Evelyn E. Curtin, age 82, of Shelton, formerly of Watertown, NY, beloved wife of the late Robert Curtin and the late Russel Baker, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 26, 2017 at the Hewitt Memorial Health Center. Born in New York City the daughter of the late Ludevit and Ethel Hlubik, she was raised in the Bronx and had lived in Watertown for many years prior to moving to Shelton. Her first job was working at Macy’s in New York City, and after settling in Watertown, she became employed in the Admissions Department at Good Samaritan Hospital. Following her retirement, Evelyn enjoyed working in the Sewing Department at the Walmart in Watertown. She loved sewing and spending time on the Saint Lawrence River in Clayton NY and in Sackets Harbor on Lake Ontario. Survivors include her beloved son, Steven R. Baker and his wife Kelly of Fairfield; three step-daughters, Katherine Curtin Plunkert, Susan Curtin, and Barbara Curtin; four grandchildren, Margo and Lola Stoverchy and Molly and Hannah Baker, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Jennifer Stoverchy and a sister, Olga Thompson. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 160 Hill Farm Road, Fairfield with the Rev. Mark E. Christoffersen officiating. Formerly of Clare-

Susan M. Hundley, 57, of Merritt Island, FL and formerly of Clare, NY passed away Oct. 15, 2017 at Cape Canaveral Hospital with family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. Born February 7, 1960 Sue attended Knox-Memorial Central School in Russell, NY and moved to Florida in the 1980’s. She was a seamstress at SeaRay Boats where she made many dear friends along the way.

Susan is survived by her parents Joyce and Edson Clothier and by her sisters Barbara Hundley, Mary Butterfield, Terrie Clothier and Sara Charpentier and their families, along with many Aunts, Uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Susan was predeceased by her father Elwyn Hundley.

Sue loved animals of all kinds, collecting gemstones and sharing recipes. She will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved her. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Somerville – Charles R. Mousaw Sr., 81, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2017 at his home.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 4th at 1:00 pm at the Gouverneur Community Center, 4678 State Hwy. 58, Gouverneur. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Charles was born on July 15, 1936 in Gouverneur, the son of Francis and Bessie Clark Mousaw.

He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1955 and married Shirley Halford on October 30, 1955 at St. James Catholic Church, Gouverneur.

Charlie was a business agent and president of the Local Painters Union #925 until his retirement in 1992.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of several clubs including the Rainbow Rod & Gun Club, Gouverneur Rod & Gun Club, Black Lake Fish & Game Club, and Gouverneur Pheasant Club. Charlie also belonged to the Gouverneur Elks Lodge, the DADS of the Gouverneur VFW, and enjoyed rolling the dice or playing a hand of cards.

He is survived by his children Debra Morehouse of Somerville, Charles Mousaw Jr. of Tampa, FL, Thomas Mousaw of Colorado Springs, CO, Paula & Jeff Stump of Payson, AZ, Linda & Jeff Dahl of Phoenix, AZ, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Charlie is predeceased by his wife Shirley who passed away in 2014, his parents, and his brothers Francis and Donald Mousaw.

Gouverneur – Anita Mae Hayes, 85, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Gouverneur Hospital.

Memorial donations in Anita’s memory can be made to the Gouverneur Vol. Rescue Squad, PO Box 164, Gouverneur, NY 13642.

Anita was born in Ogdensburg on May 30, 1932, the daughter of William and Genevieve Kio Papineau.

She graduated from Gouverneur High School and lived most of her life around Gouverneur and in South Carolina.

Anita married James Edward Hayes in 1975. Mr. Hayes, a retired Army veteran, passed away in 1986. Anita was previously married to Hilton LaBow.

She worked at Howard Johnson’s Hotel in Watertown as well as South Carolina. Anita also worked at Shoney’s and a German restaurant in South Carolina and the Roma Restaurant in Gouverneur.

Anita was a member of the Gouverneur American Legion, the Gouverneur VFW, and the Red Hats. She enjoyed bowling, creating water color paintings, collecting hats, watching old movies, and spending time with friends and family.

She is survived by her chidren Richard and Susan LaBow of Richville, George and Connie LaBow of Elmdale, Linda Killmier of Oregon, Joe and Barbara LaBow of Hailesboro, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Anita is predeceased by her parents, her husband, brothers William “Bill” Papineau, Richard Papineau, James, Robert, and David who died in infancy, sisters Irene Papineau, Lucille Richardson, June Shattuck, Genevieve Young, and Rita Absalon, and a granddaughter Jeri Lynn (LaBow) Love.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 2nd from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Fr. Shane Lynch, pastor of St. James Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Florence National Cemetery in South Carolina.

Clayton;

Mr. Richard (Dick) L. Matthews, age 74, of Cantwell Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 29th, at the Samaritan Medical Center, where he had been a patient for a short time.

There will be a Celebration of Life starting at 6pm on Friday, Nov. 3rd, at the Knights of Columbus on James Street in Clayton.

Dick was born March 30, 1943, in Clayton, the son of Perl and Rhoda Jackson Matthews. He attended Clayton Schools.

He served in the United States Army from January of 1963, until he was honorably discharged in January of 1966.

On January 9th, 1965, he married Christine Thornton at the Methodist Church in DeKalb Junction.

Dick worked for over 40 years at St. Lawrence Restoration, restoring antique boats.

He was member of Dodge Hall.

Dick enjoyed antique tractors, putting around in his garage, woodworking, his airboat, which he built himself, ice skating, and raising hell with his brothers.

Surviving besides his wife Chrissy, is a son Jim, and a daughter Maggie Matthews both of Clayton; three grandchildren, Taylor, Morgan, and Dane; one brother, Stan of Oswego; his mother in law, Beverly Conklin; nieces and nephews.

Three brothers, James, Gene, and Gary, and two sisters, Cara Carnegie, and Carol Brown, all died before him.

LOWVILLE — Elaine F. Bush Click, 69, of Valley View Courts, formerly of Croghan, passed away Friday afternoon, October 27, 2017 at University Hospital, Syracuse.

A funeral Mass will be said at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Golisano Children’s Hospital, 1 Children’s Circle, Syracuse, NY 13210 or Lewis County Humane Society, P.O. Box 682, Lowville, NY 13367.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Kimberly and Ronald J. Rowsam of Lyons Falls, Hubert R. Jr. and Kimberly Click of New Bremen, Jessica and Travis Edwards Sr. of Croghan; two grandchildren, Haile Rowsam and Caleb Click; three step-grandchildren, Joshua McBroom, Travis Jr. and Tiffany Edwards;

four sisters and their husbands, Patricia Wormwood of New Bremen, Sandra and Ray Moody of Croghan, Joanne and Michael Meyer of Croghan, Wendy and Tim Reed of Carthage; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband, Hubert Ray Click Sr., who died on March 9, 1991; two brothers, Robert J. and Richard P. Bush, and a sister, Jean Porreca.

Mrs. Click was born on July 7, 1948 in Lowville, NY, a daughter of the late Richard L. and Margaret D. Corbo Bush and attended Father Leo Memorial School. On December 14, 1968, she married Hubert Ray Click at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan. Elaine raised her family and worked as a CNA at Lewis County General Hospital for many years, until her retirement.

She was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, and watching television. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Grant P. “Red” Callahan, of Henderson, passed away on Monday, October 30th at his residence. He was 78 years old.

Calling hours will be held at Carpenter Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville on Saturday, November 4th from 3-5 pm.

Grant was born in Malone, NY on October 1, 1939 the son of the late George and Catherine Strack Callahan. Grant served in the Army National Guard and worked for Kodak in Rochester, NY as a welder retiring in 1991.

He married Judith Williams, September 2, 1961 in Rochester, NY. They lived most of their married life in Rochester, and then moved in 1995 to their current residence in Henderson.

Grant, known by many as RED, loved his family, the outdoors, hunting, fishing and helping other. He enjoyed working his land and woodcraft, building many wonderful red cedar pieces that he was very proud of. Many of Red’s cedar works were donated to Hospice and local church.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy, 3 sons, Michael (Kim) Callahan, Conn; Timothy (Ana) Callahan, Rochester; Daniel Callahan, Rochester; 3 grandchildren, Timothy (Julie) Callahan, Jr., Ashley (Dave) Valley, Mikayla Corey, 2 great-grandchildren, Molly Marie, Michael Mathew and his brother, Gabe Callahan.

Besides his parents Grant was predeceased by his 6 siblings.

Donald Wallace Rutherford, 81,of 13811 Co. Rte. 63, Adams, passed October 31, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11a.m. November 4th at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home 117 N. Massey St., Watertown. Followed by military honors at the funeral home.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 3rd at the funeral home.

Son of Winfield Scott Rutherford and Hazel Irene Dumas, Don was born July 26, 1936 in Waddington, NY.

Donald attended schools in Waddington and Watertown. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1957 after serving two years with the National Guard. Don continued his service with the U.S. Army doing a tour in the Korean War. Afterwards Don reenlisted into the 479th Army Reserve as a combat engineer mechanic in the 98th Division.

Our father was a hard working, dedicated man. Along with his military career he held many positions throughout his life. He met his wife Sonja while working at Pine Cleaners. They were married October 22, 1960 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Watertown.

Later on after starting a family Don worked as a custodian for the Watertown School District. He also held 3 or 4 part time jobs while working at school.

Don was also a member of the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years.

Don was a quiet man with a heart of gold who always put the needs of others before his own. He was dedicated to his work and devoted to his family.

He was involved in the Boy Scouts, martial arts and sporting events with his children. He was an avid jogger who also enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, gardening, westerns and war movies. Besides enjoying time with his family he loved his dog, Chico, home-cooked meals and sleeping in whenever possible.

Besides his parents Don is predeceased by his wife Sonja and two brothers, Robert Rutherford and Chucky Brewer.

Among his survivors are six children; Amy Rutherford, Lori Rutherford, Debbie Rutherford, Irene ( Dale) Adams, Carol (Rick) Kohl, Donald S. Rutherford, 9 grandchildren, William (Chelsea) Hazelton, Megan (Andrew) Martin, David ( Ricky) Kohl, Thomas Leroux, Ashley Hazelton, Brenna Berkey, Seth and Asia Rutherford, Cheyenne Adams; 8 great grandchildren, Tatum Sharpe, Vincent and Cameron Workman, Zoey and Zane Gardner, Connor and Chase Hazelton and Chance Bumpus. a half brother, John Brewer, several nieces, nephews and his cat Mofat and his dog Chico.

Linda J. Woods, age 74, resident of Adams, formerly of Pulaski passed away Monday at Samaritan Keep Nursing Home in Watertown. Linda was born May 23, 1943 in Carthage. She was employed by Whispering Pines Nursing Home in Watertown. Linda was a member of Christ Our Light Parish in Pulaski.

Surviving are one son and two daughters. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard K. Woods.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday November 3rd at the Reed and Benoit Funeral Home, 632 State Street, Watertown, with burial in Brownville Cemetery. A calling hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the funeral.

Betty is survived by a son, Jerry and JoAnn DeShane, Franklinton, NC; eight grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren, a brother, Sterling and Gloria Trimm, Ft. Jackson and her nieces and nephews. Betty was pre-deceased by her husband Jerry DeShane in 1988, a son Herbert in 2010, a daughter, June Hill in 1995 and her three brothers and four sisters. Born in Norwood, NY on March 30, 1923 to the late Herbert and Iva Page Trimm, Betty graduated from Norfolk High School. She married Jeremiah DeShane on April 19, 1941. Betty was a homemaker and worked at several diners and restaurants in the local area for many years. She enjoyed cooking and feeding people, knitting, crocheting, reading and entertaining people. HAILESBORO – Elaine Grace Boney, age 92, passed away Wednesday afternoon, November 1, 2017 surrounded by her loving family at the Claxton Medical Center, Ogdensburg, NY.

Elaine Grace was born to Claude and Hazel King Tuttle, Hailesboro, NY August 4, 1925. She was the youngest of six sisters, Evelyn, Ruby, Ethel, Freida and Marion.

Her first marriage ended in divorce. She married Francis Boney August 26, 1957. Mr. Boney passed away in 1976. She had a companion, David Johnson, for over 20 years.

She worked at W.T. Grant Co. and was also employed at the Fowler School cafeteria. She worked for thirty years as a housecleaner for several area residents and took pride in her work.

Elaine belonged to several organizations including the Promenaders in Gouverneur, NY and the Skirts and Flirts of Canton, NY, the Thousand Islands Girl Scout Council and was a forty-year member of the TOPS NY 219 chapter of Fowler. She was a member of the Methodist Church, E.J. Noble Hospital Auxiliary, and belonged to the Gouverneur Citizens and Hermon Dekalb Club. She was also a Hailesboro News correspondent for the Gouverneur-Tribune Press for over thirty years.

During WWII she volunteered for the Aircraft Warning Service as a civilian spotter to keep watch for enemy planes entering American airspace.

She was an avid walker, gardener and baker for family and friends, especially known for her delicious bread, donuts and chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed square dancing, reading, travel and her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her five sisters, husband Francis Boney and companion David Johnson and her granddaughter, Bonnie Fuller and her son-in-law, James Fuller.

Surviving are daughters Cynthia Fuller of Fowler, NY, Sue Ellen Caswell of Waddington, NY and Clayton Boney (Linda) of Hilltown, Pennsylvania. She had five grandchildren: Bonnie Fuller, Barbara Fuller Finnie (Bill), Trudy Caswell-Ryan (Robert), Tina Caswell Johnson (Daniel), Troy Caswell (Ruth) and her ten great-grandchildren, Cory and Christy Fuller, Jennifer and Alyssa Ryan, Nicholas and Eric Johnson, Brandon Finnie and Parker, Aspen and Mason Caswell, and great-great grandchildren, Hollie and Logan Trombly and Zachary Fuller and many nieces and nephews.
