Helen was born on December 8, 1929, in Lowville, NY to Lester and Pearl (Wakefield) Weller. She attended school in Lowville, where she graduated high school early at the age of 16. She attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA for one semester before returning home to help her younger sisters after the death of their mother. She married Donald N.
