Byron Taggart Edwards was born in Sydney, Australia on October 4, 1937. Following a period of fragile health, he succumbed to cancer on September 27, 2017 while at home in Glen Gardner, NJ in the loving care of Françoise, his wife of 39 years.

Tag was born in Sydney, NSW to Josephine Brown Taggart and Alfred Stapley Edwards. Following the death of his father and the end of WWII, Tag returned to his maternal home in Watertown, NY. He attended Sherman Street Elementary School, Fay School in Southborough, MA and Phillips Exeter Academy. Tag then entered Harvard College where he took his AB in Art History. He played varsity lacrosse as a midfielder and was a member of one of Harvard’s final clubs, The Fly Club, where Tag met friends that would sustain him for life.

Following his 1959 graduation, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he served as an officer in amphibious tanks at Camp Pendleton and 29 Palms. Upon returning to civilian life he entered Harvard Business School in the class of 1964. While at Harvard, he met and married his first wife, the late Dr. Lee MacCormick Edwards.

During his early years, Tag was introduced to two things that would remain his passion for the rest of his life, the love of “wide open spaces...where two guns beat four aces,” and his family cottage compound at Henderson Harbor, NY on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. While his love of the outdoors carried him around the world, his heart always returned here, to fish for small mouth bass from his vintage Lyman, the Fanxa, or to set out decoys near Six Town Island, or to fish for salmon in the Salmon River in nearby Pulaski, NY.

He was an inveterate storyteller. These were the delight of his grandchildren who laughed, giggled and were amazed at his jokes, his tales of adventure and the rough stories of travel and days as a Marine. Tag thrilled at adventure. He and his dear wife, Françoise, spent a month each year in Vail, CO challenging the slopes at terrifying speed. He raced Formula Ford II cars at the Bridgehampton, NY speedway as his nail-biting friends watched from the grandstand.

Tag’s entire career was devoted to the paper and pulp industry, initially at St. Regis Paper Company into which his family’s company, Taggart Paper Mills (1866) had previously been merged. In successive years, St. Regis was acquired, first by Champion, later by International Paper Company. At the time of Tag’s retirement some twenty years ago, he was Executive Vice President for Champion’s vast forest lands and pulp production. He served for ten years on the Board of Winrock International Institute for Agricultural Development. Winthrop Rockefeller’s founding vision for Winrock was to advance the state of global agriculture to empower the disadvantaged, increase economic opportunity, and sustain natural resources. Tag was called as Winrock’s interim President & CEO from July-December 1998.

Tag was first and foremost a man of the outdoors. He fished and hunted gamebirds his entire life. During his retirement he was invariably seen hitting the road with Françoise, who soon came to outshoot Tag, for Stuttgart, AR for duck, Faulkton, SD for pheasant, the Miramichi River for Atlantic salmon, England and Scotland for pheasant and partridge, or Spain for red legged partridge. He and his close friends hunted grouse and fished for salmon for many years. He loved Key West and the pursuit of the grand slam of tarpon, permit and bonefish. Yet Tag’s interests had few limits, ranging from Kipling, much of which he could recite from memory, to the collection of Meissen and Vietnamese porcelain. He was addicted to reading and possessed deep knowledge of military history. Tag could relate with detail every important military engagement since Marathon in 490 BC. He read the complete series of Patrick O’Brian’s “Lucky Jack” Aubrey – Dr. Maturin series of Napoleonic-era seafaring adventures. He and Françoise loved classical ballet and were consistent supporters of the New York City Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre.

Generous in countless ways, Tag leaves behind his beloved wife Françoise Nguyen, his daughter Alison Edwards Curwen, his younger sister Josephine Edwards Bullard, his younger brother, Marcus Rice, MD, his grandchildren Darcy, Tag and Stapley Curwen, numerous nieces and nephews, and his cherished French Brittany, Xa.
