Robert “Frank” Bissell
pWaddington recently lost one of its well remembered native sons, Robert “Frank” Bissell age 76, who entered the presence of his Lord and Savior from his winter home in Hobe Sound, FL on February 1, 2016. He was born on March 25, 1939 on the family dairy farm on route 345 Waddington, NY. He was the son of the late Ralph and Harriet (Styles) Bissell, a farmer and an Administrative Assistant. For Frank, farming was not in his future, however, the experience he gained while on the farm shaped his character and honed his work ethic. He joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Sacramento, CA. He had many stories to recount of life on the farm and his time in the Air Force. After his discharge he attended Canton ATC. He graduated in 1963 with an A.A.S. Degree in Hotel Management. From 1964 to 1966, Frank was night manager of the Downtowner Motor Inn in Rochester, NY. While in Canton, Frank met and married Mary “Molly” Sandburg and had three children. From 1967 to 1968 Frank and Molly operated the Mariner House Restaurant in Ogdensburg, NY. He went on to SUNY Plattsburgh and in 1972 he graduated with a degree in Human Services. He then graduated from SUNY Albany with a Masters Degree in Social Work. The marriage ended in divorce in 1975. Frank worked for the State of New York at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center as a Master Social Worker for over 30 years when he retired in 2006. Before his retirement, he obtained his Real Estate License and joined Paul Boyer Realty and later opened his own agency, Bissell Real Estate. Frank really enjoyed helping people realize their dream of home ownership in the North Country, after all that’s where his heart truly was. He married Elizabeth “Bette” Ashley in October 1989, at the United Methodist Church, Waddington and began making a life together at Frank’s childhood home on the farm. He was a member of Clarke House Restoration, Waddington and Massena Chamber of Commerce as well as an active member in his community. Preceding him in death are his parents and a brother, Donald Bissell and a sister Genevieve Garlock. Surviving Frank are his wife of 26 years, Bette of Waddington, NY, and his three children Stephen Bissell (Lisa) of Allentown, PA, Amy Bissell of Copenhagen, NY, Sandra Fisher (Rick) of Morley, 6 grandchildren, two step-sons, Paul Coons (Sheila) of Parker, TX, John Coons (Tish) of West Lakeland, MN, step-daughter Debbie of San Diego, CA and three step-grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching the wild life on the farm, telling stories, and pointing out God’s many miracles. Frank is remembered by his nieces and nephew as the “Fun Uncle”. He was a loving father who was a legendary practical joker and a great listener who was quick to give good advice. He liked to attend local auctions and was an avid collector of antiques who also knew a great deal of local history. Frank’s many memories of his adventures of growing up on a farm in St. Lawrence County, during the Depression and World War II have been the source of endless stories that he shared with his children, nieces, nephew and grandchildren. Frank’s sense of humor and pranks are remembered by many that knew him. Calling hours for Frank, will be held Monday February 8, 2016 from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Waddington. A Funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday February 9, 2016 at the United Methodist Church Waddington with Rev. David Piatt presiding.
