Richard T. Naysmith, 65, of 10016 County Rt. 125, Chaumont, passed September 14, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, 117 N. Massey St., Watertown. The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the St. Vincent of Paul Cemetery in Cape Vincent. Born on October 23, 1951 in Philadelphia, PA, son of John R. Naysmith and Florence Lockridge, he graduated from Watertown high School. Following school he worked construction in the local area for several years. He then worked for Jefferson County Building & Grounds from 1998 and retiring in 2015. He married Nora P. McCarthy on March 2, 1984 in Kingston, Ontario. The couple resided in Watertown. She retired from the Jefferson County Building Code Office in 2015. Richard enjoyed building and puttering around the house. He was also a member of the Watertown Elks Lodge #496. Among his survivors are his beloved wife Nora P. Naysmith, Chaumont, a daughter and son-in-law, Victoria L. and Ryan C. Conlon, NC, a son and daughter-in-law, Kirk W. and Angela C. Anderson, Seneca Falls and three grandchildren, Liam, Makenzie and Ryleigh. A brother John Naysmith and a sister Shirley Naysmith passed before him. Helen passed away Thursday 9/14 with her beloved grandchildren at her side. Helen was born on 7/4/1930 in Standish, NY to Guy C. And Elizabeth (LaFountain) Coolidge. Helen’s father worked construction therefore she lived and attended schools in a number of places including Brainardsville,NY, Allentown,Pa. Star Lake,NY and finally settled in West Parishville,NY.
Helen graduated from Parishville Hopkinson High school and attended Potsdam State University and Syracuse University. She had a phenomenal work ethic. She started as a typesetter at the Courier Freeman. Then she pursued a career in health care, starting as a switchboard operator and ended her career in Health Care Administration. She started at Potsdam Hospital, worked at St.Lawrence Psychiatric Center, Mercy Hospital in Watertown, Upstate University Hospital and ended her career with Onondaga County Medical Examiners office and Public Health. She was a hard worker and saw every job as an opportunity and a challenge. She retired in her later years to her precious Siesta Key, Fl.. She carried on her work ethic at St. Michael’s Church in Siesta Key where she attended mass daily, served as an altar server and delivered communion to those that couldn’t get out. She was active in the Ladies Guild. She was also active in the Siesta Key condo association and her beloved Beachaven condo board.
She is predeceased by her parents, her brother who was killed in an accident while building the St. Lawrence Seaway, her husband Dr. Joseph Clifford and Lawrence (Bud) McKenna and her daughter Bobbi (Joseph) Brabant. Helen is survived by her sister in law Marge Slocum of Henderson,NY., her daughters Bonnie (Ed) Sharrit from Orlando; Deborah (Leo) Grant of Potsdam and her son Charles McKenna of Boston. Her sons in law Joseph Brabant and Bruce Kent. Daughter in law Sheri Hewitson. Her grandchildren Katherine Smith of Fort Drum, Christine Sharrit of Orlando. Michelle (Mike Morse) Kent; Sarah (Gerald)Yette and Christopher (Michelle McMahon) Kent all of Potsdam; Andrew McKenna of Seattle, Wa.; Matthew (Maggie) McKenna of Potsdam and Jeffrey Brabant of Austin Texas. She has 9 great grandchildren who she adored.

Adelbert S. Rice
Adelbert “Del” S. Rice, 96 years of age and a resident of the area for more than thirty years, passed away on September 12, 2017, at home while under the care of his loving family and Hospice. Del was a World War II Veteran, and employed by St. Regis Paper Company for over forty years, retiring as a Regional Safety Manager.
The son of the late Adelbert E. and Lucy Rice, Del was born in January 1921 in West Carthage, New York. He was predeceased by his wife, Priscilla “Peg” Rice.
Del was a kind, humble man who enjoyed spending time with beloved family. His hobbies included golfing, woodworking, bowling, genealogy, music, movies, and traveling. He was respected by all who knew him and touched so many lives. He was truly our “hero” and the “wind beneath our wings”.
He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge #1762 and The American Legion Post #789, the Firemen’s Association of the State of NY, Winthrop Society, as well as several other organizations.
Survivors include his daughters: Dorothy “Dot” Davis of Bradenton, FL and Christine Harriett of Washingtonville, NY; his five grandchildren: Lynn and husband Artie Jefferies, Lee Davis and fiancé Patty, Sharon and husband John Mabee, Susan and husband Stephen Elter, Pete and wife Amanda Davis; ten great-grandchildren: A.J. and Allison Jefferies, Codie, Jacob and Macie Davis, John, Gary and Danielle “Dani” Mabee, Stephanie and Christopher Elter, and Jordyn Davis; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Del was predeceased by his ten brothers and sisters; as well as his son-in-law, Gary L. Harriett.
Visitation will be on Saturday, September 16, 2017, during the hours of 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., located at 139 Stage Road, Monroe, New York 10950. Military Honors will take place during the wake service.

Norman H. Griffith, 86, formerly of Burnup Road, Black River, passed September 15, 2017 at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where he had been a resident.
Calling hours will be 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. The Order of the Eastern Stars followed by the Masonic Lodge will have a service beginning at 7 p.m.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wed., Sept. 20 at the funeral home with his nephews David Rivers, Executive Director of Elim Christian Resort and Conference Centre and Kevin Kitto, Lay Leader of First United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will follow at the Black River Cemetery.
He was born on December 14, 1930 in Watertown. He attended school in Glen Park.
Following school he served in the US Marine Corp. for a short time before being honorably discharged. He then worked for Coughlin Printing Co. in Watertown for 34 years.
He married Wilma Jones on December 9, 1978 at the Black River Baptist Church. The couple resided in Black River.
He was an active member of the Watertown and Black River Masonic Lodges for over 60 years and a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars #343 in Black River.
Among his survivors are his beloved wife, Wilma Griffith, his sister in law, Nina Rivers, NC, nieces and nephews, David (Marlene) Rivers, Peterborough, Ontario, Floyd (Kathy) Rivers, Glenfield, Rick (Lynn)Rivers, Lacona, Terry (April) Rivers, Adams, Marietta (Kevin) Kitto, Sackets Harbor, Rebecca (Joseph) Lambert, NC, and several great nieces and nephews.

Anne Carol Dievendorf Ashley
Anne Carol Dievendorf Ashley, age 69, of Cashmere Court, Rochester, NY, passed away peacefully following a long battle with cancer on Friday, September 15, 2017, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Watertown, NY on October 24, 1947, she was the daughter of Charles and Veronica Dievendorf. On June 28, 1969, she was united in marriage to Bill Ashley at St. James in Gouverneur, NY, by Rev. Paul Oahler and Rev. George Easter.
Her husband; daughter Veronica of Penfield, NY; daughter Kate and her husband Joseph Manahan and their children Claire, Benen, and Nolan of Manlius, NY; two brothers, Lynn of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Charles of Malone, NY, survive her.
Anne was a 1965 graduate of Gouverneur Central High School and received an associate degree in dental hygiene from Farmingdale College on Long Island in 1967. She worked for Dr. Michael Yunker and other Rochester dentists for over thirty years. She was an active member of Church of the Holy Spirit in Penfield.
Anne enjoyed the outdoors, especially summers at the family camp at Sylvia Lake, Fowler, NY, and was an avid gardener, but most of all she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a firm believer in faith, family, and friendship and will be greatly missed and long remembered by family and friends.
A memorial gathering will be held at Green Funeral Home in Gouverneur 1:00 P.M.-2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, September 19, to be followed by interment in St. James Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance (www.ocrfa.org).
James Donald Wood
Myrtle Beach, S.C: James Donald Wood, 68, passed away at Conway Medical Center in Conway, South Carolina September 13th.
James Donald Wood was born September 15, 1948 in Potsdam, NY, a son of Margaret (Briggs) Wood and the late Kenneth Wood. He attended Canton Central Schools, and graduated from Hugh C. Williams High School in 1966. Jim graduated from the State University of New York at Canton in 1968 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He continued his studies at Clarkson University in Information Systems and Computer Technology.
Jim was also a veteran in the US Army Reserves, where he served honorably for six years. He was a long-time member of the Bricklayers Local #81 in Ogdensburg, NY. Jim went on to become a Certified Data Processing Manager and worked in this position for 34 years at Reynolds Metals Company of Massena, NY (now Alcoa).
Jim married Cheryl Frank in 1970 in Canton, NY. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, and their daughter, Alyssa (Wood) Johnson and her husband, Frankie Johnson, all of the Myrtle Beach, SC area. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, all of California. In addition, Jim is survived by his mother, Margaret Wood, of Canton, as well as his brother, Joseph Wood and wife Bonnie of Canton. and their children. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Wood and wife Laurie, and their children, Tyler Wood of Canton as well as daughter, Emiley (Wood) Thacker, her husband, Joseph,, and their daughter Avery, also of Canton. Jim also leaves behind a brother-in-law, James Frank Jr. and Carla Frank of Canton, and their children, James Paul and Ashley. Additionally, Jim is survived by brother-in-law Larry Frank and wife Laura of Canton, and their sons, George and Ethan.
During his career, Jim was a member of the Canton Lions Club, the Massena Flying Club, and St. Thomas Moore Catholic Newman Center. Following his retirement, Jim and his family moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where he was a member of the Myrtle Beach Elks Lodge and attended St. James Catholic Church in Conway. He was a partner for the past ten years in Tri-City Surface Coating Company, where he specialized in decorative concrete.
A memorial service will be held Monday, September 18, at 10:00 a.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Canton, NY. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.

Anna was born on October 16, 1921 at home in the Town of Croghan, a daughter of the late Walter and R. Lena Nuspliger Hirschey. She attended country school one mile from her home on the Second Road, and graduated from Beaver Falls High School. Anna worked for her parents on the family farm, and worked for Climax Manufacturing in Castorland prior to her marriage. She married Embert C. Marolf at the Boonville Methodist Church parsonage on December 6, 1946. The couple worked for Anna’s parents on the family farm, and until purchasing the farm in 1955. Together with her husband, the couple owned and operated the dairy farm for many years.
Anna was a member of the Beaver Falls Grange, Pamona Grange, State and National Granges for many years. Also, she was a member of Riverbank Singing Needles. She enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, reading and sewing.

Donald passed away Friday, September 15, 2017 at Canton Potsdam Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born October 13, 1930 to Kenneth and Leah Dygert Champney. A graduate of Potsdam Central School, Don enlisted in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict, attended the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and repaired jet aircraft engines at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. After his honorable discharge, he worked at Clarkson College and later for the Village of Potsdam, retiring after 20 years, as a groundsman, as well as repairing water meters and parking meters.
He married Carol Berger on November 16, 1957 in Rensselaer Falls NY, and they made their home on the Old Parishville Road in a house that they built themselves. The couple ran Champney’s Greenhouse in the 1960’s and later Don turned his interest to beekeeping, selling beekeeping supplies as well as honey for many years. He was an avid gardener, as well as a skilled woodworker.
Don is survived by his wife Carol, his daughter Kathryn (Mark) Mulkin, twin grandchildren Megan and Matthew (Emma) Mulkin, and two great grandchildren, Blake and Charlotte. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Leslie and Douglas, and a sister, Gwendolyn.

Helen Randall Dunstone, 95, of Wildway Road, Gladstone, Va. and formerly of Potsdam, N.Y., died Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Aiken and Thomas E. Dunstone. Born in Syracuse, N. Y., on October 2, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Helen Wright and George Minnis Randall. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Potsdam, N. Y. and the Eastern Star. Helen was a retired bookkeeper for C. B. Sherman and Sons. She is survived by a daughter, Jayne Enochs and husband, Henry of Gladstone, Va.; two sons, Donald E. Dunstone of Huntsville, Ala. and Robert L. “Larry” Dunstone and wife, Becky of Liverpool, N. Y.; a brother, Donald Emerson Randall of Pioneer, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; one sister, a daughter-in-law, Mildred Dunstone; a son-in-law, Mario Luongo; and her beloved dog, Heidi. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Her sister Linda Mandigo and her grandchildren, Michael Lane, Shannon Lee, Justin Whatley, Tiffinee Harvey, Samantha Johnson, Stacie Johnson, Fred “Paul” Woolen Jr, Joshua Woolen, James Kanady, Jared Lamaine, Caitlyn Lamaine, Jason Turcott, and Heather Riggs. Her great grandchildren, Avery Andrew, Gunner, Nolan, Jude, McKenzie, Layne, Vincent, Temperance, Vaughn, Painter, Sunny, Zander, Aspen, and Jencie. She was pre-deceased by both parents, Charles Belcher and Florence Blauvelt, her stepmother Mabel K Belcher and sadly, her son John Calvin Lane Jr.
A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church at 11:00 am with the Rev. Steve Parks officiating. The calling hours for Elizabeth “Betty Jean” J. Ligammari, 85 of 23682 Swan Rd. Watertown, NY are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at TLC Funeral Home, Inc. Phyllis Merkley
Norwood: Phyllis M. Merkley, age 74, passed away peacefully early Friday morning (Sept. 15, 2017) at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. As per her wishes, there will be no public calling hours or services. A graveside service will take place in Madrid Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The family has entrusted arrangements with the Phillips Memorial Home, in Massena.
Phyllis was born to late Arnold E. and Rose (Gilbeault) Welch in Ogdensburg, NY on Jan. 12, 1943. She attended and graduated from Madrid-Waddington High School in 1961. She was married to Bill Merkley that later ended in divorce. A truly caring person, Phyllis found her calling in life by helping those around her, working as a Developmental Aide for Sunmount retiring after 30 years in Madrid, NY. She was a loving mother who enjoyed being surrounded by friends and family. Phyllis was a talented artist and an avid golfer, who could be found spending time at the Casino and making time for lunch and conversation with her co-workers and friends. Traveling and being outdoors, Phyllis made time to appreciate all that the world had to offer. She will be missed by all those who had the honor of being a part of her life.
She is survived by her two loving sons, Scott G. Merkely of Norwood, NY and Michael John Merkley of Daytona, FL. She is also survived by her sister, Jane and husband Pat Portolese of Massena, and a brother Richard and wife Phyllis Welch of St. Petersburg, Fl. Sisters in-law, Joan Welch of Massena, NY, Chrissy and Phil Colby of Norwood, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her siblings Dr. Allen A. Welch, Barbara Erwin, Arnold “Joe” Welch and Carol Moore, and companion Phil Lynch.

Thomas Tanuis
BRASHER FALLS- Thomas N. Tanuis, 72, of 895 Maple Ridge Road, peacefully passed away on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the Massena Memorial Hospital. Thomas was born May 20, 1945 in Torrington, CT, son of the late Samuel and Nellie Liner Tanuis. He graduated from Wamogo Regional High School in Connecticut where he was active with the Future Farmers of America. Thomas was a member of the Grange. He was hard worker and loved to work, running his dairy farm and also working construction. He enjoyed farming, raising animals, gardening, and woodworking. He also liked to watch tractor pulls and stock car races. He is survived by his siblings, Irene and William Barron of Brasher Falls; Carol and Daniel Allaway of Anniston, AL; Daniel and Susan Tanuis of Brasher Falls; and Samuel and Barbara Tanuis of Litchfield, CT; his sister-in-law, Debbie Tanuis of Massena; many nieces and nephews; three great nieces and one great nephew. Besides his parents Samuel and Nellie, Thomas was predeceased by his brother, Ralph S. Tanuis; and his sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Robert Waugh. There will be no calling hours or visitation. Nancy Ball
Newark/Clayton- Nancy Yvonne Ball 81, of Newark joined the Choir in Heaven with her beautiful singing voice. She Passed a away at her home on September 15 after a long illness. She was under the care of her loving husband Ora and Hospice of Wayne and Seneca Counties. Nancy was born on May 10, 1936 in Watertown, NY, the daughter of Frederick and Beatrice (Carr) Countryman. She graduated from Watertown High School at the age of 17 in the final January graduation in 1954. While still in high school Nancy worked part time for a doctor in the Woolworth building doing secretarial work. She also worked for Westinghouse. Later jobs included the 1000 Island Bridge Authority, Alexandria Bay Hospital as an Administrator, Hospice of Jefferson and St. Lawrence County and as Activities Director for Samaritan Keep in Watertown.
In 1958 she married George L. Waterson who passed away in 2008. Nancy loved to sing and was active in many choirs over the years, sometimes directing. She was sought after as a soloist and often sang duets with her close friend Helen Ingerson. She was a member of Northern Choral Society of Watertown when they went on tour singing in England and Wales in 1992. In 2014 she reconnected with her high school sweetheart Ora P. Ball and they were married in November of that year at the River Community Church of Clayton where Nancy was a member. Survivors include her loving husband, Ora. Her son Russell (Annette) in Brooksville Florida; brother Dennis P. Countryman in Kingston, NY; sister Rev. Jane E. (Clark) Wagner of Harrisville, NY; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Nancy is predeceased by her mother the Rev. Beatrice Carr Clark and step father Vernon H. Clark(Pop); her son Jeffery Waterson; a sister Patricia Countryman, and a brother Rev. Joseph L. Countryman.
There will be a celebration of Life at the Lyons United Methodist Chuch on Wednesday, September 20th at 11 A.M. with Rev. Dr. Patience Kisakye presiding. There will also be a service at the River Community Church of Clayton where Nancy was a member for many years on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. Burail at a later date at the Riverside Cemetery on Wellesley Island. Arlene Jones
Arlene M. Jones, 66, Watertown, passed away on Sunday, September 17th at her home under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County. The funeral service will be 11:00 am Thursday, September 21st at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Brookside Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 20th from 6-9 pm.
Arlene was born on November 28, 1950 in Carthage, a daughter to Donald and Nellie Babcock Clearo. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1967. Arlene married Daniel Jones September 13, 1968, in Black River. Mr. Jones died December 26, 2002. Arlene retired from Fuccillo Ford as a sales person after 21 years of service, while employed there she had the opportunity to go on cruises which she enjoyed. She also enjoyed reading, playing bingo and spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Clifford (Christina) Jones, Watertown; Tracy (Jerry Segouin) Cramer, Dexter; Michelle (Leo) Booras, Watertown, 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, a sister, Rosemary Clearo, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was predeceased by her brother, Donald Clearo. Donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St, Watertown, NY 13601.
