Dr. Arthur C. Peckham, Jr., longtime resident of Watertown, N.Y., passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017 at RiverWoods in Exeter, N.H. surrounded by his family. Arthur was born January 25, 1944 in Watertown to Dr. Arthur C. Peckham, Sr. and Eileen Secoy Peckham. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1962, attended Hobart College and married Rebecca Marie Pfaff in June of 1966. He then graduated from medical school at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, did a year of internship in orthopedic surgery through the University of Iowa, served two years as a physician in the United States Navy in Bremerton, WA, and returned to Syracuse for residency to become a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. After his licensure he returned with his family to settle in Watertown, becoming a partner of the North Country Orthopedic Group (NCOG) in 1977.

It was his great pleasure to serve the North Country as a physician, practicing at both city hospitals and various community clinics in the tri-county area, particularly the North Country Children’s Clinics.. He said on retirement after 34 years at NCOG, “The most rewarding part of my career has been the opportunities I’ve had to interact with patients. The people are what matters.” He truly felt it was important to get to know each patient individually, and was full of both compassion and good humor for his patients, co-workers, friends and family alike.

Arthur was a devoted husband to Rebecca for 34 years, and a loving and involved father to his daughters and granddaughters. It was his great joy to be surrounded by family in Watertown both as a son dedicated to the care of his parents, dear brother to his sisters, and uncle to his nieces and nephews. He had a passion for American history including genealogy, historical medicine, military history and other research. It gave him great pleasure to share his love of history and exploration by travelling with family and friends throughout the United States to visit natural wonders and historic sites.

He was an avid sportsman, respectful of the environment both personally and through groups such as Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, Turkey Unlimited and the National Rifle Association. His love for the wild places in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties - from farmers’ fields to the St. Lawrence, Black and Moose Rivers; from the forests of the Tug Hill Plateau to the Adirondacks; from Lake Ontario to Brantingham Lake and Stillwater - knew no bounds.

He is preceded by his beloved wife of 34 years, Rebecca Pfaff Peckham, and his sister, Suzanne Peckham Maloney. He leaves behind sister Jeanne Secoy Peckham formerly of Watertown, NY, his daughters Heather Peckham Emerson of Salisbury, MA and Holly Peckham Wolfe of Somersworth, NH, and four granddaughters.

His family gathered for a private service at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Ducks Unlimited at 1-800-453-8257, to preserve the wetlands and wildlife he loved so much. Special thanks to the exceptional staff at RiverWoods for their compassionate care in recent years.

Mabel Reome, formerly of St. Anthony Apts., died peacefully at the age of 98 on August 3, 2017, at the Samaritan Keep Home where she had been a resident since June.

There will be no funeral per Mabel’s request, but there will be a Memorial service at a date to be determined by the family.

Born on December 8, 1918, in Arnold, Nottingham, England, to Francis and Lilyanne (Allcock) Mitchell, she was raised by Walter and Sarah Anthony. She was conscripted into the Royal Air Force as a WAF during WWII. While stationed at Bodington Air Base, England, she met PFC Arthur (Tom) Reome, stationed at a nearby Army Base. They were married July 21, 1945, in England. In 1947, she arrived in the US with their young daughter, Jill, to begin her life as a devoted wife and mother. She became a naturalized citizen in 1957 after the birth of their daughter, Robin. Although she loved being an American citizen, her heart was always true to her British heritage. She loved all things English! There was always that mantra that was heard by many…”just have a cup of tea and things will be OK.”

Her husband died in 1987, leaving a large void in her life, but the following year, she started a new adventure as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. She spent 5 days a week as a volunteer for 25 years until she became ill at 94. She then could only work 2 or 3 days a week doing what she loved most. The friends and staff at Meals became her “family” and she cherished all of them dearly.

Mabel thoroughly enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking and baking, and later in life loved watching the Food Channel and making meals and baked goods for friends and family.

Mabel is survived by daughters Jill (Ed) Hayes, Coatesville, PA and Robin (Paul) Paddock, Dexter, NY. Grandchildren, Stephanie (Doug) Kruszynski, Dallastown, PA, Sara VanLaeys and partner Brian McDaniel, York, PA, Matthew and Ryan Paddock, 2 great grandchildren, Jacob and Alex, and several cousins in England.

She was predeceased by her husband, parents, sister, Clarice Langham, brother George Mitchell and a great granddaughter who died at birth.

She was a communicant of Holy Family Church.

Contributions can be made to Meals on Wheels, 247 Factory Street, Watertown, New York, 13601.
