CHAUMONT- Bill Stout passed away peacefully on Monday May 27th, 2019, surrounded by those who cared for him. Bill was born on May 22nd, 1948. Bill was a kind and caring person who loved everyone. His favorite things were his camp, his cat, resident coffee hour with donuts, and his favorite place Sams club. He will be gratefully missed by his friends, family, Bayview board, residents, staff, and PBK. He will also be missed by Chaumont Bay residents, and his dear friends at Sams Club.

He is survived by his friends and family at Bayview Manor and those who cared for him at SMC.

There will be a memorial service at Bayview Community Room on Friday June 14th, 2019 at 1pm, officiated by Reverend Jim Hayes.

In lieu of flowers donations will be gratefully appreciated made to the Three Mile Bay ambulance squad.

WESTFIELD - John A. “Boomer” Layton, age 69, of Westfield, formerly of Watertown, NY, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019, at Absolut Care of Dunkirk following an extended illness.

John was born on July 18, 1949, in Chelsea, MA, the son of the late John W. and Anastasia (O’Callaghan) Layton.

John graduated from Immaculate Heart Central School in Watertown in 1968 and received his BA from St. Francis College of Maine. He was a Toll Taker for NYS Thruway Authority for over 35 years before retiring in 2010.

John was a member of St. Dominic RC Church of Westfield, a Life member of the Watertown Elks Club, a current member of the Westfield Moose Club and a social member of both the VFW and the American Legion posts in Westfield. He played professional football for the Watertown Red and Black football club and was a member of the 1971 Championship Team. He had also played rugby for many years and enjoyed golf. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed the outdoors. Above all else, “Boom” loved to spend time with his niece and nephew and all of his family and extended family. John was always doing things for other people and loved to bring a smile to everyone’s face. He loved to make people laugh.

Survivors include his sister, Barbara (Joe) Harwood of Watertown, NY, his niece, Brigid Harwood of Watertown, NY, and his nephew, Ryan (Sithia Phongsouvanh) Harwood, of Philadelphia, PA and Ryan’s children, Aden and Abel. He is further survived by his surrogate brother and sister, Rodney and Dorothy Coleman of Westbrook, CT.

Calling hours will be held at the Reed and Benoit Funeral Home Inc., 632 State St., Watertown, NY, on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday morning, June 21st at 11 AM at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 320 W. Lynde St., Watertown, NY with Fr. Jonas Tondayu officiating.

Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Watertown, NY

John Henry Tharp

WATERTOWN-John Henry Tharp, 83, passed away on Friday June 14th, 2019. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown.

John was born in Detroit, MI on March 17th, 1936 to the late James and Eleanor (Hymes) Tharp.

John attended the local schools before joining the United States Navy in 1954. During his time in the Navy, he worked as a naval photographer, and photography instructor. John spent time at various stations including Pearl Harbor, HI, Whidbey Island, WA, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. John’s service in the Navy ended in 1973.

After his time in the Navy, John became an ordained minister in 1978 in the Church of the Nazarene, and Pastored for over 40 years in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.

John had a sense of humor, loved telling corny jokes and enjoyed puppetry and sleight of hand. He loved watching wildlife, painting, playing snooker, billiards, and golf. He also loved watching Nascar and the Detroit Tigers.

John is survived by his loving wife Mary, his two children: Pastor Robert Tharp (Julie), Watertown, NY, and Barbara Tharp, Watertown, NY. He is also survived by three brothers: Richard Tharp, Odenton, MD, David Tharp, Ridgley, MD, and Larry Tharp, Ridgley, MD, two grandchildren: Cameron (Anne) Tharp, Kansas City, MO, and Alex (Sarah) Tharp, Waco, TX, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by his beloved dog Jill.

He is predeceased by his parents, and a sister, Nancy Meyer.

There will be a visitation from 10am-12pm with a memorial service at 12pm, Wednesday, June 19th, 2019 at the Life of the Nazarene Church at 535 Thompson Blvd, Watertown, NY 13601. The service will be officiated by Reverend Ron Graeflin. Online condolences may be made at www.ClevelandFHInc.com.

Phillip L. Jennings Sr.

A Memorial Mass for Phillip L. Jennings Sr., age 91 of Ogdensburg and formerly of Alexandria Bay will be held on Friday (June 21, 2019) at 1:00pm at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Burial will be at a later date at St. Cyril Cemetery. Mr. Jennings passed away at the St. Joseph’s Home early Friday morning (June 14, 2019) surrounded by his loving family.

Surviving is his wife of 71 years Jean (Cassaw) Jennings; eight children Michael (Alice) Jennings of Watertown, Richard (Carol) Jennings of Watertown, Barbara (Jerry) Kroeger of Ogdensburg, Donald (Sandra) Jennings of Davenport FL, Joan (Jeff) Hewitt of Nashville TN, Nancy Wheeler of Liverpool, James (Kathy) Jennings of Syracuse and Phillip (Sharon) Jennings Jr. of Memphis NY.

A daughter Laura Scinta; a brother Earl Jennings and a sister Helen Hudson predeceased him.

Phillip was born on January 25, 1928 in Gouverneur NY, a son of Guy & Marion (Myers) Jennings. He attended Gouverneur High School and later entered the US Army during WWII. He then married Jean Cassaw on June 30, 1948.

He was employed by NY Telephone as a foreman for 33 years in both Gouverneur and Alexandria Bay. He retired in 1985. Phillip was a charter member of the Gouverneur Elks Club, a member of the Gouverneur Fire Department, a member and past president of the Alexandria Bay Rotary Club, where he was also awarded the Paul Harris Award.

HOGANSBURG – Beatrice A. Cole, affectionately known to her family and friends as Muga, age 88, of State Route 37, passed away Wednesday evening, June 12, 2019 at Massena Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Beatrice was born June 5, 1931 in Hogansburg, the daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes (Jock) Lazore. She first attended St. Regis Mohawk Schools before graduating from Bombay High School. She later took courses in library science at Potsdam State University. On January 15, 1951, she married Barney Cole at St. Regis Catholic Church. He predeceased her on March 28, 2013.

In 1971, Beatrice was hired as one of the first three librarians for the Akwesasne Library and Cultural Center as a librarian. As a librarian, she had a great love for reading all types of literature. She continued working there until her retirement in 1993. Beatrice was a devout Catholic and lifelong communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church teaching catechism to many students throughout the years. She was a member of the American Legion Post #1479 Auxiliary, the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens, and the Akwesasne Death Benefits Group. Throughout her life she enjoyed various activities including bingo, bowling, golfing, visiting the casino, and radio bingo. She loved to travel and over the years visited many places, including Italy to see the Pope. She cherished the friendships she made throughout her life and especially enjoyed her visits with Sister Mary Christine Taylor. She will be sadly missed by her dearest friend and companion, her cat Penny.

Beatrice is survived by her children, Karen White of Hogansburg; Glory Cole and her husband, Peter Dibble of Massena; Cynthia Cole and her companion, Dennis Sarro of Hogansburg; Judy Laffin and her companion, Carson Swamp of Hogansburg; Barney Cole Jr. and his wife, Donna of Boston, MA; and Robert “Bobby” Cole and his companion, Desiree Finster of Syracuse; her chosen son Jordan Cole and chosen daughter Danielle Cole, both of Hogansbug; 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchild; her sister, Edna “Bunty” Cook of Glendora, CA; many cousins, nieces and nephews including a chosen nephew, Eli Tarbell of Hogansburg; her godchildren, Alan Cree and Francis “Mimi” Cole; and her dear friend, Julia David.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Arthur, Harold “Skeezix”, Ashley, and Glenn Lazore; her sister, Juanita Ashton, and her godson, Wally Jock.

Friends may call on Monday starting at 1:00 PM at Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Center until 2:00 PM Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday 3:00 PM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Harold White

Waddington: Harold White of Waddington died at home Monday, June 10, 2019 at the age of 97, after a short illness. He was the son of Verner and Edith White of Morristown.

Mr. White was a lieutenant in the Army Air Force from 1942 through 1945, serving as a B-17 co-pilot and pilot. He completed his tour of 35 missions with the 390th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, from bases in England, Italy, and the former Soviet Union. His decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

Harold White attended ATI (now SUNY-Canton) and graduated from Clarkson University in 1948. He worked at General Electric in Schenectady and IBM in Poughkeepsie. After retirement, he moved to Waddington in 1989.

He was married for 69 years to Flora Ann White, who died last year. They are survived by children Anne White and her husband Robert Wilhelm of Boston and Schroon Lake, and David White of Waddington. They are also survived by grandchildren Tom Wilhelm, Douglas and Amanda Dachille-White, Jeffrey White, and Amy White.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday July 6 at 12:00 PM at Old Brookside Cemetery, Waddington. Following the prayer services, friends and family will be received at the 7 Maple Street home.

At the family’s request flowers are kindly declined, and memorial contributions may be made in Harold White’s name to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Box 452, Waddington, NY. Elmer F Schwendy

Elmer F Schwendy, 92, Old Town, Fl formerly from Copenhagen, where he farmed for many years, died June 7th at his home. Mr. Schwendy was employed at Suncoast Hospital for many years. Born August 14, 1926 in Croghan, NY son of Elmer Schwendy Sr and Ardene Kloster Oley. Surviving are three sons, Daniel, Joseph and Kenneth. Five daughters Bethany Manchester, Gayla Schwendy, Susan Pierce, Kathryn Murdock and Laurie Shauver, numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.Service will be held Wednesday June 26th at St. Mary’s in Copenhagen. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s cemetary.

NORTH BANGOR – Funeral services for 57 year old David R. Kingsley Jr., a resident of 120 Hogan Road, North Bangor, will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood with Rev. Lee Sweeney presiding. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at 7 p.m. Mr. Kingsley passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 10, 2019 while working in the woods behind his home.

David is survived by his wife of 25 years, Tamera, North Bangor; a son, Corey Cavanaugh , Norfolk; his two daughters, Kristina Hogan, Tupper Lake; Emily and John Bujold, Tupper Lake; his seven grandchildren, Leah, Eli, Jack, Madelyn, Natalie, Penelope, and Wyatt; his two brothers, Bryan and Brenda Kingsley, Rensselaer Falls and Michael Kingsley and his companion Gina Sinnen, Troy, NY; a sister, Lisa and Ronald Sharlow, Norwood; two step-children, Mackenzie Greenwood, North Bangor and Daniel Bell, Oneonta, NY as well as several nieces and nephews. David was pre-deceased by his parents Judith and David Kingsley Sr. and a son, David James Kingsley.

Born in Potsdam, NY on November 8, 1961 to the late David R. Kingsley Sr. and Judith Fetterly, David worked for a number of different construction companies, drove truck and had many other trades as well. In his spare time, David was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing and puttering around outside. Fredrica “Riki” Barkley

WATERTOWN — Fredrica “Riki” Barkley, 66, passed away on Thursday evening, June 13, 2019, at her home.

Fredrica was born on April 17, 1953 in Carthage, NY, a daughter to James F. and Arvilla (Schloeder) Blackwell. Riki graduated from Carthage Central School and went on to work at Northland Electric in Watertown for over 30 years. After the closing of Northland Electric, Riki obtained her LPN through Jefferson/Lewis BOCES. She worked for Jefferson County Public Health as well as doing private duty. She also coached high school tennis at Immaculate Heart Central School and had private tennis students. Recently, Riki worked for Family Care Home Program, providing supportive living to persons being reintroduced into the community after inpatient mental health hospitalization.

Riki served as a deacon at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Watertown. Her faith in Jesus sustained her during the good and difficult times. She and her companion, Katherine Barkley, had a commitment ceremony at Emmanuel Congregational Church in June of 2006 to vow their love for each other in the sight of their God and with the blessing of their Church. They were legally married on July 27, 2011, after NYS legalized same-sex marriage. Kathy passed away on February 3, 2016.

Riki was an avid Yankees baseball and Syracuse Orange basketball fan. She religiously followed both men’s and women’s professional tennis. Riki was skilled at the art of wood burning, making decorative pieces for friends and family. She also took pride in making sure the lawns around her home were well-groomed. She enjoyed feeding the birds and watching them, as well as spending time with her beloved dachshunds.

Riki is survived by her father, James Blackwell, Carthage, NY; her siblings, Leonard Blackwell, Durham, NC; James M. Blackwell, Wendell, NC; Carl Blackwell, Pugwash Nova Scotia, Canada; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She is predeceased by her mother, Arvilla Lafountain, and a sister, Tricia Lafountain.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, NY 13619 with Rev. Jane Wagner officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date.

Ronald is survived by his wife Lois McCasland; daughter, Jennifer (Jim) Ferguson; sons Jeff McCasland and Greg (Angela) McCasland; grandchildren Christopher (Cassandra) Ferguson and Ryan and Meghan Ferguson; Colin and Kevin McCasland, and a sister Rowena Burdett. He is predeceased by a brother, Frances McCasland.

Mr. Ronald L. McCasland was born on November 12, 1930 in Parishville, NY to the late John McCasland and Mayfred Moses McCasland. He was a graduate of Parishville Hopkinton High School in 1947. He was married to Lois Gilbert at Holy Cross Church in Hopkinton on December 27, 1950. He proudly served in the Army from 1950-1953 during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge he returned back home and went to work as a department manager at Montgomery Ward in Potsdam where he remained for over 40 years. He then managed Sperling’s Furniture Store for 10 years before retiring.

Ronald was very active in St. Mary’s Parish. He was a strong supporter of St. Mary’s School, including acting as president of the school’s board. He was heavily involved with the St. Mary’s Church Festival for years. Ron was also very supportive of Potsdam Junior Hockey, serving as a coach and on their hockey board for several years. Ron was a member of St. Mary’s Church, the Knights of Columbus, and a co-director of SERA/DOVS religious vocation ministry for the Diocese of Ogdensburg.

AKWESASNE — Barney J. Rourke, 94, of St. Regis Road, peacefully passed away Friday afternoon, June 14, 2019 at IAK HIH SOH THA Lodge with his loving family at his side.

Friends may call at the home of his nephew, Marshall and Janine Rourke, 89 Rourke Road, starting at 3:00 PM Monday until 9:00 AM Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, 10:00 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating. Burial with full military honors will follow the services in Rourke Family Cemetery.

Madrid: Larry “Joe” Dutton, of Cogswell Corners Road, Madrid, passed away on June 13, 2019 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with his loving family by his side. Friends and family are invited to call on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 5:00 until time of service at 8:00 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, Madrid. Per Joe’s wishes, the family would like to request casual attire to be worn. A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Char’s Bar in Morley at 2:00 pm.

Joe was born on May 25, 1955 in Sayre, PA, the son of the late James and Margaret (Fairlie) Dutton. He attended and graduated from Madrid Waddington Central School in 1973 and then joined the Airforce where he was a Communication Operator and later was honorably discharged. He married Joanne Merrill on September 2, 1978 in Berlin, Massachusetts. Joe worked construction for many years and later for Fastenal. He also worked at the Madrid Golf Course where he was a groundskeeper. Joe was a proud member of the Soul Seekers Bike Club and loved riding his motorcycle. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his family and was a man with an incredible sense of humor.

Joe is survived by his wife, Joanne of 40 years; a daughter, Heather Dutton of PA; a son, Jordan and wife Bianca Dutton of PA; 8 grandchildren, Ramsey, Kaleb, Jaymen. Aaliyah, Haleigh, Aubrey, Abbygail and Brayden; two great grandchildren, Isaac and Kaiden; his beloved dog, Trouble; two brothers, Charles Dutton of Rome, NY and John and wife Chong Dutton of Clinton, MA; three sisters, Margaret and John Dalton of Lake Clear, NY, Cheryl and Pat Ruddy of Waddington and Beverly Morrill of Zephyrhills, FL and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by a son, Brandon; five siblings, Janice Trimm, James Dutton Jr., Thomas Dutton, Barbara Dutton and Jean Corbin.

Barney J. Rourke

AKWESASNE — Barney J. Rourke, 94, of St. Regis Road, peacefully passed away Friday afternoon, June 14, 2019 at IAK HIH SOH THA Lodge with his loving family at his side.

Barney was born September 4, 1924 on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation, the son of the late Frank and Marion (Loft) Rourke. He attended schools on the reservation and on June 20, 2009, he was awarded this honorary diploma through Operation Education and Salmon River Central School. On December 4, 1943, he entered the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving his country during World War II in the Okinawa Theatre. He was honorably discharged from service on April 5, 1946. Barney was the last Marine Corps World War II Veteran from Akwesasne. On June 12, 1948, he married Viola E. Cook at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Bourget, officiating. They renewed their vows on their 65th wedding anniversary with family and friends present and Father Jerome Pastores, officiating. Viola predeceased him on July 15, 2014.

Barney was a lifelong ironworker with Local #440, working throughout the Northeast and Canada. As a proud veteran he was a life member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479, where he was a Past Commander, Life Member of the Marine Corps League and the VFW Post #1143. Barney was also a devout and lifelong communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church and Honorary Life Member of the Father Michael Jacobs Knights of Columbus Council #10423. He has a great love and passion for golf and was a member of various leagues including the Monday Morning League and the Cedar Golf Course traveling league. He was also a NY Yankees and NY Rangers fan and was the manager of the American Legion Baseball Team for many years. Barney loved to mow his lawn, tinkering and fixing things, visiting with his many friends, watching television, and would be seen riding around his community on his golf cart.

Barney is survived by his children, Cynthia Sawatis, Larry and Tassie Rourke, Marsha White, Sandra Rourke, Steven “Judgie” and Shelley Rourke, and Eileen Rourke and John McComber, a daughter-in-law, Veronica “Binky” Rourke, all of Akwesasne. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Evie Lynn Campbell, David and Christopher Sawatis, Ryan and Lauren White, Cami Campeau, Natasha Thompson Barnes, Nathan and Narissa Thompson, Margaret Rourke-Bay, Arif, Marc, Michael, Brett, Stacey, and Louis Rourke, Bucky Cook, Joanna Balcom, Sharlann, Blake, and Cara Mae Diabo; 29 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Carole Sharlow of North Lawrence; his godson, Nathan Thompson; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved dog, Coco.

In addition his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Evelyn M. Rourke on July 3, 2004; a son, Hubert Rourke on January 3, 2016; two granddaughters, Leslee Ann Rourke and Memphis Rain Carle; and his brothers, Andrew Rourke on May 30, 2002 and Joseph F. Rourke on October 13, 2008.

Friends may call at the home of his nephew, Marshall and Janine Rourke, 89 Rourke Road, starting at 3:00 PM Monday until 9:00 AM Wednesday.
