Clara B. Curtis Bartelotte

pLyons Falls- Clara B. Curtis Bartelotte, age 101, a longtime resident of Lyonsdale Road, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016, at Lewis County Extended Care Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since February, 2015. /ppShe was born in Ava, on November 28, 1914, a daughter of Alfred and Hattie B. Warren Youngs. As a child she moved to Lewis County, where she attended several rural schools. On May 17, 1930, Clara was united in marriage with Emory R. Curtis, in La Fargeville. In 1943, the couple purchased the former Bailey Farm at Locust Grove, operating this farm until 1964, when they sold the farm to a daughter and son in law, Joyce and Alton Coe. At that time Clara and Emory, relocated to the Masonic Home Campus in Utica, where they resided and were both employed in patient care and as custodians. Mr. Curtis passed away on April 25, 1967 and Clara continued her employment at the Masonic Home afterwards for a time./ppOn December 6, 1969, Clara was united in marriage with Henry “Hank” Bartelotte, at the Boonville United Methodist Church. They lived in Taberg, before moving to Lyons Falls, where they constructed a home on Lyonsdale Road. Mr. Bartelotte, a retiree from 43 years of employment at Georgia Pacific Paper Co. Lyons Falls, passed away on June 18, 1988. Later Mrs. Bartelotte sold her home to her daughter and son in law, Nancy and Donald Gydesen, where Clara continued to reside, until moving to Lowville, in 2015. /ppMrs. Bartelotte was a member of Talcottville United Methodist Church, in later years she attended Forest Presbyterian Church, Lyons Falls, with Nancy and Donald Gydesen. Clara greatly enjoyed cooking and baking; she will be fondly remembered for the delicious Hawaiian wedding cake which she often had baked. She also greatly enjoyed square and polka dancing. She found joy in attending senior citizen groups and traveling on senior citizen bus trips. /ppClara is survived by two daughters, Beverly J. Beasock, West Leyden, Nancy (Donald) Gydesen, Lyons Falls; one son, Willis E. (Rose Marie) Curtis, Blossvale. Clara was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Coe, on September 19, 2006 and by her son-in-law, Wayne C. Beasock, in 2010. Also surviving are several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Emory Coe, in 2006, and by a great great grandson, Kody W. Beasock, in 2008. Clara was the last of her family of 11 brothers and sisters. /ppHer Funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, with interment to follow in Boonville Cemetery. Calling hours are Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until 1 p.m. until the funeral home. A reception for family and friends will be held at Forest Presbyterian Church, Lyons Falls, following the interment. pNAVARRE, FL-- Shirley Varner, 90, a resident of Navarre, FL passed away on February 5, 2016. Shirley was born in South Colton to the late Warren and Ethel Sayers Young. She was educated at the Old Union School in Colton, NY, graduating in 1943. She married Richard Varner in 1943 and lived in Potsdam until the 1980’s and moved to Navarre, FL. Shirley was pre-deceased by her husband; her parents; her oldest son, Richard; her five sisters, Myrtle, Dora, Bernice, Bessie, Grace; her five brothers, George, Frank, Richard and Carl./ppShirley is survived by two sons, Bill and Steve, both of Navarre, FL, her four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild as well as several nieces and nephews. pMichael C. Sorensen, 69, Shangraw Road, Rodman, died Thursday morning, April 28, 2016, at the Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, with Rev. Leon “Toby” Schilling officiating, with a celebration of life at the American Legion in Sackets Harbor to follow. Calling hours will be Sunday 2:00-6:00 pm. Burial will be private at a later date./ppBorn March 22, 1947 in Adams Center, son of Durwood and Rena (Frasher) Sorensen, he graduated in 1966 from the Adams-Adams Center High School. He entered the United States Air Force and was later honorably discharged due to medical injuries. /ppMike worked as a police officer in Adams, Theresa, Alexandria Bay and Sackets Harbor where he retired as Police Chief in 1995. He also worked for the US Postal Service for 31 years, retiring as maintenance supervisor in 2007. He began driving school bus for South Jefferson Central School in 2008 until the time of his illness. He was very dedicated and enjoyed every minute with the students./ppFor the past few years, he also served as Zoning Officer for the Town of Rodman. He is survived by his wife Rosanne; three sons, Justin (Jennifer) Sorensen, Rodman, Brian (Jennifer) Lynch, Antwerp, Brent Lynch, Adams; three daughters, Kimberley Sorensen, Watertown, Erin (Claude) Mayne, Rodman, Shannon (James) Bergmeyer, N. Fort Meyers, FL; twenty three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two brothers, David (Margo) Sorensen, Wilmington, NC, Ronald (Rosemary) Sorensen, Amsterdam, NY; one sister, Melinda (Jimmy) Stark, East Syracuse; and several nieces and nephews./ppMike enjoyed deer hunting with his family, camping and hiking the High Peaks in the Adirondacks, horseback riding and riding his Harley Motorcycle. He found that new passion for riding later in life and joined the Road Dawgs Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, where he was known as “Shadow”. He thoroughly enjoyed hitting the road with his brothers, and taking long rides and vacations with the love of his life, Rosanne./ppHe was a member of the Sackets Harbor American Legion, and the Syracuse Chapter Road Dawgs Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, where he also served as secretary. /ppHe married Rosanne Shorkey Lynch of Evans Mills in 1980. pKrystal Mary Kosztowski, 74, former resident of Carthage and Watertown, passed away on April 1, at her home in Marietta GA, surrounded by her immediate family. Krystal was a Stage 4 lung cancer survivor, in remission since 2010, but lost the battle against the after effects of COPD. /ppThe burial of her remains and graveside prayer will be on July 23, 2016 at 11 am at St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Krystal’s wishes were to be cremated in GA and have her remains brought to Carthage for burial with her parents, John and Carmel Kosztowski in St. James Cemetary./ppBorn on January 16, 1942 in Carthage, NY, a daughter and only child to John and Carmel Pinnozzotto Kosztowski. Krystal graduated from Carthage Central High School in 1959 and went on to graduate from Watertown School of Commerce with a Business degree. /ppKrystal was married on December 19, 1964, to William Joseph Torella III of Elizabeth, NJ. After a brief residence in New Jersey, Bill and Krystal relocated back to Krystal’s hometown of Carthage in 1969 and together they raised their 3 daughters on their beloved family farm. Krystal and Bill divorced in 1987, but remained as close friends until the end of her life. /ppKrystal worked as a clerk in several business firms as well as clerking in the Comptrollers Office on Camp (Fort) Drum. After returning to Carthage, she took time to raise her daughters and during that time put her lifelong love of antiques to work when she and her father, John, opened up an antique business in the family barn. Krystal joined the workforce permanently in 1985 as a Department Manager in several retail stores in Watertown over the years, and ultimately retiring from Walmart in Marietta, GA after 25 years of dedicated service to the company. /ppKrystal enjoyed feeding squirrels, creative writing, bird watching, an occasional trip to the local casinos, antiquing, and she always loved being surrounded by her devoted family./ppShe is survived by her 3 loving daughters, Krystine Eve Torella, Marietta GA, Keredith Lee Torella Basham and her husband, Randy, Dallas GA and Nina Rae Torella Jackson and her husband, Brett, Marietta GA. pHARRISVILLE - Betty Ann Watson, 69, died early Friday morning, April 29, 2016 at her home. /ppMrs. Watson was born August 5, 1946 in Gouverneur, the daughter of the late Bennett and Hazel (Norton) McMullen. Betty graduated from Clifton Fine High School, Star Lake and Jefferson Community College. She was a medical transcriptionist at Samaritan Medical Center and retired in 2011./ppShe married Donald Watson on July 15, 2000 in Harrisville with Philip Hathway officiating. Together the couple made their home in Harrisville where she loved taking care of her grandchildren and great niece and nephews. His siblings Robin (Ben) Harvey-Cheney of Nebraska, Tina Colbert of Indiana, Gretchen (Harvey)Wood of Maryland, Todd Colbert of Indiana, Tiffany (Elijah) Colbert-Ring of North Carolina, and Jamie Kohl (Colbert) & Greg Dempster of Nebraska. pOldest Graduate of Lowville Academy passes away at 104./ppLucile Schwendy of Lowville, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by her sons and daughter on May 1, 2016. She had resided at the Residential Health Care Facility at Lewis County General Hospital. /ppMrs. Schwendy was born in 1911 to Julia and William Hirschy on their family farm on the Ridge Road in Castorland. As a child, she attended the local one-room schoolhouse. Later, she was driven in her father’s milk wagon to take the train to Lowville Academy. After graduation in 1929, she attended the Watertown School of Commerce. Mrs. Schwendy worked at the Carthage National Savings Bank and Climax in Castorland. In 1935 she married Royal Schwendy. Their early marriage was spent in Castorland and then in Naumburg, where Mrs. Schwendy was a wife, mother and homemaker. Her four children include Bruce (Donna), Rochester; Joan Takacs, deceased; Sandra Asmussen, Portland, ME; and John (Marianne Green), Lowville. /ppThe Schwendys moved to Beaver Falls in 1959, where Mr. Schwendy managed the Community Hall. They actively participated in the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church, and Mrs. Schwendy was active in the United Methodist Women. In 1999 the couple moved to Brookside Senior Living Community in Lowville. Royal, her husband of 71 years, passed away in 2006 at the age of 95. Mrs. Schwendy had 14 grandchildren 19 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Her love of music, nature, down-home cooking, knitting, sewing and The Bible have been passed to these generations. She has led by example with her patience, kindness, and gentleness of soul. Funeral arrangements are as follows. /ppCalling hours are from 4 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville. Dafoe, 84, of County Route 27, Lisbon passed away on Friday April, 29, 2016, at the Highland Nursing Home, Massena. /ppBorn December 22, 1931 to George and Hilda (Winters) Sanderson, in Lisbon, NY she attended Morley and Canton Schools. On June 16, 1950 she married Kenneth A. Dafoe at the United Methodist Church, Canton with Rev. Walter Dobies officiating. The couple lived in Lisbon for most of their married life. Kenneth passed in February of 2011. Shirley was a former clerk at the E. J. Noble, Canton and also worked for a time at Britt’s Department Store, Canton and Warner Brothers Corset Company, Massena. /ppShe is survived by her two sons, Lynn Dafoe of Frederick, CO and David and wife Sheri Dafoe of Oswego, NY; three granddaughters Melissa and Adam Deppe, and Carly Dafoe of Colorado and Lauren Dafoe, Oswego, NY; three grandsons Christopher and Stephen Decker, Cranberry Twp, PA and Benjamin Dafoe, Oswego, NY; three great-grandchildren, Sophia Deppe, Joey and Chloe Jane Dafoe, of Colorado; brothers; Howard and Rita Sanderson of Morley and Lloyd Sanderson of Rota, Spain and sisters Mable Harwood of Massena, NY, Myrna and Ray Doud of Colton, NY, and a sister-in-law Louise Sanderson along with several nieces and nephews. /ppShirley was predeceased by a daughter Carolyn Decker in 2005, a sister Helen Iovine in 2009, a brother Ronald Sanderson in 2011 and a sister-in-law Tere Sanderson in 2009. /ppShirley enjoyed creating many beautiful wreaths and angels which she shared with her family and friends. She had a passion for gardening and everyone enjoyed her beautiful flower gardens that she lovingly planted and cared for, sharing them with anyone who stopped by. She enjoyed most of all spending time with her family. /ppAs per her wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. Shirley was a member of the Buck’s Bridge Community Church, Canton to which donations may be made. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Phillips Memorial Home, Madrid.
