GOUVERNEUR – Nettie Rose Link, age 100, formerly of Gouverneur, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Spencerport.

There will be a graveside service held in the Hailesboro Cemetery on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Beth Quick officiating. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home in Gouverneur. Nettie was born on November 19, 1916 in Russell to the late Elmer and Lulu (Dugall) Traver. She married Earl V. Link on August 13, 1935. Mr. Link passed away on July 5, 1980. Mrs. Link lived in Gouverneur until moving to Spencerport in 1999. She had worked as a clerk for W.T. Grant’s and Ames Department Stores.

Nettie loved time spent with her family, especially during Sunday dinners. She enjoyed reading books, knitting, and was a member of the Rebekah’s.

Her survivors include her son and his wife, Gary and Ann Link of Spencerport; her daughter and her husband, Carol and Bruce Ayers of Spencerport; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Earl Link; a sister and her husband, Dorothy and Bill Randall; and a brother in infancy.

Winthrop – Sandra A. McLaughlin, 76, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Canton – Potsdam Hospital with her children at her side Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.

Sandra was born on May 15, 1941 in Brasher Falls, daughter of the late Douglas D. and Huldah (Tilden) Ploof, Jr. She graduated from St. Lawrence Central School and continued her education at the University of Buffalo. On February 11, 1961, she married Peter J. McLaughlin at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence with Fr. B. A. O’Connell celebrating. They shared 44 years of love and many lasting memories. Peter passed on September 27, 2005.

Sandra worked at the St. Regis Nursing Home for over 30 years, starting as a Nurse’s Aide, Physical Therapy Aide, Activities Director and Administrative Assistant. She dedicated herself to her service to the elderly, while maintaining a loving home for her family. She was active for many years in the Stockholm Democratic Committee and the Board of Elections.

Her family will remember the long rides to their camp on the Deer River, the special moments at Christmas and the love she had for her family. She was always true to the people she loved and never expected anything in return. Her maternal nature earned her the love and esteem of her children and endeared her to her grandchildren who were her greatest joy.

Sandra is survived by her children, Melissa McLaughlin-TenEyck and Steve Evans of Winthrop, Mickey J. McLaughlin and Emily Sanchez of Potsdam and Marcy M. McLaughlin of Tucson, AZ, one brother, Jim and Nancy Ploof of Winthrop and one sister, Barbara Ploof-Steele of Brasher Falls, five grandchildren, Trevor and Tara TenEyck of Brasher Falls, Katelyn TenEyck of Athens, GA, Molly TenEyck of Lake Placid, Courtney Cooper of Tucson, AZ, Zachary Vincent of Tucson, AZ, Miles Paxton McLaughlin of Potsdam and Simon Peter McLaughlin (on the way), two great grandchildren, Alyvia TenEyck and Adrianna TenEyck, her faithful canine companion, Murphy, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 1 to 4 pm at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Sandra’s funeral service will be Monday at St. Patrick Church at 10 am in Brasher Falls. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

GOUVERNEUR- Francis D. “Red Fox” Briggs, age 80, of Gouverneur, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Gouverneur Hospital.

Calling hours for Francis will be on Thursday, July 6, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. There will be a graveside service on Friday, July 7th at 11:00 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery with Rev. Beth Quick officiating. Condolences may be shared at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com.

Francis was born on March 30, 1937 to the late Margaret (Briggs) Meyers. He attended Gouverneur School and was raised by Ralph and Olive Pratt in Hailesboro. In 1955, he entered into the United States Airforce and served until his honorable discharge in 1959. Francis married Denelda Fuller on March 25, 1960 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with Rev. Stanley Brown officiating. He worked as a truck driver for Potters Industries in Potsdam. He had previously worked at Kraft Foods, St. Lawrence County and McCallister’s.

Francis was a member of the Dads of Foreign War and was a former Volunteer Fireman for the Hermon and Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Departments. He loved camping at Brennan Beach and going on golf cart rides with his dog.

Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Denelda; three sons, Earl and Penny Briggs, Eric and Kathryn Briggs and Scott Briggs; a daughter, Coleen Desormeaux and her companion Bill Farr; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by a granddaughter, Deseray Briggs.

Waddington: Joseph I. LaDue Jr., 78 of Maple St. passed away on June 29, 2017 at the Riverledge United Helpers. Friends and family may be received on Sunday July 2, 2017 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Phillips Memorial Home in Waddington. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Church in Waddington. Interment will be held in St. Lawrence Cemetery in Louisville.

Joseph was born on November 2, 1938 in Raymondville, the son of Joseph and Janette (Eurto) LaDue. His first marriage ended in divorce, he then married Carolyn Downing Sovie. Joe, known to many as “Shaky”, retired from GM Powertrain in 2000 after 30 years. He loved carpentry work and was employed by Danko Construction for a period of time. Joe was loved by all and was a great conversationalist.

Joe is survived by his wife Carolyn of Waddington; his children, Trudy and William Murphy of Victor, NY, Joseph III and Diane LaDue of Tupper Lake, Keith and Marilyn LaDue, Loni and Wendy LaDue and Travis LaDue all of Norfolk, Preston LaDue of OR, Aaron and Anne LaDue of Massena; three stepchildren, Teresa and Curt Dishaw, Christopher and Laura Sovie both of Ogdensburg and Jeffrey Sovie of Canton; eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren; seven step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren.

Also surviving Joseph are three brothers, Edward and Pat LaDue of Hamlin, NY, Angus and Meg LaDue of Norfolk and Charles “Chipper” and Marilyn LaDue of Norfolk; a sister, Josephine Paige of Colton and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by two sons, Raymond and Shawn LaDue; three sisters, Ellen Tracey, Margaret Simmons and Ella Simmons and a brother Albert LaDue.

St. Regis Falls – Adam R. Cox, 33, passed away unexpectedly, June 28, 2017. Arrangements are entrusted with the Hammill Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls, where visitation will be held Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 pm at St. Ann’s Church in St. Regis Falls followed by burial in St. Ann’s Cemetery.

Adam was born on December 28, 1983 in Saranac Lake, son of Ralph E. Cox and Irene M. Cascanette. He graduated from St. Regis Falls High School and went on to take college courses at North Country Community College. He became a Correctional Officer, working at the Franklin Correctional Facility in Malone.

Adam was very committed to his community. He joined the St. Regis Falls Fire Department and with his dedication earned the title of First Assistant Chief (Car 150-01). He made many lifelong friends on his watch. He is presently the President of the St. Regis Falls Sportsmen’s Club, who at a young age, was admired for his good and kind nature. His ambition led him to the position of Union Steward for his union, NYSCOPBA. He was on a mission to improve the working conditions and safety of it’s members.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and riding his Harley. Adam enjoyed singing, dancing, watching music videos, but especially listening to Johnny Cash. He would be seen accompanied by his canine companion, Gunner, around town and hiking. At home, his feline named Lucy would be there for him when they returned. Adam was family oriented, with a compassionate heart and caring soul. He held a great love and admiration for his parents and sisters, who will all cherish his memory.

Adam is survived by his parents, Irene Cox of St. Regis Falls and Ralph Cox of St. Regis Falls, his sisters, Heather and Daniel Rondeau of St. Regis Falls and Laura and Richard Chapman of Dickinson Center, his maternal grandmother, Helen Cascanette of St. Regis Falls and his paternal grandmother, Joyce Cox of Dickinson Center, nieces and nephews, Daniel Rondeau III, Brittany Threlkeld, Kerrigan Rondeau, Caydence Rondeau, Noah Rondeau, Luke Chapman, Anna Chapman and Cole Chapman, his canine companion, Gunner and his feline companion, Lucy. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Bernard Cascanette, his paternal grandfather, Ernest Cox and his cousin, Sierra Riley.

Frank J. Lenney

CANTON — Frank J. Lenney of Potsdam passed away in his sleep Friday morning at United Helpers nursing home, where he had been a resident. Born in Potsdam NY, September 15, 1927, son of Edwin J. and Margaret (Murphy) Lenney. He graduated from Potsdam High school in 1946. After high school he joined the army and was stationed in Italy. Upon his return he attended Paul Smith College graduating with a forestry degree in 1950. He briefly moved west for a job with Potlatch Forestry in Idaho. The construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway brought Frank back east and he work on construction of Iroquois dam and Robert Moses power dam. In 1957 Frank began working for the United State Postal Service where he was employed for nearly 30 years.

He married Mary G. Jermano on June 5, 1965 at St. Mary’s Church in Massena. They were both active parishioners at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, golfing, and bird watching. Frank was a member of the BPO Elks Potsdam 2074 for 56 years and served as Exalted Ruler in 1977-78. When wintering in Harlingen TX Frank joined the ROMEO’s (Retired Old Men Eating Out) while Mary was active with the Red Hat Society.

He is survived by a son Christopher (Danielle) Lenney. Brother, Edwin J Lenney, Sisters-in-law; Betty (Michael) Larosa, Anna McKenna, Loretta Connolly, Angela Wood, and Christine Volk. He has two step-grandchildren (Makenna and Ethan.) He has 9 nieces and 16 nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Mary J. Lenney, sister Florence (Tootie) Flint, in-laws, Mary Whalen Lenney, Bill Flint, Donald McKenna, Catherine and Fred Hand, William Wood, Daniel Volk, 2 nephews and 1 niece.

A mass of Christian Burial for Frank will be held on Friday, July 7th at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam with Rev. Stephen Rocker celebrant. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Service on Thursday, July 6th from 4-7pm. Judith Lee O’Neill Morgia

Judith Lee O’Neill Morgia, 72, of 149 N. Orchard St., Watertown passed June 29, 2017 at the Samaritan Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born on August 30, 1944 in Watertown, NY, daughter of the late James M. and Betty K. Bartholomew O’Neill, she attended St. Patrick’s School up to the 8th grade and then graduated from Watertown High School in 1962.

Following school she married Samuel L. Robey while he was serving in the US Army. The couple moved to Germany and the marriage ended in divorce. Judy then resided in California and Rochester, NY before returning to Watertown in 1970.

She worked for several years as a bartender in the Watertown area. She then attended JCC and graduated in 1980 with an Associate’s Degree. In 1982 she went to work for Jefferson County Department of Social Services, retiring in 2002.

In 1990, she married Scott Morgia, the marriage ended in divorce.

Judy enjoyed playing Scrabble, playing cards, going to the casino with friends and family, and traveling. She also loved reading on her Kindle, helping others and caring for her beloved cats.

Among her survivors are a brother, Michael L. O’Neill, Cicero, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joanne E. and Morland K. Rusho, Woodville, NY, Jacqueline M. O’Neill, Watertown; a son, Jeffrey O’Neill, Alaska, an uncle, Joseph Bartholomew, Watertown, four children she raised as her own, Paula (and Paul) Edwards, Black River, Ralph Filippi, Watertown, Antonio Filippi, FL and Maria Filippi, two grandchildren, Jessica and Rebecca Edwards, several nieces and nephews.

Judy left this earth suddenly and before her time. Her generosity and kindness will be greatly missed by her family, friends and beloved furbabies.

A funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 5 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral home. Calling hours will precede the service from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in the Glenwood Cemetery.

ANTWERP — Lawrence G. “Larry” Cole, 81, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2017 at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

Calling hours are on Monday from 1100 am to 1:00 pm with a funeral service at 1:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Rev. Beth Quick, pastor of the Gouverneur United Methodist Church officiating and burial in Hailesboro Cemetery.

Lawrence was born in Gouverneur on October 1, 1935, the son of Glenn and Monibel Brown Cole.

He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1953 and served in the United States Army Reserve.

On August 22, 1957, Larry married Marjorie K. Andrews at the United Methodist Church parsonage with Rev. Wood officiating.

Larry worked at Cassaw’s Gas Station, Dodd’s Shell Station, Dodds Motor Company, International Talc Company, and he retired from the papermill in Natural Dam in 1997 after 35 years of employment.

He was an outdoorsman, enjoying camping, hunting, fishing, and spending time at the family cottage on Black Lake. Larry was also an avid NASCAR fan, cheering for everyone not named Jimmy Johnson.

Larry is survived by his wife of 60 years Marjorie, his children Rocky and Carol Cole of Alaska, Roxanne and Ronald Slate of Gouverneur, Daniel Cole of Gouverneur, Dana and Amy Cole of Antwerp, his brother Scott and Sharon Cole of E. Syracuse, his sisters Gloria and Gary Smith of Harrisville, Delores and Ronald Hartle of Gouverneur, several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jason and Claudia Slate of Arizona, Matthew and Kelli Slate of Westvale, Gregory Cole and Kim Hilligas of Gouverneur, Nathan and Megan Cole of Gouverneur, Jonathon Cole of Antwerp, Timothy and Jacki Burns of Alaska, a stepgrandson Adam and Kristine Fykes of Alaska, his great grandchildren Alaxa, Erik, and Hannah Slate, Ethan and Quinn Slate, Wyette and Willow Cole, Teagan and Vivian Cole, Velelina and Chaeli Burns. Larry is predeceased by his parents Glenn and Monibel, a brother Richard Cole, a daughter-in-law Jody Cole, and a great granddaughter Macy Slate.

Pasquale L. “Patsy” Carbone, 89, Bellew Ave., Watertown passed away Thursday afternoon, June 29, 2017, at Hospice of Jefferson County at the Ellis Farm.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Thursday, July 6, from 5 - 8PM. A prayer service will be at the funeral home on Friday, July 7, at 9:30AM followed by the funeral mass celebrated at 10AM at St. Anthony’s Church with Msgr. Robert Aucoin, pastor, officiating. Entombment will be in Glenwood Mausoleum.

Patsy was born in Watertown on April 21, 1928, son of Natale and Antonette Schocchetti Carbone. He attended Boon St. School and was a graduate of Watertown High School. He served actively in the US Army from May 22, 1951 to May 9, 1953 and was honorably discharged from the Reserves on May 21, 1957.

On December 14, 1959 he married Marie McDonald at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Benoit C. Dostie presiding. Mrs. Carbone died May 10, 2016.

He owned the Carbone Bros. Plaza on Coffeen Street. Patsy was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, a member of the Northside Improvement League, and a life member of Elks Lodge 496. He enjoyed card playing, the Boston Red Sox, and wagering on horse races. He was known as a compassionate, loving, and accepting mild-mannered gentleman.

Patsy is survived by his three loving daughters, Christie L. Fiorentino and husband, Louis, Springhill, FL, Patti L. Hancock and husband, Glenn, Adams, and Lisa M. Simpson and fiancée, Ronald Whiting, Tampa, FL; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Louise LaMartina and husband, Tony, Rochester; sister-in-law, Carol Rizzo and brother-in-law, Simon Sawyer; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with his wife, Marie, Patsy was predeceased by his brother, Carmen “Toot” Carbone, sister, Victoria Leva, and sister-in-law, Delores Chapman.

The family would like to thank Dr. Sindhu and the nursing staff at Watertown Dialysis Center for their excellent care throughout the years. Additionally, they would like to extend a special thank you to Maryann O’Rouke.

LOWVILLE – Joyce M. Powis, 62, of State Route 177, Lowville, passed away Friday afternoon, June 30, 2017, at her home.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 3, 2017 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville, with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, officiating. Burial will follow in West Lowville Cemetery. She is survived by her husband of nearly 43 years, Robert Sr., her children, Robert Powis Jr. and his wife, Lupe of Lowville; Lynette Franks and her fiancé, Scott Lampson of Martinsburg; six grandchildren, Brian, Leti, Beto, Makayla, Blake and Dalton; five siblings and their spouses, Michael D. and Wendy Mahoney of Lowville; Patricia L. and Patrick O’Brien of Lowville; Dennis J. and Jackie Mahoney of Castorland; Neil P. and Tammy Mahoney of Glenfield; William T. and Liana Mahoney of Lowville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her parents, William and Julia Mahoney; and a sister, Barbara Ann Mahoney.

Joyce was born on September 30, 1954 in Lowville, NY, a daughter of the late William D. and Julia E. Horvath Mahoney. Joyce graduated from Lowville Academy in 1973. On July 27, 1974, she married Robert S. Powis at Lowville United Methodist Church. Joyce raised her family and worked at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility in the activities department and for Thisse’s Meat Market in Lowville before working for the Town Hall Theatre for many years. She has worked with her daughter and granddaughter for Kalil’s Grocery in Inlet for the past two summers. Joyce worked as an election inspector in the Town of Harrisburg for more than twenty years.

Joyce was active with the 4–H department at Lewis County Cooperative Extension. She enjoyed crocheting, horses, and most of all, spending time with her family.

Frank W. Robbins

ANTWERP — Frank W. Robbins, 86, of Depot Street died Saturday morning, July 1, 2017 while under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Born January 25, 1931 in Smithville, NY, he was the son of Harold and Marion Charnick Robbins. He attended a one room school house in Smithville, Adams Center Central School and graduated from Bellville Union Academy in 1949.

He married Helen I. LaComb of Norfork on January 27, 1952 in Smithville with Rev. Bernard C. Schell officiating.

Mr. Robbins served in the United States Naval Reserves from April 13, 1948 to February 13, 1952, in the United States Army from February 14, 1952 to February 21, 1954 and the United States Army Reserves until August 27, 1956. He served in Korea from 1952 to 1954.

Following his honorable discharge Mr. Robbins was employed with Carr & Bitz, Inc., Depauville and George’s Plumbing and Heating, Clayton, where he did his apprenticeship in plumbing and heating under the GI Bill.

On July 5, 1961 they couple purchased the C. E. Duegaw Hardware Store in Antwerp, NY. They moved to Antwerp on November 1, 1961 and ran the business as Robbins Plumbing, Heating and Hardware until their retirement on January 1, 2001.

At age sixty five (1996) Mr. Robbins designed and built their present home on Depot Street, with the help of many friends, especially Jim Buckley.

In 2015 he and his son, Kurt took the Honor Flight, Syracuse Mission 005 to Washington, DC.

Mr. Robbins was a member of the Antwerp American Legion Post #916, Masonic Lodge, Philadelphia, Antwerp Fire Department, First Congregational Church of Antwerp, Indian River American Field Service (AFS), Philadelphia and member and Past President of the Antwerp Rotary,

He enjoyed camping, sharing meals with family and friends, his vegetable and flower gardens, model trains and traveling to England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Holland and the Caribbean.

Survivors include his wife of sixty five years, Helen; a son and his wife, Kurt and Maureen, Watertown; a daughter, Janice Hull, Antwerp; American Field Service son and his wife, Michael and Grace Kenny, Norwood, South Australia; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Glenn Robbins, Liverpool, NY and John and Chris Robbins, Westford, MA; an aunt, Lois DeGone, Watertown; four grandchildren, Kaitlin Backus and her husband, Jacob, Kristin Dickson and her husband, James, Louis Lee Hull and his wife, Victoria and Cassandra Hull and her companion, Anthony Eager; six great grandchildren, James Dickson, Julian Backus, Dustin Murphy, Randy Murphy, Mia Hull and Greyson Eager; nieces and nephews.

A grandson, Brett William Robbins and two brothers, Joe and Albert Robbins died before him.

The funeral will be 10 am Friday at the First Congregational Church of Antwerp with Rev. Genevieve Dox and Rev. Kenneth Leamon officiating. A reception will follow at the Antwerp American Legion. Burial with Military Honors will be at 3 pm at Brookside Cemetery, Watertown.

Calling hours are 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm Thursday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa.

GREIG — Doris Y. Kogut, 81, of Fish Creek Road, widow of Joseph, affectionately known as Bonnie, passed away on Friday June 30, 2017 at St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital, New Hartford following a brief illness.

Doris was born on July 19, 1935 in Lowville, a daughter of David and Helen Graves Jones. She was raised in Greig on the Jones Road, graduating from General Martin High School with the Class of 1954. Following her education she was employed for a time at Utica Cutlery, before working alongside her mother and grandmother as a cook at logging camps in Raquette Lake.

Doris was united in marriage with Joseph Kogut on May 26, 1962 at St. Mary’s Church, Glenfield. The couple settled in Greig before moving to the Kotary Road, Constableville, where together they operated a dairy farm. They retired in 1987 to a home they built in Greig. Mr. Kogut, a US Army veteran of WWII, passed away on May 8, 1990.

Following her retirement, Bonnie enjoyed the simple things in life, whether that was rocking on her front porch in the sun, going for a ride on the back country roads, or the cherished time spent with her children and grandchildren. Throughout her life she devoted herself to giving back to her neighbors and community, Ma Kogut’s door was always open to everyone.

She is survived by her son, Paul (Ann) Kogut and their children Joshua and Joseph, Yakima, WA, her daughter, Dawn (Richard) Emerson and their children Keith, Mitchell, Audrey, and Damon, and her daughter, Vicky (Roy) Aden and their children Steven and Jessica, all of Lyons Falls; her sister Bernice Mihalyi, Glenfield, sisters-in-law Geraldine Jones, Lyons Falls and Jean Mooney, Boonville, several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Joseph, she was predeceased by a grandson Jacob Kogut, and her brothers Donald, David, and Robert Jones, and sisters Jean Markham, Phyllis Youngs and Beatrice Fowler.

Funeral services will begin with a 12:00 Noon prayer service on Wednesday, July 5, at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 pm at St. Mary’s Church, Glenfield, with Rev. Christopher Carrara, pastor officiating. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Constableville. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 am until 12:00 Noon at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lyons Falls Fire Dept. Ambulance, P.O. Box # 520, Lyons Falls, NY 13368.

WATERTOWN — Verna Backus, 86, Centennial Apartments, and widow of Osborne R. (Don) Backus, passed away Thursday, June 29th at the Samaritan Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 pm Thursday, July 6th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Smith from the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will follow in the North Watertown Cemetery. Calling hours are from 11 am – 1 pm prior to the funeral on Thursday.

Verna is survived by her children Judy (William) Cain, Dianne (Neil Dicob) Backus, Barbara (Michael) LaMont, George (Cheri) Backus, Scott (Cheryl) Backus; beloved grandchildren William Cain, Jr, Thomas Cain, Chelsea (Nick) Martin, Michael LaMont, Amanda (Tyson) Stutz, Nichole (Matt Dietly) Backus and Katie Backus and a beloved great grandson Dominic Scott Martin; her siblings Mary-Ellen (Peter) Vitto and David D. (Jean) Hughes; many nieces and nephews; a son-in-law, Christian MacGregor.

She was predeceased by a daughter Sandi MacGregor on April 15th, 2009; siblings Mildred Hughes, Inah (Hughes) Eichorn, Richard Hughes, Edna (Hughes) Jones, William Hughes, Jr. and Robert Hughes.

Verna was born in Carthage, April 3, 1931, a daughter to William J. and Sarah North Hughes. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1950. Verna worked at the Woolworth Five and Dime from 1950-1956. She later worked at the Salvation Army Thrift Store for many years.

She married Osborne R. (Don) Backus on April 18, 1952. Don was the son of George and Effie Backus of Beacon, NY. Mr. Backus passed away July 7th, 1974.

Verna loved to bake cookies with her family, read and help others. Verna was a blessing to all who knew her. She was the heart of the family for all her children.
