CHIPMAN — Richard “Dick” I. Martin, 73, passed away peacefully Thursday October 12, 2017 at UVM, Burlington, VT surrounded by his loved ones.

Family and friends are welcomed to call the Philips Memorial Home, Waddington, on Tuesday October 17, 2017, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held Wednesday October 18, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at the Scotch Presbyterian Church in Chipman, with Pastor Rick Sinclair of Madrid, NY officiating. Burial will take place immediately following services at the New Brookside Cemetery in Waddington, NY.

Born on July 23, 1944 to Willis I. and Margaret Lucille (Goldie) Martin in Ogdensburg, NY, Dick attended and graduated from Madrid-Waddington Central School in June 1962. Richard worked alongside his father as a third generation Dairy Farmer, later taking over the family business in partnership with his brother Roger Martin.

Dick was joined in loving union with MaryAnne Dupray on January 20, 1973 at The Scotch Presbyterian Church with Rev. Stephen Doughty, Minister and Rev. Harold Skelly, Priest presiding. Together they have seven children that they raised on the farm. Dick was proud of his children, sending each of them to college and watching them grow and excel in their professions.

Dick enjoyed working with his hands. In his younger years he took leisure in woodworking projects and renovating the family farm to accommodate his growing family. He enjoyed reading, being outdoors in nature, and spending time with his children taking family hikes, attending school sporting events, and vacation time.

Dick retired from farming in 2008. Dick was a quiet, gentle man with strength of character, integrity, and community spirit. In his retirement he missed the rhythm and reward of farm work but enjoyed the freedom to visit his children.

Dick is survived by his wife of 44 years MaryAnne Martin, his children, Jennifer Martin of Baltimore, MD; Joseph and Nicole Martin and their children Kennedy and Owen of Mendon, NY; Jesse and Sarah Martin of Waltham, MA; Elizabeth (Martin) and Ryan McKnight of Milton, VT; George Martin of Syracuse, NY; John Martin of Syracuse, NY; and Alexandra Martin of Madrid, NY. Dick is also survived by his siblings Joan (Martin) and Jim Dashnaw of Black Lake NY, and Roger and Nancy Martin of Madrid, NY; and nieces.
