Stephen K. Watrous

Stephen K. Watrous, age 69, of Canton, died Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at his home while surrounded by his family.

Stephen was born May 3, 1948, in Cortland, NY. The son of the late Norman K. & Bernice L. (Rankin) Watrous, he graduated from Groton Central School in 1966. After high school, he worked for Smith Corona Typewriter Company in Groton, before meeting in his wife-to-be, Linda L. Evans. With the Vietnam War still going on, Mr. Watrous enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was a member of the 25th Infantry Division. Before heading overseas, he married Linda, June 8, 1968, at Canton United Methodist Church by Rev. Calvin Zimmer. Steve left immediately after, and served from June 12, 1968 to June 12, 1970. He was wounded in combat and received a Purple Heart.

Stephen returned to the North Country after the war, where he lived the rest of his life with his wife, to whom he was married for over forty-nine years. He worked primarily in the dairy industry for many years, beginning as a cheese maker in Heuvelton and Ogdensburg before being promoted to a supervisory position at Universal Foods. After leaving that position, he spent the rest of his working days as a logistics manager for Allied Federated Co-op in Canton, before retiring.

Surviving are his wife, Linda of Canton; two sons, Keith (Anastasia) Watrous of Chandler, AZ and Greg (Jeannie) Watrous of Mebane, NC; two brothers, Alan J. (Bonny) Watrous of Brooksville, FL, Gary L. (Kathy) Watrous of Groton, NY; a sister, Susan M. (David) Downes of Cortland, NY; four grandchildren, Kaylie & Mekenzie Watrous and Lainey & Josephine Watrous; and several nieces and nephews.

Stephen was a member of the American Legion Post 800, Groton, NY. He loved sports. He liked watching the Yankees, the Giants and the Syracuse Orange. He was an avid coin collector and liked playing cards, especially when he won! But most of all he loved and cherished time with his family.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 4th from 10 am to 12 Noon at Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 21 Park Street, Canton. The funeral will follow at 12:15 PM (for any who choose to stay) at the funeral home with Chaplain Robert Schirmer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Canton.

Bruce W. Ashcraft, Jr.

Bruce W Ashcraft Jr., 47, of Pensacola, Florida passed away suddenly in his home on Friday October 27th, 2017.

Bruce was born in Carthage NY June 15th, 1970 to Tamara (Dening) Miller (Carthage) & Bruce Ashcraft Sr (Black River). Bruce graduated from Carthage Central High School in 1988. He was very proud of his time serving in the US Air Force from 1991-1997 including time in the Presidential Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery and at the White House.

He enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and especially loved the time spent with his Husband Mark, and their two dogs (Tori & Avery). He had a passion for music and singing at his church, Holy Cross Metropolitan Community Church in Pensacola.

He is survived by his husband Mark Everett, mother, Tamara Miller, father Bruce Ashcraft Sr (Carol Moseley); brother Ronald (Anne) Ashcraft of Scotia; sister Katherine (Gregory) Hayden of Fulton; sister Denise (Rodney) Olaen of Lacey WA; sister Kellie Petrie (Justin Lavancha) of Adams; sister Jamie (Robbie) Meyers of Adams; brother Andy (Danielle Ladd) Ashcraft of Adams; brother Michael Ashcraft of Adams; sister in laws Pam Everett, Peggy (Neil) Todd, Paula (Jim) Adams, and brother in law Scott Everett. Bruce is also survived by many step sisters, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bruce is preceded in death by his step father Lyle Miller; maternal grandparents Milton & Marta (Makuch) Dening, paternal grandparents George & Dora (Mono) Ashcraft, his father and mother in law Frank B Everett Jr and Margery (James) Everett and his great niece Madden Katherine Hayden Ladd.

Funeral services will be held at the Bezanilla McGraw Funeral Home on Monday, November 6th at 1:00pm with Rev. Donald A. Robinson officiating. Calling hours will precede the services from 11:00am until 1:00pm on Monday.

Kakwirakeron Bear Clan

On the early morning hours of October 31, 2017, Kakwirakeron, beloved husband of Verna (Cooper)Montour, began his journey back to the spirit world. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Kakwirakeron was born Arthur B. Montour on June 26th, 1942 in Buffalo, NY. He was the eldest brother of Johnny, Judy, Eric, Keith, and Patricia Montour.

Dear father of Wendy, Kathy (Shawn), Barry (Barb), Lynn, Jay (Courtney), Stacy, Mary, Mike (Wendy), Sugar (Bruna), Tekahonrake (Marisa), Teyonienkwataseh (Ray Lynn), Thanaokate (Amber), Iohahiio (Sakonohontsiawi).

He enjoyed spending time with his 59 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents Belva and Martin, a brother Keith, his first wife Sandra Jacobs, his son Steve Cooper, two grandsons Cory and Isaac, and one great grandson Gionni.

Kakwirakeron spent his childhood in Kahnawake. He started ironworking at the age of 17 and spent his working years traveling the country. He worked as a foreman and superintendent, building bridges and high rises with the Local 361 out of Brooklyn, NY.

In the early 1970’s, he became actively involved in the Warrior Society and was involved in the Kahnawake Evictions. As a spokesperson, he was deeply involved during the Moss Lake and Ganienkeh Land Reclamations. Kakwirakeron also traveled to Switzerland and Holland as part of the Haudenosaunee Delegation to the United Nations in 1977. He was involved in the standoff in Racquette Point in Akwesasne in 1979. In 1989, he was tried on Federal R.I.C.O. charges for stopping an FBI raid in Akwesasne. He served 10 months as a political prisoner. Kakwirakeron stood up for his beliefs and for his people without hesitation. His legacy carries on with his family.

In 1994, Kakwirakeron entrepreneurship and drive lead him to start the Kanienkehaka Lure Company and had distribution deals with large companies including Wal-Mart and Bass Pro Shops. In the late 90’s, he stood against the violation of sovereignty as he fought the New York State taxation of gas and cigarettes in Haudenosaunee communities. He was arrested on Highway 81 in Onondaga and counter sued the NYS police for excessive force and was awarded a settlement 20 years later. He believed strongly in our autonomy to trade tobacco and operate native owned businesses.

Kakwirakeron spent his later years spending quality time with his wife, Verna. He enjoyed connecting to the land through golfing, fishing, and being on his farm in his gardens. He looked forward to spending time with his horses. Kakwirakeron created a beautiful and strong family that surrounded him with continuous love. He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor to know him and were made stronger by his teachings.

Kakwirakeron will return to his home at the farm in Bombay (556 Quain Road) on Thursday November 2, 2017 to be joined by his family from 2 pm – 5 pm. Friends and public may begin calling at 5 pm in Bombay until Friday.

On Friday, November 3, 2017, Kakwirakeron will return to Kanonsesne at 2 pm for community viewingand continues throughout Friday night until the funeral. The Funeral ceremony will be held at Kanonsesne on Saturday November 4th at 11 am with Atehroniatakon officiating. The family would like to invite friends and loved ones to a traditional meal to follow at the Farm in Bombay.

Phyllis E. Meacham

MASSENA- Phyllis E. Meacham, 86, of 22 Talcott Street, peacefully passed away, Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family.

Phyllis was born on June 18, 1931, in Massena, daughter of the late Albert and Dacey Pike McDonald and attended Massena Central Schools. On May 27, 1950 she married Lelland Meacham. Lelland predeceased her on July 11, 1984.

She was a homemaker, who cherished her time with her family. She had a natural green thumb and enjoyed gardening, bird watching, NASCAR, cats and horses. Phyllis was also an avid collector of Beanie Babies.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Robert L. Meacham of Massena; Betty and Michael Smith of Norwood; Linda Rufa and Shawn Abrantes of Massena; and June and Scott McWharf of Cranberry Lake; 13 grandchildren, Christina Phillips, Michael and Marci Meacham, Cody and Patrick Smith, Amber Sovie, Adeleina, Nicolea, and Joseph Rufa, Bonnie-Jean LaPradd, Heidi Summers, Roxanne LaPradd, and Braydon McWharf; 15 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren; her sister, Mildred and Donald Mossow of Massena; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Phyllis was also predeceased by a son, William A. Meacham on June 14, 2016; a granddaughter, Tara Smith on April 3, 1998; and a sister, Opal Kaherl-Keir on April 12, 2001.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Saturday from 3-6 PM, where a funeral service will be held at 6:00, with Pastor Rachel Jordan officiating. A graveside service for Phyllis will be held Sunday at 2:00 PM at Fairview Cemetery in Brasher Falls.

Memorial donations may be made in Phyllis’ memory to Massena Humane Society and Hospice of the St. Lawrence Valley.

RAYMONDVILLE— A Celebration of Life for 64 year old Donald T. McGregor, a resident of 8755 St. Highway 56, Raymondville, will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Norfolk American Legion in Norfolk. Donald passed away on October 31, 2017 at home. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, Raymondville; a son, Donald Jr., Chicago, IL; his daughters, Bobbie Jo Wells, Helena; Susan McGregor, Massena; Aimee McGregor, Chicago, IL; his step-children, Jason and Jaylene Dow, Chase Mills; Corey Dow, Massena; Donald Trevor Dow, Massena; several grand and great-grandchildren; his brothers Paul and Shirley McGregor, Raymondville; Ronald and Tina McGregor, Massena; a sister, Jean Barclay, Madrid as well as several nieces and nephews. Donald was pre-deceased by his parents, a daughter, Jennifer McGregor, a brother Edward McGregor and a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Villnave.

Born in Potsdam, NY on October 21, 1953 to the late James T. and Catherine McCarthy McGregor, Donald graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School and attended college. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1972 and served both active duty and in the reserves for many years. He operated the Army Reserve Center in Massena for several years. Donald was a member of the American Legion Post 925 in Norfolk, and truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, socializing, playing shuffleboard and pull tabs and taking an occasional trip to the casino. The funeral for Bernice Irene Decker, 81 of Watertown, will be 1 pm Monday, November 6th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Murray officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday from 11am until 1 pm at the funeral home.

Mrs. Decker passed away Thursday morning in Syracuse following a brief illness.

She is survived by her children Dennis C. (Joann) Patrick, Watertown, David B. (Sai) Patrick, New Hampshire, Spike (Gwen) Decker, Rodman, Nancy (Reggie) Frank, Watertown; 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; her step children George (Leslie) Decker, Brownville, Kevin (Yvette) Decker, Virginia, Karen (Jesse) Pirdgen, Theresa. She was predeceased by brother Harry Savage.

She was born October 10, 1936 in Watertown a daughter to the late Gaylord C. and Leona Moore Savage. Bernice was educated in Watertown schools.

Bernice was the executive housekeeper supervisor at the Holiday Inn on Washington St. from 1973-1988. She later worked in the housekeeping and maintenance departments at Art’s Jug and Sboros restaurants and Doldo Real Estate holdings from 1988- 2004. She retired from the North Country Children’s Clinic in 2006.

Bernice married Malcolm “Mal” Decker September 8, 1962. He passed on August 14, 1977. A previous marriage to Charles Patrick ended in divorce.

John L. Lyndaker

John L. Lyndaker, 94, Mannsville, passed away Wednesday evening November 1, at the Samaritan Medical Center.

Funeral service will be held at the Carpenter Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville on Tuesday, November 7th at 1:00 pm with Pastor Mark Strader officiating. Calling hours will precede the service at the funeral home from 11am-1pm. Burial will be held in the Woodville Mennonite Cemetery.

He was born January 4, 1923 in Croghan, NY a son to John A. and Anna S. Zehr Lyndaker. John married Mary L. Roggie, June 25, 1946 at the Lowville Mennonite Church. Mary was the daughter of John A. Roggie and Beatrice V. Hersh. Mrs. Lyndaker died May 4, 1994,

John worked for Croghan Mills before moving to Mannsville where he had his dairy farm from 1950-1963. After he stopped farming he worked for Phinney’s Chicken Farm in Mannsville, leaving that job to go to work for New York Air Brake retiring in 1993.

He enjoyed the great outdoors spending most of his time splitting wood, coin collecting and genealogy.

John is survived by his children, Roland (Mary), Palmyra; Barbara Collado, Jacksonville, Fl; Edward (Karen), Mannsville; Donald ( Kim), Cody Wyoming; 4 grandchildren, Donald (Thabile) Worthington III, Kristina Worthington, Jason Lyndaker and Jason (Meredith) Galens and 7 great grandchildren, Jayden Lyndaker, Donald Worthington IV, Thabani Worthington, Thabiso Worthington, Ginger Galens and Olivia Salisbury.

Besides his parents and wife John was predeceased by his daughter, Evelyn Singer and his siblings, Andrew, Llwellyn, Mildred Zehr, Geneva and Lawrence.

Hannah E. Stone, 16, of Whitesboro and formerly of Lowville, passed away Wednesday November 1, 2017 at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY with her loving family by her side.

She was born November 13, 2000, in Lowville, NY the daughter of Leonard and Angela (Blair) Stone. Hannah was educated in Lowville and Whitesboro Schools. She was a very talented musician with thousands of followers on the popular media site, YouNow. But with all her fame and popularity, she was most importantly a little sister to her loving brother Garrett.

She is survived by her parents, Leonard and Angela, Whitesboro, brother, Garrett (Fiancee, Jordan), sister, Brittany; maternal grandparents, Ben and Debbie Blair, Lowville and Diane and John Bradish, Whitesboro; paternal grandmother, Mary Stone and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She is predeceased her paternal grandfather, Robert Stone.

Hannah’s family would like to thank her family, close friends and her fans, the “Fannah’s”.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 1-5 pm at Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 40 Main St., Whitesboro. Funeral services will be held on Monday from St. Paul’s Church at 11:30 am, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

CARTHAGE — Richard Fox, 77, of 40824 Rogers Crossing Road, died Saturday, November 4, 2017 at home while under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Born Richard Fuchs (Fox) on August 24, 1940 in Chodov, Czechoslovakia, the son of the late Josef and Franziska (Schubert) Fuchs. When WWII came to their city, his family was forced to leave their home, belongings (except what they could carry), and their business and moved to Unterebersbach, Germany where he grew up and went to school. When Richard finished school, they moved to Frankfurt, Germany where he was a plumbing and heating apprentice and attended business school. He came to the USA in 1956 at the age of 16, working for Altamont Milk Company, Durkees Bakery and various vending machine companies, first as a deliveryman and then as a technician repairing the machines. He married the former Jeannette Lanpher (Jeannie) on May 5, 1962 at the Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage.

Richard loved doing things with his children, grands, hunting, camping, traveling and “tinkering”. He loved a good joke. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the American Legion for 28 yrs. and the Carthage Elks Club for 52 yrs.

He is survived by his wife: Jeannette, one daughter and son-in-law: Karen and Mark Hills, two sons and a daughter-in-law: Jeffrey and JoAnn Fox and Timothy Fox and his fiance’ Christine Hart all of Carthage, 13 Grandchildren, a niece, Charlotte Liebig and a nephew, Ralph Ferguson. He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lisa Lotte Ferguson, a niece Christine Ferguson Kamide and a great niece Maria Liebig.

Funeral services will be held at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, November 8 at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home with Rev. Edward Murphy officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, West Carthage at the family’s convenience. Calling hours will precede the funeral service from 2-5 pm on Wednesday.

George Boyle Towsley

George Boyle Towsley, 94, Pratt St., Watertown died Friday evening, November 3, 2017. He was born October 14, 1923 to George J. and Brigid Boyle Towsley. He was a graduate of Immaculate Heart Academy and the University of Detroit. He married Mary Alice Stumpf on September 12, 1953 in St. Patrick’s Church with Rev. Eugene A. Kelly officiating.

George was drafted into the US Army while attending the University of Detroit in February 1943 and started his World War II service at the Finance Office Training School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN. Subsequently, he was assigned to the Finance Offices in Brisbane, Australia, Port Moresby and Hollandia, New Guinea, and General MacArthur’s Headquarters in Manila, Philippines. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and was Chief Clerk in the 240th Financing Disbursing Section in General MacArthur’s Headquarters.

Upon returning from military service, he continued his education and graduated from the University of Detroit in 1948. He joined the Detroit CPA firm of Lybrand, Ross Bros. & Montgomery in June 1948. In 1952 he returned to Watertown as Assistant Controller of the NY Airbrake Co. In 1968, he set up his CPA practice in Watertown and in 1981 was joined by Keith Gardner, CPA. The partnership maintained its public practice until its merger with Dragon, Benware and Co. in 1991. He left the firm in 1996 and resumed a private CPA practice in his own name in 2001, and continued until his death.

Active in community affairs, he served as Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the former Mater Dei College, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, Finance Officer of the Watertown American Legion Post 61, and Chairman and Treasurer of the IHC School Board. George was a charter member of the Advisory Board of the Watertown Office of Catholic Charities, Trustee of St. Patrick’s Church, and a founding member of St. Joseph Cupertino Fraternity of the Third Order Secular of St. Francis. He was a member of the New York State Society of CPA’s, a charter member of the National World War II Museum, and a life member of Ives Hill Country Club.

In 2005 he was awarded “Senior of the Year” by the Jefferson County Office For the Aging for his work in the Ombudsmen Program sponsored by that office. In May of 2006, he was honored in Albany with other senior citizens by then Governor George E. Pataki at the New York State Senior Citizens Day.

Surviving besides his wife, Mary, are a son, Philip J., Watertown; three daughters, Therese M. Lonczak, Utica, Margaret T. Martin (Bruce), Liverpool, and Elizabeth A. Bamann (William), Watertown; five grandchildren, William, Kevin and Michael Bamann, and Paul and Catherine Martin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his two brothers, James and Robert Towsley.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Tuesday, November 7, from 2 - 4PM. A prayer service will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 8, at 9:15AM followed by the funeral mass celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church at 10AM with Msgr. Paul Whitmore presiding. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Donald (Don) Norman Veley, 89, of Mannsville died at his home while surrounded by his family on November 4, 2017. He was the son of Rex and Mina Veley, born October 27, 1928 in Ellisburg, New York.

He attended schools in Ellisburg and Belleville and later joined the United States Coast Guard at the age of 17. Two years later he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII and fought in the South Pacific. He was a member of the VFW.

Mr. Veley established a successful milk hauling business in 1955 and owned a fleet of trucks, retiring in 1993. Upon retirement he later worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier, was employed by the Town of Ellisburg as snowplow operator and was also a truck driver for Thomas Excavating in Adams until he was 80 years old.

Don was a lifetime volunteer member of the Mannsville - Manor Fire Department, serving in various leadership positions including President, Assistant Fire Chief and Chief. His civic engagement also included serving the Village of Mannsville as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for 3 years, Village Trustee for 8½ years and Mayor for 11½ years. He was instrumental in obtaining funding for the village office/library and construction of the current Mannsville-Manor Fire Hall. He also volunteered for several years as a Little League coach.

He enjoyed life to the fullest and had a passion for his family and sports. Don loved to attend professional baseball games and Syracuse University Athletic events.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Lucille Barclay Veley, his son Michael (Kate), of Jamesville, NY; Sheila Kirby (Wayne) of Fulton, NY; Scott (Christina) of Sandy Creek, NY; and a brother Aubrey of Ellisburg. He was predeceased by a brother Lawrence. He is survived by 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Jefferson County Hospice, along with his personal caregivers Carolyn Smithers, Michelle Roberts, Kim Kehoe and Melissa Barrett for all their care and support during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jefferson County Hospice, Mannsville-Manor Fire Department, or South Jefferson Rescue Squad.

Calling hours will be held at the Carpenter Stoodley Inc. Funeral Home, 7883 NY 289, Belleville, New York on Tuesday, November 7th from 5:00 –8:00 pm. Funeral services to be held on Wednesday, November 8th at 11:00 am at the funeral home, followed by burial at Ellisburg Rural Cemetery.

Jason M. LaVere, 39, of 453 Gaffney Dr., Watertown, passed November 5, 2017 at his home.

A Celebration of Life will be held Noon, Friday, November 10 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home 117 N. Massey St., Watertown.

A calling hour will be 11 A.M. to Noon, Friday prior to the celebration at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in N. Watertown Cemetery.

He was born on October 31, 1978, in Watertown, son of Kenneth J. LaVere and Kathy A. LaRose.

Jason entered Jefferson Rehabilitation Center at three months old and resided there until he was five years old. During those five years Jason made huge strides through the dedication of the agency, programs and staff that work there. Jason then moved to a residential facility at 453 Gaffney Dr., in 1991 and continued to grow with the love and dedication of the staff that work within these houses.

Jason was a huge flirt, loved watching people, going to church, bowling, watching TV, going on outings, and playing Wheel of Fortune on his I pad. Even though Jason was non-verbal he had a way about him that let everyone who was blessed to know him show them how much he loved them by doing what he was most famous for his hugs and kisses. Jason loved his family but he loved his JRC family more. Truly Jason was a blessing in disguise.

Among his survivors are his mother and step father, Kathy A. and Keith A. Murphy, Watertown, his father and his companion, Kenneth J. LaVere and Sue Foreman, Watertown, paternal grandmother, Charlotte McConnell, Watertown, sister and brother in law, Jamie L. and Andrew Thomas, Watertown, step brother and his wife, Brian P and Terri Murphy, Watertown, two step sisters, Brandi L. Murphy, MD and Tiffany R. Murphy, Binghamton, NY, two uncles, David LaVere and Carl McConnell and an aunt, Sylvia McConnell, nieces and nephews.
