James E. Barnard, 96, Green Settlement Road, Adams Center, died on April 10, 2018 at the Hospice House of Jefferson County, Watertown, NY. Memorial services will be held at the Belleville United Methodist Church on May 12th at 1:00pm. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family at the Elmwood Cemetery, Adams. Surviving are his son Bruce Barnard, Rainbow Lake, NY, Cynthia K. Langworthy (Mrs. Frederick III), Jill A.B. Halligan (Mrs. Michael) Winthrop, ME, seven grandchildren, Frederick Langworthy IV, Amber Langworthy Besaw, Hillary Barnard, Shaun, Brendan, Christopher Halligan, great grandchildren Caleb and Seth Besaw, Olivia Langworthy, Layla Halligan and step granddaughter Jaelyn MacKee, as well as four nieces and one nephew, also a sister Shirley Hoyle, Lebanon, OH. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Wesley Barnard, and granddaughter Dr. Adrienne Barnard Whitford;
Jim was born November 3, 1921, at home in Vernon Center, NY, the son of Rev. Harold and Esther Barnard, having lived in Ava, Richland, Mexico and Carthage. He graduated from Mexico Academy and Central school in 1941, and SUNY Oswego in 1948, completing a Master’s degree in 1954. In the summer of 1951 he was honored by being asked to join the Epsilon Pi Tau, the Industrial Arts Honor Society.
He enlisted in the Army Reserve, in September of 1942, and he was called to active duty in May of 1943, taking his basic training at Camp Hood, Texas. Completing his basic, he was assigned as cadre to an Infantry Training Company at Camp Hood and later was stationed at Camp Blanding, FL and Fort Smith, AK. In the late fall of 1944 he was shipped to Italy and then to France where he joined the 70th Division, 274 Battalion, H Company. In February of 1945 he was wounded, recovering in a hospital outside of Paris. Following the Armistice he was assigned to Ammunition Company, stationed on the outskirts of Paris where he served his allotted time and his shipment home and discharge from Ft. Dix in March of 1946. He is a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He and E. Virginia Barnard were married on July 9, 1949 by Rev. Dr. George McClung and Rev. Harold Barnard in Asbury United Methodist Church in Watertown, NY. He taught Industrial Arts and Driver Education from the fall of 1948 to June of 1979 at Belleville Central School and was advisor to the Yearbook for twenty five years and was also president of the Teachers Association on several occasions. As a member of the Union Academy of Belleville, Board of Trustees he served as their president from 1996 to 2001. He and his family lived in the village of Belleville until 1955 when they purchased a home in Thomas Settlement and in 1998 moved to their present home on the Green Settlement Road.
As a member of the Belleville United Methodist Church, for sixty-five plus years, he has served the United Methodist in various capacities. Locally, he has been a Sunday School Teacher, Lay Leader and Financial Secretary and on the District level he served several years on the Building and Grounds Committee and the Northern New York Conference on the Board of Pensions for some twenty five years, serving as its Chairman for several years.
He joined the Rising Light Masonic Lodge in 1949 of which he is a Past Master. He is also a Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Jefferson Masonic District and has held the office of Secretary of Rising Light Lodge from 1981 to 2001. In 2014 he received his 65 Years of Service certificate from the Grand Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York.
He had a number of hobbies and interests. He was a woodworker, photographer, collected stamps and coins, and unlike a lot of his generation, liked and used computers right up to the end.
He was able to stay in his home right up until the end through the loving care of his wife, and for over a year through the tender and devoted care of his caregiver Valerie Perry. He died as he always wished, quietly in his sleep, under the dedicated and supportive care of the Hospice House in Watertown.
