Joseph DeVincenzo

Joseph J. DeVincenzo DDS, age 73 of Potsdam, NY passed away on August 13, 2017 at the C.V.P.H. Medical Center in Plattsburgh, NY. There will be no services and arrangements for cremation are with the Garner Funeral Service. The family has planned a memorial celebration of Joe’s life which will be held at a later date at Sergi’s in Potsdam. Condolences online can be sent @www.garnerfh.com.

Joseph is survived by his daughters Rebecca Munn and husband Joe of Colton and Sarah DeVincenzo of Albany; grandchildren Colin and Charlotte Munn of Colton; a niece and two nephews. He is predeceased by his Father Patrick and Mother Rose DeVincenzo, a brother Victor DeVincenzo and a sister Bridget DeVincenzo.

Dr. DeVincenzo was born on February 9, 1944 in Newark, NJ. He attended high school in Union, NJ as a child. He then received his bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University in 1965 and his doctorate in dentistry from Georgetown University in 1972. He practiced dentistry in the Potsdam/Canton area for many years until he retired.

Joe was an intelligent, kind and generous man. A devoted father he enjoyed playing the blues on his guitar and conversing with his loved ones over good food and wine. He spent his free time compiling vast collections of movies, music and books which he referred to as a “collector’s dream” and logged endless hours playing chess.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley 6805 U.S. Highway 11, Potsdam, NY.

Carthage – Francis W. Potter, 54, of Boyd Road, Carthage, NY passed on Tuesday August 15, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, NY. He is survived by his wife Shannon Potter; two sons Justin and Michael Potter; brothers Welcome (Linda) of Carthage; Danny (Hope) of Star Lake; David (Christine) of Star Lake; James (Misty) of Carthage; Ronnie (Rhonda) of West Carthage; a sister Annette (Marc) of Star Lake; and a Sister in Law Jackie Potter; and several nieces and nephews. Francis is predeceased by his parents James and Anna (Largett) Potter; and a brother Raymond Potter. Francis was born March 31, 1963 in Carthage, NY to the late James and Anna (Largett) Potter. He attended Carthage Central School. Francis married Shannon Murdock on February 15, 1997, and worked as a truck driver for companies in the local area. Francis enjoyed hunting, fishing, driving, and most of all he was great at giving orders. A funeral service will be held on Saturday August 19, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, NY with Rev Samuel Lundy officiating. Robert Harrison Barber passed away peacefully on July 29, 2017 surrounded by his loving friends at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, CA. The memorial will be held on August 10, 2017 at 10am in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Colma, CA. Rob was born December 7th, 1963 in Watertown, NY to Wayne and Patricia Barber.

Rob graduated from Immaculate Heart Central High School in 1982 and continued his education at Cornell University. In 1986 he graduated with a BS in Applied and Engineering Physics and in 1987, an MS in Electrical Engineering. After graduating from Cornell, he headed out west to Fremont, California where he started work as an engineer at National Semiconductor. At night, he took courses at San Jose State University and graduated with an MBA. His career led him to Linear Technology, where he served as Director of US Operations, introducing efficient manufacturing processes such as 5S and TPM, and boosting production at its fabrication plants, before retiring.

Rob had many accomplishments and hobbies. He founded a yoga studio, Breathe Together Yoga, in Los Gatos CA, and offered free classes to cancer patients as a way to give back to the community. He was an entrepreneur and acted as an angel investor to a start-up. His hobbies included flying gliders, sailing, scuba diving, photography, music, cooking and spending time with family and friends.

Rob continued to live life to the fullest while battling a rare genetic disease with grace, dignity, determination, and strength. He is preceded in death by his mother, Pat, and wife, Melissa Wong. Rob is survived by his father, Wayne Barber of Watertown, NY, and his sister, Leanne Barber of Nashua, NH.

The Robert H. Barber Memorial Fund has been set up at Mayo Clinic. The family requests that memorial gifts be designated to Amyloidosis Research. Ruth Leger Rikard

Ruth Leger Rikard, 88, passed away on August 17, 2017 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Ruth was born in Gilboa, New York on August 30, 1928, the daughter of the late John Leger and Ruth Ridlon Leger. She graduated from Gilboa Central School and Roosevelt Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, New York as a Registered Nurse, and also from SUNY Oneonta with a Bachelors in Education. She worked at Bathgate Hospital in Stamford, New York, Margaretville Hospital and Community Hospital, Stamford, as a Registered Nurse, taught the nursing program at the Northern Catskills Occupational Center, and served as school nurse at Grand Gorge Central and Jefferson Central Schools. She retired as School Nurse Teacher from Gilboa-Conesville Central School in 1987.

Ruth was a member and past matron of Eastern Star in Prattsville and Windham as well as member and past president of Earl B. Dudley (Grand Gorge) American Legion Auxiliary. She also served as a girl scout leader for many years.

She married Arthur (Stub) Rikard on May 1, 1952. They celebrated their 50th anniversary shortly before he predeceased her in 2002. She is survived by her children, Valerie (Richard) Brainerd of Prattsville, NY, Ellen (James) Brenn of Palm Bay, Florida, Jean Monnen of Youngstown, NY, David Rikard of Prattsville, NY and Daniel (Lila) Rikard of Prattsville, NY as well as two of her five brothers, Raymond Leger of Titusville, Florida and Carl Leger of Montgomery, Alabama. She also has 13 grandchildren, Richard J. Brainerd, Stephanie Brainerd Tuomey, Michelle Brainerd, Megan Monnen Wahl, Amanda Monnen Fleming, Charles F. Monnen, Andrew Rikard, Anasatasia Rikard Salerno, Jamison Rikard, Samuel Rikard , Rebecca Rikard Carol Brenn Babicz and Andrea Brenn Braren. She also has 9 great-grandchildren, and was pre-deceased by great-granddaughter Ashlyn Fleming as well as three brothers, John Leger, William Leger and Paul Leger.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, August 20th beginning at 1 pm at Decker Funeral Home in Windham with a service to be held at 3 pm. Interment to follow at Gilboa Rural Cemetary.

The family would like to invite all to a reception celebrating Ruth’s life to be held at the Prattsville Hotel immediately following. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Prattsville Hose Company or Grand Gorge Hose Company.

WATERTOWN- Donald W. “Doodle” Fuller, 57, of Hilltop Towers Apartments, died Wednesday morning, August 16, 2017 at Samaritan Medical Center.

Donald was born on December 15, 1959 in Carthage, a son of the late Donald Fuller and Beverly June Arnold. His stepfather, Donald Gadbaw took on the father role, raising him from an early age. Donald graduated from Carthage High School, before entering the work force as a laborer. He was employed by Braman’s Manufacturing Company as well as other local contractors. A marriage to Shirley Cheal ended in divorce in the early 1990s. He then spent many years with a fiancée, Penny Bishop, who died many years ago.

He is survived by six children, Shawn Fuller of Lacona; Heather Fuller Allen of Lacona; Samantha Bishop of Brownville; Sherry, Lynn and Amber Fuller, all of Brownville; seven siblings, Roy McKnight and fiancée Jeanette Reed of Beaches Landing; John McKnight of Carthage; Jackie Fuller Aubin and Mike Aubin of Harrisville; Wanda Arnold of Natural Bridge; Scott and Billie Jo Gadbaw of Harrisville; Sherry Gadbaw Sears and Pete Sears of Carthage; a half-sister, Flossie Fuller; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his mother and father, as well as his stepfather, Donald Gadbaw, who raised him from a very early age.

All family and friends are encouraged to attend a memorial service at the Natural Bridge Community Center on Friday, August 25, 2017 at 4:00 PM with Pastor Frederica Webb officiating. Donations in memory of Donald “Doodle” Fuller may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Joyce M. Long, 85, formerly of Emerson St. and widow of Earl W. Long, Sr., passed away Wednesday afternoon in the emergency room of the Samaritan Medical Center. She had been a resident of the Samaritan Keep Home for over 5 years.

The funeral will be 8 pm Monday, August 21st at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Calling hours are from 2 pm – 4 pm and 6 pm – 8 pm prior to the service on Monday. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery for the convenience of the family.

Joyce is survived by her children, Earl Jr. (Cindy) Long, Florida, JoAnne (Dennis) Snyder, Watertown, Mark (Denise) Long, Watertown, Lori Paige, Burrville and Brian (Mark Landas) Long, Philadelphia; 16 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; a brother Alfred (Juanita) Davis, Jr, Watertown; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter Linda (David) Anderson, a son Wayne Long, a grandson Nichalas VanZelf, brothers and sisters, Gerald, Kenneth, Steven, Geraldine, Jenny, June and Mary.

She was born in Theresa, February 23, 1932, a daughter to Alfred and Laura Davis Davis, Sr. She worked as a nurse’s aid at the Jefferson County Home in Watertown before her marriage to Earl W. Long, Sr. on October 1, 1949. Following her marriage, she worked in the deli department at Loblaw’s Grocery store for a brief time. Joyce went to work as a cook at the Black River Valley Club for many years, retiring from there.

Joyce enjoyed Bingo, rummage sales, and crafts. Mr. and Mrs. Long enjoyed dancing and bowling with their neighbors for many years.

Carolyn M. Trombley, 75, formerly of Sackets Harbor and Dexter, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at Pontiac Nursing and Rehab Center, Oswego.

A funeral service will be held at Life Church of the Nazarene on Friday, August 25, at 1PM with Pastor Robert Tharp presiding. Private burial will be in Sanford Corners Cemetery, Calcium. There will be no calling hours and arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.

Carolyn was born in Watertown on November 8, 1941, daughter of Raymond and Ester Gordineer Gonseth. On March 19, 1960 she married Richard E. Trombley at Dexter Methodist Church with Rev. James Spear officiating. Mr. Trombley died September 30, 1997.

She had worked as a meat wrapper at Great American, a sales clerk at Hills, and in the seafood department at Price Chopper. She was a life member of Life Church of the Nazarene and volunteered with its vacation bible and Sunday schools. Carolyn was a former 4-H Leader and former member of the Glen Park Fire Dept. Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking but especially being a homemaker and raising her family while she worked. After taking art correspondence courses, she also enjoyed arts and crafts: painting, crocheting, knitting, greeting card making, counter cross stitch, and leather stamping.

Carolyn is survived by her son, Scott G. Trombley and wife, Pam, NC; three daughters, Sandra L. Earle and husband, Allen, Burlington, VT, Tracey M. Dumas, Dexter, and Kimberly A. Kostoroski and fiancée, Steven Hicks, NC; twelve grandchildren and several great grandchildren; brother, Theodore “Ted” Gonseth and wife, Terry, Sackets Harbor; sister-in-law, Cheryl Gonseth, Sackets Harbor; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with her husband, Richard, Carolyn was predeceased by her son, Phillip Getman, infant daughter, Rebecca J. Trombley, and brother (twin of Ted), Terry Gonseth.

Kevin B. Chase

KEVIN B. CHASE Formerly of Ogdensburg NY

Kevin went to Jesus on Monday, August 14, 2017, in Richland, Washington surrounded by his loving family. Kevin was born on May 3, 1962, in Ogdensburg New York to Frank Jay Chase and Hazel Evelyn (Forest) Chase. He attended Ogdensburg Free Academy in Ogdensburg, New York and graduated from high school in 1980.

He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Kevin was a Cannon Fire Direction Specialist. After his discharge from the Army, Kevin moved to El Paso, Texas for a few years before returning home to Ogdensburg, New York. Kevin made the long drive to Kennewick, Washington in 1999 where on December 20, 2003, Kevin Married Robin L. Kuntz.

After they married, they made their permanent home in Richland, Washington. Kevin loved performing his magic shows and was so good at it that he did a small show at one of the Dust Devil baseball games in the Tri Cities. He had the honor of throwing out the first pitch of that game.

Kevin loved working around the house and remodeling any room that needed it alongside his daughter Meghan. Kevin taught Meghan many carpentry skills along with so many other of life lessons. Kevin became an ordained minister in 2015 and was active in his church and would seen working around the grounds sprucing up the place.

Kevin will be missed by many. He was a friend to all and always had outrageous stories to share. Kevin is survived by his wife, Robin of Richland; one son- Robert Chase (engaged to Andrea Adams) of Ogdensburg, NY; three daughters- Jamie Chase of Ogdensburg, NY; Amber Chase of El Paso, Texas (stationed overseas in the Army) and Meghan Chase of Richland, WA; four sisters Sharon Reese Syracuse; Marsha Conover and her companion Mary Liverpool; Barb Green Ogdensburg NY; Crystal and Corky Hewitt Morristown NY; Two brothers Louis Chase and his companion Rose Catalano Ogdensburg NY; Charles and Patricia Chase Dexter NY; Preceded in death by his parents Frank and Hazel Chase; son Josh ; two brothers Terry and Paul

The Chase family will be holding a private celebration of life service for Kevin on Thursday August 24th , 2017; United States Army will conduct military honors. Thank you for all of your support and getting to know Kevin Chase before he passed on and is now with Jesus at this time.

Gouverneur - Leonilda “Jane” Gates, 97, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, August 22nd from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm with a funeral service at 1:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Fr. Shane Lynch, pastor of St. James Catholic Church officiating and burial with military honors in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur.

Leonilda was born on February 26, 1920 in Gouverneur, one of sixteen children of Claude and Agnes Shortt Gates.

Jane graduated from Gouverneur Dean High School and served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. She was a member of the 402nd ASF Army band. Upon her honorable discharge, Jane attended and graduated from Rochester Business Institute.

She worked at the Montgomery Wards catalog store in Gouverneur for 31 years and was the store manager for several years.

Jane lived on Williams Street all her life and was a member of the Gouverneur American Legion, served in its band, and often played Taps at military honors ceremonies. She also enjoyed studying genealogy, hunting, and fishing.

Jane is survived by her brother Claude R. Gates of Gouverneur, many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Claude H. Gates and Agnes Shortt Gates, her brothers Yale, Jerome, Paul Kenneth, and James Kermit “Bill” Gates, her sisters Vena Davey, Orpha Bennett, Ann Brown, Teresa Mary Butler, Mary Moran, Elenor J. “Betty” Gates, infant sisters Rita Gates, and Edith Gates.

Memorial donations in Jane’s memory may be made to St. James Catholic Church, 164 E. Main Street, Gouverneur, NY 13642.

MASSENA - Mr. Joseph M. Clopman, 70, passed away Friday morning, August 18, 2017 at his home in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Among his survivors are his wife, Marilyn; three sons, Andrew, Mark, and Nathan; his mother, Rose, and his sister, Miriam (Joe) Catapano.

A time of visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where his funeral service will be held at 5:00 PM. Burial will follow in Adath Israel Cemetery, Massena.
