pCharles J. “Chuck” Elliott, 90, of Watertown passed away Sunday morning, November 20, 2016, at Samaritan Medical Center after a brief illness./ppCalling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Tuesday, November 22, from 4 - 8PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday, November 23, at 11AM with Rev. Jonas Tandayu, pastor, presiding and burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery./ppChuck was born in Watertown on October 13, 1926, son of Wilburt C. and Sarah O’Brien Elliott. He was a 1944 graduate of Watertown High School. He received his Bachelors of Civil Engineering from Clarkson College of Technology, and while there also played hockey and football./ppOn September 15, 1944 he entered the US Navy and served as an Aviation Electronic Technician. He was honorably discharged on July 7, 1946. He married Theresa Anne Edus on December 29, 1948 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Albert R. Plante officiating./ppChuck began his career with the Thousand Island State Parks in 1953. He started as a Park Engineer and retired as the Regional Director in September 1991 after 38 years of service to NYS. After his retirement, he was a partner in Elliott & Tinsley, Civil Engineering and Land Surveyors. As a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Chuck participated in several of the church’s organizations such as Holy Name Society and Parish Council. Following the fire that destroyed Sacred Heart Church, Chuck organized and chaired the committees as the building engineer that guided the construction of the present day church. He was a Board member of Development Authority of the North County (DANC) from 1985 – 1995, and, was a life member of the Northside Improvement League. A winner of the National Silver Beaver Award, Chuck remained a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as past president of the Jefferson-Lewis/ppBoy Scout Council as well as Commissioner of the Seaway Valley Council. He was involved with creating and planning the yearly International Boy Scout Camporee that is still held at Wellesley Island State Park today. Always a community minded volunteer, Chuck enjoyed gardening, swimming, and especially attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. /ppAlong with his wife, Theresa “Anne”, he is survived by his son, Wib Elliott (Jo), Granger, IN; four daughters, Betsy Elliott, Carol Tinsley (John), and Michele McKinney (Bill), all of Watertown, and Susan Ambrose (Roger) of Brownville; daughter-in-law, Kathryn Elliott, Wellesley Island; sixteen grandchildren, Bridget, James, Kate, Katie, Mitchell, Alex, Abbey, Zachary, Jayson, Maggie, Lauren, Kathryn, Brad, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Matthew; thirteen great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was pre-deceased by Charles “Mike” Elliott(son), William Elliott McKinney(grandson), and, Wilburt “Bill”. Nortz, 59, of Croghan, NY passed away peacefully on Friday November 18, 2016 at Homelife at Folts, Herkimer, NY with his loving family by his side./ppHe was born November 25, 1956 in Lowville, NY the son of Marie (Scott) Nortz and the late Harry Nortz. Mike was a graduate of Beaver River High School./ppMike was married to the former Lisa Bramhall, they celebrated 39 years together in May of this year. He was a loving husband and father, full of fun!/ppMike started working for Lyndaker Logging while still in high school. Later he worked at the Lewis Paper Mill in Beaver Falls for 19 years. In 2001 he started working as a carpenter for a few years. After that he was owner and operator of Nortz’s Custom Sawing in Croghan, NY. This was a passion of his and he took much pride in his job and the final product. Mike was a very talented wood worker, whether he was building a home or a cabinet or very unique furniture. He especially loved wood oddities and made the most of them in his own style./ppA man dedicated to his family, Mike’s life was centered around his loved ones. An avid outdoorsman, Mike enjoyed camping, four wheeling, snowmobiling and driving his ski boat with family and friends. He was given the nickname Driver Ed and was one of the best boat drivers for the Water Skiing Mountaineers Waterski club./ppMike was always willing to offer a helping hand to anyone that needed it. He donated lumber he had sawn to the Adirondack ATV Riders club for their clubhouse building in Pitcairn. He also was a member of the Long Pond Sno Sled Club and Brantingham Snomads for several years, grooming trails for both clubs in the winter months./ppHe is survived by his wife Lisa; two sons, Joshua and Lauren Nortz of Farmington, NY; Jeremy Nortz and Meghan Staring, of East Meredith, NY; a granddaughter, Leah Nortz; his mother Marie, two sisters, Barbara and Paul Cherbini and Pamela Nortz; four brothers, Ronald and Patsy Nortz, Harry and Linda Nortz, Patrick and Helen Nortz and Scott and Tammy Nortz, as well as, several nieces, nephews aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws./ppIn keeping with the wishes of the family there will be a memorial service at St. Stephens Church in Croghan, NY on Wednesday November 23rd at 10:30am with a meal to follow. pMASSENA – Ms. Lucille Marie Ackerman, affectionately known as “Lucy” to many, 81, peacefully passed away Sunday morning, November 20, 2016 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since January./pp Lucy was born June 3, 1935 in Potsdam, the daughter of Harold J. and Marion L. Monroe Ackerman. She attended Lost Nation Grammar School and graduated from Massena High School in 1954. She also took courses in Nurses’ Aide Training. /pp On October 1, 1955, Lucy started her career as a seamstress for Cornell’s Laundry and Dry Cleaning in Massena, working there for 60 years until her retirement in December 2015. She deeply cherished the memories, conversations, and friendships she made throughout those 60 years. pChaumont - Kenneth W. Van Doren, 84, of Chaumont, NY died on November 22 at the Samaritan Summit Village in Watertown NY./ppArrangements have been entrusted to the Becker-Cleveland Funeral Home, Chaumont, NY./ppKen was born September 21, 1932 to Jesse and Agnes (Conger) Van Doren. Ken was the Valedictorian of the 1950 Lyme Central Graduation Class. He attended Cornell University before returning home to assist his father with the family farm. On October 18, 1953 he married the former Joanne Mary West at the All Saints Church in Chaumont. He operated his own dairy farm near Chaumont from 1953 until 1959 when he joined GLF working in the Watertown, Evans Mills, and Adams Center stores. In 1963 he became manager of the GLF bulk feed facility in Canton. In 1969 he became a Soil Scientist with the USDA in Watertown mapping the soils of Jefferson County. In 1981 he relocated to Canton to map St. Lawrence County. From 1988 he mapped in the Cooperstown area until his retirement in 1992. /ppAfter moving back home to Chaumont Ken was active for many years in the Lyme Free Library and devoted to the care of Joanne his beloved wife of 63 years. /ppIn addition to being survived by his wife, he is survived by three sons, Peter (Catherine), Germantown MD, John (Lynn), Westborough MA and Tom (Karen), Houston TX, six grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and his sister Clara. Eugene Anthony DelConte
pEugene Anthony DelConte was born on May 21, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Antonio DelConte and Maria Baratta. He had two brothers and one sister, and was baptized on July 4, 1926, at Saint Donato Church, Philadelphia. He attended William Welsh Grammar School, Thomas Junior High School, and South Philadelphia High School, from which he graduated in 1944. He then worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard during the war years of 1944 to 1946. He entered Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, as a postulant, in 1946 and was received into the Order as a novice on September 9, 1948. After a year at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York, he professed simple vows on September 10, 1949. He attended Villanova College from 1949 to 1952 and was awarded a BA in Philosophy. He solemnized his commitment as an Augustinian on September 10, 1952, and pursued theological studies at Augustinian College, Washington, DC., with summers at the Catholic University, where he received an MA in Sociology in 1956. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1955, at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, by Bishop John McNamara./ppIn 1956, Father DelConte was assigned to Saint Joseph Friary, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, where he taught at Msgr. Bonner High School until 1960. That year he was transferred to Saint Augustine Parish, Troy, New York, as associate pastor. In 1968, he was appointed pastor at Assumption Parish, Lawrence, Massachusetts, and in 1971 was named pastor and prior at Holy Rosary Parish, Lawrence. In 1974 he became pastor at Assumption/Saint Paul Parish, Mechanicville, New York, where he served for one year, until appointed pastor at Saint John the Baptist Parish, Schaghticoke, New York. In 1979 he was assigned to Saint James Minor Parish, Carthage, New York, as associate pastor, and served there until 1997. He was then assigned as associate pastor at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, Philadelphia, where he remained until 1999 when he became prior of the National Novitiate of Blessed Stephen Bellesini in Racine, Wisconsin. In 2007, he was assigned to Saint Rita of Cascia Shrine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he assisted the parish and the Shrine, particularly in the ministry of reconciliation./ppFather DelConte underwent surgery on November 8, 2016 and, while in recovery, suffered a debilitating stroke. On November 16th he was transferred to the Health Care Unit of the Villanova Monastery, where he passed over to the Lord on Sunday, November 20, 2016, the Solemnity of Christ the King./ppFather Gene is remembered as a faithful friar and a devoted priest, who enjoyed the opportunities which community life offered to be welcoming and hospitable. His faith was uncomplicated, his sense of humor engaging, his company appealing. His talents were many, and will continue to be the gift he shares for a long time to come through the art he created./ppFather DelConte’s nearly twenty years of service to the people of the north country went far beyond his normal duties as a parish priest. He was so very active and forever welcomed by the students and faculty of Augustinian Academy. A common sight would have six or ten youngsters clustered around Father Del, as they called him, bringing him back to the rectory, or to the principal’s office. His tremendous ability for decoration enhanced many social gatherings. His eye for color was a great assist in the repair and redecoration of Saint James Church. Sidney Thomson
pSidney Thomson, 84, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 12, 2016 in the Rome Memorial Hospital Residential Healthcare Facility./ppHe was born on March 3, 1932 in Canton, NY; the son of the late, Sidney and Mearle Petotte Thomson. On November 11, 1961, Sid was united in marriage to the former Shirley Bowman; a blessed union of almost 50 years until her passing which occurred on February 17, 2011. Sid joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged after three years. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1954 where he faithfully served his country until he retired in 1971. After retiring from the Air Force he moved back to Rome and was employed with Carl’s Drugs, again retiring in 1991. Sid was a life member of Rome Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2246, Westernville American Legion Post #1846, and Rome Elks Lodge #96. He was a passionate golfer and was a member of Mohawk Glen Golf Club and many local golf leagues./ppHe is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Mark Hall of Westernville; a son, William Scott “Scooter” Thomson of Westernville; two grandsons, Derek Hall of Westernville and Jeremy and Kandice Thomson of Rome; a great granddaughter, Aubrey Thomson; a sister, Ethel Bowman of Governeur; several nieces and nephews; and many friends./ppSid was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Thomson./ppThe family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff of Rome Memorial Hospital’s Residential Healthcare Facility for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Sid and to his bus driver, Joe Taverna./ppIn keeping with Sid’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services./ppThe family is being sevred by the Gulla Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 209 N. pWATERTOWN- Charles D. (Chuck) Brennan, 73, of Main Street died on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the Samaritan Medical Center. He was born on January 23, 1943 in Watertown to Charles and Dorothy Smith Brennan. He attended school in Watertown. He served in the United States Army from 1965-1973, where he served in the Vietnam War, where he was a Military Policeman. /ppHe married Starr Sandra Granger on December 7, 1968 in Watertown, New York. He worked for the New York Airbrake in Watertown, the last 16 years he worked at Samaritan Medical Center as a Transporter./ppHe is survived by his wife, Starr, Watertown; a sister, Donna (Charles) Rawson, Dexter; a brother in law, Ronald & Margaret (Peggy) Granger, Watertown; a sister in law, Elaine Granger, Watertown; a brother in law, Dick (Fran) Granger, Ohio; 3 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews./ppHe is predeceased by a sister, Pat (Harry) Martin, Bill Granger, Terry (Nancy) Granger, John Granger, and Eugene Granger./ppHe loved his cats and all animals, sports, especially football, racing, gambling, and politics./ppServices will be held privately. Doris A. Longway
pDoris Arlene Longway passed away peacefully 11/18/16 at Manor Hill Assisted Living facility where she had resided for the past 2 and half years. She was born April 9, 1929 to George and Harriet (Joles) Longway in Brownville, NY. She graduated from Copenhagen Central School and Watertown School of Commerce. Initially her jobs were secretarial and book keeping. Later she drove school bus, owned and ran a motel and managed Longway’s Diner. She also ran the home farm raising beef cattle. For several years she sold homemade bread and cinnamon rolls, hand churned butter and eggs from the farm./ppShe is survived by three daughters: Cindy Trautmann, Austin, Texas; Sherry (Glenn) Simpson Herdman, Angelica, NY; and Sharmaine (Rob) Moody, Alameda, California. She is also survived by two grandsons, Jeremy Trautmann and Jay Moody, step granddaughter Talia (Boris) VanDruff, and one great grandson. Other survivors include two sisters: Harriet Moulton, Charleston, South Carolina and Bettie Sprague, Watertown, NY. as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She is also survived by dear friends including the Davidson family and near daughter, Janice Riley. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Douglas, Leon, Leonard, Oliver, and Dennis; sisters Mildred Card and Regina Tanner. Her marriage to Ken Simpson ended in divorce./ppShe will be remembered as an extremely hard worker, for her love of animals, and for her knitting and needlepoint skills. She loved to travel and made several trips in the US ferrying parts for industries prior to Fedex and UPS. She fulfilled a lifelong dream when she traveled to Europe with daughter Sharmaine and was able to visit the Vatican./ppA memorial service in Watertown will be held in the future. The family wishes to thank all caregivers and staff at Manor Hills for their dedication, patience, humor and love they have freely shared. Flowers are gratefully declined. Tamie was predeceased by her father Walter L. Young, Sr. and a brother William Young./ppShe was born in Watertown, April 6, 1958, a daughter to Walter L. and Norma Kellogg Young. She graduated from Copenhagen Central School in 1976, receiving her LPN certificate from BOCES at graduation. Following her education, Tamie worked as an LPN in Alaska for 2 years. She returned to the North Country and worked at Mercy Hospital and Madonna Home as an LPN for over 30 years until the facility closed. Tamie lived with and cared for her mother for many years in Copenhagen./ppTamie was a member of the Copenhagen American Legion and worked for the Jefferson County Board of Elections for many years.
