On September 3, 1955, he married Charlotte Bosse in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Massena. Fred attended LeMoyne College prior to his entering the United States Army during the Korean War. He served for 16 months in Korea. Upon completion of his military duty, he attended Clarkson University, graduating in 1958 with a degree in Industrial Management. He worked at Reynolds Metals Company while earning his Master’s Degree in Education from St. Lawrence University in 1963.
He joined the faculty at Brasher Falls Central School in the fall of 1963, in the History Department and taught until his retirement in 1988. Following his retirement, he worked for the St. Lawrence County office of Economic Development as the Summer Youth Employment and Training Program. He served in this position for nine years.
Fred was very active in local and St. Lawrence County politics. He was elected a Village of Massena Trustee in Massena in 1968, pledging to investigate and report to the Village Board on the feasibility of establishing a municipal electric power system for Massena. The report concluded that very positive results would occur if Massena were to establish a consumer-owned power company. His study became the cornerstone of a 13-year struggle to establish the Massena Electric Department with the takeover of Niagara-Mohawk in May of 1981. He had served as a member and Vice-Chairman of the Massena Electric Utility Board for many years.
He served a total of five years on the Village Board of Trustees and two terms on the St. Lawrence County Legislature prior to his retiring from active politics. He was a trustee and former member of the Sacred Heart Parish Council for many years.

Fred and Charlotte wintered in Palm Bay, Florida for 26 years. He enjoyed golf and was an avid woodworker. He made many pieces of furniture for his children and grandchildren, everything from jewelry boxes to china cabinets, hutches, armoires, trestle tables, pantries, dry sinks and many other family keepsakes. He also enjoyed oil painting and traveling. Fred was especially proud of his family and enjoyed the many activities that his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren pursued.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice, who provided comfort to the family in his final hours, and to the Alzheimer’s Association, in support of his childhood sweetheart and wife, Charlotte.
