Thelma A. Burns

Carthage – Thelma A. Burns, 96, of 507 West Street, died early Thursday morning, March 8, 2018, at Lewis County General Hospital.

Born in Montague (Rector), New York on July 23, 1921, Thelma was the daughter of William and Julia McDonald Burns. She graduated from Carthage Augustinian Academy and then from the Mercy School of Nursing. Ms. Burns enlisted in the Army in 1944. She served in the States, the Fiji Islands, Calcutta, Burma and India. She participated in the China-India-Burma Theater. During her nursing career, she was employed by both the Mercy Hospital and Samaritan Medical Center. The majority of her long nursing career was private duty. Thelma touched many lives, assisting people with their medical and spiritual needs. Thelma served on many boards over her lifetime. She was a communicant and member of St. James Catholic Church in Carthage. Thelma was devoted to her family and friends.

Thelma is survived by her cousins, Frederick and Marlene Norfolk of Adams Center with whom she resided this past year, cousins Richard and William Burke of Lowville, Kathy McIntosh of Lowville, nephew Andrew MacMillen of Oswego, a niece and several nephews. Thelma is predeceased by her five sisters, Francis, Mary, Naomi, Norma, and Wanda of Carthage. She will be remembered by her dear friends Julia Blaschke and Rebecca Knight.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 from 11 AM -1 PM at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. 500 State Street, Carthage. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 1 PM. Burial will be in the spring in Lowville Rural Cemetery. Mark Stephen Ripp

Mark Stephen Ripp, 63, Lebanon, TN, died Tuesday, March 6th at the Summit Medical Center, Hermitage, TN.

Mark was born September 1, 1954 in Lowville, a son to the late John and Natalie Boland Ripp. He was educated at South Lewis Central School, Turin.

Following his education, Mark joined the US Army, serving 20 years, 13 of which he was stationed in Germany. Following his honorable discharge and retirement from the military, he worked as a section manager with Aircraft Battery in Lebanon.

Mark is survived by his children, Heather (Trent) Patterson, Watertown, TN, Bonnie Ripp and Andrew Ripp, both of Buffalo Valley, TN, Jonathon Ripp, Oklahoma; three grandchildren; his brothers and sisters William Ripp, Florida, Patricia (Thomas) Koubek, New Jersey, Mary Gen Ripp, Port Leyden, Michael (Judy) Ripp, Lyons Falls, Brian Ripp, Port Leyden, Sean (Lou Anne) Ripp, Sackets Harbor, Kathleen Ripp, Hawthorne, NY, Alan (Lynette) Ripp, Port Leyden, and Laura (Paul) Lazarus, Lowville; eight nephews and three nieces.

Funeral arrangements are with the Hunter Funeral Home, Watertown, TN.

The funeral mass for Hazel Bartlett will be 11:00am Wednesday, March 14th at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Watertown, Rev. Jonas Tondayu officiating. Spring burial will be held at the families’ convenience. Calling hours will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm Tuesday March 13th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown.

Hazel passed away Thursday, March 8th at Hospice of Jefferson County. She was 91 years old.

Hazel was born November 13, 1926 in Watertown. She was educated locally, and worked at the Watertown Linen Supply where she retired from in 1991.

She married Gordon W. Reynolds July 1, 1944 at St. Theresa’s Church in Theresa. Mr. Reynolds passed away July 19, 1964.

On January 5, 1974 she married Stanley Bartlett, son of the late Ellis and Mabel Bartlett, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Mr. Bartlett, a 40 year retiree of St. Regis Paper Co., died July 16, 1998.

Hazel was a member of the American Legion Post 61 Auxiliary, VFW Post 1400 Auxiliary, and a Patron member of the Eagles Club Post 782 Auxiliary.

She is survived by three daughters: Rosemarie Nadelen of Croghan, Sandra and Walter Smith of Smithville, Cherie Ransome of New Bremen; a stepson: Stan and Marline Bartlett of Rochester; and a stepdaughter: Cindy and Jerry Spaziani of Watertown. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband(s), she is predeceased by a son in-law, Michael Ransome, and two sisters, Nel & May.

Mary E. (Pickett) Denney

Mary E. (Pickett) Denney, 85, died Thursday, March 8, 2018, at the United Helpers Riverledge Nursing Home, while surrounded by her loving family.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 12th at 12:00 PM at Grace Church, Canton. Burial will be in the Cathedral of All Saints, Albany, NY. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Canton, NY.

Surviving are her two daughters, Pamela Denney of Tillson, NY, Stephanie Denney of Syracuse, NY, four grandchildren and their spouses and eight great grandchildren. Her husband, Rev. Curtis S. Denney, her son, Daniel, four sisters, one brother and one great grandchild predeceased her.

Mrs. Denney was born in Watertown, New York on September 23, 1932, a daughter of Bertram and Marjorie Ada Perkins Pickett. She graduated from Watertown High School with the Class of 1950.

In 1951, Mary was united in marriage with the Rev. Curtis S. Denney. Thereafter, they celebrated 64 blessed years until Rev. Denney’s passing November 1, 2015.

She has held many clerical positions through the years. Her most recent where she retired as a medical records technologist at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center.

Mrs. Denney enjoyed sewing, bowling, and traveling with family and friends. She was a woman that had a drive that never stopped. Along with her many ministries at many Episcopal churches in the North Country including Grace Episcopal Church, Canton, she was one of the founding members of Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.

The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be given to Grace Episcopal Church, Canton or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.

Funeral services for James C. Cleveland, age 87, of Harrisville, NY, will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at 11:00AM at the the Harrisville Christian Church with Pastor Mike Gault officiating. Burial will be in the Harrisville Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 12, 2018, at Frary Funeral Home in Harrisville from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 6:00PM to 8:00PM. Mr. Cleveland passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, March 9, 2018 at the Hospice House of Jefferson County with his son Scott and daughter-in-law Marcia by his side.

Jim is survived by four children, his son Scott Cleveland and his wife Marcia, of Gouverneur; Jennifer Bouya and her husband Ray, of Apple Valley, CA, Michael Cleveland, of Watertown, NY, Cynette Cheal, of Roanoke, VA; three sisters, Arlene Shaw, of Apple Valley, CA, Leta Mantle, Harrisville, NY, Carol Ryan, Pitcairn, NY; one brother-in-law, Floyd Layboult, of Richville, NY; one sister-in-law, Esther Cleveland, of Hermon, NY; several grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a grandpuppy, Reagan. Jim was predeceased by wife, MaryLee; five brothers, Lawrence, Harold, Wesley, Kenneth Dale, and Dale Francis Cleveland; three sisters, Irene Layboult, Leta Ruth, and Joyce Cleveland.

Jim was born on January 27, 1931 in the town of Pitcairn, NY, the son of Clarence Cleveland and Lavisa LaVancha Cleveland. He attended Harrisville Central School and eventually went to work on the family farm. He married MaryLee Sayer on June 15, 1957 at the First Presbyterian Church in Gouverneur, NY with Rev. Merritt W. Updyke officiating. After leaving the family farm, he went into business for himself driving pulp truck which he enjoyed very much. One of the biggest joys of Jim’s life was his work at Harrisville Central School District where he worked for over 22 years, becoming the Head Bus Driver before retiring in 1978.

When Jim wasn’t working, he enjoyed sitting on his porch underneath his maple trees telling stories. He loved the all the kids at school and was very passionate about his work at the school where he was respected by many. He loved to go for rides through the back roads with his son Scott and their dogs, telling stories from when he was a young man.

Pittsford: Peacefully and with her family at her side on Friday, March 9th, 2018 at the age of 92. She is predeceased by her husband, Fred L. Carbone; son, Steven A., and infant daughter, Jean Marie.

Joseph O. Erdner

Joseph O. Erdner, 82, of Seymour Street, went to be with the Lord, March 9, 2018, at his home under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County and his loving children.

Joseph was born August 20, 1935, in Pittsburg, PA, a son of Joseph and Clara Masko Erdner. In 1954, he graduated from North Catholic High School in Pittsburg. He entered the United States Air Force after high school and after serving many duty stations he ended up at Dry Hill, NY. For thirty five years, he worked at Niagara Mohawk where he was a lineman foreman. He married Loretta Bocciolatt on August 18, 1956, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church with Reverend Joseph Francor officiating.

Joseph was a devout catholic, attending weekly mass. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, a member of the Holy Name Society and volunteered for activities within the parish. He enjoyed spending time with his family most of all. He enjoyed woodworking, playing golf, and as he said “keeping his mind sharp” with crossword puzzles.

Surviving are four children, Michael (Sue) Erdner, Adams, NY, Kathy Mancini, Watertown, NY, Jim (Cheryl) Erdner, Huntsville, Alabama, Paul (Terri) Erdner, Watertown, NY, a brother David (Joyce) Erdner, Pittsburg, PA, ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by his wife Loretta, his daughter Jan Marie, his parents Joseph and Clara, two sisters Jean and Roseanne, and a brother William.

Charles T. Gotham

LOWVILLE – Charles T. Gotham, 95, passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.

Born October 26, 1922, in Potsdam, a son of the late Charles M. and Marjorie Place Gotham, Charles attended school in Canton as a young boy until 1934, when he and his family moved to Elmira, where he graduated from Southside High School in 1941.

In 1943, Charles joined the service and did his basic training in Biloxi, MS, where he volunteered to join the United States Army Air Corp as an Air Gunner. After a year of training, he was sent overseas and flew 35 missions over Europe in a B-24 while stationed in North Pickenham. In 2007, he and his nephew, John Longwell, traveled back to that airstrip and countryside. Because of his volunteer status into the Army air Corp, Charles was given the rank of Staff Sergeant. Charles was awarded the Air Medal and DFC, Distinguished Flying Cross for his tour of duty. Charles was a member of the American Legion.

Upon returning to the States in 1945, Charles married Norma Emily Hollenbeck on September 15, 1945, at the Park Congregational Church in Elmira. He then took advantage of the GI Bill and graduated cum laude from Niagara University in 1950, with a B.B.A. degree. He worked for GLF in Ithaca before joining the staff at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton in 1958, and retired as VP in 1980. In their retirement, Charles and Norma enjoyed winters in Venice and Zephyrhills, FL and summers in Canton, PA. Norma died in October of 1999. He married Anne Waite in 2004, she died in 2006.

Charles moved into Brookside Senior Living Center in October of 2007, where he continued researching genealogy on the computer and visiting relatives and friends on the East Coast, especially his pilot during the war.

Charles is survived by; seven nephews: John Longwell, Randy, Greg, Gary, David and Dana Gotham, Tom Halm; three nieces, Donna O’Connor, Rorie Lynn Gotham and Maralys Swart; several grand nephews and nieces.

His brothers, Ivan K. Gotham and Andrew J. Gotham, and a sister, Dorothy M. Longwell died before him.

Per Charles’ request, his body will be cremated and there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira.

Funeral services for Sheila M. Guertin, age 78, of Ogdensburg, NY, will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date in the Spring. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home, Ogdensburg. Mrs. Guertin passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Sheila is survived by her husband, Robert; her children, Kelly Gonyea and her husband, Kenneth, of Lisbon, NY, Kurt Guertin and his wife, Carol, of Covington, GA and Kara Lawton and her husband, Jeffory, Ogdensburg, NY; seven grandchildren, Korey Francis and his wife, Holly, Nicole Lowe and her husband, William, Kingston Guertin, Sara Lawton and her companion, Robert Williams, Mollie Lawton and her companion, Travis Robertson, Tucker Lawton and Austin Lawton; four great grandchildren, Sophia Francis, Drake Francis, Joshua Lowe and Liam Lowe as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by four brothers, Theodore, Ronald, Donald and Timothy Murphy and her dog, Reload.

Sheila was born on November 13, 1939, in Ogdensburg, NY, the daughter of Lawrence and Hattie Mashaw Murphy. She attended St. Mary’s Academy and graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1958. Sheila married Robert Guertin on September 22, 1961, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, in Ogdensburg, NY, with Rev. A.D. Charbonneau officiating. Later, Sheila and her husband moved to Prescott, Ontario in 1963 and moved back to Ogdensburg in 1967. Sheila worked for Hepburn Pharmacy in high school and then went on to be employed by Woolworth’s as a cashier and later Loblaw’s as head cashier. Loblaw’s was then bought out by Great American where Sheila continued to be employed until the company closed. Mrs. Guertin, at the age of 55, decided to further her education at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, Ontario in the Cosmetology Program. Sheila worked at Hair Express with her daughter, Kelly, in Ogdensburg, where she remained until her retirement.

Sheila enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed shopping, boating, four wheeling, snowmobiling and woodchuck hunting. Sheila was also an excellent marks man and enjoyed target shooting. Mrs. Guertin was also a member of the UFCW Local 1 Meat Cutters Union where she held the position of Union Steward.

Diane Elizabeth Nichols Mueller, age 81 of Seguin, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends on March 8, 2018. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 12, 2018 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel at 3 p.m. with Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery. Diane was born October 21, 1936 in Watertown, New York to Robert and Lillian (Keegan) Nichols. She met and married her husband Melvin A. “Sonny” Mueller in Florida. Diane loved Florida, especially trips to the beach and Disney World. Weekly family dinner gatherings on Tuesday Evenings at the house were always special to Diane. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Melvin A. “Sonny” Mueller and her parents and brother-in-law, Ray Mueller. She is survived by her children, Katharine Howard and husband Mark, Mike Mueller and wife Carrie, David Mueller and wife Emily; grandchildren who knew her as “Oma”, Mason and Jeff Mueller, Logan and Noah Howard, and Douglas Mueller; brother, Ronald Nichols and wife Terry; brothers-in-law, Donald Mueller, and Kenneth Mueller and wife Linda; sister-in-law, Katherine “Sissy” Hatfield and husband Robert; her beloved cat, Annabelle; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends. Jean is survived by a son, Michael and his wife, Sandra, of Ogdensburg, NY; grandchildren, Becky Duprey and her wife, Barbara Burwell, Michele Zulauf and her husband, Donald, Michael Duprey and his wife, Judy, Mathew Duprey and Billy Joe Duprey all of Ogdensburg, NY, John Cardello of Tulsa, OK, Douglas Duprey of Lisbon, NY, Amy Gavin of Pennsylvania; a daughter-in-law, Kimberly Duprey of Lisbon, NY; eighteen great grandchildren; ten great great grandchildren; a sister, Harriett Foeppal of Eustis, FL, and nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by a son, Danny L. Duprey in 2003 and a grandson, Stephen Paul Duprey, in 2014; a brother, Glendon Davison; a sister, Marion Kauffman, in 1955, and a close friend, Leona Carmody.

Jean was born on October 15, 1922, in Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Vid and Eva Brough Davison. Jean married Stillman (Stutz) Duprey on April 16, 1941, in Anniston, Alabama, with Rev. Dr. Clark officiating. Mr. Duprey predeceased her on July 4, 1967. Jean worked at Newell’s Factory in 1969 and retired in 1985.

Jean was a member of the Ogdensburg Senior Citizens Club. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Jean also loved dancing and telling stories of the past.

Mrs. Ladouceur is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Farmer and her husband, Russell, of Norwood; four sons, Richard Ladouceur and his wife, Anna, of Ogdensburg, Thomas Ladouceur and his wife, Leah, of Ogdensburg, Edward Ladouceur of Heuvelton, and Peter Ladouceur and his wife, Tracy, of Ogdensburg; six grandchildren, Melissa Stull, Hayley Henry and her husband, Michael, Richard Thomas Ladouceur and his wife, Hailey, Rebecca Ladouceur, Jacob and Jarred Ladouceur; ten great grandchildren, Devon, Dylan and Desiree Johnston, Kyle, Connor and Emma Henry and Mariah Stull, and Abigal, Hannah and Chloe Ladouceur. She was predeceased by a son, Arthur Ladouceur, II, in 2007; her husband, Arthur Ladouceur, in 2012, and her brother, Edward Sholette.

Theresa was born on April 7, 1930 in Ogdensburg, the daughter of Edward and Mona Colburn Sholette. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1947. She married Arthur M. Ladouceur on July 4, 1950 at Notre Dame Church with Rev. Emile LaLonde officiating. She worked for a short period for New York Telephone and later for Triangle Shoe Store. Theresa worked fourteen years in food service at St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center retiring as a switchboard operator.

Theresa enjoyed knitting, spending time on the river and was very active with Notre Dame Choir. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, March 18, 2018, from 12:00PM to 3:00PM at the VFW, 1112 Champlain St., Ogdensburg, NY. Donald J. Wert passed away March 7, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Donald was born March 25, 1952 to the late Harold and Gladys (Richardson) Wert. Arrangements are under the direction of Frary Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Ogdensburg.

He is survived by his loving companion of twenty-five years, Caroline LaRock and her seven children that without hesitation became his own: Kimberly Sharlow and her companion Rich Chevrier, Timothy LaRock, Kelly LaRock and her compainion David Timm Jr., Lori (Paul) Innes, Tammy (Chris) Smithers, Crystal LaRock and companion Larry Gemmill, Melissa LaRock and companion Ryan Simmons. He is also survived by his nephew Kevin Wert, a paternal Aunt Mary Panepinto, maternal Aunt Pat Demers and a maternal Uncle Harry Richardson.

Donald’s grandchildren were his treasures: Jolen (Zacariah) Pike, Tarra (Adam) Woodcock, Jordan Strathdee and companion Marissa Catlin, Morgan (Ricky) Kelly, Miranda Smithers and companion Kyle Mashaw, John, Daisy and Zachary Gagnon, Shelby and Kayla Innes, Hayden and Raiden LaRock, Nicholas LaRock and Twelve Great Grandchildren.

Don was predeceased by his brother, Harold Wert Jr., a sister, Sue O’Marah, and many special friends.

Donald retired from the Ogdensburg City School district where he worked as a custodian for twenty years.

He enjoyed spending time with family having back yard Bar-B-Q’s and camping. He enjoyed the casino to the extent that he named his canine companion, Poker.

LaRita “Toot” Flanagan, age 60 of Canton, NY passed away on Monday night, March 5, 2018 at Canton Potsdam Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

LaRita is survived by her husband of 38 years, Norman; three sons, Thomas J. Flanagan and his companion, Lisa Hunt, of Langhorne, PA, Daniel J. Flanagan and his wife, Ashley, of DeKalb, NY and Craig R. Flanagan and his companion, Chelsea Sharlow, of Canton, NY; one daughter, Jodi Flanagan, of Canton, NY; five siblings, Minnie Flanagan of Canton, NY, James Walrath and his wife, Joyce of Herman, NY, Kevin Walrath of SC, Judson Foote and his wife, Candy of Pyrites, NY and Paula Lucas of SC; sister-in-law, Dale Walrath of Canton, NY and a brother-in-law, Larry Flanagan of Canton, NY & sixteen grandchildren. She is predeceased by five brothers, Thomas, Lyman, Emerson, Frederick, George Walrath & one sister, Valerie Flanagan.

LaRita, daughter of Merlin and Bertha Ashley Walrath Foote was born on April 3, 1957 in Bay Shore, NY. She attended H.C. Williams High School and went on to work for the United Helpers at the Maplewood Campus for 38 years. LaRita married Norman on July 28, 1979 at Beech Plains Church in Canton, NY.

LaRita enjoyed making ceramics, puzzles, pursuing garage sales and shopping. She also took great pride in taking care of her residents at work in the Maplewood Nursing Home.

A memorial service for the late Richard L. Spencer will be held on Saturday March 31st at 1:00 PM at the Dexter United Methodist Church, 210 W. Kirby St. Dexter.

Richard passed away on December 16, 2017 at his winter home in Lake Placid, Florida.

Dick was employed by Black Clawson Company of Watertown for 45 years. A life-long member of Dexter United Methodist Church, Dexter Fire Department, Dexter Masonic Lodge, Dexter American Legion, Rustic Golf Club and former member of the Lions Club.

Dick is survived by daughters, Cheryl (Tom) Ashley of Alexandria Bay and Lake Placid, FL., Diane (Reg) Schweitzer of Chaumont., 7 Grandchildren, 18 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great great grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Duffany, brother in law William Esford and several nieces and nephews. His wife Audrey predeceased him in 2016.

A celebration of his life will follow the service at the Dexter American Legion 105 E. Bronson St. Dexter.

The Funeral for Mr. Norman (Barney) L. Clark, 87, who died unexpectedly at his home in LaFargeville on Friday, March 9th, will be 11am on Thursday March 15th at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home with Reverend Frederica officiating. A Spring burial will be held at Omar Cemetery at a time to be announced.

Melinda Carina Roberts

Watertown — Melinda Carina Roberts, 23, passed away on Friday, March 9th, 2018.

Born February 1st, 1995 at Fort Riley, Kansas, she was the daughter of Stephen R. and Annette W. Roberts. She graduated from General Brown High School and went on to work as a Health Aide for DPAO.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 pm on Wednesday the 14th of March at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home.

Melinda is survived by her parents, Stephen and Annette Roberts; her brother, Jason Roberts of Boothwyn, PA; her grandfather Rit Roberts and wife Claire Roberts of Friendship ME; her aunt and uncle Jessica and Nate Roberts of Friendship ME; her cousins Nathan, Emma and Zoe Roberts of Friendship ME; her Opa Adolph Wuerfel of Bietigheim Germany; her uncle Uwe Wuerfel of Bietigheim Germany; cousin Tim Hirschfeld of Bietigheim Germany. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins in Germany, South Africa and England.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandmother Beverly Roberts and maternal grandmother Annemarie Wuerfel.

Melinda was a very energetic girl who loved horseback riding and spending time with her family. She participated in all BRVHA shows winning numerous ribbons for her talents. She was loving and kind hearted and would help absolutely anyone who needed it. She loved to go mackerel fishing on grandpa’s boat and spend time at Bald Rock point on Friendship Long Island. She also loved to attend every carnival and fest with Opa Adolph, Uncle Uwe and Cousin Tim in Germany.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family which will go to The Epilepsy Foundation of America which is dedicated to the welfare of people with epilepsy and seizure disorders.
