pNorfolk – David J. Barnes, 72, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016, surrounded by his family at Canton Potsdam Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop./ppDavid was born in Ogdensburg on November 17, 1943, son of the late Joseph and Lula (Goodnough) Barnes. He graduated from St. Lawrence Central School in 1962 and then from Barber School in Syracuse. He operated a Barber Shop in Winthrop for several years and in 1966, he went to work at ALCOA. After 35 years of service, he retired in 2001 from the Stock Room. He served as Union Trustee for Local #420, Brick and Glass Workers. He had four children from a previous marriage, Donna, David and Tracie. He married Terry Lavigne on April 22, 1988 in Stockholm, sharing a union of love and respect for over 28 years. /ppDavid was dedicated to his community; he was a coach for Tri Town Minor Hockey for many years, coaching the 1977 State Championship Team, a member of the Sons of Amvets, was a Town of Stockholm Assessor, served with the Winthrop Fire Department and was Fire Chief, then with the Brasher Winthrop Fire Department where he held a position of Fire Police. His dedication and hard work earned him the Fireman of the Year Award. He enjoyed boating, hunting, going to Las Vegas, NASCAR, driving around with his grandson at his side, his Stewart’s Coffee Club and scratch-off lottery tickets. Arthur was a member of St. John Chapel, Holy Family Parish and The Knights of Columbus, John Paul II Council Monsignor McNary Assembly #2299. Arthur is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia nee Johnson; sons, Andre` (Kimberly) of Miamisburg, Matthew (Amber) of Sunman, IN, Robert (Jill) of Seven Mile, Stephen of Oxford, Leon of Jackson Hole, WY, John (Kelly) of Lebanon; daughters, Mary (Patrick) Gannon of Middletown, Jean (Pete) Enyeart of Charlotte, NC, Michelle (Doug) Trenum of Trenton, Maureen Ruppert of Sabina, Barbara (Aaron) Short of Franklin; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Louise Farnsworth. They shared a blessed union until her passing in 1963. /ppHe proudly served his country in the US ARMY and was a Purple Heart recipient from the Korean Conflict. Bill was proud of the time in the service of his country./ppBill began work at ALCOA, and then owned and operated his own garage “Bills Atlantic Station” on Willow Street in Massena. And lastly, for many years, he worked as the maintenance supervisor for Dr. Henry J. Dobies. He was a handyman, and was good at it. /ppIn earlier years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. She graduated from Alexandria Bay High School. She married Clark VanBrocklin in Chickopee, MA, on September 2nd, 1954. He passed away on June 10th, 2001. /ppJane worked as a Medical Records Clerk at E.J. Noble/River Hospital for 16 years, retiring in 2005. She was active in St. Cyril’s Alter & Rosary Society./ppJane is survived by her sons, James R. VanBrocklin and Marcus L. He and his late wife Bozica were the center of a vibrant community in Potsdam, New York; his numerous close friends and students both locally and internationally are a testament to his kindness and character./ppHis scientific accomplishments are world-renowned- he has more than 500 papers to his name and was known as “Mr. Colloids” --- yet are nearly matched by his love of art, fine wine, and mountains. “Chaki” was an always-loving father and unparalleled babysitter to his grandson. Through his last moments, Egon strove to both be true to himself, and do right by those around him. He never abandoned his smile, sense of humor, and heartwarming winks. Every life around him was brighter for his presence./ppHe was predeceased by his wife Bozica and his sister Mira. In Croatia, he is survived by his nieces Zdravka and Zvonka, his nephews Zlatko, Ivan, and Mislav, and their families. She was later employed with Carthage Area Hospital in the Medical Records Department and for the past twelve years was a Medical Coder for MEDDAC at Ft. Drum.
