Mark S. Cole

Mark S. Cole, 55, of Watertown, passed away April 22, 2017, at the Samaritan Medical Center.

Mark was born June 6, 1961, in Watertown, a son of Donald and Marilyn Hastings Cole. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1979. On June 27, 1987, he married Deanna Kelly at Holy Family Church. Mark worked for several years at Cole Muffler, until he joined FABCO where he has been employed for the past thirty-three years, as a truss designer.

Mark enjoyed NASCAR, collecting sports cards, overnight trips to the casino, visiting family, and was a Syracuse University sports fan. He was an avid bowler, bowling a 300 game on September 11, 2001. Mark was known for his witty sense of humor and for always knowing how to have a good time. His friends and family will remember him as a calm, kindhearted, and selfless individual.

Surviving besides his wife and parents are a son, Justin M. Cole, Pittsburgh, PA, a daughter, Brittany L. (Dean) Rowe, Chattanooga, TN, a brother, Robert (Lori) Cole, Watertown, two sisters, Amy Cole, Schenectady, Brenda (Tom) Connor, Plano, TX, and several nieces and nephews.

Mark was looking forward to the birth of his first grandchild and his son’s graduation from graduate school.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4-7pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A prayer service will be held Wednesday at 9:15 am at the funeral home with a 10 am funeral mass at Holy Family Church with Reverend Steven Murray officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. HARRISVILLE – Francis C. Bell, 82, died Saturday morning, April 22, 2017 at the home of his daughter, Karen, on Lake Bonaparte.

Born in West Carthage on July 11, 1934, the son of Harold & Mabel Carter Bell, he graduated from West Carthage High School in 1953. He married Jane Evans on June 30, 1956 at the Harrisville Methodist Church. In 1957, he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1963. He was employed by the former Carbola in Natural Bridge and Crown Zellerbach in Carthage. He then worked as the Director of Operations for the Engineering Supply House on the former Camp Drum, then Fort Drum, until his retirement in 1995.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 782, Watertown, the American Legion, Bassett – Baxter Post #789, Carthage, he enjoyed dancing, traveling, trips to the Casino and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his daughters; Karen Bell and Valerie Bell and his daughter and her husband, Denise & John Avallone, all of Harrisville. Also surviving is his companion of the last four years, Ruth Trudeau and his grandchildren, Alicia Mera and her husband, Alvero, Dawn Gibson and her husband Dustin and Dustin Avallone and Vinny Avallone, his great grandchildren; Aiden and Axel Mera and Elsie and Ayva Gibson, as well as an expected great granddaughter in June, 2017, along with several brother and sister in laws and several nieces and nephews.

After the death of his wife, Jane, in 1988, he had a companion of 19 years, Virginia O’Keefe, who also predeceased him, as well as being predeceased by his daughter, Melody in 1979, a granddaughter Misty Avallone in 1988 and his brother, Curtis Bell.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday evening at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with the Rev. Canon Samuel P. Lundy officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Natural Bridge. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service, from 5 – 6 PM. Everyone is welcome to the Harrisville Fire Hall following the burial for further visitation and a memorial reception.

Burial will follow the services at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Colton. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Mr. Ames passed away Sunday morning, April 23, 2017 at his home.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 50 years, Renace “Rennie”, South Colton; a son, Daniel P. and his companion Donna McGinnis, Norwood; a daughter, Denise J. and Steven Folsom, Fine, NY; his three beloved grandchildren, Mallory Folsom, Jacob Folsom and Austin Ames. Wayne is also survived by his two brothers, John and Carol Ames, Canton and Edward and Jackie Ames, Roseville, CA as well as several nieces and nephews.

Born in Potsdam, NY on June 19, 1942 to the late Robert P. and Edna M. Rose Ames, Wayne graduated from Colton-Pierrepont Central School worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for St. Lawrence County for two years. Wayne was then drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1964-1966. Upon his return home from the service, Wayne married Renace A. LaPoint on April 15, 1967. He worked for Reynolds Metal in Massena for 37 years, retiring in 2001 as an Anode Tender. He was a member of the Birch Brook Hunting Club, the Colton Fire Department and the Parishville Amvets. Wayne was a meticulous person, taking great pride in his lawn care, making sure everything was put in its place and watching over Rennie. He enjoyed socializing with his family and friends and spending time with his grandchildren. Funeral service for Mrs. Nona Fisher, 92 of Morley will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 11:00am at the Scotch Presbyterian Church, Chipman, with Pastor Carl Pattison, officiating. Burial will be in the Madrid Cemetery. Nona passed away peacefully while at her home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, April 24, 2017, while under the care of Hospice of the St. Lawrence Valley.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home in Canton. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Scotch Presbyterian Church, 35 County Road 33; Madrid, New York 13660.

Nona is survived by her two sons, Rick (Sandy) Fisher of Morley and John (Lynn) Fisher of Madrid; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Susan LeClair and two sisters, Gladys Wagner and Anna VanHatten and two brothers, Ralph and Floyd Dunn predecease her.

Nona was born February 9, 1925 in Madrid, the daughter of the late Merton and Lena (Castle) Dunn. Nona married Edison Fisher on August 14, 1954 at the Scotch Presbyterian Church in Chipman, Edison predeceased her on October 4, 2009. Nona worked as a secretary for the St. Lawrence County Probation Department, was a clerk for the St. Lawrence Credit Union, she was a stenographer for New York State at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center retiring in 1987. Following her retirement she worked as a secretary at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton.

Nona was a women of faith, only her relationship with God surpassed the love and devotion she had for Edison and her family. She was a truly devoted wife and mother. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars and the First Presbyterian Church of Canton and later a member of the Scotch Presbyterian Church parish.

Constableville- Mary Anne O’Brien, 77, of Michigan Mills Road passed away on April 24, 2017 surrounded by her family.

She was born in Martinsburg, N.Y. on July 26, 1939, a daughter of Victor and Amelia Bedora Stoffle. Mary Anne grew up in Glenfield and graduated from General Martin High school in 1957. She was employed at Beaverite after graduating high school. She was united in marriage with Thomas G. O’Brien on July 23, 1966 at St. Mary’s Church, Glenfield. The couple then settled in Highmarket at their present home. Mary Anne enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, baking, her pets and spending time with grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Tom; two daughters, Mary O’Brien, Highmarket and Susie and Michael Arrigo, Port Leyden; grandchildren, Justin and Michelle O’Brien, Ashley and Andrew Schuler, Matthew Barrows, T.J. and Hannah Barrows and Nicholas, Joseph and Samuel Arrigo and great grand children, Victoria and Evelyn Schuler and Wyatt O’Brien. She was predeceased by a daughter Victoria Barrows in 2012, sisters, Ruth Lamont and Dorothy Ehlers and a brother, George Stoffle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Constableville with Rev. Lawrence Marullo officiating. SCHENECTADY, NY/HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Mary Ellen (Scanlon) Tesch, 65, of Rolling Hills Rd., Schenectady, formerly of Harrisville, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at the Hospice Inn of St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY. Her death followed a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Mary Ellen was born on April 21, 1952 in Utica, NY, the daughter of James J. and Margaret M. (Conboy) Scanlon, and was a 1970 graduate of Harrisville Central School. In 1974, she was graduated from The College of St. Rose in Albany where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education.

She married John H. Tesch, of Albany, on May 24, 1975.

Following college and her marriage, Mary Ellen’s first career began in education where she taught primarily 6th through 8th grade English and general education at various Catholic and public schools in the Albany area. Her second career was with the Department of State in Albany, from where she completed her service, retiring in 2014, as a Supervisor in the Division of Corporations, State Records, & UCC.

Throughout her life she enjoyed crafting, especially making jewelry, travels with family and her girlfriends, fighting for couch space with her adopted Boxer, “Oscar”, and above all, cherished any time spent with her grandchildren.

By her family’s characterization, Mary Ellen was the “definition of unconditional love”. Her light, her love, her laugh, her smile and her hugs brightened every room and life she walked into. Those rooms are still lit up, honoring, loving, celebrating and missing the life that made lives around her better because she was in it.

Surviving in addition to her husband, John, are three sons, Jeremy Tesch, Justin Tesch and Jacob Tesch, all of Albany; two grandchildren, Jaden and Kelsey Tesch, of Albany; her brother and sister-in-law, James E. and Caroline Scanlon, of Rome; five nieces, Kelly (Jesse) Tripp, of Rolesville, NC, Alicia Scanlon, of Syracuse, NY, Jennifer (Matthew) Mogel, of Lee Center, NY, Megan Scanlon, of NYC, NY, and Kristen Scanlon, of Boston, MA; her very special best friend, Claudia Fisher, of Albany (who was with her until the end); all of her very special longtime Harrisville girlfriends, and her many cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, who died in 2005, and her mother, who died in 2009.

Mary Ellen’s funeral will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. from the New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205, with the Rev. Alan Jupin, retired Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Schenectady, officiating. Burial will be in the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, April 26th, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jay A. Walter, age 78 of Sackets Harbor, passed away Monday morning at Hospice at Ellis Farm.

Jay was born October 3, 1938 in Buffalo, the son of Julius and Mildred Austin Walter. He graduated from Kensington High School and Paul Smiths’ College.

Jay was an Eagle Scout and received a certificate in 1953 for saving a life.

Jay entered the US Army in 1960 and served until 1963 when he went into the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1966.

Jay married Cora Gonyea on November 26, 1960 at Ft. Dix, N.J. Jay worked for Niagara Mohawk as Shift Supervisor in Saranac Lake, Potsdam and retired from Watertown in 1994 after 35 years.

He was a member of Colton Fire Dept. and Treasurer and late Sackets Harbor Fire Dept. and Treasurer. He was a member of Jefferson County Rock and Mineral Club and was an avid coin and stamp collector and enjoyed fishing. He also was a Boy Scout Leader for many years.

Jay is survived by his wife Cora; three children: Michael and Alicia Walter of Nicholville, NY, Albert Walter of Hammond, NY and Barbara and Tom Pishock of Fredericksburg, VA. Three grandchildren: Ty Walter of Medina, Ohio, Tommy Pishock of Fredericksburg, VA and Andrew Walter of Colton, NY; three step grandchildren, three great granddaughters, a brother Roy Walter of West Seneca, NY and a sister Joy (Al) Campisano of Albany, NY and nieces and nephews also survive.

Susan A. Kirch, 62 of Glen Park and formerly of Pillar Point; passed away unexpectedly at her home in Glen Park Sunday evening.

She was born on December 19, 1954 in Watertown, the daughter of Reginald and Lorna Hewlett Potter. She graduated from General Brown High School in 1973.

Susan married Dale Kirch in 1974. She lived on Pillar Point until recently moving to Glen Park. Dale passed away December 17, 2013.

Susan was an Insurance Agent working for Timerman-Adams Insurance Agency and later Dier Insurance.

She retired shortly after her husbands’ death.

She loved to garden and go antiquing and watching her granddaughter Olivia cheer.

Surviving are two children: Justin and Meri Kirch of Stuart, Florida and Amy and Brandon Kenney of Dexter. Grandchildren include Gavin Kirch, Layla Kirch of Stuart, FL., Olivia Kenney, Alex Kenney, and Evelyn Kenney of Dexter. She also has a sister Lisa Potter of Dexter and a sister-in-law Mabel (Gerald) Roedel of Dexter.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter with visitation from 12:00- 2:00 prior to the service. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery. John W. Farley

Kernersville, NC – Mr. John William Farley, 97, peacefully passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 22, 2017. John was born on February 5, 1920 in New York City, NY to Edward A. and Laura Burns Farley.

A WWII Veteran, he began travelling the world at the age of 18 as the youngest licensed Purser in the US Merchant Marines, and later as a Purser with the Pacific Overseas Airlines. From June 1943 to May 1944, he was an instructor in the Department of Shipping Economics at Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in New York. A graduate of both Syracuse University and SUNY Albany he pursued a career in public education beginning with Locust Valley and then Black River school districts. The remainder of his teaching career was spent with the Guilderland School District in both the high school and middle school as a Social Studies Teacher. Admired and respected by his many colleagues, John was elected President of the Teachers Union during his tenure.

Always a superb storyteller, John entertained all in his company with tales of his amazing adventures while serving his country. His penchant for travelling did not end with the war. After starting a family, he continued to explore the world and share his passions with his wife and two daughters. An avid reader and historian, he could weave a tale as interesting and informative as any professional writer. His devotion to his family and faith were unrivaled. As the patriarch of the Farley family, he was looked to for guidance and was always there to provide his love and support.

In addition to his parents and two infant sisters, John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Mildred Farley; four brothers, Albert, Paul, Richard and Robert, and nephew Peter Farley.

Surviving are his daughters, Laura R.Farley Belcastro, and Patricia K. Sprague and husband Ed; five grandchildren, Kayla Sprague Parsley, Alyssa Sprague, James Belcastro, Ashley Belcastro and Alexa Belcastro; two great grandchildren, Mason Parsley and Raelyn Kelley; a brother, Senator Hugh T. Farley, and 25 nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Church, Schenectady NY.

Ursula Gerhard

Ursula Gerhard, one-time resident of Massena for more than 30 years and later Waddington, NY, passed away peacefully December 17, 2016 in Manchester, New Hampshire. She was 92 years old.

Born October 10, 1924, and growing up in Germany Ursula immigrated to Toronto, Canada with her husband Ernst K. Gerhard and their two daughters in 1955 and subsequently relocated to Massena, New York in 1963.

During her time in Massena, Ursula worked as a substitute teacher, first at the Jefferson Middle School and then at the Madison Middle School. She demonstrated her athletic ability at Massena Central School by conducting a gymnastic routine on the parallel bars. Fresh air and exercise were important elements in Ursula’s life and as a result she became active with the Clarkson Women’s Hiking Group in Potsdam. They made many trips to her favorite mountains, the Adirondacks as they reminded her of the Alps. During the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid Ursula worked as a Pinkerton Security Guard at the entrance to the Olympic Village. It was here that she naturally befriended competing Athletes including Eric Heiden and several figure skaters. She returned to Massena with the US Hockey Team’s autographed hockey sticks. It was the year they won the Gold Medal.

Several years after her husband, Ernst passed away, Ursula decided to return to Germany to be with friends and relatives. She was generous with her time and held poetry and story readings for the elderly and also for elementary school children. She enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East visiting family, historic sites and churches. Her trips included a cruise from Norway to the North Pole where she rode in dog sleds, Christmas Markets in Germany and France, a trip to Bavaria, and a family vacation in Venice, Italy to celebrate her 80th birthday. She came to Waddington for summer visits and later returned to the United States in 20ll.

She is survived by her children; Anna Gerhard-Arnold and her husband, Guy of Waddington, Brigitte Gerhard of Rowland’s Castle, UK and Christoph and Norine Gerhard with their two children, Gabriel and Grace of New Hampshire.

A Memorial Service for Ursula will be held at the United Methodist Church, on Route 37 in Waddington on Saturday, April 29th at 2:00pm

Lois G. Isham

Lois G. Isham, 95, Dexter, widow of Charles Isham, passed away Monday April 25th at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where she had been a resident since April 18th.

Graveside services will be 1 pm Saturday, April 29th at Brookside Cemetery, Watertown.

Arrangements are with the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown.

She is survived by a son John R. Isham, Dexter; three grandchildren Terri (Jimmy) Coffey, Sara (George) Tapinekis, Hannah Isham; and 3 great-grandchildren Brenna, Danny, & Dylan Coffey. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband, Charles, and three siblings Gordon Kenfield, Graydon Kenfield, and Grace Baderman.

Born in Rodman July 6, 1921 she was a daughter to F. Madison and Sarah May (Reed) Kenfield. She was educated locally, and graduated from Adams Center High School. Lois worked in the boys and men’s department at Sears & Roebuck, managed the Northland Bank branch of NNY (Key Bank), was employed in the bookkeeping and accounting offices at Nortz Beverage on Bradley Street, and Watertown’s Halley Electric.

In 1944, she married Charles Isham in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Isham passed away in 1979. Following his passing Lois moved to Sarasota, Florida, returning to the north country five years ago to live with her son.

Lois was a former member of the Cosmopolitan Club.

NORTH BANGOR – Mr. David A. Mitchell, 61, of McGowan Road, unexpectedly passed away Monday evening, April 24, 2017 at his home.

Friends and family may call Saturday 1:00-4:00 PM at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, where funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM with Lay Pastor Martha Helmer, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society.

Robert G. Schrader, 88 of Williams Road, Rodman passed away peacefully at the Hospice House of Jefferson County on April 22, 2017.

The funeral service for Robert will be at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville on Friday, April 28th at 11:30 a.m., with calling hours to be at 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m., immediately preceding the service. Burial will be at the Linlithgo Cemetery in Columbia County on Monday, May 1st at 11:30 a.m.

Robert was born on December 10, 1928 in Hudson, NY, the oldest child of the late Alfred & Bernice (Ploss) Schrader. He grew up on the Schrader family farm in Blue Stores, Town of Livingston, Columbia County, NY and after graduating from Red Hook Central in 1946 he started his life long career of dairy farming.

Robert married Shirley Lussenhop on September 25, 1954 and they enjoyed 59 years together until Shirley passed away on December 1, 2013. In 1987, they sold the farm in the Hudson Valley and moved to Rural Hill, in southern Jefferson County, where they farmed for 8 years with their children. Robert retired from dairy farming in 1995 and they then moved to their present farm in Rodman.

Throughout his whole life, Robert was interested in all of the aspects of agriculture and still enjoyed reading his farming magazines until 3 weeks ago.

Robert is survived by his 2 daughters, Janet Schrader, Rodman; Emily Schrader, Washington, D.C. area, his son Craig, Ohio; a brother, Richard (Carol), Romulus, NY; a sister, Margie (Dan) Wurster, PA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank the staff at Watertown Internists, Samaritan Medical Center and Hospice of Jefferson County for their excellent care of Robert in recent months.

Lois Marie Robbins Potter passed away peacefully April 23, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born January 9th, 1940 to Ralph and Irene Mae Dudley Robbins of Lacona. She graduated as valedictorian from Sandy Creek Central School, where she played clarinet in the school band. She was a girl scout, and graduated from Oswego State University with a degree in education.

In 1960 she married Richard Potter of Orwell, they had their first of six children, Brenda, in 1962.In 1963 they purchased the farm that they still own to this day.

Lois loved her family, the family farm, all of her animals and her church the Orwell United Methodist Church. She taught elementary school for 10 years. She loved her students and often brought them home and treated them as her own.

Her favorite holiday was Christmas she would make her famous fudge and pies for holiday and Sunday family dinners. She enjoyed Friday night pizza night which has been a family tradition for over 40 years.

Lois was a kind and loving person who welcomed anyone and everyone into her home. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body. Lois worked side by side with her husband, Richard, on the farm for many years and the two were rarely ever apart. They recently celebrated 57 years of a loving happy marriage.

She is survived by her husband Richard, her mother Irene Robbins of Lacona, her sister, Judy (Larry) Stucky of Lacona, her brother, Leon (Jenny) Robbins of Lacona, her daughters Brenda (Nathan) Reynolds of Orwell, Nancy (Eric) Dana of Orwell , Shelley (Jon) Roser of Altmar; her sons Richard “Rick” (Maria) Potter of Phoenix, AZ and Milferd (Brandy) Potter of Orwell. She also had many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her daughter Elizabeth “Liz” Skellington, her father Ralph Robbins and her brother Floyd Robbins
