Marion N. Twining

HAILESBORO — Marion N. Twining, 84, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Gouverneur Hospital with her family at her side.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 19th at 11:00 am at North Syracuse Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Marion was born on October 1, 1934 in Talcville, the daughter of Vernon and Mary (Girard) Lutz.

She graduated from Edwards High School in 1950 and attended business school in Watertown.

Marion married William J. Twining in September 1999. She previously was married to Oscar Bunch who predeceased her.

She worked many years as an accountant, over 30 years at CIVES Steel Corporation and more recently at Structural Associates in Watertown.

Marion enjoyed her plants and was very active outdoors, often found cross-country skiing, walking with her friends, and even rollerblading later in life. She was also active in her community, volunteering at the Gouverneur Library and local cancer associations.

Marion is survived by her husband Bill, her children Katheen and Richard Williams of Florida, Terry and Robin Bunch of Syracuse, Debra and Dennis D’Alfonso of Florida, Paul and Christine Sgroi Bunch of Central Square, Craig Bunch of Cicero, two stepsons Ashley Twining and John Twining, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Henry “Sonny” Lutz, Donna Barlow, Sue “Lila” Hale, Bonnie Seaman, Gary Lutz, and Jacquelin “Jackie” Prashaw, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and her siblings Vernon Lutz Jr., Betty Dwyer, Virginia Mussaw, Shirley Sheen, and Bert Lutz.

Carol J. Ambrose

Carol J. Ambrose, 84, of 185 Maple Street, Black River, NY passed away March 17, 2019 at the Carthage Area Hospital surrounded by her loving children.

Born on December 6, 1934 in Black River, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Viola W. Duell Forbes. She attended Calcium Elementary School and then graduated from Black River High School in 1952. She graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. She received Nurse Clinician Training at Community General Hospital in Syracuse, NY in 1973.

On July 23, 1955 she married Dennis C. Ambrose at the Black River Methodist Church with the Rev. Vernon C. Nichols officiating. They renewed their wedding vows on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary, July 23, 2005. The couple resided in Black River.

Mrs. Ambrose worked at Mercy Hospital and Madonna Home of Mercy Hospital for over 30 years, retiring in 1989 as Assistant Director of Nursing Service and In-service Instructor.

Mr. Ambrose worked for NY Airbrake for 35 years where he was a hydraulic lab tester. He retired in March 1988. Mr. Ambrose passed away March 14, 2012.

Mrs. Ambrose was a member of the Mercy Hospital Alumnae Association, the Kamargo Association, and VFW Ladies Auxiliary 7227, Carthage. She was a charter member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 5218, Black River where she held many offices including President and Secretary. Carol was also Past President of Mohawk Adirondack Counties Council VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She and her husband received the Black River Citizens Award for work on the Korean War Monument in the village in 2003. She was an exempt member of the Black River Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the First Baptist Churches, in Carthage, NY and Black River, NY.

Mrs. Ambrose was an active bowler for over 20 years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, quilting, genealogy research and traveling.

She is survived by 5 daughters and 3 sons-in-law, Kathleen M. and Alan C. Beattie, Rodman, NY, Wendy L. and John C. Harvey, Massena, NY, Christy L. and Norman (Bill) Jones, Carthage, NY, Karen L. Ambrose, Black River, NY and Michelle G. Canfield, Oswego, NY, a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory V. and Sharri L. Ambrose, Dell Rapids, S.D., 9 grandchildren, Christine Harvey, Rebecca Harvey, Katie Jones, Casey Jones, Charles Canfield, Andrew Canfield, Joshua Ambrose, Ashley Ambrose and Zachary Ambrose, a sister and brothers-in-law, Jacqueline M. and Richard Griffin, IL, a brother and sister-in-law, Guy D. and Harriett Forbes, Watertown, NY, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Sharon Lynn Ambrose (August 19, 1961), 7 sisters: Jeannine E. Perry, C. Lorraine Ambrose, Charmaine J. Kidder, Denise M. Whattam, Janice M. Dwyer, Patricia D. Polston, and C. Suzanne Crowder, 6 brothers, Jean F. Forbes, Gaylord D. Forbes, Dale R. Forbes, Gerald K. Forbes, Dennis M. Forbes, and Michael V. Forbes.

Arrangements are with the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. Friends may call at the funeral Home on Saturday, March 23 from 10 a.m. until Noon. A funeral service will follow the calling hours at Noon, at the funeral home, with Rev. Mary Drake officiating. Burial will follow in the Black River Cemetery.

The Ambrose family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Carthage Area Hospital for their professionalism, special care and all the kindness given to their mother.

Rosemary T. Fazio

Rosemary T. Fazio, 93, of Watertown passed away at her home surrounded by family and under the care of Hospice on Sunday evening, March 17, 2019.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Friday, March 22, from 4 - 7 pm. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Church on Saturday, March 23, at noon with Rev. Christopher Looby, pastor, presiding, followed by burial in Glenwood Cemetery.

Rosemary was born in Watertown on July 31, 1925, the daughter of Francis and Anna Netto Tauroney. She was a 1943 graduate of Watertown High School. On Mary 26, 1956 she married Peter Fazio, Jr. at St. Anthony’s Church. Mr. Fazio passed away on October 27, 2016.

She began her career as a legal secretary at Green, Wolfbaum & Ernest Law Firm in Manhattan. After returning to Watertown, she worked for Attorney Ted Charlebois and later retired from Mott & Wiltse Law Firm. She was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Rosemary was a past president and member of the Italian American Civic Association Ladies Auxiliary and was very active with Bravo Fest.

She is survived by her three children, Peter J. Fazio, Watertown, Susan F. Holeman and husband, E. Roy, Guffin Bay, and Steven M. Fazio and wife, Ellen, Penn Yan; eight grandchildren, Amy McMurchie, Danielle Cosey, Sean Fazio, Elizabeth Lewis, Jacob Holeman, Lucas Holeman, Nicholas Fazio, and Sara Fazio; nine great grandchildren; sister, Ret. Col. Teresa J. Tauroney, Melbourne, FL. Along with her husband, Rosemary was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Kim Le Fazio and brother, Francis Tauroney.

Robert T. “Bob” Matthie Sr.

SOUTH COLTON – Funeral services for 84 year old Robert T. “Bob” Matthie Sr., a resident of 456 A East Hill Road, South Colton, will be held Thursday, March 21, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton with Pastor Tom Chappell presiding. Burial will be held in the Pleasant Mound Cemetery in the springtime. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of the services. Mr. Matthie passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at home with family at his side.

Bob is survived by his children Terry, Gary, Tim, John, Donna and Linda; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his three sisters, Daisy Wagstaff, Rose Akley and Cherry Hennessy and a half brother, Wayne Bump, Newton Falls as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members. Bob was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife Lorena, a son Robert Matthie Jr., two daughters, Barbara and Lorena Ann and his brothers Clarence, Martin, Wesley, Richard and Clayton.

Born in South Colton, NY on November 7, 1934 to the late William Frank Matthie and Hazel Martin, Bob later married Lorena Irish. Lorena passed away in 2010. Bob was a self-employed handyman all his life. He enjoyed being outdoors cutting wood and worked for many years for several cemeteries as the caretaker. Roberta (Bobbe) Helene Frank Katzman

Roberta (Bobbe) Helene Frank Katzman died peacefully on March 6, 2019 in Sibley Hospital, Washington, D.C. Bobbe was married to Lawrence (Laddie) Katzman until his death in 2001. She is survived by their children, Laurie, Ned (Lisa) and Scott (Sandy) as well as six grandchildren.

Bobbe was born April 25, 1927 in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of Sarah (Sadie) and Henry Frank. She had two sisters, Arlene Frank Liberman (Myron) and Shirley Frank Doroff (Ben). She graduated from Syracuse University.

Bobbe loved living in Watertown and was a very active member of the community including terms as President of both the Sisterhood and Hadassah organizations at the Degel Israel Synagogue. She volunteered at the House of Good Samaritan gift shop. She loved her many bridge games, tennis matches and bowling leagues. She was an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed forever.

Celia Ruth Virkler

LOWVILLE - Celia Ruth Virkler, 83, formerly of Croghan, peacefully passed this life Monday morning, March 18, 2019 at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.

Celia was born on November 23, 1935 in New Bremen daughter of the late Leslie and Harriet M. (Crouse) Beck, Sr. Celia attended Beaver River Central School. She was united in married with Lowell Richard Virkler on September 5, 1953 in Castorland. The couple owned and operated dairy farm on the Kirschnerville Road in Croghan for 25 years. They also owned and operated a sugarbush for many years. They were blessed with three children, Linda, Loren and Linette. Celia and Lowell hosted many dinners and gatherings for family and friends at their farm, at the sugarbush, at the lake and “at the creek” over the years. Upon retiring from the farm, the couple moved to a home on Route 812 in Croghan and later spent many years together in their apartment at Steepleview Courts. Celia joined her husband at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility in 2016. Celia’s beloved husband Lowell passed away on December 22, 2017. They celebrated 64 years of marriage and were an unwavering example of devotion for their children and grandchildren. Her love for the Lord and her love for her family will long be remembered.

Surviving are her two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda (Floyd Jr.) Graves of Croghan; Linette (Joseph) Bush of Lowville; her grandchildren, Holly (Joseph) Aucter, Hope Graves, Brian (Danielle) Graves, Buffy (Kevin) Pelo, Bradley (Bryn) Virkler, Jay Virkler, Daniel Virkler, Ambrose (Alyssa) Bush and Amos (Racheal) Bush; “Mema Celia” will be greatly missed be her many beloved great grandchildren; her sister, Helena Clarke, Utica; brother-in-law Carl Lahah, Boonville; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Beck, California; Beverly Beck, Utica; Patricia Beck, Whitesboro; Janet Beck, Croghan; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband Lowell R. Virkler, her son Loren Lowell Virkler, her five brothers, Howard Beck, who died in infancy, Leslie Beck, Jr., Robert Beck, James Beck, Louis Beck; her three sisters who died in infancy, Sarah (Celia’s twin), Mildred, and Helena May Beck; her sister, Sandra Beck, who died at age eight; her sisters, Lois (Fred) Cardinal, Joyce Rowsam, Darlene Lahah, and brother-in-law, Herb Clarke.

Calling hours will be held at Sundquist Funeral Home on Thursday, March 21, 2019 from 4:00 -7:00 P.M. Funeral service will be Friday, March 22, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Croghan, with ministers of the church officiating. Spring burial will be in Apostolic Christian Cemetery.

The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the wonderful nursing staff at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility for their compassionate care as well as to the many friends who took the time to visit with Celia during her time there.

CAPE VINCENT- M. Lillian Mason, 99 , of Cape Vincent Passed away peacefully at Samaritan Summit Village in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday March 16th, 2019. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home Inc. Cape Vincent, NY.

She was the daughter of the late Robert and Catherine Yott. Born on Wolfe Island on January 27th, 1920; she moved to Cape Vincent in 1923.

She attended local schools and worked at various restaurants in and around Cape Vincent. She married Alton W. Mason on May 17th, 1941. They lived in the village until moving to their farm on Stony Point Road-where they worked and lived for twenty-seven years. after selling their farm they moved back to the village in 1977.

She was a member of St. Vincent of Paul Catholic Church and also a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over sixty years.

Lillian was predeceased by her husband Alton, her parents, five sisters: Agnes Hulton, Wolfe Island Canada, Eileen Docteur, Chaumont, Gladys Docteur, Cape Vincent, Katherine White, Cape Vincent, Francis Champagne, Bellvill Canada, Edith Knapp, Cape Vincent. Four brothers: Howard Yott, Chaumont, Victor Yott, Three Mile Bay, Bernard Yott, Michigan, Robert Yott, Cape Vincent.

Calling hours will be Friday March 22nd, 2019 from 4pm-7pm at Cleveland Funeral Home Inc. Cape Vincent, NY. A funeral service will be held Saturday March 23rd, 2019 at 11am at St. Vincent of Paul Church in Cape Vincent, NY.

John S. (Jack) Thornton

John S. (Jack) Thornton, 85, of 31 Bridge St., West Carthage died Monday evening, March 18, 2019 at Hospice of Jefferson County in Watertown.

Jack was born on April 15, 1933 in Geneva, NY, son of the late Carroll and Elizabeth (Schoonover) Thornton. He was a 1952 graduate of Geneva High School. He attended Alfred University for a year before enlisting in the Army. He served in the 66th Topographic Company in Stuttgart, Germany as a military policeman. He completed his education at the University of Buffalo where he graduated as a pharmacist. Jack apprenticed at the Fox Drug Co. in Carthage and later worked in Mexico and Parish. He married the former Lynn K. Metzger on August 25, 1962 at St. James Church with Rev. McCarthy officiating. In 1964 he was offered partnership in Fox Drug Co. and worked there for many years. In addition to Fox Drug, he worked at Carthage Area Hospital, Alexandria Bay Hospital and Rite-Aid Company in various positions.

Jack is a 53 year member of the BPOE Lodge # 1762, American Legion Post # 789, former member of Carlowden Country Club, the Ski Patrol at Snow Ridge and the Burnt Camp Club. Jack loved to hunt, fish and ski and was an avid Syracuse and Buffalo Bills fan. He also was a certified scuba diver and a private pilot.

He is survived by his wife: Lynn M. Thornton of West Carthage, one daughter and son-in-law: Cathy and Mark Lewandowski of Soft Maple and one son and his wife: Christopher and Brenda Thornton of Spencerport; his grandchildren; Carolyn, Alexander and Matthew, a twin brother, Richard P. Thornton of Lincoln,CA, nieces and nephews and his favorite dog, Swayze. He is preceded in death by his brother, Carroll Thornton.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 23 at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home with Wayne Arnold and Paul Clarke officiating. Calling hours will precede the service from 1-3pm at the funeral home.

Larry R Russell

CROGHAN – Larry R. Russell, 74, of Pinetree Rd., passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 17, 2019 while cutting wood at his home.

Larry was born on January 1, 1945 in Fine, New York, a son of Eugene and Alice (McBroom) Russell. He graduated from Carthage Central School and went on to enlist in the United States Army National Guard. He was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant after 25 years of long and faithful service.

More recently, he worked for Lewis County in the maintenance department.

Larry was an avid outdoorsman and greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also a New York Giants fan who loved cars and attending car shows.

Larry is survived by two sons, Phillip Russell of Syracuse and Derrick (Johanna) Russell of Syracuse; his mother, Alice Russell of Carthage; two brothers, Gentry (Eulina) Russell of Carthage and Gary Russell of the Town of Fine; and two grandchildren, Caiden Russell and Mersadiz Hayes. He is predeceased by his father, Eugene Russell as well as two siblings, Gail and Roy Russell.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 22, 2019 from 11-1 PM at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. A funeral service with military honors will immediately follow the calling hours at 1 PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Arnold officiating. Burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Carthage.

Sister Arline SCHMEER

Cape Vincent - Sister Arline SCHMEER, Ph.D. Sister Arline passed away peacefully at Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown, NY, Sunday March 17th, 2019.

For 57 years, Arline was a Dominican Sister with Our Lady of the Springs, Bridgeport, CT. Born in Rochester, NY to Edward “Yock” and Madeline Haines Schmeer, Sister was a 1947 graduate of Nazareth Academy. As a devout member of the Dominican Order of Preachers, Sister Arline was a highly respected educator with teaching appointments at junior high, high school, and college planes including the University of Wurtzburg, Bavaria, Germany.

Sister Arline was also an internationally recognized scientist, lecturer, and consultant in cancer research. Sister is most recognized for her discovery of an anti-cancer agent she termed Mercene. This drug has been proven effective as an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-tumor agent. Her discovery was independently confirmed by Nobel Prize Laureate, Dr. Albert Szent Gyorgyi, among others.

Dr. Schmeer earned a Ph.D. in Bio-Medicine from the University of Colorado in addition to her B.A. from Ohio Dominican University and an MSc in Biology from Notre Dame Un. Additionally, Dr. Schmeer received honorary doctoral degrees from the NY State Board of Regents plus Albertus Magnus College, New Haven, CT. Other exemplary awards included Governor’s Award from The Ohio Academy of Science, Sertoma Community Service Award, President’s Gold Medal from the University of Detroit, and Outstanding Alumna Award from Ohio Dominican, all given to Dr. Schmeer in recognition of superior contributions to science, education, and community.

Sister Arline is predeceased by her brother, Edward “Bud” Schmeer and his wife, Marlene Wilcox Schmeer, of Cape Vincent. Sister is survived by her cousin, Paul Leschorn, and her four nephews: Kurt, Kyle, Mark, David and families.

Jean L. Woolschlager

Boonville- Jean L. Woolschlager, 91, a longtime resident of Post St. and wife of T. Paul, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2019 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, New Hartford, while surrounded by her loving family.

Jean was born near Boonville, on December 28, 1927, on the Jackson Homestead Farm on Jackson Hill Road, a daughter of Louis D. and Bernice Jenks Jackson. Jean graduated from Boonville Central High School, with the Class of 1946 and graduated from St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing of Utica, earning her registered Nurse Degree with the Class of 1949. Thereafter Mrs. Woolschlager was employed as a Registered Nurse in private duty, for Dr. Robert Smith of Boonville, at Boonville Central School, and finally for many years in several departments of Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, retiring in 1985.

On November 19, 1949, Jean was united in marriage with Paul Woolschlager at Trinity Episcopal Church, Boonville. This was a blessed union of 69 years.

Jean was a member of First Baptist Church, Boonville, a Past Matron of Salma Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Boonville, and a member of Boonville Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary. For many years she served the fire company and her community as a Level Three EMT on the Boonville Fire Department Ambulance, logging a total of 800 trips. She greatly enjoyed her family, cooking, reading, raising flowers traveling, camping and various church activities.

For many years Jean and Paul spent summers in Boonville, and winters in Ellington, Fla. Together they enjoyed traveling through 49 of the 50 United States, and also two trips of touring throughout Europe. Jean and Paul also enjoyed hiking in the Adirondack Mountains, boating, snowmobiling and skiing.

Jean is survived by her husband, Paul, one son, Gary (Donna) Woolschlager, Cicero; two daughters, Patricia Weiler, Beverly (Mike) Naperkowski, all of Boonville; grandchildren, Adrian (Amy) Weiler, Angela (Mike) Cihocki, Boonville and Jessica (Richard) Sommers, Rome; great grandchildren, Robert and Mia Weiler and Luke Cihocki, all of Boonville and John Sommers, Rome. Also surviving is a brother in law, Hawley (Laurie) Woolschlager, Wenatchee, Washington State and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Burial will be in the spring in Boonville Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. at the funeral home, where members of the Lake Delta, Mappa and Salma Chapter 193, of the Order of the Eastern Star will meet in a group for services at 3:30 P.M. Anita J. (Stewart) McManus, 86, of Ashville, OH, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at her residence.

Anita was born on April 28, 1932 in Carthage, NY, the daughter of the late Abner and Anita Dionne Stewart. She was a graduate of the West Carthage High School and enjoyed volunteering at the former VFW Post #2505 in Shadeville, OH.

She is survived by her children, Lloyd (Kim) McManus of Groveport, OH, Robin (Dean) Davis of Ashville, OH, Cindy (Terry) Worrix of Ashville, OH and Michael (Shannon) McManus of VA, two brothers, Thomas (Peggy) Stewart of West Carthage and William (Eileen) Stewart of Bowie, MD, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd F. Neil R. Burns

NEW BOSTON - Neil R. Burns, 88, died on Monday, March 18, 2019 at home under the care of his family and Lewis County Hospice.

Mr. Burns was born on April 2, 1930 on the family homestead the son of the late Carl and Margaret (Maher) Burns. Neil attended rural school in New Boston and graduated from Lowville Free Academy. On March 20, 1951 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in Germany. Neil was honorably discharged on March 12, 1957. Upon returning home he went into farming with his father Carl. On February 8, 1958 he married Ruth Blanche Lucas. They made their home on the Burns homestead. She passed away on May 1, 1979.

Neil was a farmer his entire life in New Boston on the family homestead retiring in 1980’s due to health. His son Richard started the farm up again and he began helping on the farm once again.

He is survived by companion of 38 years, Betty L. Sykes; his children, Richard C. Burns; Kathy A. (Jan) McIntosh; Yvonne (Stanley) Spencer; Brenda (George) Merrill; a daughter-in-law, Trudy Segovis; his grandchildren, Ava and Brian Burns, Katie (Jeff) Torch, Colleen McIntosh and companion Troy Babcock, Stan Spencer and fiancé Nicky Manzer, Samantha Spencer, Andy, Chris, Debbie and Ed Merrill, Heather and Ryan St. Louis, Heidi and fiancé Brian Creighton; four great grandchildren; his sister, Elizabeth A. “Betty” Bush; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Neil is predeceased by his step son Leon Segovis, Jr.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at the Lowville V.F.W. from 2 to 4:00 P.M. There will be no funeral or calling hours. A private military burial will be in Barnes Corners Cemetery in the spring.

LOWVILLE - Bertha Hope Norton 91, died on Monday March 18, 2019 as a resident of Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility since January 2019.

She was born on June 18, 1927 in Colton the daughter of the late Leo J. and

Katherine Burdick Robinson. She married Edward Raymond Norton on January 9, 1947 at the United Methodist Church in Richville by Edward JM Burston, officiating. Her husband passed away on August 21, 1967.

Surviving Bertha is a son Chris Raymond Norton, Lowville; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and William Hellinger, Lowville; and a daughter Cheryl Rowsam, Newport; a sister, Gertrude Cox, Arizona. A very special niece Eva Widrick, Lowville, who considered her as a mother and Bertha loved her dearly.

Also, two special ladies, Nancy Szijarto and Sherrie Vora who treated her with love and compassion.

Bertha has eight grandchildren, Shawn and Ellen Hayes of Jay; Shane and Aimee Hayes, and Shaughnessy Hayes of Glenfield; Brandon and his fiancé Meghann Malik

and John Hellinger all of Lowville; Jennifer Rowsam of Arkansas; Ashley Rowsam of Carthage; Faith Rowsam of Newport; six great grandchildren, Emma, Hunter, Wyatt, Chaselyn, Kyle, and Dakota. Also many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by brothers Ernest, Edson, and John Robinson and Glenn Gibson, sisters, Lila Mathous, Evelyn Quinn.

Calling hours for family and friends will be on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M., with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired minister officiating.

LOWVILLE- Donald Joseph Keib, 73, of Number Three Road, Lowville, passed away Monday evening, March 18, 2019 at University Hospital, Syracuse.

A funeral service with Military Honors will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 22, 2019 at the Lowville Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Runner officiating. Spring burial will be in the Lowville Rural Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Terryl; two sons, Robert Keib of Salem, MA, Stephen Keib of Doylestown, PA; six step-children and their spouses, Susan and Mike King of Woburn, MA, Melissa and Dana Vient of West Springfield, MA, Steven and Jill DeCarolis of Wilbraham, MA, Melissa and Jim Bocek of Bloomfield, CT, Daniel R. and Heather Munson of Enfield, CT, Erika and Brian Nagle of East Granby, CT; a brother and sister-in-law, Neil and Judy Keib of Hamilton; a granddaughter, Sharon Keib, and seven step-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his wife, Joyce DeCarolis, who died on September 11, 1993; a sister, Carole Goodier, and his twin brother, Douglas Keib.

Don was born on June 5, 1945 in Lowville, NY, a son of the late Frederick and Joan McDonald Keib and graduated from Lowville Academy in 1963 and Morrisville College in 1965, with an AAS degree in Dairy Science. As a young man, Don worked on the Leo and Mary Demko Farm on the Number Three Road in Lowville from 1957-1965 and on and off for many years after. Don remained lifelong friends with Leo and Mary and their family. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, as a crew chief on a helicopter with the 176th Aviation Company. He worked as a salesman for Ecolab throughout the Northeast for 38 years. On January 14, 1995, he married Terryl Tabor in Harpswell, Maine.

He was a member of the Lowville Baptist Church and Open Bible Baptist Church, Bath, Maine. He was also a Life Member of the Brunswick, Maine VFW Post and a member of the Antique Tractor Club of Maine and an antique tractor enthusiast. He was a collector of Vintage Milk Bottles and Dairy Farm Memorabilia. He enjoyed riding on his tractors, gardening, and tending to his chickens.

Lynn D. Babcock, 66, of 31701 Boni Road, Copenhagen, passed away March 20, 2019 at his home where he as under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County and surrounded by his loving family.

Calling hours will be held Friday, March 22, Noon to 2 p.m. at the Bruce Funeral Home 131 Maple St., Black River.

The Funeral Service will follow the calling hours Friday, 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Black River Cemetery.

Born on January 16, 1953 in Watertown, NY, son of Maurice and Shirley Morrow Babcock, he graduated from Carthage Central High School in 1973.

He started out his career as a machinist at NY Air Brake for 23 years, he then became a security guard at the DeFeriet Paper Mill and Lewis County Dairy, he helped setup Hackets Dept. Store in Watertown where he continued to work until going to work at Wal-Mart as a stocker, retiring in 2017.

He married Victoria Nicholas on April 5, 1975 at the First Baptist Church Black River. The couple resided in Back River until they built their home in Copenhagen in 1991.

Lynn was an avid outdoors man, he loved hunting, fishing, camping, was a NASCAR fan and in his early days raced cars at Can Am, he was a member of the North American Hunting Club and former member of the Machinist Union.

Among his survivors are his beloved wife, Victoria L. Babcock, his daughter and son-in-law, Tanya M. and Stephen G. Gage, Tylerville, a son, Timothy A. Babcock, Copenhagen, five grandchildren, Amanda, Brian, Joseph, Conner and Olivia, two brothers and a sister-in-law, Robert and Deanna Babcock, Black River, Douglas Babcock, Black River, two sisters and their husbands, Donna and Larry Bowman, Black River, Susan and Mace Bammann, TX, and several nieces and nephews.

WATERTOWN-Katherine M. Buchal, 87, passed away on Friday March 15th, 2019. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown.

Katherine was born on April 11th, 1931 in Theresa, NY to the late Leo McKeever and Erma Swartout McKeever.

In 1952 Katherine married Edward Buchal. Edward passed in 1985.

Katherine attended and graduated from Cape Vincent Central School in 1948 before attending Watertown school of commerce where she graduated in 1949. Katherine worked at Agricultural Insurance Company in Watertown from 1949-1953, before working in the Watertown School District as a secretary for 20 years, retiring in 1990.

Katherine volunteered for the Office of the Aging, and the Sisters of St. Joseph. She also attended St. Patrick’s church in Watertown. Her hobbies included sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, and traveling.

Katherine is survived by two sons, Thomas (Mary) Buchal, Moravia, NY, and Timothy (Dawn) Buchal, Poughkeepsie, NY, a daughter Leisa (Raphael “Buzz”) Mangino, St. Johns, FL. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Timothy Buchal, Shannon Buchal, Rebecca (Caleb) Wagner, and Anthony Mangino, and two great-grandchildren: Avery Katherine and Maddyx Adeline.

She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, a brother James, and two sisters, Anne Devlen, and Karen Lawton.

A memorial service and burial will take place at a later date.

Mr. Julian H. LaCourse

MASSENA - Mr. Julian H. LaCourse, 88, of East Hatfield Street passed away peacefully on March 20, 2019 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. As per the family’s request, there will be no public calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the summer.

Julian was born April 9, 1930 in Massena, the son of the late Horace H. and Juliette (Mathieu) LaCourse. Julian graduated from Massena High School in 1948. He married Phyllis Brockway on November 27, 1952 (Thanksgiving Day) at St. Mary Church in Fort Covington with Reverend Edmund Dumas officiating.

After graduating from high school, Julian started his career at Alcoa in 1948. He proudly served his country during the Korean War from 1951 – 53. After the war, he returned to work at Alcoa. He attended evening classes at Canton ATC earning an Associates Degree. He continued to work at Alcoa for 44 years until his retirement in 1992. Julian retired as the Director of Computer Operations for Alcoa Massena Operations.

Julian is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Phyllis; two daughters, Kathleen (Tim) Ahlfeld and Lisa Barry, both of Massena; one son, Michael (Natalie) LaCourse of Cocoa Beach, Florida. He is also survived by six (6) grandchildren: Jessica MacKellar, Nicholas (Karen) Ahlfeld and Samantha Ahlfeld; Gavin and MacKenzie Lacourse; and Alexandar Barry. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Julian was predeceased by his son Mark and five (5) brothers Marcel, Lionel (Pete), Claude, Guy and Ronald LaCourse.

Julian was known for his calm demeanor and quick wit. He could talk about any subject and always made you feel better about yourself after a conversation. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed spending the summer months on the river at his camp on Pointe LeBlanc in Quebec. He especially enjoyed the evenings relaxing around the fire reading. However, nothing could top his love for his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them participate in all of their activities.

Julian was very active in the community. He served on the Massena Central School Board of Education including 5 years as President. He also served on the St Joseph’s Parish Council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.

At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley and Trinity Catholic School.

Funeral services for Edson “Ed” W. Clothier, 77, of Clare, NY, will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at 11:00 AM at Lawrence Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Canton with Rev. John Frary officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Degrasse.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, March 22, from 5-7 PM. Additional off street parking is available behind “LUNA” at 18 Park Street. Ed died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, March 19, 2019.

Memorial contributions are suggested to either Pleasant View Cemetery or to Degrasse Volunteer Fire Department.

Ed was born October 14, 1941, in Crary Mills, NY. He was the son of the late, Marshall & Judith “TINA” E. (McEwen) Clothier. He graduated Canton High School in 1959 and on April 11, 1969, he married Joyce LaBar in the Canton United Methodist Church. The couple were married nearly 50 years.

Ed was member of Laborer’s Local 322, Massena for many years. He worked on numerous projects in the area, including the Seaway, St. Lawrence and Clarkson Universities, to name a few.

In addition to his beloved wife, Joyce, he is survived by his loving daughters, Barbara (Donnie Francis) Hundley of Brasher Falls, Mary Butterfield of Potsdam, Terrie (Matt Johnson) Clothier of Degrasse and Sara (Matt) Charpentier of Pierrepont; two sisters, Sylvia Smith and Ruth Pharoah; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jessica, Zeb, Madison, Marah, Caleb, Christopher and Olivia; and several great-grandchildren.

He will also be fondly remembered by many friends including Denny Warren and his family.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Hundley, who died, October 15, 2017.

Ed had several interests and hobbies including: hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, making maple syrup, picking berries and spending precious time at the family cabin. He had a great love of wood-working and restoring old cars and trucks. He also enjoyed his little hobby farm and socializing with dear friends and family.

Ed was a hard worker, a devoted family man and a wonderful provider for his wife and five daughters.

Ida Rose May (Crosby) Evereth was born February 11, 1920, in Adams Center, New York, to parents James Clifford and Clarabell (Williams) Crosby. She married John Evereth, son of Mary and Michael Evereth, on February 15, 1938, at the Congregational Church in Watertown, New York. John Evereth died August 11, 1994. Survivors include her daughter, Constance Rose (Evereth) Lieto, of Bend, OR; son John George (wife Diane) Evereth, of Ocala, FL; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter. She is predeceased by her older brothers, James and Arthur, as well as her beloved husband of 56 years, John. A private burial will be held at Arsenal Street Cemetery in Watertown, New York.
