Beverly E. Dalton

Richville - Beverly E. Dalton, 86, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at her home.

Funeral services are private with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Beverly was born on May 29, 1930 in Fowler, the daughter of Roland B. and Cleo Allen Dalton.

She graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1947, attended A.B. Hepburn School of Nursing, received certification in public health, graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science degree, and performed graduate work at the universities of Rochester and Cortland.

Beverly worked in the healthcare field for many years. She worked for the NYS Dept. of Health in Gouverneur, for St. Lawrence County in the Massena area, served as a public health nurse in Alaska on Kodiak Island and in Metlakatka, and at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. She also was employed at Cortland County Health Department in Marathon and Cortland and at the St. Lawrence County Psychiatric Center in Ogdensburg.

Bev served on the advisory committees of SUNY Canton and BOCES, was a surrogate member and decision making member of New York State for persons disabled, a member of the United Church of Richville, and Richville Friendship Class.

She enjoyed photography, genealogy, travel, pets, and pet therapy.

Bev is survived by her great nephew Chad Dalton of Richville who she raised from an infant. She is also survived by her brothers Roland Dalton of Marcellus, James Dalton of South Carolina, Robert Dalton of Phoenix, NY, Gary Dalton of DeKalb Jct., her foster brothers James Allen of Central Square and Richard Allen of Florida. Bev is predeceased by her parents, a brother Norman Dalton, a sister Nancy Ellingsworth, nieces Sheryl Dalton and Sandra Dalton, a great niece Caitlyn Whitney and great nephew Nicholas Bloodgood.

MASSENA- Alice J. King, RN, “Bunny,” 96, formerly of Cline Drive, peacefully passed away early Tuesday morning, May 16, 2017 at the Highland Nursing Home.

Alice was born November 3, 1920 in Norwood, daughter of the late Fred S. and Bessie Minkler Hale. She was a 1938 graduate of Norwood High School and a 1942 graduate from St. Lawrence State Hospital School of Nursing.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Olav Daniel Servick and Donald Smith. A marriage to Lloyd King later ended in divorce.

Alice was a Registered Nurse, working first at the Doctors Hospital, Belleview Hospital, and Potsdam Hospital, before becoming a college nurse at Potsdam State University. She later worked and taught at St. Lawrence State Hospital School of Nursing.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Massena, and Daughters of American Revolution, Nihanawate Chapter, where she served as treasurer and president. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Cretona 516, Grandmother’s Club of OES, serving as president and vice-president. Alice was also an active volunteer with the American Red Cross, at local blood drives for many years. She served as secretary for the Hale Cemetery Association, as she was an avid buff of genealogy. She also belonged to the RN Club, Birthday Club, Norwood Golden Agers, and the Massena Senior Citizens.

Alice is survived by her son, Joseph Daniel Servick and his wife, Judy (Balinskas) of Huntsville, AL; her daughter, Sandy (Servick) Hayes and her husband, Bruce Hayes of Cincinnati, OH; her grandchildren, Danny Servick, and his wife, Angie, and David Servick, all of Huntsville, AL; Julie (Kramer) Wachter and her husband, Tim, and Lori Dearnell and her husband, Scott, all of Cincinnati, OH. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Sam and Jack Servick, Kylie and Kaitlyn Kramer, Ava Wachter, and Brady and Aubrey Dearnell; and many nieces and nephews, especially her special and caring great niece, Tammy Holmes of Massena.

She was predeceased by a brother, Jefferson Hale; and three sisters, Marjorie Hale Grant, Irene Hale Moffett, and Eleanor Hale Crosby.

Friends may call Saturday 10:00 – 11:45 AM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM. The members of the Eastern Star will conduct their memorial ritual at 11:45 AM. Burial will be held privately at the Hale Cemetery, Norfolk.

Charles C. Bourquin

CAPE VINCENT, NY – Charles C. Bourquin, 93, of Mason Road in Cape Vincent, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2017 at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home, Cape Vincent, NY.

There will be no calling hours. There will be a service at the Three Mile Bay Baptist Church and burial at Riverside Cemetery in Cape Vincent at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Charles was born on July 7, 1923 a son to Christopher and Florence (Pope) Bourquin. He attended Three Mile Bay School.

Charles married Wava Pilon on October 23, 1943 in the Three Mile Bay Baptist Church.

Charles purchased the farm from his father in the 1940’s, where he and his wife ran the farm on Fox Creek Road. He was active in the Dairy Herd Improvement Association as well as the farming community. He retired in 1979 and spent winters in Frostproof, FL and summers at their home on Pillar Point. In 1995, he became a full time resident of Florid until he moved back to Cape Vincent in 2009.

He loved to fish, do crafts, and play shuffle board.

He is survived by his wife, Wava; his children, Lewis Bourquin, Washington; Sharon (David) Johnson, Clayton; Charles Bourquin, Chaumont; Linda (Terry) Aubertine, Cape Vincent; Jeannie (Donald) Docteur, Cape Vincent; Wendy (Andrew) Binsley, Cape Vincent; and John Bourquin, Adams; 21 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren; his sister, Elizabeth Bourquin of Chaumont and brother, George of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Vickie Bourquin (Wiley).

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to make a donation to The Alzheimer’s Association of Central New York, 441 West Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204.

Funeral services for George E. Bayne, age 94 of DePeyster will be held at 11:00am on Saturday at the Cornerstone Wesleyan Church with Rev. Carl Chapman, Rev. Paul Dettmer, Rev. Tom Nichols and Pastor David Norman officiating. Burial will follow services are Hillcrest Cemetery in Heuvelton.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 2-4pm & 6-8pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mr. Bayne passed away at his home on Monday (May 15, 2017) surrounded by his loving family.

Surviving are his 3 sons Mark Bayne of Churchville NY, Stephen Bayne & his companion Marilyn Moore of DePeyster and Phillip Bayne & his wife Shelley of DePeyster; a daughter Judy Morgan & her husband James of Churchville NY; a sister Shirley Layo & her husband Stanley of Cicero NY; grandchildren Zachari & Ethan Morgan, Elizabeth Otis, Breanna Koerick & her husband Kevin; step grandson Patrick Umphries; great-grandson Kaiden Koerick along with nieces, nephews & cousins. His wife Ruth along with two brothers Lester & Donald Bayne predeceased him.

Born in the town of Macomb, NY on December 10, 1922, the son of Sherd & Dona (Parish) Bayne. He graduated from Heuvelton High School class of 1939 and attended Houghton College the following year. He married Ruth A. Seaman on January 24, 1948 at the Heuvelton Wesleyan Church with the ceremony being performed by the bride’s brother Rev. Edwin C. Seaman. After their marriage the couple lived and worked at the Bayne Homestead farm in Macomb until purchasing their own farm in DePeyster in 1951. George also drove bus for the Heuvelton Central School for over 23.5 years while performing his farming duties. The farm is still operated years later by their sons, Stephen and Phillip. Mr. Bayne was an active member of the Heuvelton Wesleyan Church where he was a trustee for 50 years and served as Vice-Chairman, and also served on the Board of Directors of the Gouverneur Co-op Association.

George enjoyed singing and playing the piano with Ruth, fishing, playing baseball in his younger years and growing corn. Memorial contributions can be made to the Seaman Memorial Fund at Houghton College, 1 Willard Ave, Houghton, NY 14744.

Edward D. Brady

Edward D. Brady, 65, of 2nd Street Redwood, NY, passed away Monday, May 15th at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Edward was born on September 8, 1951 in Watertown, the son of Daniel S. Sr. and Jean E. Latham Brady. He graduated from Immaculate Heart Central in Watertown. He received his AA degree from Jefferson Community College and then earned his BS degree from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Ed married Dorothy Dollinger on September 24, 1994 at St. Francis Xavier in Redwood with Msgr. Bailey officiating.

Ed was a Senior Case Worker for the Jefferson County Department of Human Services in Watertown for 25 years. He was active with the Watertown Volleyball Association for 25 years. He was also the Fire Department Commissioner since 2006, a member of the 1000 Islands Sportsmen’s Club, and a Church School Teacher at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, their daughter, Megan Brady, Redwood; son Gary Dollinger, Watertown; his granddaughters Taylor and Emily; his brothers, Daniel S. Brady Jr., Watertown, NY, Shawn G. Brady and his wife, Vanessa, Three Mile Point, NY, and Colin J. Brady and his companion Evelyn Middlemiss, Alexandria Bay, NY; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 21st from 2 - 5 pm at Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. The funeral mass will be held at 11 am at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Alexandria Bay on Monday, May 22nd with Fr. Doug Comstock officiating. Burial will take place following the funeral at Redwood Cemetery.

Massena: Steven N. Blais, age 67, passed away early Tuesday morning (May 16, 2017) at Massena Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Friends and family are welcome to call at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena Sunday May 21, 2017 from 1:00 P.M. until the time of services at 3:00 P.M. officiated by Father Matthew Jones. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family. The AMVETS and American Legion Post #79 joint service is to be held promptly at 1:00 P.M. As per the family’s request in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be shared with the Potsdam Booster Club; P.O. Steven was born to the late Norman and Margaret (Jacobs) Blais on April 29, 1950 in Massena, NY. He attended Massena schools and graduated from Massena High School in 1968. He married Sheila Michaud on August 29, 1970 at Sacred Heart Church with Father Billmeyer presiding.

He later attended Canton ATC and was soon employed with Reynolds Metals which he retired from after 32 years of service. Steven was still driven to work and help people. Shortly after his retirement, he began to work at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino as a security guard, where he worked part time and enjoyed the comradery he encountered. Steven enjoyed traveling to Florida and the times spent camping with friends and family. Steven was also a “ham radio” enthusiast obtaining his first license at the young age of 16. He was a member of the Massena Moose Lodge, American Legion Post #79, and the AMVETS Post #4.

He is survived by his wife Sheila, of 47 years, a daughter Amy and husband Thomas W. McCabe of Potsdam, NY, two grandchildren Paige Erin and Thomas H. McCabe, siblings Nancy (Ken) Scholl of Clermont, FL and Norma-Jean (Richard) Von Hagn of Elmira, NY. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Steven was predeceased by his parents and a son Bradley James in 1973.

Michael S. Flanders passed away May 14, 2017 in Willcox, AZ. He was born August 28, 1955 in Watertown, NY to Richard K. Flanders (deceased) and Patricia Scanlin Flanders.

He resided in Arizona and retired from the Willcox School System.

Surviving are his wife Kris and daughter Megan, Willcox, AZ; mother Patricia Scanlin Guga, Watertown; brother Richard Flanders Jr. and wife Joyce, Chaumont; sister MaryAnn Fitzgerald and husband George, Vermont; sister Jami Edwards, Watertown; sister Jennifer Gokey and husband Jeff, Watertown; also several nephews and cousins.

Faye Weeks Fleming

WANAKENA/SYRACUSE - Faye Weeks Fleming, 82, of Wanakena and Syracuse, NY, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017, after a hard fought battle with cancer. A long time resident of the North Country, she was born on July 1, 1934 in Talcville, NY, and graduated from Hermon-Dekalb Central School. She attended Business School in Watertown, NY, and later worked at both Star Lake Hospital and then at St. Lawrence University in the Dean’s Office and the Math Department for twenty-five years. She lived in Canton for 40 years, and loved nothing more than to spend time at her camp in the Adirondacks.

Faye had many hobbies and talents. She loved to travel, and explored the world with her husband Dan. She also loved crafting, sewing, cooking, gardening and camping. However, her greatest passion was people—both family and friends. She took every opportunity to visit with her dearest friends and family on her porch at camp, and there was no time better spent.

Faye is predeceased by her parents, Nyla (Cassidy) and James Doyle, and her brother Gary Doyle. She is survived by her daughter Teresa McKenney of Syracuse, NY; her daughter Maureen Gould (Gerry) of Syracuse, NY; her son Donald J. Weeks (Cynthia) of Portland, CT; and seven grandchildren-Amanda and Rebecca McKenney, Dana and Tammy Gould, and Russell, Meagan and Nathan Weeks.

There will be a celebration of Faye’s life on May 27th at the French Family Funeral Home, 4159 State Hwy 3, Star Lake, NY. Calling hours will be from 11 am-1 pm, followed immediately by services and burial. Jack Connelly, 79, of Chula Vista, California formerly of South Colton, peacefully passed away on Monday, May 8, 2017.

Jack was the son of the late Bernard and Irene Connelly. He was also predeceased by a brother, Jerry in 2012.

Jack is survived by his wife Patrice; two stepchildren, Tommy and Rosie; siblings Peggy Cashman of Canton, Steve (Nancy) Connelly of Hannawa Falls, Dianne Connelly of Columbia, Maryland, Andy (Kathy)

Connelly of South Colton; along with many nieces and nephews.

Jack spent his last few days peacefully under the care of Gentiva Hospice in San Diego, California.

Robert P. Gillespie, 90, of Calcium, passed away Wednesday May 17th at the Samaritan Medical Center.

A funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday May 23rd at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church at a time to be announced. Calling hours are Monday May 22nd from 4 pm - 8 pm at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown.

Clayton & LaFargeville; The funeral for Mrs. Elaine M. VanAlstyne, age 70, who died Tuesday, May 16th at the Samaritan Keep Home, will be at 2pm on Sunday, May 21st, at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton, with Reverend Don Briant officiating. Calling hours will be from Noon until the time of the service.

Elaine was born Nov. 26th, 1946, the daughter of Delos and Ruth Lee Hagen and later was adopted by George Doner.

She graduated from Clayton High School. In the 1960’s, Elaine was Secretary and Treasurer of Diamond R. Riding Club.

Elaine had a great love of horses, horseback riding, and partook in several horse show competitions. She enjoyed bingo, NASCAR, and was an Elvis Presley enthusiast.

On April 17th, 1965, she married Eugene VanAlstyne at the Depauville Methodist Church.

In her earlier years she worked for a time in the kitchen at the Thousand Islands Club on Wellesley Island and later at the Century Warehouse on West Main Street in Watertown. Elaine’s last job was caregiver for Mrs. Fred Gailey of LaFargeville.

Surviving besides her husband, are two sons and their wives, Scott (Terri) of LaFargeville, and Michael (Deena) of Clayton; four grandchildren, Joshua VanAlstyne, Jessica Gould, Caleb and Ty VanAlstyne; three sisters, Barbara Eaton of Tennessee, Kathy Pierce of California, and Mrs. Bruce (Gail) Herbest of Maine; an Aunt, Mrs. Thomas (Nellie) VanNess; a sister-in-law, Sharon Connell of Clayton; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is pre-deceased by her Uncle Thomas VanNess, a nephew James Connell, and her brother-in-law, Dennis Connell.

MASSENA - Hugh William McElheran, 86, unexpectedly passed away May 17, 2017 at the St. Regis Nursing Home.

Hugh was born in Massena on April 20, 1931 to George Ray McElheran and Laura J. Campbell McElheran. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother Reginald McElheran and sisters Grace Nitchmann and Laura Ann Sheets.

Hugh is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years June M. Bryant McElheran; daughter Patricia Rockhill (Brian Snider) of Massena, NY; son Daniel McElheran, D.O. of Lewiston, CA; daughter Kathleen (Steven) Chapin of Macedon, NY; grandson Adam (Ashley) Chapin of Newark, NY; grandson Kevin Hugh Chapin of New Haven, CT; great-grandson Blake Chapin of Newark, NY; and his sisters Leta O’Shaughnessy of St. Louis, MO; Betty (James) DeCarr of Massena, Janet Brownell of Massena, and Carol Elias of Massena. Hugh is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Hugh had a love and respect for all of nature’s creatures. His beloved dogs Rusty, Pepper and Lucy always carried a very special place in his heart and he missed them dearly.

Hugh graduated from Massena High School in 1951. He was a Korean Conflict veteran, having served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1960, when he was honorably discharged. He graduated from Canton ATC and went on to work at the New York Power Authority, retiring in 1989 after 28 years of dedicated service.

A private graveside service will be held at the Louisville Community Church Cemetery.

WATERTOWN — Pamela M. White, 56, died Thursday, May 18, of complications from dementia with Lewey bodies.

Pam was born Aug, 15, 1960, in Bellville, Ill., a daughter of Maurice Q. and Janice (McGowen) Merett.

She was a graduate of Columbus, Ohio, School for Girls, and Georgetown University, with a bachelor’s degree in American history from the School of Foreign Service.

She married Perry White, managing editor of the Watertown Daily Times, on April 15, 2000, in Adams. A previous marriage to Martin Alires ended in divorce.

Pam was involved in the publishing business throughout her life, interspersed with being a mother to her three children. Her first job was with Kiplinger Publishing. She later worked at a publishing house in Chicago.

After moving to New York, she was a weekly columnist for the Baldwinsville Messenger, and briefly published a weekly newsletter for the Radisson residential community.

In the north country, she was the restaurant critic for the Watertown Daily Times for nearly five years. After that, she published two books, one on food writing, the other on freelance writing.

She also worked at Jefferson Community College and the Jefferson County Department of Social Services, where she worked until her diagnosis.

Pam was diagnosed with dementia with Lewey bodies in 2014 and deteriorated steadily until her death. She remained under the care of her family until the end.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children: Megan and Eugene Berman, Dallas, Texas; Sarah Alires, Jersey City, N.J.; and Christopher Alires, Watertown.

She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Susan Merett and Joe Mysak, Brooklyn, and brothers James Merett and wife Beth Lucht of Madison Wisc., and Robert Merett and partner Bob Loughrey of Flower Mound, Texas.

She missed an introduction to her coming grandson, who will be born to daughter Megan in July.

Samantha Marie Curtis (Sami), age 18, of Brewer Road, Canton was surrounded by family when she peacefully passed away on Thursday May 18, while under the loving care of her mother, Karen, and Hospice.Sami was born November 11, 1998, to Ellis J. Curtis, Jr.(Jim) and the late Terri A. Sgroi Curtis, who passed away in 2002. Arrangements are entrusted to the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton.

Sami was a 2016 graduate of Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton, where she was class co-president and a member of the National Honor Society. She was a four year member of the girls’ basketball and soccer teams and participated in track as a senior.

Sami’s love for agriculture and teaching was evidenced by her extensive involvement in FFA at both the local and state levels. She also loved taking classes with Mrs. Wright and intended to pursue a degree in Agricultural Education at Cornell University.She held an internship at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Ag Studies Program working with St. Lawrence County high school seniors. Though she was unable to attend Cornell, Sami continued her education at SUNY Potsdam in the fall of 2016.

One of Sami’s greatest passions in life was her love for horses. In addition to spending countless hours riding her own horses, Sami trained therapy horses while she was receiving treatment in Vermont and was briefly employed at Honey Dew Acres. Sami also loved everything outdoors. She loved to hunt with her dad and brothers, fish with Uncle Duane and Uncle Alan and spend time at the Sugar Bush with Grandpa Ellis and Francis Hatch.

Sami was actively involved in the community. For fifteen years she participated in the Edward I. Moses Walk/Run for Life and served on the board of the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund since she was thirteen. Following her diagnosis, Sami held the “Help Sami Kick Cancer” event at Honey Dew Acres, which helped to raise over $60,000 for Cancer Patients in St. Lawrence County.

In 2016 Sami was presented with the NYS Senate Liberty Medal, the highest honor the Senate can bestow upon on individual, for her valor and selflessness. She also received recognition from Governor Cuomo for raising in excess of $100,000 for the SLC Cancer Fund in memory of her mother. On May 9,2017, the Senate again recognized her with the New York State Woman of Distinction award for her “profile in courage and a source of inspiration to the people of the North Country and the Empire State.”

Those who had the privilege of knowing Sami will always remember her unbridled passion for all that she did andher devotion to kindness, fairness, friendship and family. She had a larger than life personality, a smile that would warm your heart and a laugh that came from her toes.

Sami is survived by her parents, Jim and Karen Curtis, her sister, Ashley Knight; brothers,EJ Curtis III, Chris and Andrew Knight all of Canton; her grandparents, Charles Sgroi of Canastota, Helen Scott Curtis of South Colton, Gerald and Shirley Hourihan of Canton; many aunts, uncles and cousins, who she thought of as siblings. Samantha was especially close with her Aunt Kate, who thought of Sami as her own.

Besides her birth mother, Sami was predeceased by her grandparents, Ada Sgroi of Canastota and Ellis Curtis, Sr. of South Colton.

At Sami’s request there will be no calling hours. A celebration of her life will be held at Canton Central School High School gymnasium 99 State St. Canton on Sunday, May 21 from 4-7 PM. A Christian mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church Court St. Canton on Monday, May 22 at 11 AM with Rev. Douglas J. Lucia celebrating. A private burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Canton.

WEST CARTHAGE – William Joseph Scherer, 69, 1 Bridge St., died Wednesday morning, May 18th, 2017 after being stricken ill at home.

Born on April 8, 1948 in Watertown, the son of John J. and Anne C. Folgert Scherer, he attended and graduated from the Carthage Augustinian Academy.

He served a one year apprenticeship with the former Virkler Funeral Home in Lowville. He attended and graduated from the former Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse, before joining his father in the operation of the Scherer Funeral Home in West Carthage. He became Licensed Manager of the firm in 1975 and continued to own and operate the Funeral Home until he sold the business in April 2008 to Cullen D. Lundy of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. Following the sale, he continued to serve as the Manager of the Scherer Funeral Home portion of the business.

In September 2008, he began a career in retail sales, working in the Men’s Department of the Burlington Coat Factory in the Salmon Run Mall, Watertown.

On April 14, 1973, in the St. James Catholic Church, Carthage, he married Kay Suzanne Flynn. He was a longtime Lector and Eucharistic Minister of St. James, a Life Member and Past Exalted Ruler of the BPOE Lodge 1762, Carthage, a Benevolent Member of the West Carthage Fire Department, a member of the K of C Council 291, Carthage, a member of the Bishop Conroy General Assembly K of C (4th Degree) and a former member of the Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife, Kay, two daughters; Mrs. Jesse (Shannon) Lennox, Watertown, Erica L. Russell and her companion Joshua Stanford, Carthage, six grandchildren; Jordis, Taylar, Eva, Brent, Maive and Josalyn. Also surviving are his sister, Mrs. Douglas (Patricia A.) Fulcher of Mooresville, North Carolina, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, John Edward Scherer died before him.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd at 10:30 AM at the St. James Catholic Church, Carthage, with the Rev. Donald Robinson, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in New St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 22nd, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage.
