Hartz officiating./ppHe worked at various farms in the area, J.C. Penney’s, Shorty’s Restaurant, Foxy’s Restaurant, and O’Briens Restaurant in Clayton. Lloyd also worked at the Grove Cemetery in LaFargeville./ppLloyd loved helping people do odd jobs around their houses and campers. pGouverneur - William C. Foster, 91, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital ./pp William was born on August 21, 1925 in Ogdensburg, the son of William H and May Clark Foster. /pp He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1943 and served in the United States Army from November 1943 to April 1945. He served as a 60mm mortar squad section leader in the 87th Infantry Division in the European Theater during WWII. Following his honorable discharge from the service, he graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1950./pp Bill began employment at the Gouverneur Savings and Loan in 1950 and became Executive Secretary in 1956. He also served as director of the Savings Association League of New York State. Bill was later employed as Registrar and then Director of Institutional Research at SUNY Canton until his retirement in 1993. He was inducted into the Canton College of Technolgy Hall of Fame in July of 2013. /pp Bill married Joyce E. Peets on May 16, 1953 in Massena New York with Fr. Joseph Doud officiating. /pp Joyce passed away September 17, 2002./pp Bill was a member of the Gouverneur VFW #6338, Commander of James Maloy Post #65 of the American Legion , president of the Gouverneur Chamber of Commerce, and a charter member of the Gouverneur Rotary Club. He also served as a Village of Gouverneur board trustee, member of the Gouverneur Planning Board, member of the St. James Parish council and trustee of the Gouverneur Public Library. In March 2015, Bill was honored as the Gouverneur VFW veteran of the year. He enjoyed gardening, spending time with his grandchildren and presiding over daily “social hour” at his home on Rowley street. /pp He is survived by his 7 sons Jay and Joanne of Ogdensburg, Clark and Barbara of Plattsburgh, John of Gouverneur, Stewart and Cheryl of Colchester VT, Fred and Rosa of Gouverneur, Timothy and Adrian McGraw of Atlanta GA, Matthew and Lisa of Gouverneur. 2 daughters Jill Foster of Gouverneur, Wendy and Patrick Serguson of Massena, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. pFort Covington - Lawrence Mayville, 84, passed away at his home with his family by his side on Monday, September 12, 2016. On December 6, 1952 Lawrence married the love of his life Joyce Lamb at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fort Covington. Lawrence worked for Elliot & Hutchins for a short period of time. He and his wife operated a small dairy farm until he went to work for General Motors where he retired in 1988 after 25 years. Lawrence had a real liking for working on small engines, lawn mowers, farm machinery, enjoying his dogs, cats, and watching baseball and hockey. His really passion was restoring his Farmall 100, Farmall C and his rare Farmall Earth Master out of California. Madeline R. Decker
pSTOCKHOLM – Mrs. Madeline R. Decker, affectionately known as “Mrs. D.” to many who loved her, joined her long-departed loved ones as she passed through the veil Wednesday September 14, 2016. A lifelong resident of Stockholm, Madeline had been residing at Riverledge Nursing Facility in Ogdensburg since July 2015. /ppMadeline Wanda Robertson was born in the town of Stockholm on a cold and snowy December 10, 1925, the daughter of Vern and Florence Craig Robertson. She graduated from Potsdam High School in 1942. /ppOn December 12, 1943, another cold and snowy day, she married the love of her life, Argie Decker at her parent’s home in Hopkinton. So began a life on the multi-generational Decker farm near West Stockholm. /ppBesides being an active participant in the farm work and caring for the numerous members of the extended family, Madeline was often employed off the farm. She worked in the cafeteria at Potsdam High School, as a nutrition aide for Cooperative Extension, and her favorite job, as cook and mom-away-from-home for twenty years for girls of Zeta Gamma Sigma sorority in Potsdam. /ppBeing 4-H leaders for 45 years, Madeline and Argie were fixtures at Gouverneur Fair for many years as they exhibited their registered Lone Pine Guernsey cattle, as Madeline judged you exhibits and provided food, comfort and care for youth exhibitors around the livestock barns. /ppShe loved young people and chaperoned and drove for every 4-trip she could. She was known for cruising along in her turquois two-toned Mercury, leading a songfest of old silly songs always ending with a rousing rendition of “He’s got the Whole World in His Hands.” Everyone wanted to ride with Mrs. D on what was soon dubbed “Mad-lines.” She and Argie were recipients of many awards related to their work with youth in various capacities./ppMadeline was a woman of many interests and talents. She always had several projects on going and several books being read. In line with her love of gardening, she was a member of the Potsdam Garden Club and was a founding member of the farmer’s market. And she loved to feed people. The family feasts she cooked for are legendary. The cookie jar was always full./ppMadeline is survived by her son, Clark (Nancy) Decker, her daughters, Meribeth (Mike) Richael and Anita (Bruce) Wright, and a nephew raised and loved as a son, Paul (Shirley) Charleston. There are ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, a niece, and since she adopted Argie’s family as her own, several of his family./ppMadeline was predeceased by her husband, Argie in 2006, her parents, her brother, Vernie, a niece and a nephew./ppA Memorial Service will be held Saturday at 12:00 NOON at the West Stockholm United Methodist Church with Lay Pastor Martha Helmer, officiating. A calling hour will begin at 11:00 AM at the church. The family kindly invites all to join them for lunch following the services. This is the part Madeline wanted everyone to enjoy. She loved a party and could find any excuse to have one. Mrs. Coughlin died January 28, 2008./ppAfter the Army, Noel worked as a field representative for Stebbins Engineering and Manufacturing Co., Watertown for ten years. He then was an insurance marketer for NY Casualty in Watertown and Clifton Park, retiring after 38 years in 1992. He had been a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, a member of Elks Lodge 496, Watertown, and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Crescent. He was a member of the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors Emeritus and the American Legion in Half Moon. In 1968 the couple moved to Syracuse, to Clifton Park in 1970, and returned to Watertown September 1995./ppNoel is survived by his three children and their spouses, Noel J. “Joe” and Margie Coughlin, Jr., Scranton, PA, Beth A. “Bitsy” and Dave Daut, Montpelier, VT, and Martin Scott Coughlin, Watertown; six grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The couple lived in Adams the majority of their married life. Nicholas J. Lyman
pNicholas J. Lyman died September 13, 2016 at home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Watertown, NY and spent his first 18 years there. His parents, Frederick G. Lyman and Phyllis (Frank) Lyman had eight sons. Nick was number two./pp Nick did his undergraduate work at Wadhams Hall Seminary (Ogdensberg, NY) and LeMoyne College, and his graduate work at SUNY Potsdam. After a brief time in Plattsburgh, he worked for 15 years at the Watertown Daily Times as a reporter, editor, and ultimately the Albany bureau correspondent. Then Nick worked for 15 years for Niagara Mohawk, now National Grid, in the public affairs department. When the power went off, you heard Nick’s voice on the radio explaining why. Finally, Nick worked for the New York State Education Department developing Regents exams. For 31 years Nick was a writer and performer in the Legislative Correspondents Association’s annual show and fundraiser. He treasured the many friendships he made there./pp Nick is survived by his wife of 41 years, Kathleen (McCullough) Lyman and their two daughters: Sarah Tichonuk (Erick) and Emily Sturman (David), and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers and many nieces and nephews./pp The family sends heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at New York Oncology and Hematology (especially Melissa), and St. Peter’s Hospital and Community Hospice. Special thanks go to Nick’s coworkers, who made heroic efforts to smooth difficult transitions in Nick’s final weeks. pRodman- Mari Ellen Ryan, from Rodman and formerly of Camillus, transcended and evolved to the Great Source on Friday, September 16th, 2016 from ovarian cancer./ppShe was born to Donald and Frances Fish, of Rodman, on July 15, 1956, the 4th child and eldest girl of the family. She graduated from South Jefferson High School in 1974 and later attended several colleges earning degrees in Human Services, Graphic Arts and Photography. Mari Ellen also earned multiple certifications in Apple Computer hardware and software as well as Microsoft software. She worked at many types of jobs throughout her life but was most proud of and happiest as a Teacher. She last taught Workforce Development Technology at the Watertown ATTAIN Lab (SUNY Research Foundation) since 2010 and greatly loved and valued her students./ppMari Ellen lived for people. She is survived by her best friend of 30 years, Diane K. Savage, her daughter Amy, Seattle, her brother Gary Fish, Rodman and many important and loved friends who made her life worth living. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her favorite Aunt, Ida Fish and her beloved rescue dogs, Alex and Rudy. pJane Sanford McCurdy passed away July 3rd, 2016, in San Jose, California at the age of 83./ppJane was born in Ogdensburg, New York on June 27th, 1933, the daughter of Attorney and Judge Donald E. Sanford and Isabella Dollar Sanford, a French and English Teacher. She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1951 and received a Bachelor of Arts in American Civilization from Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania in 1955. She then graduated from the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City and accepted a position as legal secretary in a Phoenix law firm. /ppShe married Dudley McCurdy, a mechanical engineer, in 1957. They lived in Boston, Swampscott, and Topsfield, Massachusetts and York Harbor, Maine before moving to San Jose, California when Dudley accepted a position with Philco-Ford in Palo Alto./ppJane and Dudley are the parents of five children: Mark, James, Meg Chase, Beth Underwood and Amy Leite, all of California. Jane was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 57 years, Dudley McCurdy, and her brother Donald E. Sanford, Jr. of Buffalo, New York. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Douglas M. Phyllis Reed
pPhyllis Reed was born on October 30, 1931 in Mannsville, NY. She passed on to her maker on September 5, 2016 at the Houston Hospice Center in Houston, Texas surrounded by family and friends./ppShe grew up on the family farm in Mannsville, NY and attended Belleville Central School. In the early 1950s, Phyllis played shortstop on the “Stones’ Dairy Maids” softball team. Her coach was quoted, “Phyllis is such an amazing athlete. She is a second Babe Didrikson!”/ppWhen school was completed, Phyllis worked on her parents’ farm, but in 1955 she decided to dedicate her life to helping others. She began work at the Rochester Friendly Nursing Home while attending school to become a licensed practical nurse. Once she received her LPN certificate, Phyllis worked caring for patients at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY./ppIn 1959, Phyllis moved to Houston, Texas and acquired a nursing position working on medical floors, in the intensive care unit, and in the operating rooms at The Houston Methodist Hospital. The main surgeon she worked with was, an ophthalmology surgeon, Dr. Alice McPherson who specialized in laser surgery./ppPhyllis Reed is remembered by her friends and co-workers as an advocate for her patients, her friends, her co-workers and the down trodden. She was the rare combination of compassion, strength, love, humor, and mechanical expertise./ppAfter 27 years of service, in 1986, Phyllis retired from nursing at The Houston Methodist Hospital, but continued assisting people with their medical problems by participating in home health care through 2016./ppPhyllis is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Stuart Marquart (Canton, NY); 3 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, and 2 great-grandsons. Phyllis has 4 surviving sisters, Arlean Reed Cobb (Henderson, NY), June Reed Lavezzo (Pulaski, NY), Jane Reed Hetko (Rochester, NY), Joyce Reed Claflin (Belleville, NY), sister-in-law, Marcia Jones Reed (Adams, NY) and many nieces and nephews./ppSix brothers Bernard, Willard, Donald, Richard, Maurice, and Frank and 3 sisters Shirley Reed Crandall, Betty Reed Towles, and Jean Reed Bigelow all died before her. /ppThere will be no calling hours. He was the son of Edward and Laura Burns Farley. He is survived by his wife, Jean Partisch Farley, two of his five brothers: John W. Farley and Senator Hugh T. Farley as well as his daughters: Janet Caldwell, Lynn Philbin, Jean Graham, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Robert was a graduate of St. Lawrence University. Helen E. Harrington
pPlattsburgh- Helen Elizabeth Harrington, 92, formerly of Adams Center, NY and Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY died on Thursday September 8, 2016 at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh, where she had been a resident since October 2014./ppHelen was born in Watertown, NY on the 27th of January 1924 and lived on the Morse family farm on Dry Hill Road. Following graduation from Watertown High School she enrolled in nursing school at the House of the Good Samaritan in Watertown. While in nursing school she enrolled as a World War II Nursing Corp Cadet. She left nursing school to marry Hollis Clifton Harrington on the 25th of December 1943 in Watertown, NY at the Stone Street Presbyterian Church. Hollis and Helen were the parents of two children Sharon and Sherwood. They resided on the Harrington family farm until their divorce in 1954. Helen, her parents and Sharon and Sherwood eventually settled on Church Street in Adams Center. She worked at various jobs in Watertown while the kids were in school. Once both Sharon and Sherwood had finished their education and moved away, Helen took classes at Jefferson Community College and obtained her Nursing LPN diploma. She continued to finally complete her training as a Registered Nurse at the age of 51, and graduated with honors. She worked at the House of the Good Samaritan in Watertown until moving to Plattsburgh. She retired in Plattsburgh as a Registered Nurse from CVPH Medical Center. Her grandmother, mother, daughter and daughter-in-law were also registered nurses./ppHer parents; Lena and Ray Morse, her two brothers Robert and Ray Morse passed away before her./ppSurviving are her daughter Sharon Kelly and her companion Bruce Fry of Plattsburgh, her granddaughter Elizabeth and her husband Tom Proietti and their children Olivia and Lena , two grandsons James and his wife Tammy Orr, their children Brady and Brooks and Robert Orr and his children Adelayde, Astrid and Nicholas. /ppAlso a son Sherwood and his wife Susan Harrington, Grass Lake, MI, a granddaughter, Dr. Jennifer Harrington and her husband Dr. James Strohschein, a grandson Kurt and his wife Melissa Harrington, their children Zachary and Bryce. Helen is also survived by three nieces and two nephews as well as Bruce Fry’s children, Christine Fry and her husband Mark and his granddaughter Ezri Fenton Fry, son Robert Fry, and his daughter Leah Fry. /ppA graveside service will be held on Saturday October 1, 2016 at 3:00 pm at Brookside Cemetery in Watertown, NY at the Morse family plot./ppContributions may be made to the Elmore SPCA, 556 Telegraph Road, Peru, NY 12972, or the charity of your choice. pDeferiet, NY- Margaret Anna Lovejoy, 94, of 33 Wilna Ave., died Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Carthage Area Hospital where she has resided for 2 years. /ppMargaret was born on June 14, 1922 in Deferiet, the daughter of the late George and Mary Anna (Miterko) Pastor. She was a graduate of Carthage High School and a graduate of secretarial school in New York City. Margaret worked for the St. Regis Paper Company in Deferiet as a secretary. She married Myles N. Lovejoy on June 5, 1948 at St. Rita’s Church in Deferiet. She loved to knit, crochet, embroider and spending time outdoors working on her home./ppShe was a member of St. Rita’s Church of Deferiet./ppShe is survived by her husband: Myles N. Lovejoy of Deferiet, four daughters and their husbands: Joanne and Daniel Birchenough of Fulton, Marianne and Stanley Ferguson of Carthage, Kathleen and Philip Aylward of Oswego, and Maribeth and Raymond LaFave of Alexandria, VA, 11 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren and a brother, Albert Pastor./ppShe is predeceased by her son, Lonnie Lovejoy who died on November 2, 2006 and a sister, Mary Hoffman./ppA funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 20 at St. Rita’s Church, Deferiet with Rev. Robert L. Decker officiating. Burial will be in Black River Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Robert V. Ritter
pWADDINGTON: Robert V. Ritter, 92, formerly of Waddington, NY passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Canton./ppBob was born in Schenectady, NY on June 20, 1924, son of Raymond and Edith (Vroman) Ritter. He was a 1942 graduate of Dwight Morrow High School, Englewood, NJ and Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY in 1946. Upon graduation Bob began work as an illustrator at Casanova Associates, New York. He later began his association with numerous publications, book publishers and advertising agencies./ppOn August 31, 1952 he married Mary Anne McBride at First Presbyterian Church, Waddington. Mrs. Ritter predeceased her husband on February 21, 2009./ppIn 1956 he moved his family from Queens to New City, NY where he resided for 33 years, was a founding member of the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corp., was active in his church and was active in numerous other community activities during his lifetime./ppBob, a lifelong artist was a self-employed illustrator and graphic designer for many years in New York City. His work appeared regularly in Newsweek Magazine, The New York Times, Prentice-Hall Publishing and others. He later taught his craft at Parsons School of Design in New York and upon relocating to the North Country established a weekly adult art class in Waddington./ppBob is survived by his loving companion and fellow artist Betty Jean Kentner as well as his four children and their spouses, Robert V. Jr. and Doreen, Allison Ritter Koch and Michael, Christopher and Maureen, Elizabeth Ritter Mott and Bryan, and nine grandchildren./ppA memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church, 13 Fenton Street in Waddington.
