Veronica Amelio LaFontaine, 87, of 1355 Richards Drive, Watertown, NY, passed away peacefully at home, under Hospice care, on May 27th, 2017, surrounded by loving family members.
Calling hours will be held at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home in Watertown on Wednesday, May 31st at 632 State Street from 4pm to 7:30pm.
On Thursday June 1st, 12:15 pm, a prayer service will be held at the funeral home, followed by a 1:00 pm funeral Mass at Holy Family Church (where she was a communicant) officiated by Father Steven Murray and Deacon Edward R. Miller. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery, Watertown Center.
Mrs. LaFontaine was born Veronica Mary Tufo, Jan 14, 1930 in Watertown, daughter of Samuel and Louisa Tufo. She attended Clayton Schools, where, being an exceptional student, she skipped a grade. She graduated from Watertown High school in 1946, and worked a short time at Olga Knitting Mills. On May 21, 1950, she married Edward F. Amelio at St. Anthony’s Church, officiated by Father Milia. They started Amelio’s Sewing Center in 1958, running the business together until Edward passed away June 30th, 1973, after a long battle with cancer. Veronica and her eldest son, Frank, continued running the business until she retired in 1998--with Frank continuing to this day. In 1980 she married Alfred Y. (“Kermit”) LaFontaine at Holy Family Church, Monsignor McCarthy officiating. Alfred passed away on July 29th, 2011.
She is survived by four sons and two daughters in law: Frank and Jody Amelio, Patrick and Kim Amelio, Edward Amelio of Watertown, and Thomas Amelio of New York City. Also surviving are five stepchildren: Joanne Lafontaine, Clayton; Michele Mahon (husband Don) Watertown; Carmen Fuller (husband Bob), Watertown; Nanette Case (husband Brad), Pennsburg, PA, David LaFontaine, Baldwinsville; eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition, she is survived by one brother Sam Tufo (Wife Lois), Watertown; and two sisters: Dora Berkman, Alexandria Bay; and Joanne Jones (husband Walt), Forsythe, GA; and two sisters-in-law: Carrol Tufo, and Jenny Tufo. She was predeceased by two sisters: Edith Seymour, and Mary Neuroth; and two brothers: Bernard (Benny) Tufo and Jerry Tufo. Veronica enjoyed cooking, landscape and china painting, sewing, crocheting, traveling, and being with family.

Viola F. Mowers
Viola F. Mowers, 102, formerly of Philadelphia, NY, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, NY.
Born on December 15, 1914 in Roebuck, Ontario, Canada, she was a daughter of Elmer and Ethel Barton Buker and graduated from Philadelphia High School in 1934.
She married William M. Mowers on March 28, 1936 at the Theresa Methodist Parsonage with Rev. RU Grant, officiating. Mr. Mowers passed away January 26, 1998.
Mrs. Mowers was a telephone operator for several years at the local telephone office until the office went to dial, worked at J.J. Newberry, Watertown and the Indian River Central School cafeteria until retiring in June 1974. She also worked at the nutrition center in Philadelphia for the Jefferson County Office of the Aged from 1977 to 1991 retiring due to Mr. Mowers’ illness.
She was a member of the Philadelphia Rebekah Lodge #584 to which she was Past Noble Grand and Past District Deputy, Philadelphia United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Woman’s Society, Indian River Senior Citizens and the Senior citizens of Jefferson County, Watertown, NY.
Mrs. Mowers enjoyed summers at their camp in Clayton, NY. Her favorite past times were crossword puzzles, reading, playing cards, shopping, and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Jeffrey John Meeks, Albany, NY, Susan Andrea Farr and husband, Curtis, Watertown, NY and Julie Ann Ward, Watertown, NY; four great-granddaughters, Andrea N. McGrath, Allison M. McGrath, Chloe M. Ward and Julya J. Ward.
Her husband, her only daughter, Martha Meeks and two brothers, Arnold and Ernest Buker died before her.
Funeral Services will be 2 pm Monday, June 5, 2017 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY with Rev. Milton LaSalle, officiating. Burial will be at Sandy Hollow Cemetery, Philadelphia, NY, immediately following services.
Calling hours will be 12 – 2 pm prior to the service.

Terrance J. Lawler
Terrance J. Lawler, 70, of 21485 Reed Road, Watertown, passed May 30, 2017 at the Samaritan Medical Center surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born on September 29, 1946 in Lefargeville, son of William E. and Merle I Morse Lawler. He attended Sackets Harbor High School and then entered the US Marine Corps. on December 30, 1964. He was honorably discharged on April 1, 1968 as a Sergeant. He received two Purple Hearts, the Vietnam Service medal,the Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, the National Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Sharpshooter Badge.
Upon his discharge he moved to Florida and for a brief time worked for Alcoa before returning to Sackets Harbor where he held various jobs. He then enrolled in RIT earning a Bachelor’s Degree in 1974. During the course of his employment he worked for Jefferson County, The Thousand Island Bridge Authority, and for over 20 years he was the Director of Logistics at Fort Drum, where he retired from. Following his retirement in 2004 he started VETCO Contracting Services in Watertown, a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Business, up until he passed.
He married his loving and faithful wife, Wendie C. White on August 19, 1972 at Asbury Methodist Church in Watertown. They went on to have one child, Meghan Lea.
Mr. Lawler was a member of the Watertown Elks Lodge #496, Watertown American Legion and VFW.
Terry enjoyed cooking, reminiscing about old times, rides in the country, and giving people a hard time! Some of the best times of his life were when he was in the service, especially his time spent in Vietnam. His ultimate enjoyment was his time spent with his family, especially his 3 grandchildren. They were the most important people in his life, his pride and joy.
Among his survivors are his loving wife, Wendie C. Lawler, Watertown; his beloved daughter and son-in-law, Meghan and Leo Rogers, Watertown and his grandchildren, Travis (T-Man), Luke (El-Duko) and Madison (Madie-Ross) Rogers. He has six brothers and four sisters in law, Jim Lawler, Sackets Harbor, Michael and Yvonne Lawler, FL/Henderson Harbor, Neil Lawler, Sackets Harbor, William and Colleen Lawler, Dexter, Patrick and MaryJo Lawler, Rochester, Timothy and Crystal Lawler, Adams Center; four sisters and two brothers-in-law,Kathleen Maring, Watertown, Elaine and Butch Huttermann, Sackets Harbor, Judith and James Madill, Chaumont, Candace Lawler, Sackets Harbor; several nieces and nephews.
He is previously deceased by his sister and her husband, Anne and Ronnie Laseck, a brother Tommy, brother-in-law, Donald H. Maring, and Debbie Moculski.
Calling hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 3 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home 117 N. Massey St., Watertown. The funeral service will be held immediately following the calling hours at the funeral home.
A Celebration of Life will begin at 6 p.m. at the Barracks Inn in Sackets Harbor for family and friends.

RUSSELL - Alexis S. Thomas, a Russell native, of Charlestown, NH passed away on March 27, 2017 at the age of 96.

Alexis was born in Russell, NY in 1921 and married to Reverend Charles C. Thomas in 1944. The couple raised 3 wonderful daughters together and ministered to countless individuals and families over the years. Alexis was a woman of strong faith, an avid collector of antiques and a loving mother, grandmother and friend.
Ms. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Reverend Charles C. Thomas, and her daughters Deborah Thomas Chapman and Dorlo Thomas.
She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Thomas Smith, grandson, Eric Gribbon, granddaughters, Charity Mullins and Amber Vlangas and eight great grandchildren.

Frederick E. Brown
Turin- Frederick E. Brown, 66, of State Rt. 26, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, May 30, 2017.
He was born in Lowville, on October 20, 1950, a son of Earl and Fannie Hutchins Brown. Fred grew up in the Turin area, receiving his education at South Lewis Central School, later earning his GED. For over 40 years, until his retirement, in January, 2016, he was employed as a paper coating machine operator for Neenah Paper Co. (Formerly Fiber Mark D.S.I) of Lowville. On June 17, 1988, Fred married Cathy Post; the marriage ended in divorce.
Fred was a member of Abundant Life Fellowship Church, Boonville, where he was also baptized. For many years he found great pleasure and satisfaction in operating his woodshop, where he was very talented at manufacturing furniture.
Fred is survived by his daughter, Amanda L. Brown, Turin. Cathy and his daughter, Amanda and his son, Kyle, were the lights and love of his life. On November 18, 2013, Fred was predeceased by his beloved son, Kyle. Also surviving are brothers, Robert (Diane) Brown, Lyons Falls, Edward Brown, Turin; one sister, Shirley (Henry) Watts, LaFargeville. He was predeceased by a nephew, Robbie Brown.
His Funeral will be Friday at 4:00 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where Pastor Daniel Tabolt, of Abundant Life Fellowship Church, Boonville, will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Calling hours are Friday 2-4 P.M. at the funeral home. Joseph D. Fayette, 39, Carthage, passed away May 30th, 2017.

He is survived by a daughter Bayleigh Lashway, Carthage and a son to be born in June; two brothers, Steven (Tammy) Fayette, Boylston and Robert Fayette (Kellie Gooshaw), Watertown; his grandfather Doug Putnam, Cape Vincent; aunts and uncles Gary and Roger Fayette, Nancy Beecher, Christine Fayette Lawler, Sharon LaFave, Carolyn Swartout and David Seeley; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rodger F. James
Mr. Rodger F. James Sr., age 77 of Parishville, NY passed away on May 28, 2017 at the Highland Nursing Home in Massena after a two year battle with cancer.
He is survived by his two sons Rodger F. James Jr. and Trevor H. James of Parishville; his daughter Jody L. James of Parishville; his brother Robert James and his wife, Rebecca of Hannawa Falls; his sister Barbara Papayanakos of Syracuse; his Seven grandchildren Kel and Katie Cook; Cassandra, Alexis, Amberley, Aidan and Brianna James; his great grandson Grayson Cook and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Joan (Despaw) James to whom he was married for 47 years.
Rodger was born on April 28, 1940 in Potsdam, NY to the late Carson James and Charie (Trombley) James. He graduated from Potsdam Central High School in 1959 and later went on to Barber School in Syracuse receiving his certificate in 1961.
For several years he operated a barbershop on Water Street in Potsdam and then later opened his own barbershop in Parishville where he then moved. There he worked, raised his family and lived his remaining years. He worked as a driver for UPS, a school bus driver at Parishville-Hopkinton Central School and finally for the Town of Parishville Highway Department from which he retired in 1996. He was also an exempt member of the Parishville Volunteer Fire Department.
During his youth Rodger became very passionate of the outdoors and playing sports. He became a skilled hockey player; even playing in a few games with the Lake Placid Roamers after graduating high school. While in Syracuse he excelled at bowling and considered going professional. As years passed he continued bowling and took up playing horseshoes. It was only until recently that he sadly had to give them up.
His love for the outdoors came from his many years spent at Joe Indian Pond camping, fishing and hunting. He, along with a couple of close friends, started a hunting/fishing club at Joe Indian known as the “Upper Club”. It still is gong strong today.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 3pm at the Garner Funeral Home in Potsdam with Rev. Lee Sweeney as celebrant. Burial will follow the service at the Southville Cemetery. Friends may call June 5th from 1-3pm. Contributions can be made to the Parishville Volunteer Fire Department.
Donald F. Spencer
Donald F. Spencer, 84, of 7034 Texas Road, Croghan, died Thursday, June 1, 2017 at his home where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of Lewis County.
Donald was born May 8, 1933 in Carthage, the son of the late John and Agnes (Newman) Spencer. He served in the Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954. He married the former Marcia M. Dening on November 6, 1956 in Syracuse. Donald worked at Climax MFG and Fort Drum, 19 years at the former Adirondack Core & Plug in Carthage and finally operated the Gas Station for Mike’s Quick Stop in Carthage.
Donald loved hunting and was a member of the Big Twenty Hunting Club.
He was a life member of the BPOE Lodge # 1762 and the VFW Post # 7227, both of Carthage.
He is survived by his wife: Marcia M. Spencer of Croghan, two daughters and their husbands: Mrs. Larry (Dawn) Ostrom and Mrs. Mark (Michele) Rennie all of Black River, four sons and their wives: Mark and Vickie Spencer of West Carthage, Dale and Mary Spencer of Carthage, Jeffrey and Holly Spencer of Croghan and Donald and Tina Spencer of Henderson Harbor, 14 Grandchildren and 29 Great Grandchildren, a sister: Sally Jackson of New Bremen, a brother: James Spencer of Virginia Beach, VA and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a grandson, Travis Rushlow, two sisters, Veronica Sampson and Mary Vann and a brother, Jan Spencer.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at11:00 am on Wednesday, June 7 at Fairview Cemetery, Carthage with Rev. Nina Hutchinson officiating. Immediately following the burial there will be a Celebration of Life held at the Elks Lodge in Carthage. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.

Elizabeth M. (Noyes) Rushlow
CARTHAGE- Elizabeth Myrtle (Noyes) Rushlow 91, formerly of 655 South James Street in Carthage, died on June 1, 2017 at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for the last three years. She was born on July 6, 1925 in Antwerp, NY to the late Clyde Jessie & Myrtle Stella Typhair Noyes. She graduated from Antwerp High School. She married Gilbert Arthur Rushlow on July 6, 1943. Mr. Rushlow died on December 6, 1993.
She was a cook for the Fargo Inn; she also was a house cleaner and primarily a homemaker. She was a volunteer at the Jefferson County Election Office; she enjoyed baking, embroidery, bowling, BINGO and cards.
She is survived by several children, Jerry Rushlow, TN; Larry Rushlow, Carthage; Richard Rushlow, Carthage; Robert Rushlow, Carthage; Nancy (Ray) Campany, West Carthage; Genevieve (Lloyd) Rhone, Watertown; Dorothy (David) Moses, Carthage; and Rosemary Bauter, Natural Bridge. She is also survived by 20- grandchildren, 37-great- grandchildren, and 21-great-great- grandchildren.
She is pre-deceased by several siblings, Roy, Eugene, Patricia, Frank, Minnie, Betty, Cindy, and Priscilla and 1-grandchild, Travis Rushlow, and 1-great-great grandchild, Aubrey Barlow.
