Chapin, age 88, of Gouverneur, passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Country Manor Nursing Home in Carthage./ppFuneral arrangements with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur are private for her family. Chapin on August 19, 1943 at her parents’ home in Fowler. Thelma and Merton owned and operated dairy farms in the Gouverneur area before purchasing the Dexter Home Bakery that they operated for 15 years. After retiring from the bakery they moved back to Gouverneur. They spent many happy years in their band together, The Country Travelers. Merton died on November 30, 1998./ppThelma was a member and past President and Treasurer of the Gouverneur Senior Citizens Group, was in the Gouverneur Senior Kitchen Band, and was an actively involved life member of the Gouverneur VFW Ladies Auxiliary./ppHer survivors include three daughters, Loretta and Con Rice, Linda Haney, Nancy and Ron Richardson; a son, Gary Chapin and Lila; two sisters, Marlene and Bob Quarry, Mavis Cole; and a brother, Donald Backus; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews./ppShe is predeceased by her husband; three brothers, John “Junior”, Roland, and Douglas Backus; and two sisters, Madeline Closs and Elaine Newcombe. /p

pCanton - Willa Jane Bogardus passed away after birth on February 23rd, 2016 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. She lived the entirety of her life over the course of the Tuesday afternoon, the whole time held and cared for by her adoring parents, Glen and Jessica Zeller Bogardus. Although her life was brief, she was long awaited and deeply loved. Her existence was her parents’ greatest joy. pNEW BREMEN - Hilda Elaine Farney, 94, died Saturday evening, February 27, 2016 at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility with her family at her side, and under the care of Lewis County Hospice and the 2nd floor nursing staff. Mrs. Farney was formerly of Karcher Estate in Castorland./ppMrs. Farney was born June 15, 1921 in Carthage the daughter of the late Walter and Lilla May (Goodenough) Stoddard, where she graduated from Carthage High School. On October 30, 1941, Hilda was united in marriage with Malcolm M. Farney. The couple made their home in New Bremen. Mr. Farney died in 1996./ppHilda retired as a court attendant with 20 years of service for the Lewis Count Court House. She previously worked at Lowville Academy in the cafeteria and drove school bus before going to work for the Lewis Count Sheriff’s Department. /ppSurviving are her two sons, Lansing M. Farney and his wife Tricia of Medford, OK; Loren L. Farney and his companion Janet Fleming of Lowville; and five grandchildren. She is predeceased by her grandson, Fred E. Farney, her two brothers, George and Arleigh Stoddard./ppHilda was a member of the Castorland Baptist Church, a life member of New Bremen Fire Department Auxiliary, and a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Northern New York Volunteer Fireman’s Organization./ppHilda loved the outdoors, she enjoyed snowmobiling, especially snowmobiling to camp to spend family time. She liked watching and feeding the birds, and baking. While at Karcher Estates her door was always open to family and friends./ppPer Hilda’s wishes, there are no services. Frank and his brother Vincent, were in business together for many years in Alexandria Bay, New York. pWATERTOWN- Irene G. Kolton, 85, died peacefully at home on February 29, 2016. Arrangements are under the direction of Cleveland Funeral Home of Watertown, NY./ppCalling hours will be at Cleveland Funeral Home at 404 Sherman Street on Thursday March 3, 2016 from 5 PM to 7 PM. A memorial service will be at First Presbyterian Church at 403 Washington Street in Watertown on Friday March 4, 2016 at 5 PM with Rev. Dr. Fred Garry presiding. /ppIrene was born in Kingston, Canada on September 6, 1930 to Gertrude and Wilton Sheppard. She attended schools in Kingston then graduated from nursing school at Ottawa Civic Hospital and Kingston General Hospital. /ppIrene was an accomplished soloist. It was while singing at a friend’s wedding that she met her future husband Stan L Kolton. They married on September 11, 1954 in Kingston at Princess Street United Church with Rev. Vatcher officiating. Stan then convinced her to come to “The Good Country,” the USA. They moved to Middletown NY where Irene worked as a nurse at Elizabeth Horton Hospital and Stan worked as a representative for Case Farm Machinery. They moved to Watertown NY in 1956 where Irene worked at House of the Good Samaritan for 2 years prior to becoming a stay at home mom for their 2 children, Kathryn Ann and Jeff. A son, Kevin John, died shortly after birth in 1968. Irene and Stan moved to a house on the St. Lawrence River in Alexandria Bay NY in 1984. They wintered in their motorhome in Hilton Head Island in SC for many years so Irene could play tennis year round. Irene continued to winter in Hilton Head until 2011. Stan died in 1992. /ppIrene continued to perform with Community Concert Singers and in the choir at First Presbyterian Church where she was also an Elder and Deacon. She was a member of the North Country Artists Guild for many years as well as Life Member of the Samaritan Medical Center Auxiliary, a Twig, Save the River, and the Jefferson County Historical Society. Irene was an accomplished artist, working in oils, watercolors, china painting and various crafts. She received several blue ribbons at the Jefferson County Fair and many of her paintings are on display in friend’s and family’s houses. She was an avid tennis player until she broke her hip while playing tennis at the age of 84. She also loved playing bridge, gardening, and travel as well as cooking, baking, decorating her home, and hot black coffee. Her cat Tisha was the love of her life. /ppIrene’s family will miss her energy and quick wit. Her daughter Kathryn Ann Kolton is married to Paul Archibald. They have one daughter Caitlin and live in Watertown. Son Jeff Kolton lives in Shelby NC. He is married to Lisa and has 3 children Bryan, Michael, and Sabrina. /ppIrene’s family wishes to thank her care providers over the past 9 months: Sue Roberts, Jessica Beasley, Delia Cox and Gwen Mills. Mr. McCollum, a retired employee of Oberdorfer Foundry in Dewitt, passed away August 23, 2001./ppBea worked at various businesses including the Sugar Bowl in Canton, Lederle Labs in Pearl River, MK Candles and Key Bank in Syracuse. She enjoyed visits to Turning Stone Casino and liked to travel./ppBea is survived by her two sons Stephen McCollum and his wife Rose of Billings, Montana, Stewart McCollum and his wife Mary Farley of Gouverneur, her grandchildren Stephen, Kyanne, Alexandra, Samantha, Daniel, and James, and several grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother Lyle Hale of Russell, several nieces and nephews. Bea is predeceased by her husband George, her parents, her daughter Sandra McCollum, a granddaughter Kelly McCollum, brothers Samuel “Emerson”, Herbert, Boyd, Wayne, and Charles Hale, sisters Audelia Burnett, Ella Bradley, Christine LaPlante, Ruth Chase, and Lila Westphal./ppMemorial donations in Bea’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice./p

pChaumont- Memorial services for Kenneth H. Pitcher, 67, of Chaumont will be held on Saturday March 5, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at the Christian Life Center Church in Chaumont, with Rev. Jim Hayes officiating. Military honors will be accorded following the memorial service. Mr. Pitcher departed this life to be with the Lord on Saturday February 27, 2016. /ppArrangements are under the direction of Becker-Cleveland Funeral Home, Chaumont./ppKenneth H. Pitcher was born on May 25, 1948 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was the eldest son of the late Albert and Mary (DeThomas) Pitcher. He was a 1966 graduate of East Brunswick High School. He went to serve his country in the United States Marine Corp. After his time in the Marine Corp he married his first wife Joanne Kucharski, they had two children; Ken Pitcher and Michelle Grekoski. Joanne sadly passed away in September of 1986. Ken went to work for Bell Atlantic, now known as Verizon. He then met Deborah Henderson and the couple were married in 1988. Kenneth adopted her two children; Jonathan and Jamein Henderson. After 32 years he retired from Verizon and the couple moved to Chaumont, New York in 2001. They later adopted their grandchildren, Aniyah Henderson and Jennifer Bernath. Kenneth will be remembered as a hard worker with a wonderful sense of humor, avid fisherman and dedicated family man, he will be truly missed./ppKenneth is survived by his wife Deborah Pitcher, his son Kenneth Pitcher and his daughter Michelle Grekoski both of New Jersey, his adopted children Jonathan, Jamein, Aniyah and Jennifer. Mr. LaClair was a millwright at St. Regis Paper Co., Deferiet, NY./ppShe was a member of the National Travelers Club, Philadelphia Easter Star and was Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah’s./ppAlice was an avid Syracuse basketball fan and enjoyed traveling and camping./ppSurvivors include two children; a son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Toni LaClair, Baldwinsville, NY; a daughter and son-in-law, Constance and Richard Frost, Watertown, NY; six grandchildren, Kimberly Glowish, Richie Frost, RaeAnne LaFave, Melissa McNulty, Adrienne Reynolds and Lauren LaClair; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie Beattie, CT; nieces, nephews and cousins./ppHer parents, husband Herschel in 1992 and a son Raymond in 1986, all died before her./ppBurial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa, NY.
