DALE ALBERT KENYON passed away peacefully on October 18, 2018 at his home in Clayton, NY from natural causes. Born in Watertown, NY to George William Kenyon and Ruth Skinner Kenyon on September 6, 1939, Dale graduated from Clayton Central School in 1957 and Clarkson University in 1962 with a bachelors degree in business administration. During Dale’s career he worked for Frink America in Clayton, New York Air Brake Corp. in Watertown, Viking-Cives USA in Harrisville and, for many years, for Gray’s Wholesale Inc. in Clayton, NY.

As a young child, Dale was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis. This disease stunted his height and presented lifelong challenges. His first major trip from Clayton was in 1953 when he traveled by train with his Boy Scout Troop 46 to Oceanside, CA to attend the national jamboree. Forever supportive of the Boy Scout organization, he was the Troop 46 Scoutmaster for 17 years, taking the troop to the National Jamboree in the 1970’s. For that event he constructed a very large replica of the Thousand Islands Bridge which was used as the entry feature for the entire event. He was recognized by the Boy Scout organization for exceptional service to the council when he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in the 1990’s.

Community service was very important to Dale. He was elected Mayor of the Village of Clayton for 10 years and a Town of Clayton board member for several years, participating in the reenactment of the signing of the Town of Clayton charter on its sesquicentennial anniversary in 1983. He was a member of the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years including several decades as Treasurer. He led the construction for the Thousand Islands Arts Center addition at 314 John Street to accommodate the handweaving center, and has been an active board member for the Thousand Islands Museum, Antique Boat Museum, Clayton Cemetery Association, The Clayton Opera House, Jefferson County Planning Board, Clarkson University Delta Upsilon Chapter, The Thousand Islands Foundation, Inc. and TIERS.

Dale is survived by his brother, Damon (Susan) Kenyon, Clayton, sister, Ann Storandt of Lake George, NY and Fort Pierce, FL, nieces Karen Kenyon Mitchell (VA) and Barbara Storandt (WI), nephews William Kenyon (VA) and David Storandt (Clayton) and their families.

There will be no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Contributions in his memory may be made to TIERS, 885 Graves Street, Clayton, NY 13624. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton and online condolences to his family may be posted at www.cummingsfuneral.com.

Marcia Smith

Marcia Smith, 83, of Watertown, passed peacefully on Thursday, October 18th, 2018 at Samaritan Medical Center after a short illness.

Calling hours will be Sunday October 21st from 1 pm - 4 pm at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, with a 10:30am funeral service on Monday the 22nd. Burial will follow in the Black River Cemetery.

She was born in Carthage, NY on April 27th, 1935, the daughter of Herman L Zahn, Sr. and Vera Weir Zahn. She was predeceased by her older brother Herman L Zahn, Jr, and is survived by her brother Donald W. Zahn, Watertown, and her son, Dr. Patrick B Smith, Liverpool, NY. She was married to Paul T Smith, in 1969, which later ended in divorce.

Marcia attended Syracuse University and graduated with a BA in English in 1958, and a master’s from Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College in 1962. She had a long and successful teaching career in high school English at South Jefferson Central School in Adams, NY from 1958 through 1998. Project Advance, sponsored by Syracuse University, and AP English were interests in her career and she thoroughly enjoyed these opportunities for her and her students. She was very proud of her English Teacher of Excellence Award from the NYS English Council in 1989. Marcia exemplified educational professionalism and she had high expectations for her students. She loved to teach, and she let her love of literature guide the class.

Through her years as a teacher, she connected and touched many lives. How many people have composed a letter or read an article and heard her voice in the back of their head say, “is that spelled correctly? Is your punctuation correct?” In retirement, Marcia enjoyed many home projects; decorating, landscaping, gardening and baking. She enjoyed being outdoors and she was always eager to mow her lawn, even if it was brown, because there was always a weed somewhere.

She was very loyal to her friends and enjoyed her time spent reminiscing and planning small trips. Her love of her dogs was always worn on her sleeve. She always had pictures to show you from her pocketbook.

Marcia’s retirement years included volunteering at the Samaritan Medical Center information desk. She spent 19 years greeting and guiding visitors coming to the hospital and renewed many friendships from the past including so many of her former students who thought so much of their teacher. She appreciated the kind words and encouragement from these former students as they would recount a story about a memory from their days with her as their teacher. Her greatest accomplishment, she would admit, is her son. So very proud of his accomplishments and the time they spent together over the years. Her devotion and constant concern helped forge a strong relationship that carried her through her later years as she battled COPD. Her son will, of course, miss her most of all after having shared so many highs and lows in their lives together.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Black River Ambulance Squad, 121 Leray St., Black River, NY 13612.
