John R. Manson

Macomb – John R. Manson, 72, passed away on Monday, December 25, 2017 at his home.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 30th, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur. A graveside service will be announced and held in the spring.

John was born in Macomb on February 10, 1945, the son of Alexander R. and Helen Cunningham Manson.

He worked as a farmer and was a member of Laborer’s Local #322. John enjoyed the outdoors and life as a farmer.

John married Diana E. Bowman on July 17, 1971 at St. Patrick’s Church in Rossie.

He is survived by his wife, his children Julie Hutton of Macomb, Jason Manson of Macomb, Janna Manson of Parish, and 6 grandchildren Dustin, Faith, Collin, Alexus, JohnE, and Donuvin. John is also survived by his siblings Arnold Conklin of Edwards, Hazel Seery of Philadelphia, Yvonne Matice of Gouverneur, Alexander “Bob” Manson of Gouverneur, Mary Hyde of Puxsutawney, PA, several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, a sister Ardis Reynolds, and his son John William “Little Johnny” Manson.

Memorial donations in John’s memory may be made to the Macomb Community Wesleyan Church.


George Thomas (Tom) Rose

George Thomas (Tom) Rose, 73, of Liverpool, NY and Lakeland, FL passed away at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center on Christmas Eve 2017 following a brief illness. Tom was born on June 19, 1944 in Watertown, NY to the late George S. and Nasle Jacob Rose. He was a 1963 graduate of Watertown High School, a U.S. Army veteran, and a 1967 graduate of Jefferson Community College. Tom married Faye Ryan on January 14, 1967.

Tom’s 40-year career included positions as an Auditor for the New York State Department of Taxation & Finance, and as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC) at Fort Drum. He retired in 2008 and began winter residency in Florida.

Tom is survived by his wife, Faye, son Tom (Sharon) Rose, Liverpool; and daughters Chris (Holly Maltese) Rose, Syracuse, and Debbie (Scott) Urban, Egg Harbor, NJ; grandchildren Henry and Jack Rose, and Jude and Alexandra Urban. Also surviving are brothers Michael J. and Robert L. Rose, and sister Martha Rix. Besides his parents, Tom was predeceased by a sister, Judith (Robert) Kramer.

Tom was a very handy fellow who, self-admittedly, could “take a two hour project and make a weekend of it.” He enjoyed puttering around his home and landscaping his yard, as well as tackling odd jobs at the family camp on Pillar Point. Tom was known to enjoy a fine cigar now and again, and he was an avid fan of Mets and Yankees baseball – a bonus when paired together! He was a devoted husband and father who had varied musical interests during this lifetime, though he was most passionately a lover of opera, having for many years been a season ticket holder of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He will be greatly missed.

Phillip E. Wagner,85, died Monday, December 11, 2017, at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, Fl. He was born March 18, 1932, to Robert and Mary (Berends). He served honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He was a widower at the time of his death.

Phil is survived by sons, William Wagner(Peggy), Donald Wagner, David Wagner (Bernadette), and Michael Wagner; daughters, Mary Keller (Mark), Clare Bradley(Alan), Katherine Geogeopolis, Theresa Wagner and Jackie Abbott-Kruger (Robert); sister, Dorothy McGee and husband Larry; 21 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary, wives Faith and Lorna, son Phillip Jr, granddaughter Christine, brothers Robert, Ross, Donald, and sisters Marge, and Edith.

Phil retired from the Navy, Edison Electric and Corning. After retirement Phil wintered in Bradenton Florida in the community of Fair Lane While at home in Potsdam, he was active with the Red Cross and the Colton Volunteer Fire Department. Every August Phil would host the “Wagner-Texas Horseshoe Tournament”, where family and friends would compete in games of ladder ball and Texas horseshoes

A military service with honors will be held on February 1, 2018 at 1:30pm. at Sarasota National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Colton Volunteer Fire Department PO Box 304 Colton, NY 13625

Mildred A. “Mim” Higgins

Mildred A. “Mim” Higgins, age 87 of Three Mile Point Road, Chaumont, passed away Wednesday December 27, 2017 at her home. She was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Mim was born December 11, 1930 in Watertown, the daughter of Benjamin and Mildred Harris Countryman. She graduated from Lyme Central School.

She married Harry Hubbard June 25, 1949 and that marriage ended in divorce. On December 20, 1969 she married Lloyd Higgins who passed away in 2016.

Mim worked as a cook at Lees’ Restaurant on Three Mile Bay, Sleepy Hollow in Cape Vincent, Mariner Rest. In Chaumont, and she and Lloyd owned and operated the Town Tavern in Three Mile Bay for several years.

She was a member of the Bayview Club, Three Mile Bay Methodist Church where she supplied pies and chicken dinners for many years. She loved gardening with her son Jamie Hubbard. Family gatherings were always at Mim’s home and included the “Breakfast Club” on Tuesdays with her brothers and sisters. She also was a caregiver looking after her parents and siblings.

Surviving are four children and their spouses: Wendy and Shawn Hutcheon of Chaumont, Greg and Rose Hubbard o Three Mile Bay and Kevin and Sylvia Hubbard of Depauville. She has step-children including Stephen and Debbie Higgins of Dexter, Debbie and Mike Rogers of Clayton, David and Shelly Higgins of Cape Vincent. She has a brother Keith Countryman of Chaumont, 7 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Lloyd, a son Jaime in 2015, sisters: Lois Aubertine, Jean Denney, Mavis Wiley and a brother Arlington “Jake” Countryman.

Per Mims wishes; there will be no calling hours or funeral services. She will be cremated and buried in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Cape Vincent. MASSENA - Ms. Pauline E. Claffey, 96, a longtime resident of 12 Ames Street, peacefully passed away Friday afternoon, December 22, 2017 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since 2009.

CAMDEN - Louis D. Turck, died on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Rome Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Turck was born December 12, 1940 in Lowville the son of the late Henry G. and Mildred G. (Wood) Turck. Louis graduated from Fr. Leo memorial in Croghan. He was employed at the Turning Stone Casino maintenance department.

When Louis was younger he enjoyed camping with his sons and hunting and fishing.

He is survived by two sons: Jamey D. Turck of Utica; Michael L. and Dawn Turck of Camden; his four sisters, Elizabeth J. Bush of Watertown; Sue VanAlstyne of Tullahoma, TN; Barbara Brown of Lowville; Teresa Kramer of Fairmont, WV; his four brothers, James H. of Carthage; Barry D. of Alcove; Leland S. of Croghan; Douglas B. of Coxsacki; six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his brother, Kenneth N. Turck.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday, December 30th at the Sundquist Funeral Home, Lowville, from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 Noon, when his funeral service will be held at the funeral home with Rev. Donald Manfred, Pastor of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Bremen.

Patricia Kinkead Paddock

LOWVILLE - Patricia Kinkead Paddock, 86, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2017 in her Lowville home, under the care of her family and three wonderful caregivers.

An avid outdoorswoman, she enjoyed farming, raising her six children and, later in life, overseeing the family furniture-making business (Southern Cross). Her hobbies included gardening, cross country skiing, kayaking, swimming and playing/teaching tennis.

Born on May 7, 1931, in Westfield, NJ, she married her high school sweetheart, Harry Paddock, on July 2, 1949. In addition to their home in Lowville, the couple had houses on Simcoe Island, Canada and on Long Island, Bahamas.

Mrs. Paddock is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Dale Cole of Lowville, Sue and Mike Maring of Lowville, Patty and Chris Jaacks of Nokomis, FL; two sons and their wives, Barry and Cheryl Paddock of Concord, NH and Jon and Maria Paddock of Boston, MA; 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Harry, a son Michael Bruce, a sister Phyllis Kelley, a companion Ralph, and a son-in-law Richard Cole.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held in the spring.

Anthony L. “Nat” Natali

Anthony L. “Nat” Natali, 81, of Watertown and formerly of Clayton, passed away at Samaritan Medical Center on Tuesday evening, December 26, 2017.

A graveside service in Clayton Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours or funeral. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.

Nat was born in Clayton on January 9, 1936, son of Ernest F. and Loretta Marrone Natali. He graduated from Clayton High School and attended both Potsdam University and Ithaca College. On January 6, 1955 he entered the US Army, received the Good Conduct Medal, and was honorably discharged from active duty on July 23, 1957. He then served in the Reserves.

On April 23, 1966 he married Ellen D. Hartman at St. Michael’s Church, Rochester.

He was an On Air Radio Personality for WATN AM 1240 and also sold advertising for the radio station. Nat was a member of the Watertown Train Club and enjoyed model trains. While in the Army, he was a percussionist. He continued his love of music by playing for the Lowville Community Band and for JCC, both in the orchestra and community band.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen D., his son and his wife, Michael E. and Kelly L. M. Natali, Liverpool, and his grandson, Alexander J. Natali. He also has several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

ADAMS, NY- Janice G. Filley, 81, of Adams N.Y. died at her home on Sunday Dec. 17th, 2017. Daughter of Frederick Osterhout and Henrietta Vanetten, born on 11/30/36 in Auburn City Hospital N.Y.

Arrangements have been entrusted to North Country Cremation Service, owned and operated by Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown, NY.

Janice was a waitress at The Dover Hotel at Emerson Park in Auburn N.Y. She also ran ASPCA in the city of Auburn N.Y. She worked at Sampson Air Base Post exchange in 1954 where she met the love of her life Francis A. Filley. They were married in Waterloo N.Y. on Jan 27th, 1955. They had four daughters, Denise Burkard, Anita Quinta, Diana Filley and Selina (Gordon) Towles. She has 9 grandchildren, Christa Weal, Christine Burkard, Leanore Grant, Kevin Quinta, Jolene Weaver, Rhinannon Filley, Alyssa Filley, Taylor Towles and Frank Towles. She also has 5 great grandchildren, Collin Barber, Jane Grant, Wyatt Weaver, Imara Filley and Arya Grant. Two surviving brothers, Donny Osterhout & Johnny Osterhout, and a surviving sister Sue (John) Babbit, and several nieces and nephews.

Janice enjoyed gardening, sewing and raising veal calves and horses, she made contributing donations of her vegetables from their garden to senior communities. Her life’s passion was breeding, raising and training AKC registered Scotties and her prize possession Dobermans for security companies in Florida. She trained her dogs and attended various AKC dog shows all over the state. She clipped & groomed dogs and boarded dogs and cats. She enjoyed the outdoors and her family.

Ensby, a resident of 6100 Deep Glade Drive, Baldwinsville, and formerly of Colton, NY, will be held Friday, January 5, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Colton with Rev. Raymond Moreau presiding. Burial will be held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Colton in the springtime. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton on Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. Mrs. Ensby passed away early Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at her home with family at her side.

Lois is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard; Baldwinsville and Colton; two sons, Michael and Ellyn, Landsdale, PA; Stephen and Colleen, Phoenix, NY; three daughters, Lynda and William Slater, Baldwinsville; Machell and Al Jones, Lacona, NY; Stephany and Douglas Collins, Weedsport, NY; her thirteen beloved grandchildren, Trevor Jones, Geoffrey Ensby, Alex Ensby, Madison Slater, Jack Slater, Paige Ensby, Brooke Ensby, Samantha Jones, Nikolas Jones, Ashton Collins, Adrihanna Collins, Lorelai Ensby and Quinncy Ensby and her two great-grand-daughters, Hailey and Claire Jones. Lois is also survived by her four brothers, Henry “Bud” and Carole Dominy, Colton; Charles and Elise Dominy, Ft. Jackson; Lyle and Margaret Dominy, Worcester, MA and Edward Dominy, Colton as well as several nieces and nephews. Lois was pre-deceased by a son, Christopher Ensby and a sister, Jane Skrzypek.

Born in Potsdam, NY on April 10, 1938 to the late Henry and Esther Mayo Dominy, Lois graduated from Potsdam Central High School, earned an Associates Degree from Canton ATC and later in life attended SUNY Oswego , receiving a Bachelor’s of Arts. She married Richard F. Ensby on May 30, 1959. For over 20 years, Lois worked at the Bonanza Restaurant in Liverpool while raising her family in Baldwinsville where she enjoyed bowling in several local women’s leagues. In the late 1990s, Richard and Lois returned to the North Country where she became very active at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and within the general Colton community as a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and choir, the TREC program, SOARS at SUNY Potsdam and as a volunteer with the Literacy program with St. Lawrence County. Lois truly loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, along with working in her vegetable and flower gardens. She also enjoyed playing Mahjong on a weekly basis with her Arbuckle Pond neighbors. Funeral services for Florence R. “Flossie” Planty, age 89 of Lisbon and formerly of Rensselaer Falls will be held at 11:00am on Monday (Jan 1, 2018) at the Lisbon Wesleyan Church with Pastors Floyd McCallum and son in law Gary Jarrett concelebrating. Burial will be in the spring at White Church Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday (Dec 31, 2017) from 2:00-6:00pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mrs. Planty went into the arms of Jesus on Thursday (Dec 28th) surrounded by her loving family.

Surviving is a son Channy (Susan) Planty of Rensselaer Falls; two daughters Dorotha (Gary) Jarrett of Bloomsburg, PA and Yvonne (Paul) McGrath of Lisbon; brothers David “Peanut” Beldock, Lewis Beldock and Clifford Baldock; sisters Elsie Carr and Elaine Hawk; 8 grandchildren, Lisa (Randy) Hubbard, Jason Planty, Jamie (Claude) Bennett, Annette (Zeeshan) Hayett, Gidget (Beau) Hamner, David (Caroline) Jarrett, Adam (Lauren) McGrath, Ashley (Cory) Dodgens; 3 step-grandchildren; 12 great-greatgrandchildren and many nieces, nephews & cousins.

Her son Eric Planty and five brothers James, Francis, Edwin, Webster and Carl predeceased her.

Flossie was born on February 16, 1928 in Brier Hill, NY, a daughter of the late James & Florence (Shampine) Baldock. She attended schools in Morristown and Lisbon and later married Maynard C. Planty on May 18, 1953 at the Lisbon Wesleyan Church with Rev. Alton Seaman officiating. He later predeceased her.

During her career she worked at Cleveland Container, McConville Hotel, McCadam Cheese, Edge of Town, and The Pennysaver, until caring for her mother in her elder years. She was a member of the Lisbon Wesleyan Church and enjoyed going for rides with her grandchildren, boating, snowmobiling, motorcycling, gardening, being outdoors, reading her bible, singing, playing UNO, adventures, laughing, animals, being active and spending time with her family.

Funeral services for Walter K. Stull, Jr., age 64, of Ogdensburg, NY, will be held on Sunday, December 31, 2017, at 2:00PM at Frary Funeral Home with Rev. Walter Smith officiating. Mr. Stull was stricken at Castle Ridge Manor United Helpers on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, and pronounced at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center.

Walter is survived by two sons, Kenny Stull and his wife, Amy, of Ogdensburg, NY and Craig Stull of Canton, NY; a companion, Patsy Duprey of Ogdensburg, NY; two step-children, Nicole McCarthy and her husband, Mike, of Lisbon, NY and Shelby Barr of Canton, NY; grandchildren, Noah, Kaydence, Kenna, Kyra, Graceland, Bella, Sophie, Kinleigh and Trenton; a sister, Debra Harper and her husband, Ron, of Brockville, Ontario and a brother, Ronald Stull and his companion, Donna Bouchey, of Ogdensburg, NY and nieces, nephews and cousins. Walter is predeceased by a son, Jason Stull and two grandchildren, Gage & Koltyn Stull.

Walter was born on August 22, 1953, in Easton, PA, the son of Walter and Beverly A. Corkins Stull. He attended Belvedere High School in Belvedere, NJ. He married Florence Barr on November 13, 1976, at St. Mary’s Cathedral with Rev. Raymond J. Moreau. Walter worked for Corkins Roofing, Hollis Roofing and Mr. Grant Roofing based out of Harrisville, NY. After he retired, he worked part time at Castle Ridge Manor United Helpers.

Walter enjoyed hanging out with his grandchildren, especially his “Little Man”, Noah, as well as spending time with friend, Willis. He also enjoyed hunting and working.

Charles “Chuck: Gavin Wert

Charles “Chuck” Gavin Wert, age 67, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on December 28th, 2017. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home Inc., Watertown, NY. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring at a date to be announced. The youngest of 4 children, he was born January 26th, 1950 in Amsterdam, NY to Sheriff William S. and Catherine M. Wert.

He is predeceased by his parents and sister Catherine LeRoy (Marv) of Amsterdam. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Ann, his daughters Katie Taylor (Ricky), Lorie Autote (Christopher), grandsons Gavin & Zachary Taylor and Drew & Evan Autote, his brother Jim Wert (Nancy), sister Melynda Argersinger (Donald), many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews, and their children.

Chuck graduated from Amsterdam High School in 1968 and was a proud “Rugged Ram”! He attended Washburn University in Topeka, KS on an athletic scholarship and returned to his hometown in 1970. Chuck met his future bride, Mary Ann Nadler, at Trinity Reformed Church while singing in the choir. They married in that church on July 15th, 1972. He worked in law enforcement for 4 years before taking a management position at a local Pizza Hut. In 1977 the franchise moved he and his family to Watertown to open the Arsenal St. Pizza Hut as its manager. In 1982 he and his wife opened the Wing Wagon on Public Square in Watertown, which is still open after 35 years.

Chuck was an avid barbershop singer, a hobby in which he was tremendously involved. He began his barbershop career singing with the Islander Chorus in Watertown in 1983. Over the last 34 years he also sang with and directed choruses in Rochester, Canton, Carthage, and Syracuse. His comedy quartet, “Cornerstone”, entertained audiences around the globe for over two decades! He also proudly sang in a quartet with his wife and daughters called “Compound W”, starting in 1988. He was an avid golfer and a lover of all things sports, especially the NY Giants! He greatly enjoyed travelling the world with his wife, cooking, loving his cat “Jack”, and most of all supporting his grandsons in their musical, sporting, and academic endeavors. He was loved and admired by many.

Sally A. (Boyer) Yeddo

MASSENA – Mrs. Sally A. (Boyer) Yeddo, 79, of 15 North Allen Street, passed away early Friday morning at her home.

Sally was born March 16, 1938 in Massena, the daughter of the late Ivan and Elizabeth (Wickwire) Boyer. She was a graduate of Massena Central School and earned her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Development from Canton ATC. She continued her education at SUNY Plattsburgh, where she graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Education and Special Education. Sally later graduated from SUNY Potsdam with her M.S. Degree in Elementary Education. On November 24, 1956, she married Everett Yeddo, Sr. at St. Joseph’s Church in Massena. He predeceased her on February 20, 2002.

Sally was a devoted wife, mother, and special educator, having taught from 1980 until 2000 for St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES at Kennedy Elementary School in Ogdensburg. She was a longtime and awarded affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America; throughout the years, she was a Den Mother, Trainer, Neighborhood Commissioner, and Explorer Advisor and was awarded with the honors of the Canadian Wood Badge and Silver Fawn, which has only been given to three recipients. When she retired, she was given the Golden Apple Award. She also worked as the archivist at the Town of Massena Museum from ten years, and was currently serving on the Board of Directors for the museum. Sally was also a member of the St. Lawrence-Lewis Retired Teachers, serving as the treasurer for 23 years. In addition, Sally was a member of the St. Lawrence Country Chapter of New York State Professional Women, also serving as their President, Vice President, and Secretary at one time. Sally was a longtime member of the Calvary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and served in the Mission Committee.

Sally is survived by her three sons, Everette Jr. and Deb Yeddo of Massena; Theodore Robert and Paula Yeddo of Florida; and Sammy Lee Yeddo of Massena; her brother, Wayne and Sandy Boyer of Massena; her sisters, Mary Jane Mowers and Betty and David Page, all of Massena; her grandchildren, Teri and Chris Maynard of Texas; Becky Yeddo of Massena; Dewayne and Bethany Yeddo of Massena; Robert and Casey Yeddo of North Carolina; and Derek and Shania Yeddo of Malone; two step-granddaughters, Stacy and Tiffany Daley; and her great grandchildren, Austin, David, Landon, Dakota, Kayla, Zoe, Kia, Desray, and Ruth Yeddo and Landon Maynard; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Sally was predeceased by two sons, Henry Joseph and Robert Allen and a daughter, Kim Marie.

There will be no calling hours. A celebration of life will be held at 6:30 PM on January 10th at the Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Colin Lucid, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Sand Hill Cemetery, Dickinson.

McKena Rita LaPlaca, 14 of Grove St., Adams, passed away with her family by her side on Thursday December 28th at University Hospital in Syracuse. McKena was a 9th grade student at the South Jefferson School District.

The funeral mass will be 11 am Tuesday, January 2nd at St. Cecilia’s Church, 17 Grove St., Adams with Rev. Martin Cline officiating. Calling hours will be Monday, January 1st from 1 pm – 5 pm at St. Cecilia’s Church.

McKena is survived by her mother and step father, Elizabeth “Beth” and Gary Comins and her father and his fiancé’ Steven LaPlaca and Susan, all of Adams; grandparents Douglas and Mary MacIlvennie, Mannsville and Marilyn LaPlaca, Watertown; her sister Lindsay LaPlaca (Michael Krause), Rochester; her brothers Robert LaPlaca and Andrew (Casey) LaPlaca, all of Adams; her nephew Mason LaPlaca and niece Lia LaPlaca; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the South Jefferson Central School for a fund to be established for the constructions of a playground for disabled and handicapped children or to the Double H. Ranch, 97 Hidden Valley Rd., Lake Luzerne, NY 12846.
