Edward J. Keleher

Mr. Edward J. Keleher, age 40 of Potsdam, NY died June 10th at the Canton Potsdam Hospital after injuries sustained in an ATV accident. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 15th at 11 am with Rev. Lee Sweeney celebrant. Burial will follow the service at West Stockholm Cemetery. Eddie was born on June 29, 1976 in Potsdam, NY to Steven and Patricia “Patti” Keleher. He was a 1994 graduate of Potsdam Central High School. He worked for Roto Rooter for many years and currently was a custodian at Clarkson University. Eddie was an avid sports fan. He loved the New York Rangers and Yankees and the Philadelphia Eagles. He also was very active. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing, playing softball and spending time at the family hunting camp.

Eddie is survived by his wife Lindsay Keleher; parents Steve and Patti Keleher; sons Trevor and Jacob Keleher and Chase Bergquist; brother Timothy Keleher and his fiancée Melinda Oney; paternal grandparents Hilda and Frank Keleher; nephew Mathew Keleher and niece Megan Oney and step children Kyler Capone, Courtney Currier and Mackenna Martin. He is predeceased by his first wife Sheri Keleher and his maternal grandparents Gerald and Grace Curtis.

Kay Dawson 82, Watertown passed away on June 9, 2017. She was born in Watertown on June 9th 1935 to William English and Catherine “Kitty” Dwyer. Kay graduated from Watertown High School and attended CCBI in Syracuse, NY.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, June 16th at 1:00 pm at Holy Family Church, Watertown.

She worked in the Real Estate and Insurance fields for many years and provided home health care until she retired. She was an active auxiliary member of American Legion Post 61 and VFW Post 1400. She also attended Holy Family Catholic Church.

Kay was married to Richard Dawson in 1957 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She is survived by Richard Dawson Jr., Amy and Steve Brothers and their children Brooke and Alexis, two Great Grandchildren Alyssa Rose, Mariah Kay, Julie and Danny Suarez and their children Connor, Sean, Alejandro and Susanna. A brother in law David and Suzanne Dawson, Middletown, NJ. and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded by a daughter Catherine Dawson.

She was extremely proud to be completely of Irish descent. Her children and grandchildren will always remember her as the Good Samaritan. She was always trying to find ways to help those in need and had compassion for those suffering in their daily lives. Her faith in God was extremely strong.

Vergil O. Smith

Vergil Octavious Smith, 48, of Massena, New York unexpectedly passed away on June 8, 2017, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 16, 2017 St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow the funeral service at St. Lawrence Parish Cemetery.

Vergil was born in Massena, NY on June 27th 1968 becoming the 8th child of Donald F. and Jane E. Smith. He attended Massena Central High and graduated from North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia. Vergil continued his education in the Army where he was stationed in Germany. Vergil served for 4 years and was honorably discharged.

Vergil most recently worked as a Foreman at B & W Paving & Landscaping located in Waterford, Connecticut. Prior to moving to Connecticut, Vergil established his career in the construction industry working his way up to Foreman at Reeves Ditching & Contracting where he and his crews built industrial-sized piping infrastructure for the City of Atlanta. Vergil enjoyed all outdoor activities including golf and fishing.

Vergil is survived by his daughter, Dishan Smith and her husband Trent Townsend, as well as his father Donald F. Smith. He also leaves behind many siblings; Valerie Smith, Victor Smith, Vincent Smith, Vernon & Kim Smith, Varick & Nancee Smith and Veronica & Sterling McClain. Vergil’s family also includes many nieces and nephews located across the country.

Vergil is preceded in death by his mother, Jane E. Smith and his brother, Vance Smith.

Vergil will be deeply missed by family and his many friends. Now he rests in peace alongside Jane and Vance, looking over us as we continue on our journeys in life.

WATERTOWN – Cheryl Ann Vallencour, 60, 803 Holcomb St., died Saturday evening, June 10, 2017 at the Samaritan Medical Center, where she had been a patient for a brief time.

Born in West Carthage on May 13, 1957, the daughter of Frederick E. & Barbara Kilbourn Vallencour. She had worked with the Day Habilitation Workshop at the Jefferson Rehabilitation Center in Watertown. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the SPCA. Often, she would be found after lunch, in the back of the VanDuzee DayHab, having her own karaoke concert.

Cheryl enjoyed taking part in several activities, such as dances at the DPAO, bowling, apple picking in Mexico, NY, going on Uncle Sam’s Boat Tours in Alexandria Bay and participating in fashion shows and the Special Olympics. She also loved to go to the zoo and the circus. She has attended the Mayor’s Ball in Watertown and was well traveled having visited places such as Walt Disney World in Florida, Nashville, Tennessee, and the Rock and the Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

She is survived by her siblings; Deborah (Dennis) Seubert, Kit (Spike) Purington, Nannette (James) Rounds, Bruce (Jean) Rounds and Floyd (Carol) Reader. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, an aunt and uncle, cousins and her dear friends at Holcomb St..

Her family would like to extend thanks to the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit and the 4 Pavilion Staff at Samaritan Medical Center. Special thanks to Dr. Rory Sears and the IRA 11 Staff at Holcomb St., for their care and compassion.

A funeral service for Ms. Vallencour will be held on Friday, June 16th at 1:00 PM at the United Community Church, Carthage, with the Rev. Jane Wagner, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Harrisville Cemetery at the family’s convenience. Arrangements are with the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Carthage. Lawrence Elmer “Larry” White passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2017 at the age of 85. Born in Cape Vincent, NY, he was a long time resident of Waldwick, NJ. Before retiring Larry was a Chemical Engineer with El Paso Products Company in Odessa, TX. He was a member of St. Luke’s Church in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, where he was an usher, a Scout Master for the Waldwick and Ho-Ho-Kus Boy Scout Troop #232, a member of the Waldwick Volunteer Ambulance Corp. as an EMT, driver and Treasurer. Larry was an active member of the Waldwick Pistol and Rifle Club, a charter member of the Waldwick Knights of Columbus #5257, a member of the N.J. State First Aid Council and Secretary of both the 20th District and the S. Carol White EMS Academy. He loved dogs especially his Bichon Frise, Snowy. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Mary A., two sons: Wayne A. White, his wife Nancy; Bruce M. White, his wife Vikki; and daughter Cynthia A. Whiting, her husband Ron; four grandchildren: Ian, Cory, Brianna, Melinda; a sister Elizabeth Leger and two brothers: Phillip White, his wife Barbara; Harley White and his wife Marci. He is predeceased by his parents Elmer J. and Katherine A. White and brother in law Joseph Leger. Visitation was held on Friday, May 19, 2017 from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s Church, 340 Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ. with the funeral mass commencing at 2 pm. Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Larry’s memory may be made to the Clarkson University Scholarship Fund, 8 Clarkson Ave., Potsdam, NY 13699. John S. Carnes

John Stewart Carnes, 70, of Lacona, NY passed away Monday, June 12, 2017, from complications of Parkinson’s illness.

John was born on Aug.. 28, 1946, the son of John H. Carnes and Rita S. Carnes of Pulaski, NY. He is survived by his wife, Debra L. Carnes of Lacona; mother, Rita, of Pulaski; two sons and a daughter, John D. Carnes

(Martha) of Pulaski, Thomas P. Carnes (Melissa) of Pulaski and Katherine LaGray (Karl) of Pulaski; 10 grandchildren - Cassidy, Kayla, Mary, John, Eileen, Shannon, Peter, Taylor, Andrew and Parker; a sister and brother,

Margaret Carnes (Charles Aldinger), and James Carnes (Celeste). John was predeceased by a son, Andrew P. Carnes, and his father.

Calling hours will be June 14 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Summerville Funeral Home in Sandy Creek, NY.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at Unity Acres in Orwell, NY on June 15 at 11:00 a.m. with reception to follow.

Louise G. Foster, age 84 of Potsdam, NY passed away on June 12th at her residence while under the care of her family and Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley. Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 16th at noon with Rev. Stephen Rocker celebrant. Burial will follow the service at Fairview Cemetery in Parishville, NY. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Service on Friday from 10 am until the time of the service. Contributions in her memory can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.

Louise is survived by sons Richard (Donna) Foster of Potsdam; Scott (Tonya) Foster of Potsdam; Joseph Foster and his fiancée Rae Collins of Massena; daughters Diane (Steve) Ling of West Palm Beach, FL; Dorothy (James) Brown of Ogdensburg and Donna Jarvis of Ogdensburg; sister in law Shirley Long; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephew. She is predeceased by her husband Richard D. Foster; parents and her three brothers William, Edward and Henry Long.

Louise was born on November 6, 1932 in Portland, CT to the late William Long and Louise Schmidl Long. She was a graduate of Portland High School in 1951. In 1957 in East Hampton, CT she was married to Richard Foster. They lived all over the country as Mr. Foster served in the Armed Forces for years. They ended up settling in Potsdam, NY where they raised their family. They moved to West Palm Beach for a while. Louise moved back north after Richard passed.

She enjoyed bingo, going to the casino, crocheting, watching the grandkids and just socializing with everyone.


Betty M. Gutierrez

Betty Mae Gutierrez, 79, formerly of Halls Corners Road, Philadelphia, passed away Friday, June 9, 2017 in Alexandria, Virginia, where she had resided since January 2016.

The daughter of Alton and Carrie McCrea, Betty was born on April 12, 1938 in Canton, New York, and raised on dairy farms in St. Lawrence Country before graduating from Antwerp High School in 1956.

On August 18,1956, at the First Methodist of Gouverneur with the Rev. William Wood presiding, Betty married Royal F. Gutierrez, son of Joshua and Ruby Gutierrez of Philadelphia. Betty and Royal were married for 58 years until Royal’s passing in 2014. Betty is survived by their four children, Debbie McKenzie and husband Kenny of Philadelphia, NY, Mark Gutierrez and wife Sandy of Antwerp, NY, Brad Gutierrez and wife Beth of Alexandria, VA, and Deanne Widrick and husband Tim, of Merritt Island, FL. Betty is also survived by six grandchildren and step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, a sister, Addie Cooper of Antwerp, NY, a brother, Terry McCrea, Palm Bay, FL, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was pre-deceased by two brothers, Walter and Efton McCrea, Gouverneur, NY, and a sister, Martha Smith, Barboursville, VA.

Betty was well known in the Philadelphia area for the bakery business she operated out of her home during the 60’s and 70’s, providing baked goods for local restaurants and stores, as well as wedding cakes for many area weddings. For many years, until disabling health crises forced her retirement in 1994, Betty worked in Philadelphia and Watertown for the Jefferson National Bank, formerly Bank of Philadelphia. In retirement, Betty was an active volunteer at local senior citizen facilities, and continued to provide her treasured baked goods to the local community.

For many years Betty was an active member of The Grange in Antwerp, an avid bowler in local leagues, and a frequent presence at local area music venues supporting her husband’s country music career. She also enjoyed gardening and needlework.

Scott E. Purcell, 58, of Watertown and formerly of Clayton, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Samaritan Medical Center.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., 320 John St., Clayton on Friday, June 16, from 6 - 8PM. The funeral service will be at the funeral home on Saturday, June 17, at 1PM with Pastor Donald Briant presiding followed by burial in Clayton Cemetery.

Scott was born in Alexandria Bay on May 12, 1959, son of the late Robert E. and B. Virginia Scott Purcell. He received his IEP. Diploma from Watertown High School in 1980. He performed custodial work at Ft. Drum and at Production Unlimited. He additionally worked at JRC Recycling Center.

Scott was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, WPBS public auction, Children’s Miracle Network, and Meals on Wheels. Highlights of his life included his janitorial crew at Ft. Drum receiving the NISH Award and his participation in Special Olympics where he won many medals in track and swimming. He was an avid fan of the NY Yankees, Buffalo Bills, and Syracuse Orangemen; also enjoying vacations, music, swimming, and dancing. Known by many, he had a smile that could light up a room.

He is survived by his brother, Robert E. Purcell, Jamesville; five sisters, Judy L. Haberer and husband, Raymond Arcade, Karen S. Amico and husband, Ross, Victor, Lou Ann Clark and husband, Guy, Gunns Corners, Lynette E. Knapp and husband, David, Ontario, and Elysia M. “Tish” Purcell, Churchville; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Scott’s family wants to express their deep gratitude to the Jefferson Rehabilitation Center. The compassion, love, and attention Scott received from the staff at his JRC homes on Massey St. and Gaffney Dr. will forever be appreciated. Lyle A. Vandenburg

WATERTOWN-Lyle A. Vandenburg, 90 of Watertown passed away Monday, June 5, 2017 at the Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.

He was born September 13, 1926 in Potsdam, NY, the son of Charles and Hilda (Fallon) Vandenburg.

Early on in his life, Lyle worked on the family farm and for his brother, Morris at his gas station. In the mid 1950’s he was hired at Potsdam Central Schools as a bus driver for 15 years. Lyle then went on work at SUNY Canton until retirement.

Lyle enjoyed arts and crafts, wood burning and metal engraving. After retirement he bought and sold antiques with his wife, Lila.

He is predeceased by his parents; his wife Lila, who passed away in 2013 and one brother, Morris Vandenburg who died in 1972.

Survivors include, his son, David Vandenburg and Paula of Watertown; four grandchildren, Krista Vandenburg, Olivia Vandenburg, Sarah Vandenburg and Charlie Ann Vandenburg. He is also survived by one great grandchild, Abriella LaBaff.

A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Hillcrest Cemetery in Parishville, New York.

Robert E. Fallows

Robert E. Fallows, 78 of Lacona, passed away Sunday June 11, 2017.

Mr. Fallows was born September 18, 1938 in Woonsocket, RI to Robert and Helen (Wenisch) Fallows. He graduated from Webster High School in 1956. Mr. Fallows served in the United States Navy from 1956-1962. He married Barbara MacBride August 12, 1961 in Webster, NY.

Mr. Fallows worked as a Route Salesman for Frito Lay, retiring after 30 years.

Surviving besides his wife Barbara are Kim (Scott) Wolff, Scott (Sophie) Fallows, Matt (Jessica) Fallows, Jeff (Crystal) Fallows; 8 grandchildren, Josh, Kyle, Emilie, Sam, Madeline, Allison, Raegan and Ella.

Calling Hours will be held Friday, June 16, 2017 from 1-3pm and the Funeral Service at 3pm at Summerville Funeral Home, Sandy Creek. Burial will follow at Boylston-Sandy Creek Cemetery.

LaFargeville; Mr. Thomas J. Dodge, 39, of Waterford, Michigan, formerly of LaFargeville, died June 9th, from cancer at the University of Michigan Hospital surrounded by his family. There will be no services.

He was born May 25th, 1978, in Alexandria Bay, the son of Robert and Cynthia Dodge.

Tom graduated in 1996 from Thousand Islands High School. He received a Bachelors Degree in Applied Science and Technology, and a Master of Business Administration and Business Management, from Almeda University.

He served 3 years with the United States Navy, where he received several awards and was honorably discharged.

At the time of his death, Tom worked for Vanerbilt Remarketing Mortgage Company for 15 years out of Maryville, TN. He lived in Michigan for the last 11 years.

Tom was an avid gun collector and belonged to Oakland County Sportsman’s Club. He was a comedian and the life of every party, and he especially loved spending time with his daughters, family, and friends.

Tom is survived by his daughters, Eliza and Raeyln, of Michigan; his companion Crystal Davidson of MI.; his parents, Robert and Cynthia Dodge of LaFargeville; one brother, Travis (Bridgette) of LaFargeville; a nephew Dalton of LaFargeville; his grandfather Reginald Hendrick of DeKalb Junction; several Aunts, Uncles, and cousins. A marriage ended in divorce.

C. Ardeth VanNest

LOWVILLE – C. Ardeth VanNest, 86, of the West Road, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017, at Lewis County General Hospital.

Ardeth was born on the family homestead on the Woodbattle Road in Copenhagen on March 5, 1931, a daughter of the late Ira O. and Glenora Hutchinson Larkins where she attended a one-room school house on the Keener Hill Road. She was married to Robert J. VanNest on May 11, 1948, and together they raised their children on the West Road in West Lowville. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before Bob’s death on July 8, 2010.

In her younger years, Ardeth worked at Greystone Manor and cleaned houses locally. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking, baking and spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving Ardeth are her five daughters and their spouses: Linda and Howard Zehr of Castorland, Arlene and Edward Yancey of Lowville, Cathryn and Kenneth Hosmer also of Lowville, Virginia and Karl Roggie of Carthage and Roda and Burnell Lyndaker of Bellwood; 19 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren; her sister, Beatrice Bumbaco of CT; her sister-in-law, Lucy Larkins of Copenhagen; several nieces and nephews; half-sisters, Bertha and (Lynn) Turner; and Frances Briggs; half-brothers, Albert and Leona; and Raymond and Elizabeth Larkins.

She was predeceased by her unborn infant, and her infant daughter, Maryann, her brother Robert O. Larkins, half-brothers, Franklin and Amasa, half-sisters, Ann LaBrake and Patsy LaVancha.

Family and friends may call on Thursday, June 15, 2017, from 4-7 p.m. at the Sundquist Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be on Friday the 16th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Brian Siegrist, officiating. Burial will be in the Gardener’s Corner’s Cemetery.

The funeral for Mark A. Burtick will be 6:00pm Friday, June 16th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Rev. Steven Murray officiating. Burial will be held at a date and time convenient to his family. Calling hours will precede the service at the funeral home beginning at 4:00pm.

Mark passed away Monday, June 12th. He was 59 years old.

Born June 1, 1958 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he was a son to Metro and Elizabeth (Ball) Burtick. After graduating high school Mark attended SUNY Canton, and then Jefferson Community College, where he obtained an associate’s degree in Accounting. He was employed by Samaritan Medical Center working in the Accounts Payable Department.

Mark was a member of the Watertown Elks Lodge, and the Time Warp Bocce team. He enjoyed rooting for the New York Yankees, Giants, Rangers, and Syracuse athletics. He also enjoyed music.

Mark loved his grandchildren. More than anything, however, he loved his two sons.

A marriage to Mary Middlestate would end in divorce.

Surviving are his children: Mark and Andrea Burtick of Cheektowaga, Nicholas J. “Nick” (fiancée Danielle Rayeski) Burtick of Orchard Park; 3 siblings: Dennis (Bobbi) Burtick of Athens, GA, Paul Burtick of Watertown, Donald (Yvonne) Burtick of Oswego; 3 grandchildren: Joseph William Burtick, Emily Jane Burtick, Michael Ray Mitchell; and 2 nephews.

Mark is also survived by his loyal friends and family at the Time Warp Tavern.

Genevieve Simmons, 97, passed away on June 13, 2017 at the Country Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Carthage, N.Y. She was born on December 7, 1919 in Chadwicks, N.Y., a daughter of the late Norman and Dora Cook Porter and received her education in local schools.

Genevieve was united in marriage with Philip Simmons in 1938 in St. George’s Episcopal Church in Chadwicks. George passed away in 1997.

She is survived by her son; Bruce Simmons of Evans Mills, her granddaughter; Wendy Simmons-Parker and Mike Parker and her great-grandson; Trey Zehr of Evans Mills.

She was predeceased by her daughter in law; Nancy Simmons, her brother; John M. Porter II, her sister; Helen P. Andrews and twin sister; Katherine Monnett.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St. Sauquoit.

She is survived by: Son: David Ormsbee and fiancé Rachael Rice; Father and Stepmother: David and Fran Powelczyk; Sister: Sheryl (Ken) Hugh; Nephew: Chad (Nicole) Gerould; Great Nieces: Katelyn, Erica and Emily Gerould; Niece: Leah Burns (Steve Talarico); Great Nephew: Micah Talarico, Great Niece: Brynn Talarico; Sister: Teresa Smith; Nephews: Jeffrey (Caitlyn) Smith, Brian and Jamie Smith; Brother: David Powelczyk Jr., Nephews: Devin and Damien Powelczyk; Aunt: Beverly (Marvin) Putney; Uncles: Ronald (Susan) and Gerald (Donna) Ramsey; And lots of cousins.

She is preceded in death by: Mother: Marjorie Powelczyk.

She was a 1986 graduate of Greece Athena High School.
