Beverly Anderson Zabka, 88, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, died on October 20, 2017 surrounded in love by her family.

She was born in Taylor, North Dakota to Herman and Ivah (Unumb) Leutz, joining older brother Leon. After graduating from high school in 1947, Bev attended college at the University of Colorado and then pursued her passion for teaching in Florida, where she met and married her first great love, the late Emil Anderson, in 1956. The pair built a life together, which took them to Tennessee and New York State prior to their retirement at Lake of the Woods in Locust Grove, Virginia. After Emil’s passing in 1992, Bev continued to pursue their shared passions, including golfing and church activities - hand bells and choir.

Her participation in the L.O.W. choir brought into her life a second great love, her late husband John Zabka, with whom she traveled and enjoyed numerous social activities, adding to her happiness in many ways. Though their time together was short, the love between them is remembered fondly and gave Bev many happy memories.

Her optimism and ever-open heart then led Bev to spend several years with the companionship of her third love, the late Ed Vaughn. The pair enjoyed spending time with family and participating in all ‘The Lake’ had to offer.

Mrs. Zabka is survived by her son Steve Anderson (Susan), daughters Gayle Thyrring (Michael) and Karen Anderson (Brian Mahoney), and step-daughters Lisanne Zabka (Michael Tait) and Rosanne Zabka. She will be fondly remembered as an amazing Grandma by Mark Thyrring and Katelyn Kirste (Eric), and “Grandma Bev” to TJ Cioffe, Richard Cioffe, and Nicole Cioffe. She was so very proud to be Great Grandma to Caroline Kirste and leaves behind a large extended family and countless friends.

Her family would like to thank Ms. Lisa Seglem, who was her caregiver, angel, and friend; as well as the amazing staff at Chancellor’s Village for their love and care.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Lake of the Woods Church, Locust Grove. Burial will be private at Culpeper National Cemetery, Culpeper, VA.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Ave, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.

Kenneth Charles Rishel passed away peacefully on October 22, 2017, at his home in Watertown. He was 70 years old.

Kenn was born in 1946 in Utica, NY, a son of Lois and Lester Rishel. He married Leslie Anne Syposs on December 30, 1967 in North Tonawanda, NY. Kenn graduated from SUNY Oneonta with a Bachelor’s Degree in education and eventually completed his Master’s Degree in education from SUNY Cortland. In his early years, Kenn held various jobs in the education field including President of Teachers Union in Holland Patent, NY and elementary teacher and principal of General William Floyd Elementary School in Stittville, NY. Kenn moved his family to Carthage in 1981 when he became the Assistant Superintendent of Carthage Central Schools. Kenn earned his Certificate of Advanced Studies in 1985. Kenn was appointed Superintendent in 1987 and continued until 1996. He loved this job and treasured the students, his colleagues, and helping the community.

He was a member of the Carthage Area Hospital Board for many years. This position directly led to his appointment as CEO of the Carthage Hospital from 1996 through 1998. After leaving the Carthage School System, Kenn ultimately went back to his first love and became a professor of Education at SUNY Oneonta. With little fanfare, Kenn retired in 2015 after being involved in education for over 50 years.

Kenn loved animals! He and his wife Leslie would visit a farm of rescued donkeys, mules and horses every trip to Oneonta. He would photograph these animals and annually gift his family with calendars highlighting his favorite pictures. Kenn also has owned many sweet guinea pigs throughout his life. He leaves behind one of his favorites, “Noodles”, named by his beloved grandson, Lucas Fiorentino.

Lucas became a very important person in Kenn’s life. Kenn loved to listen to Lucas read him stories. They had fun watching movies together, including Fantastic Beasts and Star Wars, discussing school work, watching cute animal videos, and enjoying meals together. Answering an endless amount of questions from a curious 8-year-old was something Kenn relished!

Kenn also enjoyed the following: 50’s and 60’s music, Elvis, Leonard Cohen, old radio programs, Art’s Jug Pizza, conspiracy theories (especially Bigfoot & Aliens), historical documentaries, Thanksgiving Dinner, magic, naps, books on CD, David Sedaris and British Crime Programs.

He is survived by his cherished wife of 50 years, Leslie, his very favorite older daughter, Samantha Rishel and his favorite youngest daughter, Andrea Rishel Fiorentino, her husband, Matthew Fiorentino and their son, Lucas. Also surviving Kenn are his sister, Judith Carbone and her four sons and his brother, Jon Rishel.

Kenn would like to be remembered as someone who truly valued education and hard work but loved a good nap! Kenn suffered from depression for many years and would like people to know that this is an illness not to be ashamed of, but instead something that must be battled too, just like cancer. Kenn was kind, compassionate, smart, and very funny. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A special thanks to the many doctors and nurses who showed so much kindness and compassion.

Hospice was pivotal in helping him enjoy his last few months. They are an amazing organization.

Calling hours will be on Monday, October 30th, from 4-7 at Reed and Benoit Funeral Home. There will be no funeral service, as per his request.

Condolences may be made online at www.reedbenoit.com

Carl Allen Lofberg Born September 4, 1953, deceased October 22, 2017.

Carl would have written this on a yellow legal pad, in bullet format.

Carl was inherently made to care for others, to gauge if he was capable of helping you, to steer you in the best direction he could (whether you asked for his advice or didn’t have the wherewithal to ask). God bless you if you were caught in his crosshairs. His curiosity and empathy were his best qualities.

He adored his family, and he loved bringing people toward the water. He lit you up with his smile and a joke when it felt like a situation was too much. He led. To his immediate family, extended family, and colleagues: honor him with selflessness. Take time to think about others, and take time to act on those thoughts.

Carl was born in Winchester, Massachusetts, to Robert and Verlie Lofberg. He graduated from SUNY Maritime College. He worked for the Exxon Corporation as First Mate on a ship along the Alaskan Coast before earning his MBA in entrepreneurial studies from Babson College. After graduation he worked in commercial real estate for R.W. Holmes.

Carl married Shelley Jones on April 25, 1981. In 1985 they opened their first Arby’s restaurant in Watertown, New York. They had plenty of fun together before and while opening four more Arby’s and two Papa John’s restaurants and having their sons, Schuyler and Garth.

Carl is survived by his wife, Shelley; sons, Schuyler and Garth; and family members, Stephen Lofberg, Jeanne Koscuik, Evelyn Jones, Bradley Jones, Mary Jean Jones, Merritt Jones, Sydney Laite, Morgan Jones, Christine Lofberg, John Koscuik, Joanne Lofberg, Paul Belanger, Emily Suraci, Katie Belanger, Andrew Koscuik, Kevin Koscuik, Thomas Lofberg, Michael Lofberg, Joseph Lofberg.

He is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Verlie; his brother Robert; and his sister Brenda Belanger.

His family was everything to him.

A memorial service will be held, noon, November 4th at Concordia Lutheran Church located at 818 Arsenal St., Watertown, NY. Memorial donations may be made to either Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center at P.O. Box 5028, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5028 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
