Richard Bertrand

Richard G. Bertrand, 101, James St., Clayton passed away with his family by his side on Monday, July 10, 2017, at Samaritan Summit Village where he had resided since January 23.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton on Sunday, July 16, from 2 - 5PM. A prayer service will be at the funeral home on Monday, July 17, at 10:15AM followed by the funeral mass celebrated at St. Mary’s Church at 11AM with Rev. Arthur J. LaBaff, pastor, presiding. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Dick was born in Clayton on September 10, 1915, son of George W. and Lena DeRosia Bertrand. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. He married Virginia Cantwell on October 10, 1934 at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. George E. Racette officiating. Mrs. Bertrand, owner and operator of Restaway Lodge from 1940 to 1980, died April 19, 1993.

On November 5, 1943 he enlisted in the US Army, serving in Company B 120th Infantry. He saw service in Rhineland and Ardennes and received the European African Middle Easter Theater Ribbon with two bronze battle stars and Combat Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged on December 6, 1945.

Dick was a postal carrier for the US Postal Service, became Postmaster, and retired after 35 years of service. He was a communicant and trustee of St. Mary’s Church, and he was a 101 year member of the parish. He was a Bishop Conroy General Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 350 since 1933. He had been a member of American Legion Post 61 since 1945 and had held many local and State offices. Dick was involved in starting the Clayton Housing Authority, was Chairman of the organization for many years, and was still serving on the Board of Directors at the time of his death. He enjoyed golf and was instrumental in starting the Senior Men’s Golf League, which is now named the Dick Bertrand Senior Golf League. He had been its secretary and treasurer and played golf until he was 96.

He is survived by his son, Richard C. Bertrand and wife, Patti, Clayton; daughter, Gayon B. Meyer and husband, John F., Liverpool; nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with his wife, Virginia, Dick was predeceased by his brother, John A. Bertrand, and sister, June Marie Thompson.

Michael Scalera

Michael A. Scalera was called home on July 12, 2017 at Albany Medical Center, he was 40 years old. Michael was born on October 1, 1976 to John and Maryann Scalera. Michael grew up in Athens, NY and graduated from the Coxsackie-Athens School District. After High School, Michael worked as a chef at Pleasant Acres and most recently worked in the security office at Sleepy Hollow Lake. Michael enjoyed watching sports and loved the Yankees and Giants. He also enjoyed cooking, fantasy baseball with friends and especially Sunday dinner with family. Michael fought a difficult, but courageous battle for over 20 years with Kidney Disease. Michael always managed to work through the pain and come back on top. The highlight of Michael’s life was his 5 year old princess Makayla. Even as the end neared, she still could always make him smile! Michael is survived by his parents John and Maryann Scalera of Athens, his wife Sarah Scalera and daughter Makayla Scalera of Athens, his sister Sandra Francis and her husband Russell of Coxsackie, his twin brother Marc Scalera and his wife Holly of Athens, his father in law Lawrence Van Dyke of Catskill, his sister and brother in law Shannon and Rich Slater of Coxsackie, his niece and nephew Stephanie and Russell Francis of Coxsackie, his niece and nephew Alyssa and Nicholas Scalera of Athens, his nephews Alex and Kaleb Slater of Coxsackie, along with many other Uncles, Aunts and Cousins. His Brother John A. Scalera, his Grandmother Anna Zanchelli and his Uncle Addolorato Zanchelli preceded him in death. Calling hours will be Friday, July 14 from 4-8pm at the Richards funeral home in Athens, NY. Mass of Catholic burial will be Saturday, July 15 at 10 am at the St. Patrick’s Church in Athens, NY.

Richard D. Johnson, Sr., 83, Watertown, passed away Tuesday at the Hospice Residence on Gotham St. surrounded by his family.

The funeral service will be 3 pm Friday, July 14th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Calling hours are Friday from 1pm – 3 pm prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in Sanford Corners Cemetery, Calcium.

He is survived by his wife Sandra, 2 sons Richard, Jr. (Carol),., Adams Center and David (Cindy), Calcium; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; step-children Robert (Laura Mack) Martin, Watertown; Lynn (Stephanie) Martin, Sackets Harbor, David (Lori) Martin, Watertown and Patricia (Charles) Chase, Dexter; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters Ethelyne Cousins, Hagerstown, MD, Bonny Cook, Mesa, AZ and Nancy Walters, Watertown; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by siblings James Johnson and twin sisters Loretta Plummer and Doretta Yott.

He was born in Syracuse December 31, 1933, a son to James and Florence Loshaw Johnson. He served with the US Air Force from 1951-1955. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Richard drove for Greyhound Bus for several years. He later went to work for the City of Watertown, retiring as Supervisor for the Bus System in 1994.

Richard married Madeline Tiff in 1954. She passed away in August of 2010. He married Sandra Lennox on December 25, 2010.

Richard played steel guitar with the country band “The Mustangs” for 20 years. He enjoyed singing at “Ham Jam” on Tuesday nights in Brownville and Dexter. He was a member of the American Legion Post 61.

Most of all, Richard enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.

MORRISTOWN—Joyce A. Mac Arthur, 84, 302 Caroline Street, Morristown, wife of Dr. Earl W. Mac Arthur, died Tuesday evening at her home in Morristown.

Among her survivors are husband Earl W., former President of then Canton ATC, now SUNY Canton and two sons, Steven, Diamond Point, and Peter, Canton.

Nellie “Virginia” Manchester, 81, of Evans Mills, died June 18, 2017, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, Virginia.

Born December 5, 1935, in Indianapolis, Indiana, she was the daughter of Richard and Nellie Roach.

She married Douglas B. Manchester Jr. on May 23, 1964.

Nellie worked at Northland Electric until her retirement. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband until settling down again in Northern, New York. Nellie also enjoyed caring for her service dog, Baby, and visiting with family and friends.

Surviving, in addition to Baby, are a daughter and her significant other, Deborah Manchester and Stephen Washer II, Watertown; a granddaughter, Nicole Bush, Black River; a grandson and his wife, Ryan and Tara Hyneman, Gouverneur; a grandson and his significant other, Christopher Hyneman and Tamariah Bruska, Liverpool; a great granddaughter, Alexandria Hyneman; two step great granddaughters, Emily Howard, and Layla Bruska; and another great granddaughter on the way.

Previously deceased, in addition to her husband, Douglas, are a son, David Bush; three brothers, Richard Roach Jr., Paul Roach, and Charles Roach; and a sister, Barbara Lytle.

Thank you to all the skilled and caring staff at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, who made her final days as comfortable as possible.

MORRISTOWN- The funeral services for Joyce A. Mac Arthur, 84, of 302 Caroline St. in Morristown, will be held on August 4th at 10:30AM at St. John the Evangelist Church in Morristown by co-celebrants Rev. Douglas Lucia and Rev. Jay Seymour, officiating. Burial will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery.

Joyce died Tuesday July 11, 2017 at her home in Morristown

Born on December 9, 1932, she was the daughter of Harold J and Dorothy Carole (Harrington) Mulligan. Joyce graduated from Sherburne High School in 1950.

She worked at Norwich Pharmaceutical Company for two years before marrying her husband of nearly 65 years, Dr. Earl Mac Arthur. The Mac Arthur’s were wed on July 12, 1952 in Sherburne, NY at Saint Malachy’s Roman Catholic Church. Joyce quickly assumed the role of “President’s Wife,” as her husband was the President of SUNY Canton for 20 years. A true host, she was instrumental in having the annual Christmas Gathering. Joyce had a way of making everyone feel welcome in her home. Joyce was the Honorary President of the Women’s Club at SUNY Canton, and served on the Board of Directors at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center, as well as the Claxton Hepburn Medical Center Foundation, for many years starting in the late 1970’s. She was a member at St. John the Evangelist in Morristown, a former member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Canton, and St. John the Evangelist in Naples, Florida, where she and her husband spent winters for many years.

Joyce is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Dr. Earl Mac Arthur, and two sons: Steven, of Diamond Point, NY, and Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Peter (Martha), of Canton; 4 grandchildren: Christopher (Alene), of Saratoga Springs, NY, Nicolas (Carly) of Clifton Park, NY, Samantha, of Boston, MA, and Shane, of Canton, NY; 4 great grandchildren: Joseph, Paul, Chloe and Jon; Two brothers: Harry (Sandy) Mulligan of Norwich, NY, Paul (Gloria) of Hamilton, NY and one sister, Theresa (Andrew) Heinegg of Potsdam, NY, as well as multiple nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral service for O. George Cary, 77, of Potsdam will be held on Monday, July 17, 2017 at 11:00 am at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton with David Perry, officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Pierrepont. George died on Tuesday, July 11, 2017.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 16, 2017 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 at the funeral home. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association.

George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan of Potsdam; by sons, Geoff (Linda) of Stockholm; Michael (Lisa) Cary of Pierrepont; Richard (Tamra) Cary of Liverpool and Timothy (Jennifer) Cary of Windsor, VT; daughters, Irene (David) Perry of Hopkinton; Bernice Cary of Ogdensburg and Tammy (Phil) Snyder of Potsdam; 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a brother, Claude Cougler of Germany.

A daughter, Barbara Ann, brother Wendel Cary, sister Inez Sullivan, grandson Jason Cary and great-grandson Ralph O’Donnell predecease him.

George was born September 30, 1939 in Canton, the son of Stanley Cary and Hazel Cougler. He attended Colton-Pierrepont Central School and later received his GED. On January 23, 1960, George was married to Joan B. Miller at the United Methodist Church in Potsdam with Rev. Merle Brown officiating. Early on George worked for AMF in Lowville, NY making bowling pins. Later, he worked for Slavin’s Furniture; from there he began working for Roy Barstow installing flooring, which he also did for Modern Floors, Winthrop Furniture and Garn’s Supply, where he retired from in 1992.

George enjoyed woodworking, making rocking chairs, doll houses and cradles amongst other item, he enjoyed the guitar, working on small gas engines, cooking and old country music.

August M. Atkins, 69, of Ritchie Rd., DeKalb Jct. passed away Tuesday, July 11th at University Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. Allen-Denesha Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. There will be no calling hours or funeral service. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. He is survived by his son, Matthew Atkins of DeKalb Jct. and a granddaughter. Mr. Atkins was born on August 13, 1947 in Olean, N.Y., son of John James and Rosa (McElfresh) Atkins. Over the years he worked as a truck driver, a mechanic, and at his family farm on Ritchie Rd. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and with his family.

Burial will follow the services in Riverside Cemetery, Norwood. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. Mrs. Murray passed away early Friday morning, July 14, 2017 at Maplewood.

Barbara is survived by her two sons, Garth and Stephanie Murray, Norfolk; Bruce and Suzanne Murray, Raymondville; her two daughters, Jackie and Edward Lyons, Raymondville and Christine Greene and David Miller, Forney, TX; her beloved nine grandchildren, Brent, Christopher, Brooke, Corey and Nicole Murray; Derek Lyons, Danielle Planty, Meghan Jones and Sarah Greene as well as her nine great-grandchildren. Barbara is also survived by her brother, Ernest, Wisconsin and several nieces and nephews. Barbara was pre-deceased by her husband Reginald “Reggie” on March 21, 2003 and a brother, William LaBrake.

Born in Norwood on October 12, 1929 to the late James and Agnes Hand LaBrake, Barbara graduated from High School and married Reginald G. “Reggie” Murray on June 20, 1948. Barbara was a devoted homemaker and also a devoted babysitter for 25+ years. Barbara was a communicant of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Norwood and was very active with the St. Philip’s Ladies Guild and the Order of the Eastern Star. Joseph passed away Tuesday, July 11th at his home. Born December 23, 1980 a son to Steven and Deborah Charlton Baildon, Sr.

He enjoyed playing video games, watching wrestling, playing with dogs and mostly the time that he spent with his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by 4 brothers and their families, Christopher Clearwater, Malone, Steven (Hannah) and their children, Mya, Cody, Jossalynn and Carissa, Rickey E.

(Sarah) Martin III and their children Kyler, Corinne, Kayleb, Coriahna, Caragan and Coralee, Michael R. Martin (Stephen Bibley and their child Stephen Sibley; his father Steve Baildon, Ogdensburg.

Joseph was predeceased by his mother, Deborah.

Barbara A. Hartman, 64, of 26836 Nellis Road, Evans Mills, passed July 13, 2017 at the Samaritan Medical Center.

She was born on November 6, 1952 in Watertown, daughter of John and Elsie (Pharoah) Jobson. She attended WHS and in 1975 she graduated with high honors from cosmetology school in Columbus, Ohio.

She married Samuel D. Hartman on October 2, 1975 in Belton, TX, while he was serving in the US Army. Throughout his military career the couple resided throughout the US, Germany and retired in Aberdeen,MD. Upon his retirement the couple moved to Watertown in 1990, where Barbara worked at Quality Inn on Arsenal St. as head housekeeper and supervisor for 18 years.

She enjoyed making crafts, traveling, going to the casinos, family gatherings and she loved her animals.

Among her survivors are her loving husband, Samuel D. Hartman, Evans Mills, a son and daughter in law, Sam J. and Tabitha Hartman, VA, her mother, Elsie Jobson, Watertown, three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bonnie and John Allen, Watertown, Jamie Jobson, Watertown, Cathy and Charlie Mackey, Dexter, five brothers and two sisters-in-law, John Jobson, Jerry Jobson, Jack and Nancy Jobson, Art and Robin Jobson, Jesse Jobson all of Watertown, several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her father, John Jobson.

Calling hours will be held 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 16 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home 117 N. Massey St. Watertown.

The Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 18 at the Evans Mills United Methodist Church.

Elizabeth Fibison

Elizabeth Fibison (Betty) died July 10, 2017, at the age of 94. Beloved wife of Theodore Fibison, who survives her, they were residents of Watertown for much of their 74 married years together.

Elizabeth enjoyed a loving closeness with her three daughters, Deanne Scanlon of Chaumont, Wendy J. Fibison of Alexandria, Va., and Ellen Fibison of Ontario, and their husbands, the late Daniel J. Scanlon, Jr., Samuel J. Watson III, and James Saynor.

She is survived by her four grandchildren and her loving extended family: a niece and husband, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her position as the Secretary to the House of the Good Samaritan Hospital Administrator, Carlton B. Shannon, was professionally very rewarding for many years.

Elizabeth was a member of Watertown’s First Presbyterian Church, the P.E.O. Chapter AI, and the Hospital Twig Auxiliary. She was a dedicated volunteer in the early days of Hospice of Jefferson County.

Betty was cherished by many for her kindness and loyal friendship.

A private memorial service for the immediate family is being planned with the Rev. Dr. Fred G. Garry officiating.

Graveside service for Frederick J. LaFlair, 90, of Canton will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Fairview Cemetery, Canton followed by a Celebration of Life at the home of his son Andrew in Potsdam. Fred died on Friday, July 14, 2017 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital where he had been admitted earlier in the week.

Fred is survived by 14 children; Frederick LaFlair of Canton; Richard (Linda) LaFlair of Alvo, NB; Gloria (Bruce) Stevenson of Justin, TX; Margaret Chase of Fort Wayne, IN; Deborah (Andrew) Mason of Gouverneur; Douglas (Karen) LaFlair of Industry, PA; David (Carol) LaFlair of Fort Wayne, IN; Rebecca (Timothy) Facey of Weedsport, NY; ; Rowena (Michael) Merritt of New Port Richie, FL; April (Rafe) Sanson of Jacksonville, FL; Gwendolyn (Michael) Ridsdale of Cohoe, NY; Shawn (Heidi) LaFlair of Albion, NY; Shane LaFlair of Geoegia and Andrew (Rebecca) LaFlair of Potsdam. Also surviving are a sister, Joan Herzig of FL; 41 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and his ex-wife, Myra Karen Swan.

Fred was born March 14, 1927 in Utica, NY; the son of the late John and Evelyn (Laroue) LaFlair. He served in the US ARMY as Military Police. Fred married Veronica “Rita” Lawrence in 1944 in Copenhagen, she predeceased him on August 30, 1968. Fred farmed, drove feed truck for Agway and later had his own trucking company before going to work driving bus for NYSARC and CDP.

CHICAGO —Anthony “Tony” C. Gallagher, 54, of Potsdam, NY, formerly Chicago, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 9, 2017.

Tony was born on May 10, 1963 in Potsdam, the son of the late Paul and Lena (Bronson) Gallagher.

He graduated from Potsdam High School in 1982 and earned a license of cosmetology from BOCES. He was a hairdresser for 35 years and started his career in 1982 when he and his mother opened the hair salon, Hair to Please, in Potsdam. He later owned and operated Hair to Please and Parrot Day Spa in Potsdam, Leopard Hair Couture in Oak Lawn, IL in 2011, LMAPOW Salon in Chicago, IL in 2012, and Lollipops Treat Shoppe in Oak Lawn, IL in 2011.

Tony enjoyed his work and was often found working from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. to help his customers achieve their desired hairstyle. He also trained and received Hair America Artist status in 1994. He also loved to travel and visited places such as Paris and Mexico.

He is survived by his loving partner of 20 years, Kerry Kross; one son, Jeffrey (Amanda) Gallagher of Sherman, N.Y.; Judith Bates of Chaumont, N.Y. companion of 12 years and mother of son Jeffrey; and Katie (Ed) Snyder of Nassau, N.Y. who was like a daughter to him; two siblings, Joan Taylor of Potsdam and Joseph (Kathy) Gallagher of Potsdam; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Gallagher.

Keeping with Tony’s request, no funeral services will be held. A private memorial with family and close friends will be held at a later date.

Barbara was a devoted homemaker and also a devoted babysitter for 25+ years. Barbara was a communicant of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Norwood and was very active with the St. Philip’s Ladies Guild and the Order of the Eastern Star. Dateline: Saratoga Springs, NY

Jean R. Parry, 93, formerly of Woodlawn Commons, Saratoga Springs, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2017 at Wesley Health Care Center. She was born in Schenectady, NY to William and Addie Vandenburg Robinson on July 28, 1923. Raised in Booneville, NY she graduated Booneville High School. Following college, Jean worked at Revere Copper and Brass in Rome, NY during the war effort (WWII) and in the post war period. There she met her husband, John Parry.

After raising their family in Lyons Falls she and her husband built a summer home in Brantingham, NY .

Jean worked for the South Lewis Central School System in Turin, NY as the secretary to the District Principal, retiring in 1990.

In her younger years, Jean enjoyed horseback riding, downhill and cross country skiing. She was an avid golfer. Jean was adept at painting, molding ceramic sculptures, and had a good eye for refinishing antiques.

She was predeceased by John (1997) and by her brother, Donald Robinson and his wife, Rosemary.

Survivors include her son, Jeffrey Parry of Scotia, NY and daughters, Susan Parry of Walden, NY and Cynthia Parry of Helena, Montana; son-in-law Peter Strauss and daughter-in-law Lucy Parry; grandchildren: Caitlyn Joyce, Gwyneth Joyce, Michael Strauss and Jennifer Parry. She leaves behind her nephew, William “Bill” Robinson.

A graveside remembrance will be held on July 30th at 2PM at The Brantingham Cemetery.
