pArchie V. Laverty, 83, Michigan Ave., Watertown passed away Monday afternoon, April 4, 2016 at Samaritan Medical Center./ppCalling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Friday, April 15, from 4 - 7PM. The celebration of the funeral mass will be Saturday, April 16, at 10AM at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Watertown with Rev. Jonas Tandayu, pastor, presiding and burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery./ppArch was born in Watertown on July 4, 1932, son of Archie and Ruth O’Reilly Laverty. Many people remember his father as one of the first pilots in the Watertown area. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1950, then attended the St. Lawrence College Center in Watertown and Cornell University. In later years he took several classes at Jefferson Community College./ppOn February 12, 1955 he married Roseanne Slack at St. Patrick’s Church, Watertown with Rev. Frederick P. Diviney officiating./ppHe was first hired to work in the Central Laboratory of the old St. Regis Paper Co. in October 1954 and continued with the succeeding companies. Archie retired from Champion International in 1990 as Technical Director./ppArch was proud to be an early and continuing participant in Credo, Watertown Urban Mission and the Celebration Singers with whom he played guitar. He also served on the Community Service Board, the Board of Directors of Jefferson County Public Health and was an active volunteer at Samaritan Medical Center./ppAfter surviving his first cardiac arrest and heart by-pass surgery, his enthusiasm for the benefits he experienced at the Samaritan Medical Center Cardiac Rehab program inspired him to help create the Heart Reach Program. The Program visits recovered heart patients and encourages newly diagnosed cardiac sufferers./ppA life-long ardent Brooklyn Dodgers fan, he never really accepted their transfer to Los Angeles. He grudgingly transferred his allegiance to the New York Mets. He was also a fan of the NFL’s NY Giants and NHL’s NY Rangers. Arch was an avid golfer but especially loved thoroughbred horse racing and delighted in an annual trip to the Saratoga Race Track with Rosie and dearest friends./ppAlong with his wife, Rosie, Arch is survived by his three children and their spouses, Melinda A. and Patrick M. McNamara, Ogdensburg, Amy C. and William R. O’Connor, Watertown, and Stephen D. and Nancy D. Laverty, Watertown; ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and three nieces. He was predeceased by his son, Kevin M. Laverty, January 18, 1996; his daughter, Carrie R. Endres, September 13, 1998; son-in-law, Robert J. “Little B” Endres, December 5, 2011; granddaughter, Christina L. O’Connor, March 1, 2011; sister, Sallie A. Webster, January 28, 2015; and nephew, David C. He met and married his wife of 51 years, Joanna (Sizemore) Sawyer. After marriage, he then began working at Newton Falls Paper Mill in Star Lake, NY. Together they have raised four children; Rhonda (John) Leslie of Tampa, FL, Rhoda Leigh Bowlin of Jensen Beach, FL, Rodney (Tabitha) Sawyer II of Windsor, SC and Johanna (Rueben Phillips) Panko of Aiken, SC. He has fifteen grandchildren, Phillip and Victoria Leslie, Ashlea Bowlin, Richard and Jacob Dibble, Jennah and Emmah Sawyer, Michelle and Gabriella Pettry, Alexis (Blake Richardson Sr.), James and Jason Emrich, Dominic Winum, Tucker and Abigail Phillips and one great grandson, Blake Richardson Jr. He is also survived by his mother, Mary Sawyer of Russell, NY; a sister, Judy (Charles) Tupper of Russell, NY and two brothers, Jerome “Buzz” (Susan) Sawyer of Hermon, NY and Richard (Donna) Sawyer Jr. of Gouverneur, NY./ppRodney is predeceased by his father, Richard Frances Sawyer Sr. and infant son that are both buried in the South Russell Cemetery./ppRodney loved the outdoors and enjoyed working with his hands. His talent to fix or build anything blessed many people. He dealt with people in a just and fair manner and “he owed no man”. /ppIn lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you plant a tree in his honor./p

Michael served in the United States Navy in 1964 during the Vietnam Conflict and worked on the PT Boats. He was honorably discharged in 1967. After Michael’s departure from the Navy, he first went to work at J & L Mines, then went to work for Newton Falls Paper Mill. Michael later joined the Local Carpenters and Joiners Union and held the positions of Project Manager and Supervisor. He also at one time worked for Champion Paper. Michael married Patricia Boyd on April 26, 1969, at the East Pitcairn Wesleyan Church with Rev. Elliott officiating./ppMichael was a past member of the Harrisville Fire Department and a member of the Greenwood Hunting Club. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hunting and fishing. One his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren. pStuart “Stu” Pierce, age 75, was called to the Lord on Wednesday, March 31, 2016, in Jacksonville Florida after a short battle with pneumonia. Born May 27, 1940 in Carthage, New York./ppUpon graduation from Carthage High he entered the US Navy and served in both the Mediterranean and Vietnam Theaters./ppAs a US Navy veteran, Stu settled in Jacksonville where he began a long and successful career in the automotive business. His love of the outdoors led him to explore the United States either on one of his beloved Harley’s or with his wife in their motorhome. /ppStu was a daily communicate at Christ The King Church in Jacksonville and an active member of parish organizations./ppHe is survived by his Wife of nine years, Laddie Lou Vincente Pierce, a Son, Stuart Pierce and his wife Julie of Atlanta,Georgia, two Daughters; Lei Lani Pierce Martin and her husband Al of Jacksonville, Florida and Rebecca Pierce, two grandchildren; Kaylyn Mallard and her husband Elliot, & Matthew Martin ,sisters; Carol Soucy of Mexico NY, Elaine Salvetti and husband Edward of Fulton NY, brothers; Phillip Pierce and his wife Lois of Jackson MO, Paul A. Richmond, 5 sisters, Eleanor Smith, Joan Hamilton, Joyce Smith, Helen Rendleman , Shirley Smith and 2 brothers, Gene and Dewey Smith. /ppShe was born in Henderson, November 18, 1940, a daughter to Floyd and Elsie Heaslip Smith. Edith was educated in Henderson. She married John (Jack) W. Richmond, October 17, 1963, Mr. Richmond died February 25, 1998./pp Edith started the Henderson Ladies Auxiliary, which just celebrated their 50th anniversary last month, and she was also very involved with the Historical Society in Henderson. Rush, 88, formerly of 24 Williams Street, peacefully passed away, Thursday afternoon, April 7, 2016, at the Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been admitted March 25, 2016./ppRoy was born December 2, 1927, in Massena Center, son of the late Silas and Gertrude Layo Rush. He was a graduate of Massena High School. Roy proudly served as a Yeoman Third Class in the US Navy from 1945 until 1946 when he was honorably discharged. He first married Annette Dufresne at St. Mary’s Church on June 10, 1950 with Father Nichols officiating. Annette predeceased him on December 28, 1954. He then married Rose C. Sabrey on April 12, 1958 at Notre Dame Church in Malone, with Father Lamitie officiating. Rose predeceased him on January 10, 2013./ppRoy worked in the Planning Department at Alcoa until his retirement in July of 1989. He was a member of local union #180. He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church, and member of the K of C St. Lawrence Council #1141. His passions were golfing and bowling, belonging to several leagues. He enjoyed playing pool and had won the NYS Billiards K of C Championship in 1977. He and Rose enjoyed many winters in Florida. /ppRoy is survived by his children, David Rush of Wappingers Falls; Daniel and Jackie Rush of Massena; Stephanie and Charles Massarelli of Poughkeepsie; Craig and Barbara Rush of Lexington, KY; and Lisa and Rick Tinson of Glastonbury, CT; 11 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several dear nieces and nephews. /ppRoy was predeceased by five brothers, Carl S. Rush; Leon Rush; Lyle Rush; Cecil Rush; Lloyd Rush; and one sister Olive Sorenson./ppFriends may call Sunday 1-4 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Mark Reilly celebrating. She enjoyed raising horses, camping, waterskiing, boating and traveling. pTurin- Shirley A. (Kellogg) Joslin, wife of Charles F. a lifelong resident of the Town of Turin, and more recently of Brookside Senior Living Center, Lowville, passed away at her home while surrounded by the loving care of her family and hospice on Thursday, April 7, 2016./ppA native of the Town of Turin, Shirley was born on February 20, 1938, a daughter of James F. and Viola Rudd Kellogg. She attended Turin Union School through 6th grade, completing her education at General Martin Central School, Glenfield, where she graduated with the Class of 1956. For fourteen years thereafter, Mrs. Joslin was employed for Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service of Lowville./ppOn December 7, 1957, Shirley was united in marriage with Charles F. Joslin at the First Presbyterian Church, Boonville. After that the couple settled in Turin and Shirley assumed the role of mother raising her family. /ppIn the 1970’s Mrs. Joslin was elected Town Clerk and Tax Collector for the Town of Turin, also serving as Village Clerk for five years. In addition, Shirley served on the Turin Town Board making a total of 25 years of dedicated service to the Town of Turin. For many years she was Historian for the Town of Turin. /ppLater, for many years Mrs. Joslin was employed as Pay Roll Clerk for the Lord-Bec Power Co. Port Leyden, during the construction of the 765 K-V Powerline through Northern New York. Her last employment was as an Account Clerk at Howard G. Sackett Center BOCES, Glenfield, retiring in July, 1996, after 17 years of service. /ppShirley is survived by her husband, Charles, her son Samuel (Wanda) Joslin, Croghan, and grandchildren Riley, Kirsten and Cooper Joslin. She was predeceased by her daughter Jayna M. Kent on October 24, 2015. Also surviving is her son-in-law John Kent, Rome, a sister Beverly (Walt) Kinel, Port Leyden, and brothers Russell Kellogg, Lowville, Ervin (Christine) Kellogg, Leeds, Carl Kellogg, Constableville, and Charles (Evelyn) Kellogg, Dickson, TX. She was predeceased by her brothers: Richard, Lloyd, and Harold, and her sister Loretta Hill. /ppFuneral Services will be held on Monday April 11, at 12:00 noon at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Interment will follow in Turin Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 5-8, and again on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Auger officiating./ppShe was employed at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center as a Mental Hygiene Therapy Aide from 1968 – 2002.
