MASSENA — Mr. Benjamin “Benjie” G. Cappione, 92, of Beach Street, unexpectedly passed away on Friday morning, October 20, 2017 at Massena Memorial Hospital.

Benjie was born on July 27, 1925 in Massena, the son of the late Amedeo Sr. and Philomena (Bronchetti) Cappione. He was the fifth of nine Cappione children and graduated from Massena High School in 1943. At 18 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and proudly served his country while being stationed in the infantry in Germany. Upon returning from the war, he went into the family business, A. Cappione Inc., with his brothers and continued the valued family legacy until his retirement in 1986.

Benjie leaves behind a sister, Loretta “Wella” Opalka of Massena, and four brothers, Samuel A. and Lee Cappione, Francis P. “Bucky” and Mary, Amedeo Jr. “Hag” and Sue, Joseph P. and Sally Aubertine. He is also survived by 22 loving nieces and nephews ... and his “chosen son” David Mainville.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Michael “Picky”, two sisters, Connie “Constance” Wing and Barbara “Baba” Sharlow ... and loving friend of 70 years, Joyce Robinson.

As much as Benjie loved to “move around” in his travels, he also loved Massena dearly. He was a member of the Massena Elks, VFW, and American Legion, a lifetime member of the Italian American Club and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church. He was definitely a man for all seasons, and his interests where as varied as the man. Integrity and character were intrinsic to his nature, which explains why his repertoire of friends drew no boundaries... all ages and all walks of life. He treated friends like family and family like friends. Benjie’s generosity and heart went hand and hand ... and if there was a need ... EVER ... he was always there to help.

Horses were his passion, and he was known in every track from Yonkers to Hialeah to Saratoga. There was no bet left unattended by Benjie. And he was a consummate card player ... whether it was playing a raucous game of Briscola at the Italian American Club ... or counting every single card as a master Bridge player. He was ready for every card game you threw his way. Benjie lived his life how he wanted to ... his way. His zest for life was contagious and it embraced all who knew him. The epitome of the word “Gentleman” was exemplified by Benjie ... and along with that ... he was a gentle man.

Friends and family are invited to call on Monday, October 23, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Church in Massena presided by Rev. Mark Reilly. Benjie will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.

Those wishing to express acts of kindness may do so to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
