pMrs. Rita Marjorie Post Gaffney, age 85, Elberton, died Monday, May 16, 2016, at Gentiva Hospice at Athens Regional Medical Center./ppRita was born October 5, 1930, in Norwood, NY; the daughter of the late Charles J. and Mary Post. She was a graduate of Norwood High School and the Rochester Business Institute. She was employed before marriage as a physician’s assistant. Rita also worked for the Elbert County School System, and was active in the Elbert Memorial Hospital Auxiliary./ppA devoted wife and mother, Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Gaffney, two sisters: Ann Duffy of Ogdensburg, NY, and Peggy Pusateri of Williamsville, NY; and a brother, Joe Post of Norwood, NY./ppRita is survived by three daughters, Mary Ellen Castronova of Hixson, TN, Peggy Powers of Elberton, and Patricia Jensen of Hartwell; and three sons: Richard Gaffney of Phoenix AZ, Steve Gaffney of Watkinsville, and Mary Gaffney of Winterville. ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also surive her. She is also survived by three sisters: Molly Morgan of Potsdam, NY, Eileen Donovan of Princeton Junction NJ, Jean Doran of Seneca SC; and a brother, Paul Post of Massena, NY./ppThe family received friends on May, May 23 at 7:00 pm and Rosary followed at 8:30 pm at Hicks Funeral home. A funeral mass for Mrs. Gaffney was held Tuesday, May 24 at 11 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 155 Forest Avenue in Elberton, with Father Rafael Castano officiating. Interment followed at Elmhurst Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: Howard Gailey, Bill Gaffney, Mike Gaffney, Adam Powers, Joe Beaver, and Charles Sartain. Member of the Elbert Memorial Hospital Auxiliary served as honorary pallbearers. /p
