ANTWERP — Frank W. Robbins, 86, of Depot Street died Saturday morning, July 1, 2017 while under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Born January 25, 1931 in Smithville, NY, he was the son of Harold and Marion Charnick Robbins. He attended a one room school house in Smithville, Adams Center Central School and graduated from Bellville Union Academy in 1949.
He married Helen I. LaComb of Norfork on January 27, 1952 in Smithville with Rev. Bernard C. Schell officiating.
Mr. Robbins served in the United States Naval Reserves from April 13, 1948 to February 13, 1952, in the United States Army from February 14, 1952 to February 21, 1954 and the United States Army Reserves until August 27, 1956. He served in Korea from 1952 to 1954.
Following his honorable discharge Mr. Robbins was employed with Carr & Bitz, Inc., Depauville and George’s Plumbing and Heating, Clayton, where he did his apprenticeship in plumbing and heating under the GI Bill.
On July 5, 1961 they couple purchased the C. E. Duegaw Hardware Store in Antwerp, NY. They moved to Antwerp on November 1, 1961 and ran the business as Robbins Plumbing, Heating and Hardware until their retirement on January 1, 2001.
At age sixty five (1996) Mr. Robbins designed and built their present home on Depot Street, with the help of many friends, especially Jim Buckley.
In 2015 he and his son, Kurt took the Honor Flight, Syracuse Mission 005 to Washington, DC.
Mr. Robbins was a member of the Antwerp American Legion Post #916, Masonic Lodge, Philadelphia, Antwerp Fire Department, First Congregational Church of Antwerp, Indian River American Field Service (AFS), Philadelphia and member and Past President of the Antwerp Rotary,
He enjoyed camping, sharing meals with family and friends, his vegetable and flower gardens, model trains and traveling to England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Holland and the Caribbean.
Survivors include his wife of sixty five years, Helen; a son and his wife, Kurt and Maureen, Watertown; a daughter, Janice Hull, Antwerp; American Field Service son and his wife, Michael and Grace Kenny, Norwood, South Australia; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Glenn Robbins, Liverpool, NY and John and Chris Robbins, Westford, MA; an aunt, Lois DeGone, Watertown; four grandchildren, Kaitlin Backus and her husband, Jacob, Kristin Dickson and her husband, James, Louis Lee Hull and his wife, Victoria and Cassandra Hull and her companion, Anthony Eager; six great grandchildren, James Dickson, Julian Backus, Dustin Murphy, Randy Murphy, Mia Hull and Greyson Eager; nieces and nephews.
A grandson, Brett William Robbins and two brothers, Joe and Albert Robbins died before him.
The funeral will be 10 am Friday at the First Congregational Church of Antwerp with Rev. Genevieve Dox and Rev. Kenneth Leamon officiating. A reception will follow at the Antwerp American Legion. Burial with Military Honors will be at 3 pm at Brookside Cemetery, Watertown.
