pJohn W. Armstrong of Highland Avenue, Massena, NY passed away on September 5th surrounded by his loving family and Hospice. He was 76 years old and was born in Port Huron, Michigan./ppHe was a seasoned fisherman, with a great love of the outdoors and photography. He was an avid reader and spent many hours enjoying the wide variety of resources at Massena Public Library./ppJohn left a lasting impression teaching science to 7th and 8th grade students for 30 years in Novi, Michigan. He also served in the National Guard./ppUpon retirement he relocated to Massena, NY with his wife, Audrey Seguin Armstrong, a native of Massena./ppJohn was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Evelyn Armstrong. He is survived by his loving wife, Audrey; his son, Jeff Armstrong and wife, Laurie and their children, Grant and Rachael Armstrong; and his twin brother Jacob Armstrong./ppJohn is also survived by his loving extended family—Frank and Patty Diagostino, Jill and Paul Murphy, Jack and Mary Ann Diagostino, 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren./ppJohn was a kind, gentle, and intelligent man. He will be missed by all who knew him./ppJohn’s wish was that there be no calling hours or funeral services. pCharles “Chuck” Willard Palmatier, 52, of Chaumont, NY, passed away on the morning of Saturday, August 27, in Elmira New York./ppChuck was born to Virginia and Charles Palmatier on October 10, 1963 in Gouverneur, New York. He was the General Manager of the Hilton Garden Inn in Horseheads, New York and was an active Board member for the Disabled Persons Action Organization (DPAO) of Watertown, New York./ppHe is survived by his wife, Jo-Anne; mother, Virginia; sisters Lori (Merritt) Reynolds and Paige (Efton) McCrea; younger brother Jason (Andrea) Palmatier; three step-children; Kristin/pp(Joshua) Tefft, Michael O’Hara and Michelle O’Hara and one grandson, Nathan Tefft along with nieces and nephews./ppHe is preceded in death by his father, Charles Palmatier./ppPer the deceased’s wishes, services will be minimal. Thomas, 82, and known as “Nana” to many, formerly of Clayton, passed away Sunday evening, September 4, 2016, at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown where she had resided since March 2009./ppThe funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 8, at 11AM at St. Mary’s Church, Clayton with Rev. Arthur J. LaBaff, pastor, presiding and burial will follow in Omar Cemetery. There will be no calling hours and arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton./ppMargaret was born in Clayton on April 15, 1934, daughter of Chester and Dorothy Carter Brown and she attended schools in Clayton. On October 26, 1951 she married Theodore J. Thomas in the rectory of St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Cyril Rapin officiating. Mr. Thomas, an electrician and machinist at New York Air Brake for 25 years, died May 28, 2007./ppShe had worked at Bertrand’s Motel, Frink Snow Plow, and Clayton Manufacturing before becoming a full time homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliaries of the Colon-Couch American Legion Post 821 and the Clayton Fire Dept. /ppNana was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed sewing, baking, chatting with friends and family and playing cards - especially with her grandchildren. Most generous with love and her incredible cookies, she always put others before herself. Her family was her world, and her devotion flourished while providing day care for her grandchildren - something she loved and enjoyed. Known for her ease in frequent conversation with even total strangers, she continued to visit with her nurses and make new friends always. Her comforting gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter and joking around will never be forgotten./ppShe is survived by her seven children, Joseph and wife, Linda, Clayton, Stephen and wife, Angela, Clayton, Marcia Stio and husband, Joe, Clayton, Daniel and wife, Carol, Cape Vincent, Virginia Seymour and companion, Michael Skule, Rochester, Kelly Skinner and husband, Scott, Clayton, and Susan Sullivan and companion, Chris Henchy, Cape Vincent; thirteen grandchildren, Terra Bach, Carly Schwarz, Katie Youngs, Ciel, Matt, Eric, Misty, Beth, and Allyson Thomas, Kassi Seymour, Ryan Skinner, and Maura and Aidan Sullivan; step granddaughter, Nicole Stio; four great grandchildren with one on the way and three step grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Reff and husband, Thomas, Altmar and Millicent Viscotha, Groton; sister-in-law, Diane Brown, Depauville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. (Garnsey) Meltzer, age 91, of West Palm Beach, Florida, passed away August 28th, 2016./ppMyrtle was born December 2nd, 1924, in Clayton, the daughter of Lawrence and Edna Benedict Garnsey./ppMyrtle was predeceased by her daughter, Mary Jane; her sisters, Norma Heyl and Phyllis Zimmer; and grandson, Lawrence Jr. Cullen./ppShe is survived by her children, Sherry L. Meltzer, Raymond and Lawrence Cullen, Michael Williams; grandchildren, Raymond and Michael Cullen; two great grandchildren; nieces Lottie Heyl, Karen Zimmer; nephews, David and Kurt Zimmer./ppShe lived in Florida for many years./ppCalling hours were held in West Palm Beach, Florida. /ppHer Funeral will be on Friday, September 9th, at 1pm, at the T.R. pWatertown- Mrs. Joan Marie Dozier, age 72, passed away peacefully September 3rd, at Upstate Medical University, where she was surrounded by her family, following a brief battle with Leukemia./ppJoan was born December 19th, 1943, in Brooklyn, NY, to Mable Howes and Michael McNeece. /ppShe attended schools in Brooklyn and Watertown./ppJoan married Norman Moss and had five daughters, Christine (James) Loomis of Watertown, Michelle Moss of Mississippi, Sherri (Brad) Thompson of Tennessee, Leslie (Jerrell Davis) Moss of Watertown, and Sandra Moss of Watertown. She had 18 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews./ppHer marriage to Norman ended in divorce./ppJoan received her LPN license from Jeff-Lewis Boces. She worked at Mercy Hospital in Watertown for several years before moving to Tennessee, where she met the love of her life. /ppShe married Ernest Dozier, and gained three more daughters, Laura (Kevin) Perkins, Amanda (Todd) Allen, and Sara (Michael) Burris, all of Tennessee. She also gained seven more grandchildren./ppJoan worked for and retired from Stallworth Rehab Facility in Nashville, Tennessee. Upon retiring, she and her “Bunny” moved to Watertown./ppShe loved her big family and enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible. She also loved the snow, Christmas, her cat Lacey, baking and playing cards./ppShe was predeceased by her parents, a sister, Ethel Mortellero, several step-siblings, and her great grandchildren, twins Nathan and Natalie McAllister./ppJoan lived a full live and will be greatly missed by all those who were blessed to know her./ppThere will be no calling hours or services per Joan’s requests. Instead a Celebration of Life will be held in her honor at the family’s discretion. /ppIn lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation./ppArrangements are with the TLC Funeral Home in Watertown./p

pPotsdam: Eileen Rose Tully McAvoy, 91, of Mayfield Drive, Potsdam passed away on Friday Sept. 2, 2016 at the River Hospital in Alexandria Bay, NY surrounded by her loving family. Friends and family may call the Phillips Memorial Home in Madrid from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. on Friday Sept. 9, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Held 10:00 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Church, Madrid with Msgr. C. John McAvoy officiating, Msgr. Harry Snow co-officiating with Deacon Dan McGrath. Burial to follow in the Parish Cemetery immediately following the services./ppEileen was born on March 26, 1925 in Newark, NJ the daughter of the late Thomas and Helena (Falter) Tully. She attended Martland Hospital School of Nursing in Newark, NJ. At the start of her career as a Registered Nurse, she worked Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York, NY./ppEileen and Neil J. McAvoy were married on October 16, 1948 in Caldwell, NJ. Eileen lived in Madrid until 2011, when she moved to the Mayfield Apartments in Potsdam./ppA mother of six children, she returned to work some years later as the office nurse for Dr. Samuel Livingston in Madrid. She also worked as a floor nurse one day a week at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, until her retirement in 1996./ppEileen is predeceased by her husband, Neil J. McAvoy, a daughter, Mary Ellen James, and a brother Thomas L. Tully./ppEileen is survived by of her children and their spouses, Thomas (Jeanine) McAvoy, of Black River, NY, Jill (David) Gottlieb of Harrisburg, PA, Lee Ann (Paul) of Rochester, NY, Debra (Brian) Grayson of Marion, NY and Michelle (Carl) Giovognoli of Archbald, PA. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren; Megan, Melissa, Christina, Kathleen, Julia, Rachel, Emma, Courtney, Neil, Emily, and Lily, eight great-grandchildren; Chase, Ashley, Jacob, Trevor, Taylor, Trenton, Evelyn, and Ellie along with her beloved brother in-law, Msgr. C. John McAvoy and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. /ppEileen’s most cherished times were those spent with her family. Eileen was a lifetime and very active member of St. John the Baptist Church, in Madrid. She served as a member of the Altar Rosary Society and was an associate member of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. She also had a lifelong commitment to the Girl Scouts of America and to her community. /ppShe found great spiritual enrichment attending the Annual Catholic Charismatic Conference held in the Diocese of Scranton, PA for many years with her daughter Michelle and husband Carl./ppThe McAvoy family sincerely thanks the nurses and doctors at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital & River Hospital in Alexandria Bay for their compassionate care. There are no calling hours scheduled./ppDonald passed away Sunday, September 4th at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County. He was 69 years old./ppBorn in Carthage November 11, 1946 he was a son to Donald O. and Nellie H. (Babcock) Clearo. He graduated from Carthage Central School in 1966, and enlisted with the United States Air Force in 1966 following graduation./ppFollowing 3 years of service he was honorably discharged in 1969, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He would later move back to Watertown where he was employed as a machinist by Watertown Air Brake until his retirement in 2012./ppOn August 24, 1973 he married Beulah F. Ross in Kansas. pRobert T. Jemison, age 96 of Lisbon passed away on Monday (Sept 5, 2016) at his home surrounded by his loving family. Calling hours will be held on Saturday (Sept 10th) from 2-4 & 6-8pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Entombment will be at Foxwood Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life service is planned for a later date. /ppSurviving is his wife of 68 years Helen Jemison; four sons Steven (Gayle) Jemison of Lisbon, David (Nancy) Jemison of Sarasota FL, Thomas (Sandra) Jemison of Nixa MO and Kenneth (Kathy) Rome of Liverpool; two daughters Martha (Stephen) Cole of Lisbon and Patricia Dean of Syracuse; 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews & cousins. His only sister Ruth Wheater predeceased him by one day./ppBob was born on September 20, 1919 in Ogdensburg NY, son of the late Leon & Bernice (Newton) Jemison. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy and served in the US Army from 1942 – 1946. During this time he witnessed the testing of the first atomic bomb, and helped track the first German V-2 rocket at White Sands Testing Grounds in New Mexico. He later married Helen M. Robson on June 27, 1948. During his career he was employed at Alcoa in Massena for 30 years, Smith Brothers in Lisbon as an electrician and later for the Town of Lisbon as a code officer until 2000 when he retired. /ppBob was a member of the First Congregational Church in Lisbon and enjoyed golfing, boating on the St. Lawrence River where he also taught area kids to water ski for many years. He and Helen also shared their love with those less fortunate by taking in many foster children, and foreign exchange students over the years./ppMemorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or the First Congregational Church in Lisbon. Lambert, Jr., age 79, of Gouverneur, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at his home./ppCalling hours for Leonard will be on Friday, September 9, 2016 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, September 10th from 10:00-11:00 a.m. with his funeral service starting at 11:00 a.m. at French Funeral Home in EDWARDS. Burial will follow at St. James Cemetery in Gouverneur. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com./ppLeonard was born on December 25, 1936 in Geneva, NY to the late Leonard W. and Mamie (Scott) Lambert Sr. He attended Gorham Central School and then later he entered into the United States Air Force. He worked for different farmers and also worked with heavy equipment running various dozers. Leonard married Helen Gage on April 17, 1959 in the Town of Seneca. They operated his parents farm in the Town of Gorham for two years. In 1962, they purchased a small vineyard in Yates County. He also worked for Shay Gas and Oil, Penn Yan Express, operated his own dozer, worked construction and worked for another vineyardist. In 1975, couple purchased and operated Thy Will Dairy Farm for 24 years in West Hermon. After retiring, they purchased a small home in the Town of Gouverneur, where Leonard enjoyed working for other farmers and began a hobby of woodworking. Throughout most of his life, he also enjoyed riding and working with horses./ppSurviving is his wife of 57 years, Helen; three sons, Todd and Dianna Lambert of DeGrasse, Leonard Aaron Lambert and his companion Jean Storie of Gouverneur and K. Kristan Lambert and his companion Ellen Johnson of Gouverneur; three daughters, Kelley and Stan Edick of Whitesboro, Tracy and Kelvin Perrigo of Gouverneur and Lorrine Lambert and her companion Larry M. Allen of Gouverneur; a brother, Edward Lambert of Branch Port, NY; a sister, Leola Melious of Winchester, VA; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews./ppLeonard is predeceased by his parents; a brother Donald Lambert; two sisters, Clara Saunderson and Mildred Woodley; and a grandson, Zachary Randall./ppDonations may be made in Leonard’s memory to the Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. pFOWLER/LAFARGEVILLE – Charles “Charlie” LaRose, age 79, formerly of Lafargeville, passed away at the Gouverneur Hospital after being stricken ill at home in Fowler./ppCalling hours will be at French Funeral Home in Gouverneur on Monday, September 12, 2016 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. His funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Donald Bryant officiating. Burial will be in the Depauville Memorial Cemetery./ppCharlie was born on May 30, 1937 in Depauville to the late Joseph and Flora (Darou) LaRose. He grew up in Depauville and graduated from the Lafargeville High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps until being medically discharged./ppCharlie married Barbara Denner on December 1, 1957. Together they owned and operated their dairy farm, “Level Acres” in Lafargeville. Mr. LaRose also worked as a driller for the Local Laborers Union #322. Barbara passed away on August 23, 2007. /ppCharlie enjoyed fiddling, was a member of the Black River Valley Fiddlers and the Country Stompers, liked to hunt, fish, and spend time with his family. In 2008 he moved to Fowler to be with his companion, Barb Brown./ppHis survivors include his daughter, Terese and Michael Cole of Gouverneur; two sons, Ronnie LaRose of Lafargeville and Timothy and Kim LaRose of Lafargeville; three sisters, Ida Mae Denner of Alexandria Bay, Debbie Dingman of Texas and JoAnne Ramsey of Florida; 8 grandchildren, Kristal and Bobby Newcombe, Mindy and Kevin Edney, Ashley and Kevin Swem, Rebeca, Matthew, Katelyn, Jacqueline, and Joseph LaRose; and 8 great-grandchildren, Kenzie, Kayla, and Konnor Newcombe, Hunter and Michael Swem, Jacob and Taylor Edney, and Jada LaRose./ppHe is also survived by his companion, Barb Brown of Fowler; and her children, Ernie and Laurie Brown of Warners, Kerry and Laurie Brown of Richville, and Cammy and Daniel Morrison of Brownville./ppCharlie is predeceased by his parents and a sister, Greta Antwine./ppCondolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com./p

pDaniel Roscoe Crean, 67, of Liverpool, passed away on Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, after a long illness. He was born in Syracuse on April 14th, 1949; son of Raymond H. and Doris (Harper) Crean. Dan graduated from Chittenango Central School in 1967 and went on to SUNY Potsdam, graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. He was an exceptional athlete in both high school and college basketball and was an active member of the Kanon Valley Golf Course for over twenty years. Throughout his career he worked for Travelers and CNA Insurance Company, before retiring as a Claims Adjuster from Fort Orange Insurance Company, Syracuse, in 2008. Dan was also an avid fisherman who lived most of his life in the Bridgeport/Lakeport area, and only recently moved to Liverpool./ppDaniel is survived by his sister Colleen (Edward) Nee, of Canton; nephews, James A. (Beth) Nee, of Canton, and Kevin D. (Carissa) Nee, of Virginia; niece Kathleen L. Wendell, 96, formerly of Henderson and currently a resident at the Diamond Hill Nursing & Rehab Center in Troy, passed September 6, 2016 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy./ppArrangements are with the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown. A graveside service will be Noon Friday, September 9th at Brookside Cemetery./ppThe family will host a celebration of her life following the burial at the Henderson Community Center from 1 to 4:30 p.m./ppMarjorie was born on September 19, 1919 in Watertown, the daughter of David Irland and Annabel Grace (Clark) Stadden./ppShe attended high school in Milton, PA and in 1936 graduated at the age of 16. In 1940 she graduated from Bucknell University with a Bachelors Degree in Education./ppFollowing school she worked briefly at the hospital in Watertown and as a substitute teacher at a country school in Milton, PA before returning to Watertown, where she worked for a local insurance company and then for the hospital again./ppShe married John Allen in 1941. The couple had two children, Warren and James Allen. The marriage ended in divorce./ppShe then married Roger S. Wendell on June 5, 1946 in South Weymouth, Mass. The couple resided in Henderson and Henderson Harbor the rest of their lives where she was a homemaker. The couple was married for 56 years, Mr. Wendell passed in 2002. /ppMarjorie was a lifelong “rock hound”, and was a charter member and long time treasurer of the Jefferson County Rock and Mineral Club. She was a founding member of the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club,, a Girl Scout leader for many years, talented photographer, artist, cook and seamstress. Watson, a resident of 240 Cogswell Coroners Road, Madrid, will be held Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 3 p.m. at the Madrid Cemetery with Pastor David Tulloch presiding. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Marine Corps Building in the community park in Madrid following the service. Mrs. Watson passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital with her family at her side./ppDiane is survived by her husband, Bryan, Madrid; a daughter, Bess and Stephen Bonno, Lisbon; six grandchildren, Sean Bates, Nickolas, Alainnah, Stephen “Earl” Jr., Hunter and Alexander Bonno; her four brothers, Flurence “Jr” LaPage, Wendell and Sandra LaPage, Calvin LaPage, Bruce LaPage; her three sisters, Marion and Ronald Bice, Sandra and Roy Weaver and Nancy Clary as well as several nieces and nephews. /pp Born in Potsdam, NY on July 28, 1958 to the late Flurence “Bun” and Helen Collett LaPage, she married Bryan M. Watson on June 25, 2011. Diane was employed for the St. Lawrence County Sherriff’s Office in the correctional facility as a cook for over 17 years. She was a member of the Ogdensburg Moose Lodge and enjoyed going to bingo, bowling, animals, especially her cats and visiting with her family and friends. Most recently, she enjoyed watching gameshows and reality shows on t.v. due to her lack of mobility. pMr. Elston M. Ecker, Retired School Superintendent, passed away September 4, 2016 at age 83. He was born in Altmar, NY on November 17, 1932, son of Elston A. and Reeta M. (Watts) Ecker. Elston graduated from Altmar-Parish High School at the age of 16 and received a BS from SUNY Oswego at age 19. He started his career as a math teacher in Brownville Central School. His career was interrupted by a two-year service in the army during the Korean War. Following the war, he returned to teaching math at Pulaski Central School and received a M.S. Degree in Education from Oswego. At the age of 24 he became the Elementary Principal of the Bolivar School in Chittenango and was the youngest School Administrator in N.Y. State. While working in Chittenango, he completed two years of graduate study at Syracuse University and received a School Superintendent Certificate. In 1966 he became the Business Administrator for the Fulton City Schools. From 1970 to 1992, he was the Superintendent of the Belleville Central Schools. During this time he was instrumental in initiating a merger between the Belleville and Henderson School Districts. The result was Belleville-Henderson Central School and a new k-12 building was constructed. He also served as Administrative Representative for Section 3 Athletics. Elston worked forty years in education and was a lifetime member of the National Educators Association, the NYS Teachers Association, and the Retired School Superintendents Association. He was an avid fisherman and sports enthusiast. Elston also enjoyed music, traveling and growing tomatoes. /ppHe is predeceased by his parents; a brother, Lisle Ecker and his sister, Lucille Kern. /ppElston is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Betty J. (Shutt) Ecker; his son, Bruce (Susan) Ecker of Baldwinsville; his daughter, Lynne (Steven) O’Hara from Westhampton, NY; five grandchildren, Gretchen, Stephanie, Derek, Nathaniel and Aaron, along with many loving nieces and nephews. /ppA Funeral service in celebration of Elston’s life will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 10:00 AM in the THOMAS J.
