pJerome J. Shelmidine Sr. “John”, 94 of 1468 Co. Rte 121, Mannsville, NY passed away Saturday evening, January 16, 2016 at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home, where he had resided for the past year./ppBorn August 19, 1921 in Lorraine, NY, he was the son of Carroll and Gladys (Schryer) Shelmidine. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Adams High School in 1940./ppHe served in the US Navy during and following World War II aboard LST 813, in the Pacific theater, from 1943 to 1947. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class./ppHe married Marion E. Alexander on April 12, 1943, and they celebrated their 72nd anniversary in 2015./ppJohn was employed by the NY Air Brake Corporation in Watertown following his service discharge, and then became a Rural Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service out of Mannsville, NY. He retired from this job after 26 years, in 1984./ppHe enjoyed carpentry, woodworking and working the land on the family farm, as well as camping and travelling. He has visited 48 of the 50 states along with several Canadian provinces, with his family, and for several years, he and Marion enjoyed wintering in Florida./ppJohn is survived by his wife Marion, Mannsville, and two sons John G. (Cindy), also of Mannsville, and Randy A. (Cathy) of Lorraine, as well as four grandchildren, William (Mary), Ellisburg; Andrew, Mannsville; Lindsay, Lorraine; and Christopher, a cadet at the US Air Force Academy, Colorado, and a great-grandson, James. He is also survived by a brother Donald (Donna) of Adams and sisters-in law Mabel, and Margaret Shelmidine Curtiss./ppHe was predeceased by a son, Jerome J. pRichard F. “Dick” Morris Sr., 84, Dorsey St., Watertown passed away at his home, in the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County, on Monday morning, January 18, 2016./ppCalling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Thursday, January 21, from 5 - 8PM and on Friday, January 22, from 10 - 11AM. The funeral service will follow on Friday at 11AM with Rev. Leon VanWie, pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, presiding. Burial will take place in the spring in Sanford Corners Cemetery, Calcium./ppDick was born in Watertown on April 30, 1931, son of Floyd C. and Hazel Tripp Morris and he attended schools in Watertown. On June 4, 1955 he married Rosemary F. LaGrow at St. Patrick’s Church./ppHe began working at Hardiman-Woolworth Furniture Store, Watertown. On October 27, 1950 he enlisted with the US Army Reserves and was later activated, serving with the Military Police at Ft. Hamilton in Brooklyn. He was honorably discharged on May 30, 1952. /ppAfter his discharge Dick worked for Carrier Corp, Syracuse for 3 years, then Knowlton Bros., Watertown for 17 years. After 20 years of service he retired as security guard at the Jefferson County Office Building. He was a member of American Legion Post 61. Dick enjoyed camping, gardening, feeding the birds, and especially gathering with his family./ppBesides his wife, Rosemary, he is survived by his 3 sons and their wives, Richard F. Jr. and Linda M., Ralph F. and Brenda, and Wayne C. and Keri, all of Watertown; 3 daughters and their husbands, Karen L. Smith and Dennis, Calcium, Cynthia R. Dummitt and Marty, Liverpool, and Cassandra D. Vallance and Mark, Watertown; 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, with a set of twins on the way; sister-in-law, Harriet Morris; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He and his wife are huge Elvis Presley fans. The couple even got the chance to see him in concert twice. pWilliam A. Prindle, Jr., 59, of Syracuse, passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the VA Medical Center. He was born on October 17, 1956 to William and Rita (Barkley) Prindle. While growing up in Syracuse, Billy was dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the status of Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 400. Billy graduated from Solvay High School followed by his entrance into the United States Army. After serving in the Army, he joined the United States Air Force achieving the status of Technical Sergeant. While stationed in Korea, he met his wife of 31 years; Yong Sun. Billy was a very creative, artistic, and spiritual person, with a strong interest in astronomy and he enjoyed his digital camera. His strong faith, sense of humor, and quiet chuckle will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him./ppBilly is survived by his wife, Yong Sun Prindle; parents, William A. (Frank) Schneider./ppHe entered the US Air Force in 1955 and trained as a firefighter in Denver, Colorado. /ppHe served in England and Germany until his honorable discharge in 1959 from his final station at Plattsburgh AFB. /ppHe married Marjorie Delight “Dee” Davison on April 25, 1959 at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Harrisville. Following their marriage, they lived in Appleton for three years before moving to Black River in 1962./ppMr. Schneider worked as a machinist in Watertown, first at Black Clawson for ten years, then at Fisher Gauge for five years. He went to work as a Civil Service firefighter on Fort Drum in 1977, retiring in 1997 as a Lieutenant. After retirement he owned and operated Elmer’s Limo Service for ten years./ppElmer was a Volunteer Firefighter for the Black River Fire Department and served as a past President and past Assistant Chief; he was a member of the Black River American Legion for 42 years; and an active member of the Concordia Lutheran Church in Watertown. Besides spending time with his family, he also enjoyed planting a large vegetable garden each year, hunting, fishing, wine making, and cutting fire wood./ppSurviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Clinton W. Schneider, Black River, Joseph P. and Jutta Schneider, Carthage, Douglas E. and Tracy Schneider, Carthage; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Sheila J. and Richard Bell, Colorado Springs, CO, Patricia S. Freas on June 16, 1951 in Philadelphia, PA. Mr. Freas worked for Motorola from 1971 up until he retired in 1989 as a product engineer manager. Upon his retirement the couple moved to Watertown in 1990. He died January 16, 2013./ppShe was a homemaker. She enjoyed music, crocheting, square dancing, needle point, and spending time with her grandchildren. Barton Hepburn Hospital, residential private duty and St. Joseph’s Nursing home until her retirement in 1980. She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral Parish and the A. Barton Hepburn Hospital Alumni Association./ppShe enjoyed her camp on the St. Lawrence River where she also constructed the sea wall herself, reading, praying the rosary every day, knitting, gardening, sailing, traveling and spending time with her family. pThomas Clayton Yerdon, 81, of Redfield passed away January 18, 2016 at his home. He was born March 5, 1934 in Syracuse, the eldest son of Clayton and Erma Yerdon. He was predeceased by both his parents as well as a brother, Perry./ppHe is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marylou, a sister, Suzanne (Roger) Leddy of Philadelphia, NY, two daughters and a son, Jan (Peter) Hathway of Long Lake, Lori (Mike) Russell of Pulaski, and Timothy (Carolyn) Yerdon of Redfield. Also five grandchildren, Joseph (Shelly) Hathway, Thomas (Keri) Hathway, Renee (Eli) Stawicki, Mark Russell, and Thomas J. Yerdon, as well as 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews./ppThroughout his life he worked as a welder at Carrier Corporation for more than 30 years and also at Schoeller Paper. He worked as a logger and a mail carrier as well. He also built and established the infamous “Tug Hill Diner” in Redfield which along with his wife, he operated for 11 years./ppTom enjoyed wood working in his garage and he was always happy to share a pot or two of coffee and a friendly chat with anyone that dropped by. pMASSENA: Bertha J. Fregoe, 82 of Town Line Road, Massena passed away on Monday, January 18, 2016 at her home, surrounded by the love of her family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley. Born on April 15, 1933 in Massena, NY the daughter of Edward and Ruth (Wood) Posewitz. She was a graduate of Madrid High School. She married Elwood W. Fregoe on September 13, 1952 at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Rev. Wilfred Nugent officiating. She was employed at Key Bank in Massena for over 20 years and retired from SeaComm Federal Credit Union. She was a member of the American Legion and AmVets Auxiliary along with the Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she volunteered at the gift shop. Bertha enjoyed bowling and spending time with her family. Surviving besides her husband of 63 years, are three sons, Michael and Patricia of Warrenton, MO, Patrick and Arlene of Louisville, Bruce of Massena, and two daughters Connie Fregoe of Lacona, Lori and James Nevers of Watertown. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a brother Donald Posewitz of Cicero. She was predeceased by her sister Florence Gaines.
