her field as she attended many seminars, courses, and even a trip to Brazil during her time at SUNY Utica.
Lorene lived for her children and eventually her five grandchildren. Nothing brought her more joy than traveling to see them around the world, whenever possible. She became a Gold Star Mother in 2005. She was born to be a grandmother and looked forward to her retirement, where she could be a Mimi full-time.
Lorene’s devotion to helping others, to aiding and supporting children, to arduously living and maintaining an active lifestyle was all on display throughout her life with her involvement in lifeguarding, boy scouts and girl scouts, teaching Sunday School and confirmation classes, Habitat for Humanity, and coaching numerous Odyssey of the Mind teams. Lorene enjoyed running and swimming, leading her to complete many triathlons into her 50s. She was an active advocate of Organ Donation and spread awareness throughout all of northern and central NYS.
Lorene is survived by her husband Derek M. Davey of Lowville, their children Shiloh (Ryan) Mackey, Brittany (Andreas) Bedernik, and Austin (Jamie) Byrd, their grandchildren, Piper and Evelyn Mackey, Cullen and Alexander Bedernik, and Maddox Byrd, Step-mother Terry Olson, Mother-in-law Marget Davey, numerous siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, and an amazing extended family. Lorene had a love and energy in life that touched everyone who was around her.
Calling hours will be held at Sundquist Funeral Home in Lowville, Saturday, May 20, 2017, from 3-5pm. A funeral will be held at the Lowville First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at 1 pm.
