Michael Dennis Matott

pMichael Dennis Matott, long-time Potsdam resident and born in Potsdam on March 15, 1947, passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016, surrounded by family at his daughter’s (Ranah Matott LeBouf) home in Morgantown, WV. /ppMichael had been battling esophageal cancer since the death of his wife, Natalie Haskins Matott. She passed away from complications of lung cancer last year on August 19, 2015, at her home in Fulton, NY, also surrounded by family./ppMichael and Natalie are survived by their children: Roma Matott, Jeremy Matott (East Aurora, NY), Ranah Matott LeBouf (Morgantown, WV), and Kendra Matott (Morgantown, WV); as well as four grandchildren: Oliver Matott, Olivia, Theodore, and Natalie Luca LeBouf. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Benjamin, and brother, Wendell Lee Matott, as well as many nieces and nephews. /ppHe is pre-deceased by his parents, Alice and Wendell (Benny) Matott, his sister, Lynn Matott Brundage, and his brother, David Wilmer Matott./ppA memorial service will be held for both Michael and Natalie next year in Northern New York. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the Morgantown Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia./ppMichael was a carpenter and craftsman with his own general contracting business. He could build anything, from furniture to houses, and was always in his element when working and being the boss-man./ppHe served in the US Navy, specifically in the Seabees, the US Naval Construction Force, during the Vietnam War in from 1968-69. He was a very patriotic soul./ppMichael loved to cook and could often be found preparing favorite dishes while listening to a CD from his massive collection of music. He also was an avid fisherman and spent much of his youth and adulthood out fishing in the many waterways of Northern New York./ppBoth Michael and Natalie had independent and indomitable spirits that impacted many people over the years, especially their children. Both will be greatly missed./p

Born in 1929 in Penfield, NY, married in 1951, she came to Watertown in 1961 where her husband, The Reverend John N. Campbell served as pastor at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church. Following his retirement in 1986, they relocated to Austin, Texas. /ppShe was employed by The Chase Manhatten Bank, Watertown, NY./ppShe leaves behind her husband and their two children Carol (Mrs. Edward Rebisz) and John Mark Campbell, both of whom are Texas residents./ppShe was a member of Triumphant Love Lutheran Church in Austin, but quilted with friends at Hutto Lutheran Church, supplying hundreds of quilts to the Lutheran World Relief. (Kirkub) Gilmartin he attended school in Peekskill, NY./ppHe entered the US Army on March 16, 1961 and was stationed at Fort Drum, NY and he was honorably discharged on March 15, 1963 as a PFC./ppWhile stationed at Fort Drum he met Sylvia C. Conant of Watertown whom he married on May 11, 1963 at the Emmanuel Congregational Church in Watertown. The couple resided in Watertown. He then worked for NY AirBrake as a machinist for 38 years, retiring in 2001. /ppMrs. Gilmartin worked at Jefferson County Department of Social Services for 18 years, retiring in 2004./ppHe was a member of the Black River American Legion. He loved cooking, going to garage sales and he enjoyed spending time with his family./ppAmong his survivors are his beloved wife of 53 years, Sylvia C. Gilmartin, Watertown; a son and daughter in law, Thomas W. and Issy H. He was predeceased by his father, Glen Davis, who died November 26, 2015; and a brother-in-law, Rev. Jim Cribbs./ppRobin was born on February 28, 1960 in Malone, NY, a son of the late Glen Davis and Jean Collette Davis. He graduated from Salmon River Central School in 1978, and from SUNY Potsdam in 1982. Robin worked as a loan officer for St. Lawrence National Bank in Carthage. On August 24, 1985, he married Anne E. Cribbs at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney, NY. Mr. Davis continued to work at the bank, until returning to school at Clarkson University, where he earned his MBA. In 1993, Robin began his employment at WWNY Channel 7 in Watertown as Business Manager, where he worked until the present time. /ppMr. Davis was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, where he was a cantor and lector. He was a member of B.P.O.E. #1762, Carthage Elks Lodge, and a long-time member of the Carlowden Country Club. Robin was a statistician for his wife’s Beaver River Central School Girls Varsity Swim Team. He was a member of the Beaver River Central School Relay for Life Team. He refereed hockey for a number of years, and had an opportunity to referee at The Empire State Games in Lake Placid, NY. /ppRobin enjoyed photography, playing the piano, and being a dance dad. He was a sports enthusiast, enjoying golf, kayaking, bowling, and playing on the Channel 7 softball, basketball and hockey teams. pBetty Virginia Root, 92, of Anthony Street, Alexandria Bay, peacefully passed away Wednesday at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg surrounded by her children. /ppBetty was born on August 6th, 1924 in Alexandria Bay, the daughter of Craig and Leona Schryver Rupert. She attended schools in Alexandria Bay and Syracuse. She married Grant Rogers in September of 1942, was a homemaker, and had three children, Douglas, Rupert and Teresa. Mr. Rogers passed away in July of 1957. She married Gerald Root in 1964 and he passed away in 1992./ppBetty enjoyed spending time at the island in Goose Bay, boating, swimming, and hunting with family and friends. She also enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, sewing, and gardening. She was one of the first to join the Alex Bay Ladies Golf League when it started and kept busy with Alex Bay Youth Center work. pPlattsburgh- Helen Elizabeth Harrington, 92, formerly of Adams Center, NY and Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY died on Thursday September 8, 2016 at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh, where she had been a resident since October 2014./ppHelen was born in Watertown, NY on the 27th of January 1924 and lived on the Morse family farm on Dry Hill Road. Following graduation from Watertown High School she enrolled in nursing school at the House of the Good Samaritan in Watertown. While in nursing school she enrolled as a World War II Nursing Corp Cadet. She left nursing school to marry Hollis Clifton Harrington on the 25th of December 1943 in Watertown, NY at the Stone Street Presbyterian Church. Hollis and Helen were the parents of two children Sharon and Sherwood. They resided on the Harrington family farm until their divorce in 1954. Helen, her parents and Sharon and Sherwood eventually settled on Church Street in Adams Center. She worked at various jobs in Watertown while the kids were in school. Once both Sharon and Sherwood had finished their education and moved away, Helen took classes at Jefferson Community College and obtained her Nursing LPN diploma. She continued to finally complete her training as a Registered Nurse at the age of 51, and graduated with honors. She worked at the House of the Good Samaritan in Watertown until moving to Plattsburgh. She retired in Plattsburgh as a Registered Nurse from CVPH Medical Center. Her grandmother, mother, daughter and daughter-in-law were also registered nurses./ppHer parents; Lena and Ray Morse, her two brothers Robert and Ray Morse passed away before her./ppSurviving are her daughter Sharon Kelly and her companion Bruce Fry of Plattsburgh, her granddaughter Elizabeth and her husband Tom Proietti and their children Olivia and Lena , two grandsons James and his wife Tammy Orr, their children Brady and Brooks and Robert Orr and his children Adelayde, Astrid and Nicholas. /ppAlso a son Sherwood and his wife Susan Harrington, Grass Lake, MI, a granddaughter, Dr. Jennifer Harrington and her husband Dr. James Strohschein, a grandson Kurt and his wife Melissa Harrington, their children Zachary and Bryce. pWilliam Holtzman, 84, passed away peacefully on September 8 in Elk Grove Village, IL. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sandra, and sister Ruth (late David) Fischman. He is survived by his children Michael (Heather Carroll), David, Jill Leichter, Wendy (Clayton) Chinn; grandchildren Justin, Steven, Zachary (Tina), Anna and Sam Leichter, and Samantha and Eleanor Chinn, great grandchildren Jaxon and Sasha, siblings Sylvia (late Sam) Lane, and Seymour (Evie) Holtzman, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1931, as a young man he helped his father, a furrier, make fur coats. He attended Wilkes College where he met Sandra, then received his engineering degree from Penn State and his PhD from the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wisconsin. For many years he was Director of Research at Knowlton Brothers, in Watertown, NY where he also served on the local school board as member and president. He then taught Paper Science and Engineering at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University. Dr. Bill (as he was known) was an avid tennis player, a music lover, and a huge fan of the National Parks which he visited as often as possible. He was a fair, intelligent and generous man and a natural teacher. A memorial gathering will take place on September 11th at the Leonard Memorial Funeral Home, 565 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn, IL, visitation at 11:00 am, service at noon. pLeo F. Bandych , 79, passed away on Sunday at The Grand in Rome with loving family by his side. Leo was born on March 21, 1937 in Utica NY, son of Walter and Victoria (Matuszczak) Bandych. Leo graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School in 1954. He enlisted in the US Air Force in November 1954. He served in the Strategic Air Command and received the Presidential Citation with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters and Wings. He was honorably discharged in September 1958. Leo worked as a salesman and owned a business in Lexington, Kentucky./ppHe leaves his children, Christopher, Kevin & Victoria and grandchildren, sisters; Mrs. Eleanor Virkler, West Winfield, Mrs. Helen (James) Keohane, Watertown, along with nieces and nephews. She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1961 and continued her education at SUNY Courtland where she received a Physical Education degree and transferred to Syracuse University to receive a Masters of Arts in Library and Information Science. /ppDuring her career she worked at Massena Central School as a librarian and also taught gymnastics for K-12 graders for a period. He is also survived by a brother, Chester (Janet) Bisnett of Norwood, NY and a sister, Olive Hatter of Tuscon, AZ and a number of nieces nephews and cousins./ppHe was predeceased by a grandson, Jared Clifford Adner and five siblings, Theodore and Clayton Bisnett, Evelyn Cunningham, Edna Gilbo & Marguerite St. John. /ppHe had a nickname for everyone, especially his wife whom he called “The Brat”./pp“Tunk” served in the US Navy as Seaman First Class from 1-28-44 to 12-26-45 aboard the DD 221 Simpson in the Atlantic Ocean during WWII. He was on Convoy Duty out of Cuba to tow targets at night. He was inducted into the Navy at Sampson, NY, where he completed basic training and was then sent to Norfolk, VA Naval Base./ppHe was a Life Member of Edward C. Seymour, Post #1231, Canton, NY having served as Commander from 1961-1968, 1971-1972 and 1975-1976./ppHe was an avid hunter, enjoying time spent at his hunting camp at West Pierrepont with family and friends./ppTunk was influential in the demolition of the following buildings: Fisher Hall at St. Lawrence University, Canton Town Hall after it was destroyed by fire, Clark’s Store and the Hotel R./p
