Eugene (Gene) Russell Black

Eugene (Gene) Russell Black passed away on Sat. March 10, 2018 in Egan, MN. He was born December 6, 1936 in Fulton, NY., the first child and only son of Russell L. Black and Mildred LaVere Black. He was predeceased by his parents and grandparents Thomas A. LaVere and Agnes Kelliher LaaVere and Peter N.Black and Florence Thompson Black. Gene attended Mexico, NY schools and was an enthusiastic player in football, baseball, basketball, track and field. He enjoyed all sports and made many life-long friends. Life for him was playing baseball In mornings, home for lunch, then skinny-dipping at local waterhole, Big Bend. One winter he pulled a friend out after the ice broke while ice skating. When the ice broke up in spring, they rode the ice floes from the dam near his house for about a mile down to the next dam. Summer he, with cronies, would bike or hitchike to Lake Ontario to swim, sometimes diving off the roof of a houseboat. Or they’d go to the golf course (Elmcrest) and play all day for $1.25. The owner would drive them home if they hitchhiked there. He was called the “original Fonz” by one friend. He said “ Happy Days should have been filmed in Mexico.” Gene had a paper route for a while, accompanied by his faithful dog, Butch. The side yard was the local baseball diamond. Always a pick up game on. Only one window broken! It doubled as a badminton field.

After high school he worked for a little while at Nestles in Fulton, where his father worked for 40 years. Gene bought a 1950 Hudson convertible, the “Blue Bomber”. He’d pay his sister to clean it and his golf clubs, make pudding, no instant then. She’d save it and he’d borrow it back. Gene installed a horn on the family car, which made the old-fashioned “AOOOGAH!” sound. His father wasn’t too happy, but he finally had fun too, blowing it at friends.

Gene joined the Air Force and was sent to Germany and Spain. Coming home on leave he alerted his mother and family friends to make chop suey. Delicious!. He made adventures wherever he went. He just missed getting in to see Bob Hope during a USO Tour. In service he studied weather and computers. He was sent to Offu t AFB in Omaha, Nebraska, where he met and married his first wife, Claudia. They had 5 children: Brian, Dean, Bianca, and twins Melanie and Marissa. After service, he had many computer programming jobs. Claudia and he divorced and he was a single father for a time. He met Georgia Griffin and her daughters Melanie and Daphne. After they married they had a son Shawn and daughters Lane and Monica. Shawn has Down Syndrome and was the light of his life. He is a great young man, hard worker and lives in a supervised apartment in MN.

Gene loved golf and thought he looked great in his loud!! pants and shoes. In later years he drove top level dealer cars to chauffeur Master PGA players and family members from airports to hotel, golf courses, shopping malls. He loved hobnobbing while waiting for them. More recently he used a Segway to travel as walking became troublesome. He even traveled down steep Pulaski Hill in Mexico. No one else would try it. When he was refused entrance using his Segway at Minn. Twins Stadium, Zoo and other places he contracted an attorney who worked pro bono for enforcement of disability laws. Gene demonstrated at the stadium, in the lion area at the zoo, and testified whenever asked. He let the executives and board members use it to understand it better. He was a driving force for it to be allowed and was proud they were successful. Gene was living at home with Georgia and was in hospice for two days before he passed. He is dearly missed by many. Gene was predeceased by daughter Melanie in 2009.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia, children, Brian, Dean, Bianca, Marissa, Melanie, Daphne, Shawn, Lane and Monica, 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Sisters Marilyn and Diane and several nieces and nephews also survive. He requested no services and was cremated. White’s Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Donations may be made in his memory to Special Olympics.

Sharon met Lawrence Mitchell with whom she found love and friendship; they were married on December 8, 2012.

For many years Sharon cared for many children in the community, as well as raising her own. She also worked as a mail carrier in Potsdam; a position she was very proud of and where the slippery winter roads never intimidated her.

Sharon embraced the role of caretaker to its fullest; putting forth her best efforts to always be present to her family and friends. She truly loved her family always having the best intentions for them; especially her children and grandchildren.

There was a liveliness about Sharon that was like no other. The more she embarrassed you, the more she loved you. She loved to laugh, listen to music, tell stories, and entertain. Sharon was a member of the “Clown Club” and excelled at her role of “Happy the Clown”. Sharon was able to show her strength during her battles with breast cancer.

It would be safe to say if you were out on an excursion and couldn’t find Sharon, you could find her shopping. At one time she also named herself the “QVC Queen”.

Her beautiful, energetic, and caring presence will be missed by her family who love and survive her; husband, Lawrence; mother, Nellie Foster; 2 daughters and a son-in-law: Donna Johnson and Jamie and Eric LaBrake, 2 sons and a daughter-in-law: Leon and Crystal Shorette, and Israel Quitcon; step-children: Sandra and Daniel Williams, Tamara and Brent Bedard, Larry and Amy Mitchell, and Edward and Victoria Mitchell; son in law, Alan Downey; her cherished grandchildren: Eric Jr., Nathaniel, Evan, and Jeremiah LaBrake, Siana, Jase, and Reese Shorette, Tyler Jock, Ayden LaBaff, Daniel and Matthew Williams, Nicole Ostertag, Kyle, Eric, and Ryan Bedard, Rebecca and Jessica Mitchell, Marissa and Nicolas Mitchell; and several great-grandchildren.

Survivors also include her siblings: Ceylon and Muriel Foster Jr., Leo and Susan Foster, Randy Foster and Rita Barber, Shirley Colbert, Wayne and Bryn Foster, Steven and Linda Foster, Gary and Crystal Foster, Kerry and Kathy Foster, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She endured unimaginable loss in her life; losing her daughter Amber L. (Johnson) Downey just three weeks ago. Sharon was also predeceased by: her father, Ceylon Foster; brother, Joseph Foster; sister, Charlene Foster; and her grandson Corey Jock.

Visitation will be Monday April 23rd from 4 – 7 pm. Sharon’s Funeral Service and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday April 24th at 11:00 am at Church of the Holy Cross in Hopkinton with Fr. Alfred Fish officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery in Brasher Falls.

For those wishing to express and act of kindness, memorial contributions may be made in Sharon’s honor to the American Cancer Society, or to the family to set up a scholarship fund for Sharon’s grandchildren.
