Shirley A Wagner, 92, a longtime resident of Clayton, died Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Kingsway Community, Schenectady, where she had resided since December 2011.
She was born in Watertown on July 19, 1925, daughter of Netta Campbell Cramer and Henry N. Cramer. Shirley grew up on a farm near South Rutland. She graduated from Adams Center Central School and the Watertown branch of the Rochester Business Institute. During the war she worked as a secretary for the Rochester Ordinance District at Bagley & Sewell. While her children were growing up, Shirley sought higher education in order to become a teacher. In 1966 she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education from Syracuse University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She was a member of the National Business Administration Honorary, Beta Gamma Sigma. She later received her Master’s Degree in Education, Guidance and Counseling from St. Lawrence University. She taught at Jefferson Vocational-Technical Center in Watertown until her retirement.
On September 6, 1945 she married Francis A. Wagner at Holy Family Church, Watertown. They were married for 66 years. She was predeceased by her loving husband Fran, who supported her in all her endeavors and her sisters Margery Smith and Jacqueline Cramer.
Shirley was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clayton where she was a Worship Committee Chairman and Choir Member.
Shirley’s interests were varied. While in Clayton she was a counselor in Health Insurance Information for the Office for the Aging; Secretary, Jefferson County Genealogical Society; Committeeman, Thousand Islands Performing Arts Fund and Young People’s Theatre of Clayton; and volunteer for Hospice of Jefferson County. She was also active in local Democratic politics.
She was a member of the Jefferson Lewis Council of NYSUT Retirees, College Women’s Club of Jefferson County, Adirondack Mountain Club, Black River Chapter, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Master Gardener Program, American Canoe Association, The River Choir and Little Theatre of Watertown.
Shirley dearly loved the river and all outdoor activities. Her passions included hiking, cross country skiing, biking (particularly taking the ferry to Canada with her sister Margery to bike there) and snow shoeing. She was an enthusiastic member of the Adirondack Mountain Club, Black River Chapter, always ready to go hiking, canoeing or cross country skiing with the group. Whenever possible she would be on the water, in her motor boat, canoe, or kayak. She and her friends would cross the river to swim off the boat at Potter’s beach.
Her entire life she loved to garden growing vegetables for the family as well as beautiful flowers.
Singing was an important part of her life. She sang in her church choir and for many years in the Northern Choral Society Christmas Concert. She travelled to England with the Choral Society to perform in cathedrals there. She also sang in the River Choir which serenaded various community groups. While living in Schenectady she was a member of the Joytones, a singing group sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association. With her daughter Jane she sang many times for seniors in assisted living and memory care centers.
Shirley is survived by her four children, John H. and wife Gail, Hamlin, Jane A. Wagner and husband Richard A. Lasky, Latham, David F. and wife, Beth, Orlando, Fla, and Steven R. and wife Deb, Clayton, NC; six grandchildren; one great grandson; brother-in-law A. Milain Smith, Watertown; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Norma and Denis Savage, Brockville, Ont..
The family extends their deep thanks and appreciation for the care that she received at Kingsway Community. Throughout her journey from assisted living to memory care and finally to the Kingsway Arms Nursing facility, Kingsway staff always treated Shirley with respect, kindness and compassion. Special thanks are directed to A Wing staff where Shirley resided for the past three and one-half years.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Shirley’s family at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton on Saturday, June 16, at 9:30. A funeral service will follow at noon at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Earl Lalone officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
