Martha Anne Wood

Martha Anne Wood, 71, of Mooresville, NC, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2018 at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, NC.

She was born on September 11, 1947 in Potsdam, NY, to the late Harold and Catherine Haley Wood. Ms. Wood enjoyed attending performing arts, reading, taking care of her great nephews and pet sitting Sammy the crazy dog. She worked for Babbitt Barring in Human Resources and as an Assistant Office Manager for over 29 years and also worked for a local company for several years in management.

She is survived by her sisters, Joan Coombe (Louis), Mary Beth Johnston; brother, John Wood (Alice); four nieces, two nephews, and four great nephews who gave her great joy.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 7, 2018 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Cavin-Cook Funeral Home. Burial of the cremated remains will follow the service in Glenwood Memorial Park.

Flora McLear, Port St. Lucie, Florida passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 3:40 PM at her home. Flora was a native of the Adirondacks, New York. She married Vacek Sulongski on June 7th, 1941. They had two daughters, Phyllis (Russell) and Priscilla (Bond). Phyllis died June 1979.

She had a rooming house in Star Lake, New York for several years, where she had school teachers and construction workers as boarders.

Flora worked at Clifton-Fine Central School for 26 years in food service, retiring in 1978.

She helped disadvantaged children, visited the sick and elderly, enjoyed card games, knitting, baking, and using the computer.

Flora and Vacek made their winter home in Clearwater, Florida in 1983. Vacek died July 1985 in Star Lake.

In September 1986, she married George McLear of Warren, Michigan, an old friend of 27 years, who was originally from Oswegatchie, New York. They made their winter home in Port St. Lucie, Florida where he died in January 1991.

Flora was a member of American Legion Auxiliary 0318 of Port St. Lucie.

Flora had 2 caretakers, Bill Wolf and Diane Wall.

Surviving, is her daughter, Priscilla Bond (Vern) of Massena, New York; seven grandsons, Richard Russell, Harrisville, New York, Joel Russell, Cape Coral, Florida, David Russell, San Angelo, Texas, Angus LaDue, North Rose, New York, Brian LaDue, Palmyra, New York, Preston Bond, Fulton, New York, Jeffery Bond, Fort Drum, New York; six great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; sister, Clara.

Flora will be cremated at her request. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 24th from 1-3 at the Hawley Funeral Home in Star Lake, New York, with a funeral to follow at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.

LOWVILLE — Lois E. Virkler, 90, of East State Street, Lowville, died Sunday, November 18, 2018 at her home, under the loving care of her family and Lewis County Hospice.

The funeral will be Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Apostolic Christian Church of America, Croghan, with ministers of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Apostolic Christian Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, November 20, 2018 from 1–3 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Cathy and Clifford Lehman of Castorland; Steven and Yvonne Virkler of Lowville; James Virkler of Lowville; Chris and Susan Virkler of Croghan; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins, and a sister-in-law, Mavis Mattoon of Spokane, WA. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Clyde F. Virkler, who died on August 3, 2010; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Everett and Onalee Mattoon and Leslie Mattoon.

Mrs. Virkler was born on June 4, 1928 in Hermon, New York, a daughter of the late James and Grace Jeffers Mattoon. She graduated from Hermon High School in 1945 and attended Watertown School of Commerce and worked as a clerk/typist for Watertown Times. On April 19, 1952, she married Clyde F. Virkler at Gouverneur United Methodist Church, with Rev. William Wood officiating. Together with her husband, the couple purchased the family dairy farm in 1952, and operated the farm on the River Road until 1983, upon retirement. The farm is now owned by their two sons and daughter-in-law, Steven and Yvonne Virkler and James Virkler.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Virkler was a member of Apostolic Christian Church of America, Croghan.

Stephen MacDonald Kendall

Stephen MacDonald Kendall, 62, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 4 at his home in Petaluma, CA. He battled briefly with a very rare form of cancer. Steve was born on May 28, 1956 in Watertown, NY to attorney Frederic and Mimi (Reilly) Kendall.

Throughout his life, Steve displayed a high degree of intellectual curiosity. Steve graduated from Deerfield Academy in Deerfield MA in 1974. After Deerfield, Steve attended the University of Grenoble in Grenoble, France. Later, Steve attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY where Steve received a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree in East Asian Studies in 1979. In 1980, Steve received an MBA degree from INSEAD in Fontainebleau France.

Steve was fluent in Japanese and French, and maintained a lifelong interest in the cultures of Japan and Asia. Steve began his investment banking career in New York at Smith Barney, and later Steve held a senior position in the company’s Tokyo Branch, as well as at Credit Suisse First Boston. With his uncle James McCormick, Steve was co-founder of a consulting firm representing companies that desired to conduct business in Japan with offices in New York, New Hampshire and Tokyo, after which Steve established and headed Cheyenne Software’s Asian operations out of its Singapore office, and also established software NetIQ’s Asia operations. Upon the tragic death of his son Jonathan, in 2007, Steve resolved to dedicate his life to helping others. Steve began serving as a Deputy Sheriff in San Francisco in 2008, including establishing a meditation group for violent inmates.

Steve very much enjoyed growing up and spending summers at the family cottage in the 1000 Islands in Thousand Island Park, NY. Steve liked swimming, boating, and spending time with his friends and family while at the River.

Steve was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas of Watertown, NY; his son, Jonathan of Petaluma, CA; his father, Frederic of Watertown, NY; and his former father-n-law, Walter J. Mulder of The Hague, Netherlands. Steve is survived by his spouse Elizabeth Shelton of Petaluma, CA; his former wife for 30 years, Evelyn of Rohnert Park, CA; his son, Ian Kendall of Rohnert Park, CA; his mother, Mimi Kendall of Watertown, NY; his former mother-in-law Annemarie Mulder of Monte Alto Brazil; his brother Jonathan (Patty) of Omaha, NE; his sister Susan of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; his grandson, Jonathan of San Francisco, CA); his nieces, Jennifer Hatcher and Kathleen Kendall of Omaha, NE; his nephew, Sean Kendall of Omaha, NE; and his niece Caitie Steen of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.

A summer memorial service will be held in the 1000 Islands in NY. This service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are made to the following foundation.

Richville - Archie M. Whitton, Jr., 74, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2018 in Burlington, Vermont.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 24th from 10:00 to 11:30 am with a funeral service at 11:30 am at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with David Hart officiating and burial to follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Richville. A celebration of life will be held immediately following at the Hermon Fire Hall.

Archie was born in Gouverneur on September 1, 1944, the son of Archie M. and Mae Clark Whitton.

He graduated from Hermon-DeKalb Central School in 1962 and served in the United States Army for 3 years, including a tour in Germany.

Archie married his beloved “Lin”, Linda L. Allen on December 29, 1964 at Edwards United Methodist Church parsonage.

Archie served a mason apprenticeship and worked as a self employed mason for over 40 years. He and his family also operated a dairy farm, and he had a love for all animals. He enjoyed playing the guitar in his younger years, collecting antique furniture, Humel figurines, and coins. Archie also enjoyed watching his programs on RFD TV, listening to country music, attending social events with his wife, visiting, especially on the telephone, with family and friends. He enjoyed spending time and taking rides with his best dog Possum and all the dogs that came before. Archie never knew a stranger, he was generous with his skills and helped anyone in need. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his reminiscing stories, and the love he had for his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Linda, his children Michael and Adena Whitton of Leander, TX, Paul and Cheri Whitton of Richville, Amanda and Jim Abrantes of Lake George, Nichole and Jay Morse of Richville, 12 grandchildren, Corey, Cole, Alexa, Annatashia (Dave), Kylie, Nick, Brandon (Shawna), Brianne (Kyle), Brady, Jared (Gabbi), Kyle and Emma, and 6 great grandchildren, Owen, Landon, Adaline, Lara, Elijah, and Emberlynn. Archie is also survived by his siblings James and Karen Whitton of Richville, David Whitton and Doreen Love of Gouverneur, Gwendolyn and Phil Law of Depeyster, Marlene and Gary Jefferson of Richville, Ann Goodale of Troy, several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations in Archie’s memory are encouraged to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation.

Dale A. Steele

Dale A. Steele passed away Saturday, November 17th at his home. He was 81 years old.

Dale was born January, 2, 1937 the son to the late Ward and Thelma Castor Steele. He graduated from Mannsville- Manor Central School in 1955. Dale married Elsie Nemier at the Union Church Parsonage, Pierrepont Manor on April, 19, 1957.

He worked for General Electric, Syracuse, for 21 years and at the Miller Brewery, Fulton for 18 years, retiring in 1994. Most recently he enjoyed the time he worked for Hi-Lite, Adams Center. He was a dog control officer for the townships of Sandy Creek and Richland for several years and served as councilman for the Town of Ellisburg from 1975 to 1982.

Dale was a member of Union Church and Pierrepont Manor Improvement Club and he was also involved for several years with the Mannsville-Manor Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie, Pierrepont Manor; a daughter, JoAnne (Gene) Barkley, Pierrepont Manor; daughter-in-law, Jodi Steele, Adams; grandchildren, Brian (Briana) Tario, Corey (Alexandria) Barkley, Kyle Steele, Kraig Steele and a great-granddaughter, Kaycee Tario. Also surviving is his sister Joan Miller and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son Barry, grandson Kirk, 2 sisters, Phyllis Parker and Elaine Babbitt.

The memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Friday, November 23rd at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville, with Pastor David Rudd officiating. Calling hours will be prior to the service at the funeral home from 1 pm-4 pm.

John Frederick Greene

John Frederick Greene, 89, Mannsville, NY passed away in the early hours of Friday, November 16, 2018 while in Zephyrhills, Florida.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 24th at 12:00 Noon at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home in Belleville, New York. Calling hours will be prior to the service from 10am-12pm at the funeral home.

John was born at home on the farm in the town of Acram, Columbia County, NY on May 25, 1929 to Ruth Shaffer and John Dempsy Greene. John graduated from Pine Plains Central School, Dutchess County, where he was active in the FFA and sports. He loved farming and his first job after graduation was managing a farm in Dutchess County. Next he followed his father’s footsteps into employment with the Borden Milk Company as a Dairy Inspector working in the Cortland-Marathon area of New York. Soon he was drafted into the army where he served states-side for two years during the Korean War. While stationed in Alabama, he met his wife, Ruby Dell Goodson. They married on December 29, 1952 and upon his discharge resumed work with Borden’s moving to Middlebury, Vermont where his two children were born. In 1958 John and family moved to Burrville, then Adams Center, Jefferson County, NY where he continued with Borden’s at the Watertown, Adam’s, Cape Vincent and Mexico milk plants. He retired from Borden’s after 40 years and continued to work with other milk companies across the state for a few years.

In November 2000 John’s first wife, Dell, passed away after an extended illness. After a long winter alone, John, who thoroughly enjoyed music and dance ventured out to a senior dance at the State Office Building in Watertown. There he met Audrey Austin and soon a courtship commenced. They were married July 10, 2002, living summers in Mannsville, NY and winters in Zephyrhills, Florida.

John had been an active volunteer in several organizations: the NYS Sanitarians, American Legion, and Snow Pals Snowmobile Club. He was very active for 58 years with the South Jefferson Lion’s Club, holding a variety of offices and traveling to many International conventions. He also received recognition in 2018 for 75 years of membership in the Grange.

John was predeceased by Dell, his first wife of 44 years, and his brother, Robert D. Greene, Palmyra, PA.

He is survived by his second wife of 17 years, Audrey Austin, Mannsville; two sisters: Joan (Bill) Smith and Sandra Greene of Hanover, PA.; son, John Stuart (Anne) Greene, Adams Center; Daughter, Karen (Jim) Rice, Endicott; Grandchildren: Morgan (Paul) Fiegl, Henderson; John Hunter (Connie) Greene, Sacramento, CA; Joel (Kristi) Rice, North Vernon, IN; Mike (Stephanie) Rice Endwell; Andrew (Amanda) Rice, Newark Valley; Timothy (Emily) Rice, Vestal and 14 great grandchildren.

John was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, a good friend and neighbor to everyone he met.

Dewey B. Farmer

Dewey B. Farmer, 88, of Clayton passed away Sunday morning, November 18, 2018, at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton on Sunday, November 25, from 2 - 5 PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church on Monday, November 26, at 11 AM with Rev. Arthur J. LaBaff, pastor, presiding followed by burial and military honors in Sackets Harbor Military Cemetery.

Dewey was born in Watertown on April 17, 1930, son of Dewey and Grace A. Heard Farmer and he was educated in Watertown schools. He joined the Naval Reserves and was called to active duty on August 7, 1951. He was proud of his service aboard the USS Krishna and was honorably discharged on June 26, 1953.

He married Sally A. Brabant on June 27, 1959 at St. Mary’s Church with Fr. Lawrence Deno officiating.

Dewey worked in the Saturation Department at Knowlton Bros., Watertown for 13 years. He began his 23 year career as a custodian at Clayton Central School and then at 1000 Islands High School and retired as Senior Custodian. After his retirement he worked for Gray’s Wholesale in several capacities for 7 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church. In his younger years he was a member of the Boy Scouts. Dewey was a 20 year active member of the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department and currently was an exempt member. He was a 48 year member of the American Legion Colon-Couch Post 821. He enjoyed being a handyman, working with wood and mechanics, and also any type of remodeling. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Along with his wife, Sally, Dewey is survived by his three children, Debra M. Farmer, John D. Farmer and wife, Mary, and Robert F. Farmer and wife, Amy, all of Clayton; four grandchildren, Joshua, Nicole, Tyler, and Kristin; two great grandchildren, Ariah and Remi; brother, Richard Farmer and wife, Dorothy, Fairport; sister, June A. Farmer Champney, Albany; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Andrew Bissonette

Andrew Bissonette of Oswego, NY, died on Friday November 9, 2018, at the home of his son Eric, surrounded by his wife, Marla S, and immediate family in Afton, VA. He was 67 years old. He was born to the late Floyd J. and Marjorie I. Cross Bissonette on August 7, 1951 in Massena NY.

Andy is survived by his wife Marla, son Eric and two grandchildren, Sophie and Nathaniel. Also, by his sister, Leslie Hamilton of Brasher Falls; his brothers, Floyd and Mary Bissonette of Norfolk, William and Elizabeth Bissonette of Knoxville, Tennessee, Daniel and Ruth Bissonette of Brasher Iron Works, and Vernon and Sue Bissonette of Cranberry Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

Andrew was predeceased by his mother Marjorie on February 3, 1990, his father Floyd on March 17, 1992, a sister, Laurel M. Bissonette, on December 13, 2013 and two brothers, Donald T. Bissonette on May 27, 1967, and Frederick C. Bissonette on May 9, 2011.

Andy was brought into a loving family which included 2 sisters and 7 brothers. He graduated from St. Lawrence Central Schools in 1970. In 1973 he married his childhood sweetheart, Marla McCargar. They were married for 45 years until his passing, and together they had 1 son, Eric Bissonette.

Andy worked as an IBEW Electrician around the country but spent most of his working years in nuclear energy in all 3 reactors at Nine Mile Point in Oswego, NY. A unique soul, Andy had a complex and unforgettable sense of humor, and enjoyed being outdoors, including: fishing, hunting, golfing, growing vegetables, feeding any animal that came to his backyard, and going for walks in the mountains with his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Calling hours will be held at Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop from 2-4PM on Saturday November 24, 2018, followed by a reception at the American Legion in Winthrop NY.

Lynn E. Holthouse

Lynn E. Holthouse, age 68, a man of strong will and strong faith, and a resident of Pulaski since 1960, passed away Sunday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. Lynn was born July 23, 1950 in Oswego, the son of Milton and Barbara Church Holthouse. He was born with a congenital heart disorder but defied the medical odds to live a full and productive life. He graduated from Pulaski Central School in 1968 and attended Alfred State University. Lynn married Judith Isham on July 8, 1989. He began working at Constellation Nuclear in 1986 and became a licensed reactor operator in 1992, where he continued to work until his retirement in 2002. He previously owned K & L Shoe Store in Pulaski and the Pulaski Department Store. Lynn was a former member and President of the Pulaski Kiwanis Club. He was a member and Deacon of the Pulaski Baptist Church. Lynn was also a member of the Monday and Wednesday night golf league at the Elms Golf Course.

Surviving are his wife, Judith, two sons, Matthew Holthouse of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, and Adam (Ashley) Holthouse of Cumming, GA, one daughter, Rachel Cerulli of Cape Cod, MA, two step-daughters, Sharron (John) Oakes of Pulaski and Monica (Rick) Borczuk of Liverpool, one stepson, Paul (Shannon) Isham of Oswego, one brother, Gary Holthouse of Stillwater, MN, and one sister Barbara (Jim) Gayne of Altmar and 14 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 27th at the Pulaski Baptist Church, 7 Bridge Street, Pulaski, NY 13142 with burial in Pulaski Cemetery. Sandra J. Barney, 75, Adams Center, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 17th at her home with her husband and daughters at her side.

Sandra was born November 15, 1943 in Watertown, NY to Gordon G. and Jean Lane Shutts. She graduated from Henderson Central School in 1962, attended the Watertown School of Commerce, and went on to earn her Associate in Arts degree from Jefferson Community College in 1986. Sandra married David A. Barney on October 6, 1962 at the Henderson United Methodist Church.

Dedicated to helping people meet their highest potential, Sandra guided generations of students during her career, which began at the South Jefferson Central School District. Upon her employment with Jefferson-Lewis BOCES, she provided career guidance counseling to students attending the South Jefferson Central School and Belleville-Henderson Central School Districts. Sandra also was an Adjunct Advisor in the Advising, Career, and Transfer Center at Jefferson Community College.

Sandra was a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars, and a leader and member of the Home Bureau. She enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, baking and cooking, interior decorating, and her flower gardens. Sandra’s husband, children and grandchildren were her heart and joy, and she was theirs, with much time spent taking family trips and sunset drives, attending music concerts and sporting events, and relaxing at the lake. She was a loving, and much loved, wife, mother, grandmother, sibling, aunt, and friend.

She is survived by her husband, David, Adams Center, two daughters, Julie Barney, Guilderland, NY; Deanna (Kevin) Barney-Sischo, Guilderland, NY; her grandchildren, Emily and Andrew Sischo, two sisters, Jo Ann (Thomas) Murphy and Cheryl Babcock, and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to the medical professionals and staff at Samaritan’s Oncology Hematology practice (formerly North Country Oncology and Hematology), Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Samaritan Medical Center, and Hospice of Jefferson County.

The memorial service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, November 28th at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville, with Pastor Cathy Hamilton officiating. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 27th from 3 pm - 7 pm.
