pMr. George E. Burkum, age 91 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Friday, July 15, 2016 at his residence while under the care of his family and Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley. Arrangements are with the Garner Funeral Service. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Service on Monday, July 18th from 4-7pm. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, July 19th with Rev. Stephen Rocker celebrant. Burial will follow the service at the Visitation Cemetery in Norfolk, NY with full military honors. He is predeceased by his wife Thelma Burkum; son Danny Burkum; sisters Mae Reynolds, Ellen Russell, Doris Thompson and Rose Brown; and a brother Francis Burkum. /ppMr. George E. Burkum was born on April 1, 1925 in Pierrepont, NY to the late Edward Burkum and Irene Laiton. He attended the one room Copeland School House and then Potsdam Central School. In August of 1944 he entered the United States Army and he proudly served in many capacities until October of 1946. He served during WWII in the Pacific Campaign. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and Korea. Among the medals George was awarded while serving are the Army Occupation Meal, the Pacific Campaign medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and the Sharpshooter Medal. George loved to tell his Army stories and he even served as a barber for his platoon. George’s uniform and all of his medals will be on display at the American Legion in Norfolk, NY for years to come. /ppUpon his honorable discharge his returned to the United States and was married to Thelma Wolfe on February 27, 1947. He and Thelma raised many foster children. He worked at St. Lawrence Seaway, Alcoa, was a self-employed milk delivery man for 14 years and then he found his real love, working with horses as a farrier. George was very well known throughout New York and Vermont for his work on the horses fitting them with their shoes. George also loved to work with the trotting horses, he raced horses, he operated the starting gates for many harness racing events and was just well known all over the area as a great farrier. George also loved his time in the woods. One of his great hobbies was cutting wood. /pp/p

He attended schools in Hammond and Heuvelton. He entered the US Army on July 8, 1943 seeing the front-line duty with the medical troops of the 79th Division Ninth Army as a company aid man attached to an infantry unit. He was seriously wounded on February 23, 1945 during the Ruhr campaign in Germany and subsequently suffered the amputation of his right leg. After receiving treatment at an Evacuation Hospital in Belgium, he was hospitalized in the 34th General Hospital in England. He served in the Normandy offensive, Belgium and Germany. He was honorably discharged on January 29, 1946 receiving many medals to include the Purple Heart. /ppOn May 4, 1946 he married Mary Bresett at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Heuvelton with Rev. Harold Martin officiating. During his career he worked as a veterinary assistant, construction worker, working on the St. Lawrence Seaway Project and also worked for the Town of DePeyster Highway Department. In 1966, he then began his employment with Corning Glass Company in Canton as a truck driver until his retirement. He and his wife Mary also raised Angus Beef cattle for several years on their farm in DePeyster. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery in Fine./ppFred was born on September 24, 1929 in Gouverneur to the late George and Nellie (Fields) Kyer. He served in the United States Army from 1947 until his honorable discharge in 1949. He married Betty Lour Trimm on March 25, 1950. Betty passed away on April 2, 1986. Fred married Rosemary (Farrah) Hamilton on May 20, 1990./ppMr. Kyer worked for the Newton Falls Paper Mill for 40 years, retiring as a coater operator. Fred loved his family and embraced Rosemary’s family as his own as well. He would help anybody who needed it and was a gifted woodworker. He had helped clean up the Clifton-Fine Golf Course after the microburst damage and donated his time to make the Child Identification Program a success. Fred also loved to play golf and play his harmonica. Fred loved a good laugh and had a tremendous sense of humor./ppFred is survived by his wife, Rosemary Kyer of DeKalb Junction; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa Kyer of Ossining, NY; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Michael Pitts of Albany, NY; son-in-law, Garnold Hance; and step-children, Cathy and Rick Burt and Christine and Jim Trathen. pWATERTOWN- Frederick H. Phinney- age 97-passed away peacefully in his sleep on the 14th of July 2016 at Sunrise Care Facility in Jonesport, Maine. He was born December 20, 1918 in Hannibal, NY to Fred E. Phinney and Kathleen Gracey Phinney. He is the last of 4 siblings and was predeceased by two wives, Ruth Case Phinney and Elizabeth Hart Phinney, one son, John Phinney and two grandsons, Kristen Phinney and Trey Phinney. He is survived by 6 children- Donna, Kathleen, Frederick Jr., Anne, Geraldine and James, 22 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Early in life he worked peddling fruits and vegetables throughout the eastern Adirondacks from the back of a pickup truck. in 1944 he moved to Mannsville, Ny and founded River Valley Turkey Farms which grew to one of the largest poultry hatcheries in the Eastern United States hatching 25000 poults a week which were delivered to destinations in the US, Guatemala and Russia. He also founded Empire Polled Hereford Ranch and River Valley Inn before moving on as a Real Estate developer and investor. Fred was an avid woodsman and hunter whose life hobby took him to the western Rockies, Canadian Wilderness and Adirondack Mountains. He supported the National Rifle Association and his hunting expertise was shared with his children, grandchildren and friends./ppA funeral Mass will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville with Rev. She started working at the Robert Wood accounting firm during tax season in 1954 prior to working for the New York Air Brake for twenty five years, retiring in 1995. Mrs. Marconi also was employed with Sears Roebuck and Company serving in several positions. /ppMr. and Mrs. Marconi assisted Mr. Marconi’s brothers, Angelo and William at the Hotel Woodruff, Public Square, for several years. She and her husband operated the Ives Hill Country Club Restaurant with Mr. Marconi’s brother and sister-in-law, Chef Angelo and Marilyn Marconi in 1972. The four continued working together, operating the former Judy’s Wishing Well Restaurant in Watertown, for a time. /ppMrs. Marconi was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church. She was an avid tennis fan and a sports enthusiast. Some of her favorite teams were the NY Yankees, NY Giants and Syracuse Orange./ppSurviving are a son David J. Helen was born September 5, 1929 in Pulaski, NY, daughter of the late Paul L. Baratier and Louise Cavanaugh Baratier. In her early years she attended the one-room Grafton Square School, Parish, NY, later transferring to Mexico Academy & Central School, graduating June 25, 1946 at sixteen years of age./ppIn May 1948, Helen graduated from Powelson Business Institute in Syracuse, NY and in June 1948 commenced employment for Richards Motors in Pulaski, NY. In June 1954, she began work as a secretary for a Syracuse Law Firm. Simultaneously, she was also re-elected as secretary for the Mapleview Community Church of which she was a member since childhood./ppOn May 26, 1956, Helen married Frederick J. Ouderkirk of Sandy Creek, NY, and this year celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary./ppHelen was predeceased by brothers Ross Paul, Ronald Lynn, and Larry Burdette. She is survived by her husband Fred; a son John (Veronica) of Jacksonville, FL; brother Paul (Nancy) Baratier of DePeyster, NY; brother Nelson Baratier of Central Square, NY; sister Mary Baratier of Manlius, NY and sister Colleen Rought of Murrell’s Inlet, SC; and a host of nieces and nephews./ppHelen Pearl: Loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and aunt who always remembered the birthdays, anniversaries and all special occasions with cards and gifts. Always soft- spoken and a little shy - an immense help to her parents from everything to keeping the home to care of her five younger siblings./ppHelen’s passion was her love and knowledge of American antiques which she displayed with meticulous style and charm throughout her beautiful home. But, this pastime was only exceeded by both Helen and Fred attending all the home Auburn Doubledays games, happily enjoying that time with old friends and then after each game, walking hand in hand back to their car on those lovely warm summer evenings…going home. Robert G. Tyo
pLouisville: Robert G. Tyo, 93, peacefully passed away on July 16, 2016 at the Highland Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2016 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 22, 2016 11:00 am at St. Lawrence Church, Louisville with Rev. Mark R. Reilly officiating. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery./pp Robert was born on June 4, 1923 in Alexandria Bay, the son of the late John and Lillian (Sutton) Tyo. He attended school in the Brasher area and enlisted into the United States Army where he served during WWII. After the war, Robert came home and went to work at Alcoa for a short time. He then went to work with his Uncle Henry Sutton learning the carpentry trade. Robert became a self-employed carpenter for many years who traveled all around St. Lawrence County working. He later started working at the Highland Nursing Home in Massena in the maintenance department retiring from there with over 20 years. Robert married Mary C. Doud on July 27, 1946 at St. Lawrence Church, Louisville with Rev. Wilfred Nugent officiating. She predeceased him on February 7, 1999. He enjoyed gardening and working with wood, hand crafting things for his family. Robert was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1143, AMVETS Post#4 and was a charter member of the Louisville Fire Department./pp Robert is survived by seven of his children, Marie and Lawrence Taylor of Florida, Suzanne Hall of Massena, Joanne and Wayne Kellogg of Massena, Denise and Rene Neves of Louisville, Angela and Andrew Ibey of Chase Mills, John and Judy Tyo of Massena, Daniel Tyo Sr. of Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Debra Tyo of Louisville. He has 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren./pp He is also survived by two brothers, Paul and Elizabeth Tyo, Gerald and Kathleen Tyo of Louisville; A sister, Catherine “Kitty” LeBoeuf of Massena and a Sister-in-Law Rowena Tyo of Tennessee; Many nieces and nephews./pp Robert is predeceased by a son, Terrance Tyo; four brothers, Donald, Keith, Kenneth and Bernard Tyo; a sister, Ann Marie Tyo./pp In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in Robert’s memory to Trinity’s Angels at Work, 188 Main Street, Massena, NY 13662; St. Lawrence Cemetery Flag Pole Fund, c/o Twin Rivers FCU, 23 Phillips Street, Massena, NY 13662 or Disabled Veterans National Association, DVNF, P.O. Timothy Jay Clark “Clarkie”
pTimothy Jay Clark (“Clarkie”), 57, of Kannapolis, NC formerly from Watertown, NY passed away on July 15, 2016 with his family and friends by his side. /ppBorn in Watertown on April 11, 1959 to Janet R. Merrick and the late Howard E.Clark. Timothy was employed by the NYS Department of Corrections. He then was employed by FX Caprara for a short time. Timothy attended National Tractor Trailer School where he received his CDL and worked for Harris Teeter and most recently Fed Ex. Timothy was well known in the North Country for his passion for building Stock Cars./ppTimothy is survived by his companion Betty Stevenson and married to his estranged wife Cynthia L. Clark. A marriage ended in divorce to Julie Tibbles-Phillips./pp Also, two children Timothy Jay Clark Jr. Adams, NY and Jennifer A. (Clark) Pledger Fort Drum, NY. He is also survived by his mother Janet (Merrick) Clark Central Square, NY brother Kenneth J. Clark and wife Michelle, East Syracuse, NY and his sister Terri A. Clark of Central Square, NY and a granddaughter Carleigh A. Pledger Fort Drum, NY. Also an Aunt Eleanor (Clark) Canal Evans Mills, NY. He was predeceased by his father, Howard E.
