Mr. Milton E. “Bud” Skiff, age 82 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at his home while under the care of his family and Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley. Graveside services will be held on July 29, 2017 at 11 am at Beech Plains Cemetery. Bud is survived by his wife Elizabeth McNeil Skiff; a son Scott Skiff; daughters Marcia (Haõ) Doan, Laura Judy and Paula Skiff; a brother in law John Lyttle; sister Shirley Murphy; grandchildren Ryan and Jamie Skiff, Annabelle and Chase Judy, and Andra and Thanh Doan. He was predeceased by a sister Beverly Lyttle.

Mr. Milton E. Skiff was born on June 22, 1935 in Cambridge, NY to the late Chester Beatle Skiff and Dorothy Smith. He attended Greenwich, NY schools and was a graduate of Cornell University. He grew up on a family farm and took the farm over for a few years. Then he entered into ministry. His first ministry was in Prestonsburg, KY where he remained a few years. While there he was instrumental in leading the fundraising for a hospital for Prestonsburg. He then came back to the North Country and became the minister for the United Presbyterian Church in Lisbon. He also worked as a clerk at the First National Bank of Lisbon. He eventually took over as the bank president and CEO. He was very fond of the outdoors and loved reading and history.


Howard J. Forney

MASSENA – Mr. Howard J. Forney, 90, of 85 Nightengale Ave, Massena, peacefully passed away early Saturday morning, July 8, 2017 at his home.

Howard was born September 4, 1926 in Star Lake, New York, the son of the late Harry L. and Gladys (Spaulding) Forney. He was a graduate of Clifton-Fine Central School and proudly served his country in the US Navy. On November 22, 1956, he married Rose A. Meyers at the Ogdensburg Baptist Church, she predeceased him on June 30, 2004.

Howard was a crane operator for the Operating Engineers Local 545 in Syracuse until his retirement after 30 years of service. He was avid stock car racer and fan. Howard was also an active member of the AMVETS, American Legion, and VFW.

Howard is survived by his children, Harry Forney and his fiancé, Liz Brown of Massena; Stewart and Mary Anne Forney of Tennessee; and Theresa and Greg McAdam of Virginia; 7 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

In addition to his parent and wife, Howard was predeceased by his sister, Alice Meeker.

Friends may call Tuesday 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM with Rev. Rob Schirmer, Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Fine.

Linda L. Clark

Linda L. Clark, 68 of East Bethany, passed away on Saturday (July 8, 2017) at her residence under the loving care of her family and hospice.

She was born September 26, 1948 in Watertown, NY, a daughter of the late Robert and Betty Beuttner Gibbs.

Mrs. Clark was a Registered Nurse for the New York State Veterans Home in Batavia and a maternity nurse at Wyoming County Community Hospital prior to her retirement. She was an active participant in the Batavia Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Clark enjoyed gardening around her home and caring for her horses and will be greatly missed by all who knew her caring heart.

Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, T. John Clark of East Bethany. Son, Richard (Laurie) Clark of Fulton, NY. Two grandchildren, Joshua and Brianna Clark. Sisters, Christine Zimmerman of Ogdensburg, NY and Sarah Lynch of Fort Drum, NY. Brothers, Randy Gibbs of Rhinebeck, NY and Craig Gibbs of Alexandria Bay, NY. Half Sisters, Rachael Riordan of Adams Center, NY and Jennifer Rozell of Roswell, Georgia. Half Brother, David Gibbs of Theresa, NY. Also survived by step brothers, step sisters, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Gibbs.

Family and friends are cordially invited to share thoughts, condolences and fond memories on Saturday (July 15th) from 10am-12pm at the J. Leonard McAndrew Funeral Home, LLC, 2 Bogue Ave., Batavia, NY. A funeral service will commence at the conclusion of visitation at 12pm. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.

Mathew J. Glavin

CRANBERRY LAKE, NY - Matthew J. Glavin, the best-selling author of the Adirondack Treasure novels who died on July 9, 2016, after a long illness. Glavin was 61 years old.

Glavin was born July 15, 1953 in Syracuse, New York.

Glavin started writing just four years ago and published his first book, Adirondack Treasure - The Bonaparte Legacy in 2012. The book quickly hit the best-sellers list for Upstate New York and remains there to this day. In March of 2014, Glavin released his second book, Adirondack Treasure - Isle Royale, with co-author, Michael J. Dolan. Isle Royale hit the best seller list within months of publication. In 2014, the Adirondack Treasure books were the top two selling novels in New York State. Glavin was working on his third novel with Mr. Dolan when he passed away.

Glavin was a member of the Cranberry Lake Volunteer Fire Department and was the recipient of their ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award in 2014.

He is survived by his two sons, Christopher, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Sean, of Clarksville, Tennessee, and his wife, Stacy, of Kennesaw, Georgia.

A Memorial service will be held at St. Hubert’s Catholic Church in Star Lake on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Cranberry Lake Library, Highway #3, Cranberry Lake, New York, 12927.

James N. Finguerra, 67, of Clearwater, FL and Port Henry, NY, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2017 at Countryside Mease Hospital in Palm Harbor, FL.

Jim was born on Nov. 4, 1949, the son of the late James E. and Marie Diamonte Finguerra in Queens, NY. He graduated from LaSalle Military Academy in Oakdale, NY in 1967 and from Long Island University at Southampton, NY in 1971, earning a BA in education and psychology. He received his Masters degree from Plattsburgh State in 1975.

In 1971 Jim began a rewarding career in education, teaching grades 3-6 throughout his many years at Beaver River Central School in Beaver Falls, NY. He also was an adjunct instructor in psychology at Jefferson Community College in Watertown, NY, for several years, teaching nights and during the summers. Jim was an Odyssey of the Mind coach; he was very proud of the fact he and his co-coach, Loretta Keys, successfully brought their team to compete at the States level.

It was at Beaver River Central School that Jim met his soulmate, Maureen Currier, of Port Henry, whom he married on July 7, 1973 at the Port Henry Methodist Church. She also was a teacher, and the two retired together in 2004, having worked with elementary children for 33 years.

Jim loved teaching in part because he formed many strong, enduring friendships with his colleagues, and also because his students admired and respected him.

After Jim retired, he and Maureen became “snowbirds”, spending the summers in NY and the winters in Clearwater, FL.

Jim enjoyed traveling with his wife, having been to many Caribbean nations, as well as to Mexico, Europe, and Canada. Cruising was his favorite form of leisure travel. Jim also enjoyed playing Lotto games both in NY and in FL. He was quite lucky!

Jim was a past member of the Elks Club, the Croghan Lions Club, and the Croghan Fire Dept.

Family and friends were also an important part of Jim’s life, and he particularly loved visits from his grandchildren.

Jim is missed dearly by his wife, Maureen, of 43 years, his daughter Jennifer of Syracuse, NY, his son Jeffrey of Camden, NJ, and grandchildren Briana (Tom) Rose, Allison Williams, Austin Cripps, Lexy Spearance, and Conner Spearance, great grandchild Phoebe Rose, mother-in-law Ginger Currier, sister Janet (Edward) Haas, brother-in law Dale (Diane) Currier, 6 nieces and 5 nephews-in-law, as well as numerous cousins. He also leaves behind his adored “fur baby”, Chico.

Predeceasing Jim were his father-in-law Donald Currier and many aunts and uncles.

Jim’s family invites all his friends to attend his celebration of a life well-lived at Mt. Moriah Presbyterian Church in Port Henry on July 14, 2017, at 11:00AM.

Jeffrey Landy

Jeffrey Allan Landy, husband of Julie (Ludwig) Landy, 65, of Henderson Harbor died peacefully at home early Sunday morning after many months of courageously battling cancer.

Arrangements have been entrusted to North Country Cremation Service, a subsidiary of Cleveland Funeral Home.

Jeff grew up in Westminster, Maryland and graduated from Westminster High School with the class of 1970. He attended Frederick Community College.

Mr. Landy worked at Heagy’s Sport Shop in Westminster, Koontz Concrete in New Windsor, North Carroll High School and New Windsor Middle School for the Carroll County Board of Education. He was most recently employed with Jefferson Community College before his retirement in 2014.

Jeff is a former member of Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster and the Dug Hill Rod and Gun Club, also in Westminster. Jeff was most recently a member of the Henderson Fish and Game Club. Jeff was an avid fisher and hunter, he enjoyed taking friends fishing in all seasons. He especially liked fishing for salmon, pike, lake trout and brown trout. Over his lifetime, Jeff harvested more than 100 bucks. He also enjoyed hunting bear, turkey and small game. Jeff loved to sit by a campfire sipping a beverage with friends or go two-stepping with his wife.

Jeff was the son of the late William C. and Elizabeth M. Landy of Westminster, MD. He is survived by his wife Julie Landy and his step-son Kellen Christopher Woods, his brother William R. Landy and his wife Barbara of Linwood, MD.; nephews Ryan C. Landy and his wife Suzanne of Urbana, MD. and Michael W. Landy of Linwood, MD; two great-nieces Ava J. and Emma E. Landy of Urbana. Jeff was also survived by many close friends. Everyone who loved him will miss him dearly.

There will be a Celebration of Life at Ryan’s Lookout Restaurant, 9290 NYS Route 3, Henderson, NY from 2 pm – 6 pm on Friday, July 14, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jeff’s name to Hospice of Jefferson County or the Upstate Cancer Center.

BEVERLY OLIVER, Canton, NY/Fort Myers, FL¬¬–

BEVERLY OLIVER passed on June 26, 2017 in Fort Myers at the age of 85.

Born on October 8, 1931 in Watertown, NY, Beverly grew up in Canton, NY, where her parents ran The Eskimo (most recently Morgan’s Ice House) on the Town Green. Beverly attended Canton public schools before training in radiology in Toronto. On April 24, 1954 at the Presbyterian Church she married John Oliver III.

Beverly worked as a radiologist at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital, was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and a volunteer with the Girl Scouts and St. Lawrence County Historical Association. She enjoyed summers at her family cottage, boating and fishing on the St. Lawrence River. After John’s retirement, Beverly played golf and explored boating and fishing in Florida. Beverly volunteered in her Fort Myers community researching genealogy, teaching English to non-native speakers and knitting for charity events. Beverly and John traveled extensively, visiting six continents.

Beverly is predeceased by her husband John on April 16, 2016. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, John Oliver IV (SLU ’79) and Deidre of Niwot, CO and their daughters, Alexandra, Taylor and financé Ian Bishop, Lauren and spouse Andy Carlson and their three sons Ryan, Jake and Cade; her daughter and son in law, Amy Oliver Wesson (SLU ’80) and Fred of West Bath, Maine, and their sons, Thomas, Winsor and Daniel.

A service to celebrate Beverly’s life will be held on Friday, July 14 at 2:00 PM in the Evergreen cemetery in Canton. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Francis B. Moore, 102, Sherman St., Watertown, retired teacher in the Watertown City School District, passed away Monday July 10th at her home with her family by her side and under the direction of Hospice of Jefferson County.

Calling hours are scheduled for Wednesday July 12th from 4 pm - 7 pm at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. The funeral will be 11 am Thursday, July 13th at the funeral home, with burial to follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Rodman.

New York State Trooper Joel R. Davis, 36, of Evans Mills, died Sunday, July 9th, 2017 in the emergency room of the Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown from injuries suffered earlier in the evening in the Town of Theresa.

Visitation will be held Friday July 14th at the McGrath Gymnasium on Fort Drum with law enforcement personnel starting at 3 pm and the general public commencing at 4 pm - 8 pm. The funeral will be 1 pm Saturday July 15th at the McGrath Gym. Burial will follow in a cemetery to be determined.

Directions on entering Fort Drum for the services will be published with the completed obituary which will follow this notice.

The funeral service for Frances E. Moore will be 11:00am Thursday, July 13th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown. Burial will follow the service in Fairview Cemetery, Rodman. Calling hours will be at the funeral home from 4-7:00pm Wednesday, July 12th.

Frances passed away at her home Monday, July 10th where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County. She was 102 years old.

She was born in the town of Rodman October 4, 1914, daughter of Merritt and Ruth (Wilson) Brown. She was a 1931 graduate of Watertown High School where she was voted “class jolliest”. She then furthered her education at Potsdam Normal School for Teaching. Fran taught in the Watertown School District until her retirement in 1973.

She married Leon Moore July 11, 1937 at the Brown family home in Rodman. Mr. Moore passed away in 1981.

She loved family, friends, education, and keeping up on current events.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by 2 sisters, Isabelle Dryburgh and Thelma Thomas, and 3 brothers, Ralph, Richard, and Robert Brown.

Kay B. McKenney, 78, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Born August 15, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Irene Backus from Pyrites, NY. Kay was a National Honor Society student at Canton High School and graduated in 1957. She received a full scholarship to St. Lawrence University and majored in Biology and Chemistry, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in 1961. Her career began at the St. Lawrence County Medical Laboratory as a Medical Technician 1961. The following year she moved to Syracuse and joined Bristol Meyer Laboratories as a Research Scientist for many years. In 1979, Kay moved to Fort Wayne with her family where she was employed at Parkview Hospital as Lab Supervisor and later at Dupont Hospital as a Lab Director until her retirement. She was also a Mary Kay Consultant for many years and enjoyed helping women see their beauty inside and out. Her favorite pass time was spending time with her family. She very much enjoyed reading, playing bridge with friends, and spoiling her great-grandchildren. Kay had an amazing heart and touched everyone that met her. There is no replacing the “Queen” of the family and she will be greatly missed. Surviving are her two sons, F. Michael McKenney,lI, and Richard J. McKenney (Carrie) both of Fort Wayne. Also surviving is her best friend, Frederick Michael McKenney of Hilton, NY; 1 granddaughter, and 2 great-grandchildren who she loved deeply and saw often. Kay was preceded in death by her twin brother, Capt. Kenneth Backus who was killed in the Vietnam War in 1967. Kay’s Memorial Service was held Tuesday, June 27, 2017 in Ft. Wayne. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the Wounded Warriors Project. Per her wishes, the family plans to return her remains to the Backus family cemetery plot in Hermon, NY. These plans are pending at this time.

Diane Bates passed away at home on Wednesday, July 5th, after a brave battle with lung cancer. She was predeceased by her parents Kenneth and Ethel Williams and, sister, Mary Schafer. She is survived by her loving children and grandchildren. Diane will be remembered for her quick wit and her love for her family.

Robert Emerson

Mr. Robert L. Emerson, 74, of Sparrowbush, NY, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Monday, July 10, 2017 at his home with his devoted wife, Beth and youngest daughter, Kristen by his side. He was born September 25, 1942 in Potsdam, NY the son of the late Robert H. and the late Alice Gowell Emerson. He was predeceased by his brother in law, Russell Otto of Rio, NY as well as a handful of his nearest and dearest friends. He was predeceased by his loyal companion, Abbey, his Scottish terrier. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy, stationed in Port Hueneme, CA, where he received an honorable discharge on January 22, 1962. In 1972, while in Binghamton, NY, Bob met the love of his life, Beth, a nursing student and him, a Scuba Diving Instructor. Bob was the Building Inspector for the Town of Deerpark for 17 years; the longest amount of time held by one person in this position as of yet. He was very fond of his coworkers, and them of him. He was also a member of the NYS Builders Association. Bob was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as spending time on the lake near his hometown with his brother, David. He was truly Bob the Builder, as he was often seen on his property riding his backhoe and other various heavy machinery. He had a large collection of vintage snow mobiles, having 28 at one time. He enjoyed attending car shows and swap meets with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a car enthusiast, with focus on hot rods, antique and classic cars, having acquired numerous throughout his lifetime. The family urges and encourages ANYONE who will be attending the funeral, as in true enthusiast style, to bring your classic cars as a tribute to Bob.

Surviving are: His loving wife of 40 years Beth Koenig Emerson at home.

Grandchildren: Jeffrey, Anthony, Shiloh, Savannah, Victoria, Sara, William and Alexa. He had an especially close bond with his three youngest grandchildren, Ashley and Tyler Emerson and Leila Bennett, who lovingly called him “Poppy”. He also had one great grandchild. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Also his beloved dog Tiggy, his Cairn terrier.

Family and friends are welcome to visit at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Inc., 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis, NY 12771 on Saturday, July 15, 2017 from 12pm – 2pm. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 2pm at the funeral home with Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush, NY.

The funeral for New York State Trooper Joel R. Davis, 36, of Evans Mills will be 1 pm Saturday July 15th at the McGrath Gymnasium on Fort Drum with Rev. Christopher Carrera, Rev. Shane Lynch and Pastor Shane Ryan officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown.

Visitation will be Friday, July 14th from 3 pm – 4 pm for law enforcement personnel and from 4 pm – 8 pm for the public.

Access to the services on Fort Drum can be made through the 45th Infantry Division gate off Rt 26, crossroad Route 11 North, outside of Evans Mills.

Joel is survived by his wife Suzanne; their children Trenton, Caden, and Jaila; his parents Randy and Mary, Philadelphia; his brother Joshua and his children, Michael and Bella, Philadelphia; his mother-in-law, Debra Fults, Watertown and her mother Paula “Ma” Jackson, Evans Mills; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

He was born in Watertown, August 8, 1980, a son to Randy and Mary Cooke Davis. He graduated from Indian River High School in 1998 where he was active in several sports. He continued his love of playing sports upon entering Jefferson Community College. Joel remained very active in all localized sporting activities throughout his adulthood. Joel married Suzanne Fults on August 12th, 1999.

Following his education, he went to work at Roe Feeds in Philadelphia. He graduated from the Black River/St. Lawrence Valley Police Academy in 2003. He was a Jefferson County Sheriff for 10 years until attending the New York State Police Academy on November 26, 2012. He graduated from the Academy in May of 2013. Joel was stationed at the Philadelphia satellite at the time of his passing.

Joel served as the Commissioner of the Evans Mills Youth Baseball League and was active in all youth sports. He was currently an assistant coach with the Indian River Wood Bat Baseball team and was a member of the Evans Mills 500 Club.

He was a member and certified sniper with the Jefferson County Sheriff Department SERT team. He operated the Sheriff Departments boat and ATV and was a field training officer for both the Sheriff and State Police.

RELYEA - NORWOOD—A Mass of Christian Burial for 99 year old Mildred L. Relyea, formerly of Norwood, will be held Monday, July 17, 2017 at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Church in Norwood. Burial will follow the services at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam. Mrs. Relyea passed away on April 11, 2017 at the Capstone Center in Amsterdam, NY. The Buck Funeral Home in Norwood is serving the family of Mildred L. Relyea.
