William Romey

William Dowden Romey of East Orleans, MA passed away on Saturday the third of June. Bill was born October 26, 1930 in Richmond Indiana to William M. Romey and Grace (Dowden) Romey. He graduated summa cum laude from Indiana University. In 1955 he married Lucretia Leonard in Akron, OH. After three years in the navy, he entered graduate school in geology at U.C. Berkeley. After earning his Ph.D. he went on to a faculty position at Syracuse University followed by 20 years at St. Lawrence University. He was also the director of the Earth Science Curriculum Project in Boulder, CO for three years. He retired as a full professor from St. Lawrence University in 1990 and moved to East Orleans, MA where he continued an active life of writing and teaching. Bill spent many years as a shipboard lecturer travelling all over the world, notably for nine years in the Antarctic aboard The Explorer. His facility with languages enriched all aspects of his life; he was fluent in seven languages.

Bill was a prolific author and committed teacher. He wrote several popular books on science education that were required reading for teachers. He also wrote over 500 primary scientific articles on geology and geography that were published in journals such as Science and the Journal of Geological Education. He had a passion for popularizing science and wrote numerous articles published in newspapers, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He inspired a generation of students to expand their understanding of the world.

Bill leaves behind his sister, Sue DeWitt; his three children, Catherine (Cricket) Keener (Naples, FL), Gretchen Romey-Tanzer (Orleans, MA) and William L. Romey (Potsdam, NY); and seven grandchildren, John Tanzer, Alice Tanzer, Christina Keener, John Keener, William K. Romey, Max Romey, and Sage Romey.

GREENVILLE – Marie McCarroll, 92, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, June 3, 2017. Marie was born in Brooklyn on January 16, 1925, to Paul and Sadie Pizzo Martinelli. She was the second of five children. Marie married Edward A. McCarroll in November of 1951. Marie and Ed had two sons, Edward Patrick and Kevin Paul. After Ed Senior died in 1963, Marie raised her sons in Queens. They moved to Greenville in 1968. Marie worked at the former Mary’s Restaurant in Greenville for more than 20 years. She was an active member of Grapeville Baptist Church, where she was involved in many ministries. Her special ministry was with the students and teachers of Grapeville Christian School for 21 years, before retiring at age 91. Marie was a devoted wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma, friend and sibling. She will be missed.

Marie is survived by her two sons, Ed McCarroll (Pamela), and Kevin McCarroll (Denise); six grandchildren, Brenden McCarroll, Britni McCarroll, Brianne (Matthew) Lee, Nicholas (Alicia) McCarroll, Ashlee (Daniel) Jarrold, and Kelsee (Jon) Dees; seven great-grandchildren, Grant, Logan, Carter and Luke Jarrold, Seth, Kyle and Mila Dees; sister, Caterina Kunzeman; several nieces and nephews. Marie was predeceased by her parents, husband, and brothers, Anthony and Francis Martinelli.

Marie has been cremated privately. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at 11am at the Greenville Christian Life Center, State Route 32, Greenville. The funeral service for Joanne F. Derrigo will be 11:00am Tuesday, June 13th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Rev. Steven Murray officiating. Burial will follow the service in Glenwood Cemetery. Calling hours will be 4-8:00pm Monday, June 12th at the funeral home.

Joanne passed away Thursday, June 8th at Country Manor Nursing Home. She was 86 years old.

Born in Lowville April 1, 1931 Joanne was a daughter to Robert and Helen (Hojohn) Artz. She was educated locally. On May 15, 1949, she married Frank J. Derrigo, Sr. at St. Anthony’s Church with the Rev. Albert R. Plante officiating.

Joanne and Frank owned and operated Frank’s Fruit Stand from 1967-1999. She enjoyed gardening, dancing, and spending time with her family.

Surviving are her children, John R. and wife Sandy., Robert A. and companion Lorraine Sorrell., Frank J., Helen and husband William Nielson; an adopted daughter, Jane (Donald) Ames; a sister, Emily Habeeb; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and a large, extended family.

Besides her husband she is predeceased by 3 siblings, Richard and Robert Artz and Carol Taylor.

Theodora J. Valianos

Theodora J. Valianos, 99, of Centennial Apartments, passed away June 9, 2017, at Hospice of Jefferson County at the Ellis Farm.

Mrs. Valianos was born November 10, 1917, in Lixouri, Kephalonia, Greece, daughter of James and Andrea Sabramis. She attended schools and married Jerry Valianos in Greece before coming to the United States in 1937. Mr. Valianos died in 1967. Mrs. Valianos was a homemaker and a member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church. As a member of St Vasilios she was also a member of St. Ann’s Society and a volunteer for the church’s semiannual bake sale.

Surviving are two sons, Christopher (Aileen), Atlanta, GA, James (Rae), Watertown, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. A daughter, Angelina Kosboth, a sister Eugena Sabramis, a granddaughter Carol Anne Reno, all died before her.

A private funeral service and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. Ida M. Aubin, 87, of 29637 NYS Route 12 Watertown died Thursday, June 8th at her home.

Born Ida M. Salisbury July 6, 1929 in Watertown, she was the foster daughter of the late George and Mae Haley. Ida attended Watertown schools and was an honor student. She was employed at the Olga Knitting Mill as a seamstress after high school.

She married the love of her life, Alcid D. Aubin, on August 23, 1947 at Holy Family Church with Msgr. William J. Argy, officiating.

Ida was a devoted wife and mother and was an excellent homemaker. She enjoyed caring for her husband and family. Family get-togethers with her large family meant a great deal to her. Her gentle smile and enthusiasm for good conversation will be deeply missed by many. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, knitting, crossword puzzles, and Jeopardy. Ida was a communicant of St. James Church in Carthage and was devoted to her faith.

Surviving are her seven children and their spouses: Gary (Roberta) of Copenhagen, Timothy (Sheila) of Bradenton, FL, David (Pamela) of Watertown, Daniel (Joanie) of Black River, Paul (Janet) of Copenhagen, Sandra Jones (Peter) of Copenhagen, and Lori Snyder (Jeff) of Copenhagen. Ida was the grandmother to nineteen grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and a great great granddaughter. She is also survived by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leo and Irene Aubin of Pensacola, FL, and three sisters-in-law Rita Gracey of Calcium, Claire Haggerty of Bristol, TN, and Lois Aubin of Copenhagen. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

The funeral mass will be 11:00am Monday, June 12 at St. James Church, Carthage. Burial will follow the service in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Copenhagen. Calling hours will be from 5-8:00pm Sunday, June 12 at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to a charity of one’s choice.

NORWOOD — Funeral services for Wendell D. Barkley, 84, of Norwood will be held Monday, June 12, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Buck Funeral Home, Norwood with Rev. Lee Sweeney, officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Bixby Cemetery, Norfolk. A reception will follow committal at the Norfolk American Legion.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at the Buck Funeral Home, 7 Park Street, Norwood, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 USH 11; Potsdam, New York 13676.

Wendell is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Jean of Norwood; by a son, Stephen (Robin) Barkley of Norfolk and by daughter-in-law, Dawne Barkley of Madrid; by grandchildren, Amanda Burns and Brandon and Blake Barkley, Michael O’Neil, Megan Poste, Lindsay Barkley and Logan Barkley and by 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Weldon (Barbara) Barkley and Wayne (Barbara Bough) Barkley, as well as by nieces and nephews.

A son, Stuart Barkley and a sister, Beverly Scott, pre-deceased him.

Wendell was born, May 1, 1933 in Wilmington, New York, the son of the late Wilbur and Blanche (Dignean) Barkley. He attended high school till the 10th grade, when he enlisted in the US Navy. Following his service, Wendell married Jean Daggette on October 19, 1957 at the Norfolk Methodist Church with Rev. Ernest Drappa, officiating. Wendell worked for the New York Telephone Company and Norwood Plumbing, prior to being employed by General Motors as an electrician, retiring in 1988 after 32 years.

Wendell enjoyed hunting, he was a member of the Raripaco Hunting Club and the Norfolk American Legion, he was a 55 year member of the Free and Accepted Mason’s of Norwood and he loved Old Western Movies.

Vivian L. Shortsleeve, 95, of Watertown passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Lewis County General Hospital’s Nursing Home.

Services will be at the convenience of her family and arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.

Vivian was born in Watertown on February 23, 1922, daughter of Lloyd G. and Rose B. Widrick Taylor and she was a graduate of Watertown High School. She married Walter A. Shortsleeve on October 23, 1948 in the rectory at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. J. A. Franceour presiding. Mr. Shortsleeve died March 11, 2012. She worked for ten years as an operator for NY Telephone Co. and was a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church.

She is survived by her four children, Frances L. Cox, Clearwater, FL, David J. and Anne Shortsleeve, Watertown, Paul J. and Dawn Shortsleeve, Glen Park, and Donna M. Shortsleeve, Castlerock, CO; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her sister, Alma MacDougal, died before her.

Dale C. Hutchinson

Born April 10, 1938 to Claude and Lucy Hutchinson, in Watertown, New York, died peacefully at home on Thursday May 25, 2017. For the past 22 years, Dale resided with his beloved wife Daryl, of 61 years, in Centreville, Virginia.

Dale is survived by his son Randy (Maggie), daughters Sherri and Martha Siler; four grandchildren, Charity Wood (James), Misty Nielson (Andrew), Keith Palka (Jasmine), Joshua Siler; eight great grandchildren, a brother Dean, a nephew and niece and cousins. Dale was preceded in death by his brother, Daniel, his daughter Betsy Lopez, his grandson Jacob Hutchinson, and his great-grandson, Isaac Nielson.

On June 1, 2002, Dale retired from BAE Systems as an Executive Vice President and General Manager. Prior to BAE Systems, he was President of Lockheed Martin Federal Systems Company in Manassas, VA for three years. Dale also served as a Vice President with Unisys Government Systems. He began his career in 1959 with IBM, where he retired after 31 years of service. Prior to beginning his career at IBM, Dale served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service.

Dale’s life was celebrated at his church, The Oakton United Methodist on Saturday, June 3rd at 11:00am. Interment will be private and at a later date in Evans Mills, New York.

A graveside service for Bryan Todd Klempa, who unexpectedly passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 in Sarasota, Fl, will be held at 1:00 pm on Wed., June 14, 2017 at a family plot in the Hailesboro Cemetery, Hailesboro, NY.

Bryan was born in Ithaca, NY on October 22, 1971. He is survived by his brother Matthew Klempa, grandmother Virginia Pascoe, mother and stepfather Linda and Kevin O’Brien, father and stepmother Stephen and Lisa Klempa, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bryan graduated from Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY in 1993 with an Engineering Degree. Bryan took pride in his profession and worked as a Project Manager in numerous locations throughout the East Coast.

REDFIELD — Family and friends will gather at the Redfield Fire House (4879 Co. Rt. 17, Redfield, N.Y.) at 11 a.m. on Sunday June 18th to celebrate and remember the extraordinary lives of Henry and Helen Johnston who both passed away on March 23, 2017

Please come and share your memories and say farewell to these two remarkable individuals. Though they are no longer with us, they will remain in our thoughts and hearts forever.

Carl Donald Foster, 80, of 110B Joseph Lonsway Dr., Clayton passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born May 26, 1937 in Watertown, son of Carl E. and Fern Hibbard Foster.

On July 31, 1958 he married Kay Lucile Putman at St. Lawrence Methodist Church, town of Cape Vincent.

Carl was employed by Knowlton Brothers Specialty Paper, Watertown as a paper maker for 43 years. He was a member of the Depauville Fire Department, a member of its Fagowi Club, and volunteered as fire commissioner for five years. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his time at the Hank Zimmer Camp in Forest Port, Boonville.

Carl is survived by his wife, Kay; four children, Cheryl Bartlett and husband, Randy, Watertown, Linda Becker, Clayton, Mary Foster Schawlm and husband, Peter, New Hope, PA, and Todd Foster and wife, Jill, Clayton; five grandchildren, Sarah K. Bartlett, Richard M. Becker, Anthony James Becker, Cory Hansen Foster, and Faith Ann Foster; sister, Jean Gardner and husband, Wilbert, Depauville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Richard Carl Foster, daughter, Nancy Hibbard, grandson, Colin Foster Bartlett, and sister, Shirley Burkhard.

His wit, wisdom, and work ethic were a strong example to all, and he still knew nothing. Carl’s wishes were no services and a private memorial will be held at the family’s convenience. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton.

Betty J. Heath, 80, of Great Bend, died Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.

Betty was born May 20, 1937 at home in West Carthage, the daughter of the late John G. and Hazel (Belile) Fahsel. She was a 1955 graduate of Carthage Central and a 1959 graduate of Potsdam State University. Betty began her long teaching career in Lowville and Hyde Park, NY before her marriage. She married Fred S. Heath on December 27, 1966 at the Woolworth Memorial United Methodist Church in Great Bend. Fred died on February 27, 1992. Betty taught for more than 30 years for the Carthage Central School District, primarily as a 4th grade teacher.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, casinos and traveling, especially when her husband was alive.

Betty was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Assoc., National Home Garden Club, NYSUT and former member of the Great Bend Fireman’s Auxiliary.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband: LeAnn and Randy Garrow of Hammond; her grandson, Christopher Sharp of Great Bend, a niece, Mrs. Kim (Mark) Cowan of Pulaski; 2 nephews, Mr. Steven (Jessica) Fahsel of Brewer, ME and Mr. Jeffrey (Lisa) Fahsel of San Mateo, CA and several great nieces and nephews. A brother, Richard J. Fahsel, died on March 5, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 13 at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage with Rev. Tracy Cook and Rev. Warren Fargo officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Carthage. There will be a calling hour preceding the funeral service from 12:00pm -1:00pm.

MORRISTOWN- A Celebration of Life for Elaine J. Beggs, 65, of Morristown will be held on Wednesday June 14, 2017 at the Morristown Fire Hall at 4 p.m. In keeping with Elaine’s wishes there will be no public calling hours. Mrs. Beggs died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 11, 2017 at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.

Arrangements are under the direction of LaRue & Pitcher Funeral Home, Ogdensburg.

Elaine J. Beggs was born on August 21, 1951 in Potsdam, NY, she was the daughter of Richard and Anna (Gotham) Coffey. She was a graduate of Canton High School. On July 16, 1983 she married Maxwell R. Beggs at the Presbyterian Stone Church in Morristown. She worked as a Social Welfare Examiner for the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services until her retirement. Her greatest love and joy in life was her family, especially her grandchildren.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Max Beggs, her daughter Jessica Montroy and her surrogate daughters; Lisa Newby of Morristown and Akiko Kumagai of Tokyo, Japan. She is survived by her mother; Anna Coffey and her brothers; Steve Coffey and his wife Elizabeth of Indian River, MI and Jeffrey Coffey and his wife Tracy of Pyrites, NY. Two sisters also survive her; Cheryl Robinson and her husband Michael of Canton and Jacqueline Brooks and her husband Tim of Waddington. She is survived by three favorite grandchildren; Carson Beggs and Liberty and Alaina Montroy.

She was predeceased by her father; Richard Coffey, her son-in-law; Spencer Montroy and her niece, Mackenzie Tiernan.

JoAnn Croyle

JoAnn Croyle, 72 of 421 Cross St., formerly of Gettysburg, PA passed away peacefully at the Hospice of Jefferson County Residence on Gotham St, Watertown on Saturday, June 10, 2017

JoAnn was born in Sebring, Florida on September 30, 1944, the daughter of Jack and Ann Boyanski Croyle. Following her father’s Army service, the family returned to the north country and settled in Sackets Harbor, later relocating to Adams Center. JoAnn attended school in Sackets Harbor, Adams Center and then Immaculate Heart Academy in Watertown.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph Community in Watertown in 1960 and earned her high school diploma from IHA while in the novitiate in Ogdensburg, NY. JoAnn continued her education at Mater Dei College in Ogdensburg receiving her final profession in June 1966 when she was given the name of Sister Theophane. In later years, the Sisters were allowed to revert to their given name and she was then known as Sister JoAnn Croyle. She received a BS Ed in reading from SUNY Potsdam and completed her education at Nazareth College in Rochester where she earned her Masters Degree in Education for elementary grades. She taught at St. Josephs, Massena 1963-65 and 1971-73; St. Agnes, Lake Placid 1965-68; St. Mary’s, Ticonderoga 1968-69; Holy Family, Watertown 1969-70 and 77-79; Holy Name, Tupper Lake 1970-71; St. Augustines, Peru, NY 1973-77 where she was Sister Superior and teacher; St. James Gouverneur, 1979-85; Trinity Catholic, Massena 1985-88 where she was Sister Superior and teacher.

After a retreat at Ain Karim in Fairfield, PA, JoAnn received an Indult of Secularization in 1991 and left the religious community. She relocated to Gettysburg where she taught at St. Francis Xavier School, was a student advocate after her retirement and also employed by Dobbin House in the Gift Shop.

JoAnn was an accomplished pianist, artist, cook and enjoyed all types of crafts. She loved all of God’s creations especially animals.

JoAnn is survived by one sister Gloria Peluso, Watertown; a nephew Ken Oatridge and grand nephew Sawyer Oatridge of Carthage; a niece Patricia Oatridge, Adams; one aunt Ann Boyanski of Dexter and several cousins.

Arrangements are with the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, 117 N. Massey St., Watertown, NY. At JoAnn’s request, there will be no calling hours and a funeral mass will be said at the convenience of the family.

The family expresses their deepest appreciation for the care JoAnn received over the past year at The Hospice Residence where she was treated with the utmost respect and allowed to pass peacefully on her own terms.
