Mattis, 98, formerly of Artz Rd., New Bremen, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Bethany Gardens in Rome, where she had been a resident since November 29, 2013./ppEsther was born on August 23, 1917, in the Town of New Bremen, NY, a daughter of William A. and Harriet G. Winneur Mattis. She graduated from Lowville Free Academy, Class of 1933, Potsdam State Normal, Class of 1936, and received her Master’s Degree in Education from St. Lawrence University in Canton, Class of 1950./ppDuring her early life, Miss Mattis taught in the Town of New Bremen rural schools. From 1941-1943, she taught elementary school on Shelter Island which was located off Long Island. In 1943, Ms. Mattis became employed by Beaver River Central School as an elementary teacher. She became the elementary school’s Supervising Principal in 1949 and retired from her educational career after twenty-nine years in 1972. /ppEsther was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, and attended St. John the Baptist Church in Rome. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association. Throughout her life she was an extremely active volunteer for various community groups within the area./ppSurviving are two nieces, Mary Wancewicz of Rome, and Anne Ellis of Raleigh, NC; a nephew, Mark Oberriter, of Rome, and several cousins. Esther was predeceased by her sister, Eva Mae Berning on June 18, 2014./ppFuneral services will be held on Tuesday April 12, 2016, beginning with an 11:30 AM Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by a 12:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Leo A. Wiley, retired Pastor of St. Stephen’s, officiating. DiPrinzio “Dippy” passed away April 7th, 2016 with family by his side at the age of 74 at Samaritan Medical Center after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia./ppThere will no calling hours. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton./ppCharles was born July 8th, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA, son of Angelo and Octavia “Tag” (Augustine) DiPrinzio (Prince). He graduated from Saint Thomas More High School. Charlie served in the United States Air Force from 1959-1963./ppOn November 9th, 1963 he married Diana R. Ebere at Sacred Heart Church in Chazy, NY. They had two boys Timothy and Christopher./ppHe worked for a short period at Sheridan Iron works in Champlain NY before beginning his long career, that started in 1965, with A.N. Deringer Inc., US Customs Brokers specializing in the Import/Export business. In 1981 he accepted an Assistant Manager Position in Alexandria Bay, then in 1987 moved to Buffalo NY as Manager. His career with A.N. Deringer spanned 38 years retiring in 2003./ppCharlie was a giving man; he loved to entertain and was accepting of everyone. His home was often a gathering place where you would have great food and conversation. He loved his BBQ grill and would cook everything on it. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, boating and always enjoyed finding great restaurants to experience. He was also a member of the American Legions in Champlain and then in Clayton./ppSurviving along with his wife Diana are two sons, Timothy A. (Julie) DiPrinzio, Bethlehem PA and Christopher S. (Shawn) DiPrinzio, Clayton NY. A sister Judy (Bill) Riebel, Charlottesville VA. Niece Stephanie (Bob) Ormsby, Columbia SC. pJames Robert Miller, 90, died Saturday morning, April 9, 2016 at the Samaritan Keep Home where he was a resident. Arrangements are with the Reed and Benoit Funeral Home. There are no calling hours and a graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family./ppJim was born July 30, 1925 in the town of Lacona, NY to Royal and Ruth White Miller. In 1942, he graduated from Brownville high school as salutatorian, and worked at the Brownville Paper Company. In September 1943, he was drafted into the army. In April 1944, he was sent to England to await D-Day. On June 15, 1944, he was sent with other men as replacements to France and joined the 90th division of the Third Army under General George Patton. /ppJim was in several major battles and many smaller ones. On Sunday, December 6, the men crossed the Saar river in assault boats. Official accounts state that heavy rains had flooded the Saar river and it became impossible to build a bridge across the river because of the swift current and heavy enemy shelling, making it impossible to get supplies across. The men lived on one third “K” rations daily and the only water came from shellholes and ditches. Many men had frozen feet. They were outnumbered 3 to 1, but held the line against many attacks. /ppOn December 11, 1944, he was wounded by a hand grenade during a German attack. He was first sent to a hospital in France and was transferred to a hospital in England, arriving on Christmas Eve./ppAfter the war ended, he was in the army of occupation and for a time was a guard at the concentration camp which was holding Nazi SS officers in Flossenburg, Germany. There he saw the crematorium ovens and piles of human ashes./ppJim was discharged January 6, 1946. His medals included the Marksman Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star European Campaign Medal with four stars for four campaigns, Army of Occupation Medal, NY State Medal for Services, and a Certificate of Recognition from the French government for his part in freeing France./ppOn August 14, 1948, he married Doris Humphrey of Watertown in the Stone Street Presbyterian Church officiated by Reverend Raabe. He worked many years at the Brownville Paper Company, and then was a postal clerk for the US post office./ppSurvivors include his wife of 67 years, Doris Miller; daughter Jeanne (John) Kentch, Chittenango, NY; son Stephen (Shelley) Miller, Piscataway, NJ; son David (Valerie) Miller, Wharton, NJ; grandchildren Katherine and Thomas Miller; three step grandchildren (Brian Henschel, Ingrid Johnson, and Sean Henschel); three step great-grandchildren (Connor Johnson, Alyson Johnson, and Emery Henschel); brother Michael (Louise) Miller, Webster, NY; brother-in-law Jack Davidson, Gouverneur, NY; sister Joanne Smith, Seneca Knolls, NY; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. Drew, 102, formerly of Massena, peacefully passed away early Saturday morning, April 9, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Home, in Ogdensburg./ppMargaret was born November 14, 1913 in Potsdam, daughter of the late Charles and Isabel Bix Andrus. She attended Carthage Schools, and was employed as a presser at Potsdam Laundry and Massena Laundry until retiring in 1976. She married Melvin J. Drew on April 10, 1946 at the Methodist Church in Potsdam with Rev. Roy officiating. Melvin predeceased her on September 5, 1977./ppShe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canton. Margaret was an avid reader and enjoyed embroidery sitting on her porch. She enjoyed traveling and lived in Arizona for a while. She loved her cats and dogs./ppMargaret is survived by several nieces and nephews, including her caregiver, Carter Houk of Canton./ppBesides her husband and parents, Margaret was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Esseltine; Geraldine Searles; and Irene McDonald; and her brother, William Andrus./ppAs per Margaret’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. She also received training through IBM in Syracuse./ppOn April 30, 1956, she married Lester Storie in Gouverneur. Lester died in September of 1987. A previous marriage to Arnold Cronk, which took place on June 20, 1946, was later dissolved./ppEleanor was a farmer’s wife, assisting in the day to day tasks of running the family dairy farm on the Eddy-Pyrites Road./ppSurviving are her her son, Wayne F. Cronk; her daughter, Dixie Storie; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Lester, she was predeceased by an infant son, Thomas; two grandchildren, Scott Cronk and William Delorme; two sisters, Bernice Powles and Grace Wright and two brothers, Maurice and Clarence Stacy. /ppHer family was part of the Pioneer Family in the early 1800’s that settled in DeKalb Junction with Judge Cooper of Cooperstown, NY. She was 85 years old./ppBorn in Watertown on September 25, 1930, the daughter of Edward Byron and Florence Hawley Ring. Irene had a zest for life. /ppShe married Donald “Moe” Hunt on September 12, 1959 at the East Side Church at Reverend Henry’s house and they embraced their union of 57 years until her passing. /ppIrene worked as a seamstress in her younger years at the Olga Knitting Mill. In 1963, She and her husband, Donald, opened a business out of their home known as Hunt’s Dive Shop and later expanded this business as Hunt Underwater Specialties to the Thousand Islands region having shops in Clayton and Alexandria Bay. This business was Irene’s passion and she loved spending her time at the shop in Clayton. /ppSurviving besides her husband, Donald are her 5 children: Cindy Walts, Watertown; Robin Thorne and her spouse, David Thorne, Sandy Creek; April Hunt, Watertown; Khristy Hunt, Watertown; and Khris Hunt and his spouse, Mary Hunt. Irene is also survived by her 8 grandchildren: Nicholas Walts and Andrew Walts, Dana Hunt, and his wife, Charlotte, Kaylee Hunt, Kaitlin Hunt, Kelsey Hunt, Kassidy Hunt and Konnor Hunt, a great granddaughter, Sara Hunt, a sister and brother-in-law, Bernice “Beanie” Jones and Edward “Dudley” Jones. Known for dedicating long extra working hours, Mrs. Scharf was a highly regarded and respected teacher during her career and was extremely loved by the hundreds of students whose lives she touched through the years./ppDoctors advised Katherine she would never have the ability to conceive children, yet she is survived by her loving son and only child Jason J. Mulligan, 65, of West Main st. died late Tuesday night at Lewis County Residential and Health Care Facilty, Lowville , surrounded by her family. /ppShe was born in Boonville Oct. 6, 1950, the daughter of Dayton and Thelma Kessler Thayer. She graduated from Adirondack Central school, Boonville in 1968; while in school she very much enjoyed being a member of the Junior & Senior Band, while in Senior band she was in two musicals and had also taken private piano lessons for several years. Upon graduating she attended Utica School of Commerce graduating in 1970. While in college she was on the Dean’s List and the President’s List. She worked for her parents from 1971 until 1981 at their restaurant, Hollands Diner in Port Leyden at which time it closed because of her mothers health./ppShe was employed as an executive secretary at NM Sargent’s and Sons, Inc. in Boonville for many years. /ppHer children and grandchildren were the center of her life. She and her husband loved trips to Alex Bay./pp She married Larry Mulligan Sept. 4, 1982 at Larry’s hunting camp with Rev. Luther Meekins, officiating He died Dec. 20, 2015../ppShe is survived by one daughter and son-in-law Christine and Raymond Williams of Carthage and one son Joshua Mulligan of Yorkville, two grandchildren Ayden and Jacob Williams of Carthage. A reception will be held at the Port Leyden Fire Hall following the funeral. Donations of food may be left at the hall after 11:00 AM./p
