John Richard Scarlett, artist-blacksmith, poet, teamster, devoted Red Devils fan, avid canoeist, loving father, and friend, died Wednesday morning, September 13, at home with his wife Liz by his side, after many years living valiantly with the illness that took his life. His family and friends were looking forward to celebrating his 75th birthday with him on September 28th. They are all appreciative of the support Hospice provided in his last days.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Anne, sons John Rob and Mark William (Kim), daughter Amy Jo, granddaughters Shelyka, Karri, Katarina, and Summer, brother Mark Alan (Louise), all of Rossie and Hammond, grandson Cory of Edwardsville, sister Gwenyth Mary Troise (Carlo) of Seneca, South Carolina, and several much-loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Christopher, nephew Kevin Troise, and parents the Rev. John Renshaw Scarlett and Gwenyth Kathleen Scarlett.

John graduated The Manlius School in 1960 and the month after he graduated Hobart College in 1964, he and Liz were married. He earned an MA from Syracuse University the following year and subsequently taught English at the Manlius School and Monroe Community College. He moved with Liz and son Rob to Rossie in 1971 where he built a log home and lovingly raised his family, while working the land and sharing his talents and enthusiasm with an ever widening circle of neighbors and friends.

Under the tutelage of master blacksmith Ken Schwarz, he cultivated his own creative mastery of heat and iron at his Little Tree Forge and as an active member of the New York State Designer Blacksmiths Association. His talent was recognized in a ten-day exhibit of his creative work at the Thousand Islands Arts Center in Clayton, the dedication of the Burns Blacksmith Shop in his honor at the Hammond Historical Museum, and a TAUNY North Country Heritage Award that celebrated both his sustained commitment to his craft and his eagerness to share his knowledge and skill with others.

Over the course of 46 years on the farm in Rossie, he raised and trained 12 different teams of oxen to help work the land and haul sap for his Little Tree Maple Syrup enterprise. His devotion to Hammond sports also gained renown as his Mr. Basketball Head enthusiastically cheered on Red Devil teams through numerous championship seasons. Perhaps most enduring, after his love for Liz and their children, was his life-long passion for canoeing, especially in the backcountry of Algonquin Park where for more than 50 years he introduced his family and countless friends to the rigors and rewards of paddling and portaging that extraordinary landscape.

John was also an accomplished poet, having published two books; and he was working on a third at the time he died. Anticipating that his illness would eventually take its inevitable course, he composed his own obituary, dated January 31, 2015:

“John Richard Scarlett, born Sept. 28, 1942, passed this way, then that, until [September 13, 2017], when he definitely stopped passing. If you did not meet me at any point in your life and mine, then no list of memberships or awards or good deeds will bring you closer. A list of my mistakes and failures and missed opportunities would be more revealing. If you did know me as friend or relative, you know more than words can summarize. Fie on you airy obit.

“‘To die is different from what anyone supposed, and luckier. I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass. Look for me under your boot-soles. For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.’”—Walt Whitman

A celebration of life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 14 at the Hammond Presbyterian Church. Donations in John’s memory may be made to North Country Public Radio, John’s constant companion throughmany long hours in his blacksmith shop.
