Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Visitation, Norfolk with Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley, Bishop of Ogdensburg, presiding, with the priests of the diocese concelebrating.. The homilist will be Msgr. Harry Snow pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Waddington and St. John the Baptist Church in Madrid. Reception of the body will be at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 20 with Msgr. John Murphy and calling hours will follow until 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Church of the Visitation Cemetery in Norfolk. Arrangements are with the Buck Funeral Home in Norfolk./ppFr. Papp was born in Norfolk, NY on September 6, 1929, son of the late Julius and Ethel Nagy Papp. After graduation form Norwood-Norfolk Central High School, Father entered Wadhams Hall in 1952. He completed his theological studies at St. Bernard’s Seminary in 1960 and was ordained at St. Mary’s Cathedral on April 2, 1960 by Most Rev. James J. Navagh. /ppFr. Papp’s first assignment was as an Assistant Pastor at St. John’s, Plattsburgh; later that year at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg, St. Mary’s, Waddington, followed by St. Mary’s, Clayton and St. James, Gouverneur. He was then assigned to St. Alexander’s, Morrisonville, St. John’s, Plattsburgh, and St. Agnes, Lake Placid. In 1971, Father Papp was named Administrator of St .George’s, Burke and then, was appointed pastor. Father was later pastor of St. Mary’s, Glenfield, and St. Rita’s, Deferiet. After a few months on a leave of absence, Father returned as an Associate pastor in St. Mary’s, Brushton, then temporary administrator of St. Edmund’s, Ellenburg, associate pastor in St. Mary’s, Champlain. In 1980, Father was temporary administrator at St. Mary’s, Cumberland Head, and then he was pastor at St. Therese in Newcomb. In 1982, he was associate pastor in St. Mary’s, Ticonderoga, St. Mary’s, Brushton and, in 1997, associate pastor in St. Mary’s, Potsdam. Father Papp retired in October of 2004. /ppFather Papp is survived by his sister Mary Molnar, Ogdensburg and a sister-in-law, Lulu Papp, Gouverneur as well as his nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his two brothers, Julius and Charles Papp and a sister, Pearl Molnar. In his spare time, Father enjoyed reading, tending to flowers gardens and eating out with his family and friends. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was appointed as a rural letter carrier for Harrisville Post Office in 1967, retiring in 1999./pp He married the love of his life Diane Boyd, daughter of the late Dr. Mrs. John D. Boyd, in 1973. Diane passed away January 17, 2015. They were members of the Gouverneur First United Methodist Church and attended Harrisville First United Methodist Church during their summer visits to camp./pp Phil was a life member of the Gouverneur Elks Lodge #2035, initiated in 1972, serving as Organist, Esquire, Lecturing Knight, Leading Knight, became Exalted Ruler in 1978, and served as Secretary 1979-1992 and 2002-2015. He also served as New York State Elks Association Vice President 1981-1982, District Deputy 2001-2002, and State Trustee 2006-2012./pp He also was a member of the Rural Mail Carriers Assoc., AARP, Lake Bonaparte Conservation Club, and Town of Diana Museum./pp Phil enjoyed reading, wood carving, spending winters at Sanibel Island, FL, summers at Lake Bonaparte, and was an avid NY Yankees fan./pp Phil is survived by his stepdaughters Cassandra and Peter Reynolds of Baldwinsville, Melanie Angelino and Terry Hogrefe of Fort Myers, FL, grandsons Eric, Andrew, and Matthew, and a granddaughter Maria. He is also survived by a brother Richard and Marilyn McCarthy of Texas, sisters Marilyn and Jay Stevens of Tennessee, Marie McCarthy and Linda Sgroi of Syracuse, nieces and nephews. James “Vince” Marra Sr.
pJames “Vince” Marra Sr., 90, Holcomb Street, passed away at his home on May 10, 2016./ppMr. Marra was born March 24, 1926 in Watertown a son of John and Mary Leana Marra. In January of 1944, he graduated from Watertown High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy. Due to having polio he tried three times to acquire a doctor’s release before finally being released to join the service. He proudly served as an Electricians Mate on the Battleship USS Texas until his discharge in June 7, 1946. While on the Texas, Mr. Marra saw combat action during the invasions of Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. On November 24, 1949, he married Eleanor M. Memolo at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Brooklyn, NY. The couple have been married for sixty-seven years./ppAfter being discharged from the US Navy he joined Pearson and Timmerman of Watertown as a union electrician. Shortly thereafter, he joined his brothers at Marra’s service station on Arsenal Street until the business was sold in 1986. He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, a member of the American Legion, VFW and the Italian American Civic Association. Mr. Marra enjoyed bowling, woodworking, and to garden, especially tending to his roses and vegetables. Always the mechanic, he loved to fix, repair and tinker with things. He was well respected for his patient outlook and taught his children the importance of self-sufficiency./ppSurviving besides his wife are a son, James (Jay) Jr. (Dawn), Ft. Calhoun, NE, three daughters, Pamela J. (Timothy) Clement, Patricia M. Virkler, Karen A. (Timothy) Adderley, all of Watertown, a sister, Rose DeFranco, Watertown, a sister-in-law, Christine (Dennis) Richardson, Jefferson, TX, nine grandchildren, Amy (Christopher) Gamber, Timothy (Meghan) Clement, David (Beverly) Virkler, John Clement, Michael Adderley and Allison Adderley, Anna Marra, Victoria Campbell, John “JD” Campbell and Ashley Campbell, six great grandchildren , several nieces and nephews. Two brothers Tony and Joe, and an infant sister all died before him./ppCalling hours will be Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 2-5pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. He also was a 43 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as associate patron./ppGeorge enjoyed fishing and gardening, and continued gardening from his wheelchair at the Summit Village at raised garden beds. pAngelo F. Crescenzi, 65, Frankfort, NY, passed away at his home on May 20, 2016./ppAngelo was born April 3, 1951 in Watertown a son of Samuel and Mary Pacific Crescenzi. He was a graduate of Immaculate Heart Academy, the Watertown School of Commerce and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration in 1984 from the Rochester Institute of Technology. /ppWhile living in Watertown he was employed with the Community Action Planning Council. In June of 2014, he retired from Xerox Corporation in Rochester where he was a comptroller for over thirty years, receiving the Xerox Hicap Award. He was an avid hunter and fisherman; enjoying both with his brother Rocco and nephew Todd. Angelo enjoyed his annual bass fishing tournament with his brother, nephews Jeff, Sam, Paulie, Shane and friend, Mike Chiodi. He also enjoyed salmon fishing in Sodus Bay with his extended family and best friend Harold Smith. /ppSurviving are a brother Rocco (Sharon), Watertown, two sisters, Jeanette Wisner and Kathy Crescenzi, both of Watertown, an uncle George (Beth) Searles, Adams Center, two aunts, Rita (Kenneth) Young, Florida and Angie Palazzoli, Utica, several cousins, nieces and nephews./ppCalling hours will be Thursday from 2-6 pm at the D.L. Jean had been the youngest telephone supervisor at the General Post Office in Bradford, England before her marriage. Later that year the couple moved to the U. S./ppAlong with her husband, she raised a family of four and ran Northern Glass Company until 1993. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church and a member of its finance committee. She loved spending time with her family, golfing, traveling and gardening. In 2012 she organized a garden party to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee./ppBesides her husband, John, she is survived by her four children, Linda Petrie, Watertown, Laura and Rob Hughes, Wantagh, Long Island, Ian and Debbie Hill, Watertown and Sean Hill, Brooklyn; seven grandchildren, Peter Hatch, Erin Hatch, Christine Petrie, Christopher Hill, Stephanie Farmer, Patricia Hughes and John Hughes; and two great grandchildren, Caleb Price and Mason Farmer; three nieces, two nephews and several cousins. Her sister, Margaret McDonald, died before her.
