There will be no calling hours. /ppBorn March 17, 1935 in Watertown, son of Lyle and Ellen (Grothier) Smith, he graduated from Adams Center High School. He worked on the family farm on the Zoar Road in the Town of Watertown./ppHe married Patricia A. Parks of Adams Center on April 12, 1958 at the Emmanuel Congregational Church in Watertown with Rev. John C. Wentzel and Rev. Graham R. Hodges officiating. The couple operated the farm until retiring in 2001. Pat died April 21, 2003./ppHe is survived by one son, Matthew Smith, Watertown and his beloved Jodi Steele; two daughters and sons in law, Jennifer and Gene Loonan, Myrtle Beach, SC, Marcy and Dan Teal, Lowville, NY; seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren; one sister Mary Ellen (Clinton) Throop, Mission Veijo, CA; a brother in law David Thompson; sisters in law Barbara (David) Crandall and Carol Schnell; and nieces and nephews./ppHe is predeceased by a daughter Sara Elizabeth, a sister Janice Thompson, a niece Kathy Barrett and his brother in law Richard Schnell./ppGlenn was an avid cattle judge. He started this passion through 4-H dairy judging team. He represented New York on the national level and was selected for his outstanding work in county-wide, regional and state 4-H dairy judging. /ppGlenn was president of the Board of Directors of Rutland Hills Dairy Cooperative, Inc., a member of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau, and active in the Cooperative Extension Association of Jefferson County./ppHe was awarded Agricultural Extension Service Forage King in 1961 and 1963. He and his wife were also presented with honors, Distinguished Service to Agriculture by Jefferson County Farm Bureau in 1990./ppGlenn was known for his kind, pure heart, his business sense and work ethic. Richard Kennell
pFormerly of LaFargeville, NY./ppRichard Joseph Kennell, 88, formerly of LaFargeville, died July 26, 2016 at Maplewood Campus in Canton, NY, where he was a resident since June of 2013./ppBorn July 30, 1927, he was a son of the late Jonas & Mariam (Farney) Kennell. On September 27, 1947, he married Phyllis D. Osborne at the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church./ppMr. Kennell retired from dairy farming at the H. Ben Mitchell Farm in LaFargeville. After retirement he worked as a caretaker for Richard McSherry on Dingman’s Point in Alexandria Bay. He had also worked for the George Cook Farm and drove tractor trailer in his earlier years./ppHe enjoyed fishing, his hobby farm and just being in the great outdoors. Most of all he enjoyed being next to his wife, ”Philly”, holding her hand./ppRichard was a WWII Veteran, serving as a 61st Construction Battalion Seabee in the Philippines. During his time in uniform, he earned the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal and the Honorable Service Lapel Pin. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 1, 1946. In June of 2014, he went to Washington, D.C. on an Honor Flight. During the visit, he was able to visit the World War II Memorial. /ppRichard was a lifetime member of the American Legion in LaFargeville, where he served as Commander for two years, and was also a member of the VFW in Watertown. /ppMr. Kennell is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis of Maplewood Campus, Canton; his three daughters, Brenda Kennell Jones of Canton, Cindy Kennell of Clayton and Judy Kennell Richardson of LasVegas, NV. He will also be remembered by two grandsons, Jeff and Robert Jones and a granddaughter, Tina Glywa-Peters of Everett, WA./ppThe family will receive friends on Friday, August 5th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 21 Park Street, Canton. pEdward James Duffer, 76, passed away on Tuesday July 26 with his family present in his room. /ppEd was born on February 18, 1940 to Albert and Beulah Marolf Duffer in Croghan. He was disabled after a head trauma during his childhood. He lived at home and for some years at Rome State School. He then moved to the Lewis County General Hospital Extended Care Facility which he called home for 40 plus years on the fourth floor. /ppEd enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas where he often played Santa for the family parties. He also looked forward to his birthday and his annual visit to the Lewis County Fair. Ed was always interested in cars, trucks and animals of all kind. Ed showed his love for his family and his extended family of friends and staff. Snyder, 82, of 118 T Alexander Road, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 30, 2016 at Upstate University Hospital, with his sons by his side./ppLyn was born December 25, 1933 in the Town of Stockholm, the son of the late Samuel and Mabel Wescott Snyder. He attended Stockholm rural schools before graduating from Potsdam High School. Lynn entered the US Army on August 31, 1956 and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on August 29, 1958. On December 26, 1956 while home on leave, he married Kay Louise Hadley at the Potsdam First United Methodist Church with Rev. Merle Brown, officiating. Kay predeceased him on March 8, 2001. /ppLyn worked for New York Telephone as a mechanic for many years, retiring in 1995. He had previously worked for Scanlon’s Auto Parts and owned and operated Lyn’s Sunoco Station on Market Street for several years. He was a member of the Crary Mills Presbyterian Church and former member of the Handsome Pond Hunting Club. He truly enjoyed the time he spent outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, or the time he spent at his home on the water. /ppLyn is survived by his sons, Roger Snyder (Gwen Richards) of Potsdam; and Greg Snyder of Akron, NY; his grandchildren, Christopher and Allison Snyder and Jared and Justin Richards; his brother, Lester G. pWADDINGTON: Sidney H. Cantwell, born October 19, 1922 in San Francisco, CA to Sidney (Sr.) and Helen (Behrens) Cantwell passed away September 6, 2015 in Palo Alto, CA at the age of 92. Sid graduated from Burlingame High School in 1940. He attended San Francisco Junior College and worked at W.A. Bechtel Company before completing Flight Preparatory School in San Luis Obispo, Ca. He served in the Navy as an aviator during World War II, flying with squadron VPB 114 in specially modified B-24 bombers, patrolling for submarines. He remained active in the Naval Reserves, retiring after 25 years, earning the rank of Captain. After the War, he completed his civil engineering studies at San Jose State and joined the San Mateo County Engineering Department in 1948. Sid became Chief Deputy in 1963 and was elected to the office of Director in 1970. He was the last elected to this position as it later became an appointed office. Sid retired as Director of Public Works in March of 1982. In March, 1981, he successfully challenged a provision in San Mateo County’s retirement plan that prohibited including his war service time towards his county retirement pay. The Supreme Court later affirmed the lower court’s decision, ruling in his favor. Sid married Carol Walker of Burlingame in 1943. In 1947, they moved to Menlo Park where they raised their nine children. They later divorced and in 1991, Sid married Pauline Gunderson. Sid and Pauline traveled extensively abroad and in the U.S., including yearly visits to Pauline’s hometown of Waddington, New York. Sid was an avid golfer and was a member of the Shoreline Seniors at Shoreline Golf Links in Mountain View. Sid is survived by his wife of 24 years, Pauline of Palo Alto, his nine children, Ginny Stevenson of Roseville, Gail McCann (Bill) of Redwood City, Chuck (Linda) of Mountain View, Fran of Redwood City, Mary Shaw of Lincoln, Cathy Pearce of La Mesa, John (Charlene) of El Cerrito, Anne Solomon (Larry) of Windsor, and Diane Corso (Michael) of San Francisco, sister Jean Azevedo of Petaluma, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his former wife, Carol. He was our hero and always our “Go to Guy”. He was the epitome of honesty, humility, humor and unconditional love and we will miss him dearly. pUtica- Paul Douglas Clark, 56, formerly of Boonville, Port Leyden, and Beaver Falls, died at St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital, New Hartford on July 21, 2016./ppThe son of Richard A. and Karen Webster Clark, Paul grew up in Boonville, attending Adirondack Central School. His talents in music, art, and mechanics inspired many, and he was chosen often to play Taps at local military funerals. However, his options for a bright future were cut off by addiction, which he fought for the rest of his life. In spite of this struggle, Paul was able to progress through the levels of Emergency Medical Technician to become a Paramedic, serving as a volunteer with the Port Leyden Fire Company and professionally with various ambulance companies and medical flight organizations. A marriage to Genevieve Lawrence ended in divorce. Dawn Clark, Paul’s wife by a second marriage, resides in Lowville, NY. /ppPaul is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Aundrea Clark, and granddaughters, Samantha and Sarah (Liverpool, NY); daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and James Hogarth, and granddaughter, Kyah (Purley, UK); sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Jeff Moore (Dexter, NY), and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. /ppA memorial graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 9, at 3:00 pm in Port Leyden Cemetery.
