Princeton – Belva Joan Matthews, 79, passed away at Heartland Health Care Center, Henry, IL on Thursday, March 14, 2019.

Belva was born on May 27, 1939 to the late Basil and Elsie (Curtis) Fountain in Canton, NY. She was a graduate of Knox Memorial High School in Russell, NY Cass of 1956. She married the late Howard C. Matthews on August 27, 1964 at the Methodist Church in Herman, NY. She was a supervisor at the St. Lawrence County Meals on Wheels. Belva also worked at the Princeton Mushroom Factory in the Café as well as managing several restaurants for the owner of the café. She worked at the Care Inn Nursing Home, where she became a certified dietitian. She also worked at Perry Memorial Hospital and ran the kitchen as the dietitian before retiring. She spent her retirement as a Gold Coat at Perry Memorial and volunteered at the Clark House assisting in the kitchen.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Norberg Memorial Home, Princeton, IL. LOWVILLE – Barbara Andrea Simek, 24 died on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 in the town of Watson on N. Chases Lake Road.

Barbara was born in Bronxville on November 11, 1994 the daughter of Gerald Martin “Jerry” and Christine A. Mundy Simek. She was fondly named after her grandmothers, Barbara Mundy and Andrea Simek. She graduated from Beaver River Central School in 2013 and the Glenfield B.O.C.E.S. Nursing program. While in school she loved playing volleyball and spending time with her friends. Barb was a certified nursing assistant and had work at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility.

She is survived by her son, Jarrett Francis Cranker, her parents, Jerry and Chris, Jarrett’s father, Nate Cranker, her God parents, Frank Mundy and Marion Mundy, her Long Island family, aunts, uncles and cousins, and friends.

Barbara is predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Gerald and Andrea Simek and maternal grandparents, Francis and Barbara Mundy.

Randell E. Boice, 61, a resident of Greenwich passed away after a brief illness on March 20, 2019 at Saratoga Hospital surrounded by his loving wife, son and sister.

He was born July 3, 1957 in Olympia, WA to Mary Kathryn and Robert A. Boice.

Randell never failed to see the humor in any given situation and always made others around him smile and laugh. He served his country proudly in the United States Army as a medic and used his skills later in life as a registered nurse for over 30 years. He was a loving father, husband, brother and son. Randell enjoyed antiques or any odd knick knacks he could find and driving around Washington County with his wife enjoying the scenery. He enjoyed the Adirondacks and was a member of the Little Killdare Adirondack Club.

In addition to his parents’ survivors include his loving wife Catherine Gross Boice of Greenwich; son Christian Boice of Watertown, NY; sister Kathryn Boice Sullivan and her fiancé William B. McCurdy Jr. of Kalamazoo, MI; nephew Jacob L. Sullivan and niece Meghan M. Sullivan.

Lynn L. Johnson, 73, of 224 S. Meadow St., Watertown, passed away March 20, 2019 at the Samaritan Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on December 31, 1945 in Batavia, NY, son of Lynn and Eleanor Warren Johnson. Lynn graduated from Batavia High School in 1965. Following school he entered the US Army on September 3, 1965. He served in Vietnam and received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged on August 30, 1968.

Upon his honorable discharge he returned home and became a NYS corrections officer. He worked at the Watertown Correctional Facility, Attica Correctional Facility and retired from Cape Vincent Correctional Facility in 2000. While an officer at Attica Correctional Facility he was a hostage during Attica riot.

He married Mildred I. Eiholzer of Morrisville, NY, on April 16, 1987 in South Carolina. The couple resided in Watertown.

Mr. Johnson was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Among his survivors are his loving wife, Mildred I. Johnson, Watertown, two daughters, Jaimie Kramer and her fiance Bill Knapp, Hamilton, NY, Tricia and Jeff Zehr, Lorraine, 12 grandchildren, a sister, Sheila Mulwane, Bainbridge, NY, and several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, May 4 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home 117 N. Massey St., Watertown. The Funeral Service will immediately follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with honors from Cape Vincent Correctional Facility Honor Guard.

Military honors will be held at a later date at the Western New York National Cemetery in Pembroke, NY, where he will be entombed.

David E. Compeau, age 76 of Glen Park passed away at his home Wednesday evening with his family by his side.

David was born June 27, 1942 in Watertown the son of Earl and Irene Burrows Compeau. He graduated from General Brown Central High School. He served in the US Navy from 1960 to 1964 and then served in the Naval Reserve until 1966.

He married Barbara J. Getman on August 21, 1965 at the Brownville United Methodist Church. David worked as a truck-driver and safety officer at Seaway Motor Express, SMX Trucking and was co-owner of 3 Knights Enterprises. After retirement he worked in sales at Gander Mountain.

Dave was very active in the Dexter United Methodist Church, was a Lay-Leader, helped start the Town ofBrownville Food Pantry, also was a life-time member and past Fire Chief and officer of the Glen Park Fire Dept. and was instrumental in designing and building the current Glen Park Fire Station. He was also a member of Dexter American Legion and former member of the Masons.

He is survived by his wife Barbara and two daughters: Renee Kolb of Glen Park and Robin and Matt Brouty of Brownville. Grandchildren include Derrick and Chelsea Kolb, Corrine Brouty, Kendall Kolb, Amanda Brouty and her fiancé Matt Julian. A brother Gary Compeau of Vermont also survives.

He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters Susan Douglas and Linda Tapke.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, March 30th at Dexter United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM with Rev. Sally Buyea officiating. He will be cremated. John is survived by his wife, Ann; daughter, Deborah Mitchell of Ogdensburg, NY; twin sons, David and Donald Mitchell, who continue to operate the family farm and a beloved niece, Dorothy Wilson of Rock Island, TN. He was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Viola Pemberton and Margaret Noble.

John was born on February 6, 1927, on the Mitchell Road in Macomb, NY, to Clair and Clara Castle Mitchell. When he was five the family moved to Dannamora where his father was a cook at the prison. In 1939, they moved to a dairy farm in Waddington, NY. On June 16, 1949, he married Ann Allison and they continued to farm until 1956 when the St. Lawrence Seaway took the farm. It was located on the narrowest point in the St. Lawrence, known as Point Three Points. They purchased a farm in Hammond in 1955.

John was a member of the Hammond Volunteer Fire Department for many years and a cook at the Hammond 4-H and FFA Fair, known for his hamburgers. He was a Harley-Davidson enthusiast, owning four in his lifetime and loved fast boats, snowmobiles, ice fishing and parties at the “Sugar House,” a camp on the farm.

MASSENA - Amedeo “Hag” Cappione of 148 River Drive, Massena died Sunday, March 17, 2019 at his winter home in Winter Haven, Florida after a short illness.

Hag was born in Massena on March 8, 1930 to Philomena and Amedeo Cappione. He was the 6th of 9 children and is survived by his sister, Loretta “Wella” Opalka, his brothers, Sam (Lena), Francis “Bucky” and Joseph (Sally) Cappione.

He graduated from Massena High School in 1948, attended Manlius Military Academy and St. Bonaventure College where he played football. He enlisted in the Army and fought in the Korean Conflict.

Hag owned and operated many businesses in the Massena area and was a long-time member of the Italian-American Club and Massena Country Club. Hag loved golf and was proud to have hit a hole-in-one 7 times.

In addition to his brothers and sister, Hag is survived by his wife Susan; his son, Amedeo (Jennifer) and his granddaughter, Tessa. He was loved also by his step daughters Allie Magnanti and Amanda (Matt) Cummings; six step grandchildren and three great granddaughters; and many neices and nephews.

Hag will be remembered for the twinkle in his eye, his devilish grin, his eternal optimism and his love of family.

On June 11, 1960 she married Nicholas A. Montalbano. Laverne worked as a billing supervisor for Revere Copper Products in Rome, N.Y. for 43 years. She was a former member of the Methodist Church of Donna, TX, and a Life Member and past President of the Mohican Model A Ford Club of Central N.Y., and the Ononabago Winnies RV Club of Central N.Y. Laverne also loved dinning out, reading, and traveling by R.V. to historic places in America. She enjoyed spending her winters in South Texas.

Beverly was born on September 18, 1936, the daughter of Donald Brown and Dorothy Hayden Brown.

Beverly graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1954 and attended Alfred State College before becoming a lab Technician at E. J. Noble Hospital Gouverneur in 1954. She retired in August of 1996 after 40 years as laboratory supervisor.

Beverly married Arthur Tibbits in June 1956. The marriage ended in 1983. She married Richard Conklin on June 13, 1992. Richard passed away on March 20, 2013.

She enjoyed playing bridge, volunteering and fundraising for cancer and other organizations, golfing, gardening and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her three children, Tamara and William Kukula of Cicero, Teryl and David Norris of Tennessee and Toran Tibbits and his companion Tonya Patton of Fowler, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 4 sisters, Bethany Kirby, Kathy and Phillip Bigarel, Vickey and Terry Newvine, Karen and Thomas Green, and many nieces and nephews.

PARISHVILLE- Graveside services for Willard (Billy) James Robinson , 85, of Parishville, NY, who passed away on March 19, 2019 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, will be held in the springtime in the Fairview Cemetery, Parishville. Billy was born in Syracuse, NY to Willard B. and Mary Violet (Carbary) Robinson on January 24, 1934. He attended the Potsdam Campus School and then Potsdam High School graduating in 1953. He married Shirley Pryce on November 25, 1957. He worked as a private painting contractor for many years and was the co-owner and operator of JEBS Market in Parishville, NY until 1998. Billy was an avid outdoorsman and naturalist. His favorite time was spent at the log cabin in Hopkinton that he built by hand with his family.

Billy is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Shirley (Pryce) Robinson of Parishville, two sons James (Ellen) Robinson of Germantown, MD and Lawrence (Chikako) Robinson of Potsdam, a daughter Jennifer (Charles) Henry, Canton, one half-sister Virginia Ward, Potsdam, 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sally J. Gray, 75, of Clayton passed away at her home surrounded by her family Thursday, March 21, 2019.

Sally was born in Watertown on May 11, 1943, daughter of Earl A. “Runt” and Melba Rees Churchill. She graduated from Clayton High School and attended SUNY Fredonia and School of Cosmetology, Watertown. On August 4, 1962 she married Francis R. Gray at Clayton First Baptist Church with Rev. Laurence Wheaton officiating.

She had a beauty shop in her home for fifteen years and then joined the family’s business, Gray’s Wholesale, Inc., starting in 1984. She retired as secretary and treasurer in 2015. Sally was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clayton for most of her life and enjoyed singing in the choir. Most recently, she has been an active member of the Alexandria Bay Baptist Church. She participated in the Clayton bowling league for many years and golfed in the Ladies Golf League for over fifty years. She very much enjoyed caring for her family, church, and friends. Her gift was hospitality and serving the Lord.

Along with her husband, Francis, Sally is survived by her three children, Ross “Ty” Gray and wife, Linda, Plainfield, IL, Reisha Rieder and husband, Michael, Saratoga Springs, and Michael Gray and Amy Cantwell, Clayton; six grandchildren, Taylor, Aaron, and Connor Gray, Scotlynne and Grayson Rieder, and Rees Gray; sister, Beth Marshall and husband, Gerald “Sonny”, Clayton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, her step father, Frederick F. Dartnell, nephew, Scott Marshall, and a sister who died in infancy, Sue Merrilee Churchill.

CHESHIRE – John Elwood Cook, 72, of Cheshire and Wellesley Island, NY, passed away Wednesday March 20, 2019 at Smilow Cancer Center in New Haven. He was the husband of Judith (White) Cook.

John was born September 12, 1946, in Herkimer, NY, the son of the late John J. and Camilla (Krisher) Cook. He was an art teacher in Wallingford for his entire career, most recently at Sheehan High School until his retirement in 2002. His students were very important to him and he entertained them with his humor as well as teaching art.

John was a prolific songwriter, musician and artist with a special connection to the St. Lawrence River. As a fourth generation resident of the 1,000 Islands, he captured the essence of the river through his artwork and music. His successful career was recognized on both the local and national level. His work appeared in many juried shows at the Thousand Islands Art Center and the Frederic Remington Art Museum where he was awarded “Best in Show” several times. Other notable achievements include participating in exhibits at the Chautauqua Institution three times and the Adirondack Watercolor National Exhibition at The View in Old Forge, NY. He was a lifetime member of the Silvermine Guild and had a one-man show there early in his career.

Besides his wife of 51 years, John is survived by his son Jesse of Greenfield Center, NY; his daughter Allison Latcheran and her husband Jeffrey of Pittsburgh, PA; his grandchildren Connor, Courtney and William; as well as his dog Asta.
